Klinsmann Announces US MNT Roster for January Camp

U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has named a 25-player roster to report to the team’s January camp beginning Monday, Jan. 7, at the National Training Center in Carson, Calif. The squad includes St Louis natives (pictured) Brad Davis (Chaminade/SLU) and Will Bruin (DeSmet/Indiana).

The team will train together until Jan. 27, when it departs for Houston in advance of the first match of the 2013 campaign against Canada on Jan. 29 at BBVA Compass Stadium (TICKETS). Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. CT, and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and WatchESPN.

The roster includes only two non-MLS players but in the words of Eric Wynalda during the announcement on Fox Soccer, the focus is more obviously on the competition for what Klinsmann indicated would be 6-8 spots on the final Qualifying roster. Asked about Landon Donovan’s absence, Klinsmann noted that it is essentially Landon’s choice and he is not being considered for the February camp at this point either.

The Canada match is the only game prior to the start of the Final Round of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off for the United States on Feb. 6 against Honduras in San Pedro Sula. In addition to the Hexagonal, U.S. Soccer is celebrating its 100-year Anniversary and will be hosting a number of events throughout the year

Houston and New York Battle for First Friday

Tim-Cahill-celebratesFirst place in the Eastern Conference is on the line when the Dynamo and Red Bulls take the field Friday night at BBVA Compass Stadium. In the midst of a four-game winning streak, the Dynamo have jumped from fifth place to second place and sit only a point behind the conference-leading Red Bulls. The Dynamo have not defeated the Red Bulls since 2008. Friday night’s match is the first in a rare mid-season home-and-home series, as the Dynamo will head to Red Bull Arena next Friday to complete the three-game series.

What: Houston Dynamo vs. NY Red Bulls
When: 7 pm CT Friday
How: NBC Sports

It will be the first regular season MLS match for Tim Cahill, recently signed from Everton. Cahill’s signing makes N.Y. MLS Cup favorite according to some of the experts.

Dynamo midfielder Brad Davis was selected to the MLS Team of the week for his performance during Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Toronto FC that stretched Houston’s win streak to four games.

Davis’ follow-up to last season’s career year is on pace to be just as good as, if not better than, the original. Davis’ memorable 2011 campaign saw him lead MLS in assists with 16, finish runner-up in the MVP race to former teammate Dwayne De Rosario and earn an ESPY nomination for Best MLS Player. He had career highs in assists, games played and minutes as he led the Dynamo deep into the playoffs before suffering a quad injury in the Eastern Conference final. As noted at SoccerSTL.net, he’s also chasing the MLS Assist record held by Steve Ralston. He notched his 10th assist of the year to tie him for the league lead and give him his fourth straight season with double digit assists. Will Bruin (DeSmet/Indiana), who leads the team with 10 goals this season, is a regular beneficiary.

There are two additional national broadcast games on Sunday. Dallas vs Portland kicks off at 6 pm CT on NBC Sports and that is immediately followed by the LA Galaxy vs Seattle at 8 pm CT on ESPN2. Seattle travels to KC for the US Open Cup Final on Wednesday.what is body to body massage

MLS Soccer on TV this Weekend

brad-davis-houston-dynamoThe Houston Dynamo travel to Kansas City for a game tonight.

Who’s headed to the game to see Brad Davis, Will Bruin and Steve Ralston, all St Louis natives? Dynamo forward Will Bruin was selected to the MLS Team of the Week for Week 16 after scoring three goals in two games against Toronto FC and the Montreal Impact. Sporting KC had some fun in Montreal on Wednesday as well, winning 3-1 with all of the goals coming in the 2nd half, their first of the year.

Sporting KC game time is 7:00 pm tonight, catch the game on MLS Live

For the Couch Surfer’s, here’s the national broadcast games this weekend:

Sunday July 8 at 2:00 pm – Chicago Fire vs LA Galaxy (ESPN)
Sunday July 8 at 6:00 pm – New England vs New York RB (Galavision)

On a related note, did you catch this report by MLS on Brad Davis’ pursuit of the MLS Career Assist record? It’s almost a St Louis conversation as the analysts discuss the Ralston-Twellman connection and the developing Davis-Bruin connection and it’s potential impact on one pair of St Louis players surpassing the previous generation. Steve Ralston holds the MLS Career Assist mark, with 135.

Missouri Nets Two Parade All-Americans

SLUH Billikens Defeat DeSmet Spartans Missed this announcement back in late May but it’s worth posting now. From the St Louis Post-Dispatch:

In 1980, St. Mary’s High senior Keith Meyer was honored by Parade magazine as its high school boys player of the year. This year’s All-America team, which will be featured in the Parade Magazine in the Sunday Post-Dispatch, will include two area standouts — SLUH’s Tommy Meyer and DeSmet’s Will Bruin. Tommy, (who is) Keith’s son, was also named to the Parade team last year.

Meyer, who stands 6 feet 2 and weighs 170 pounds, will begin his collegiate career in the fall at Indiana University, his father’s alma mater. Keith Meyer, also a defender, helped the Hoosiers capture their first two national championships in 1982 and 1983.

Will Bruin (pictured in a game against DeSmet October 13th 2007), a 6-foot-2, 195-pound striker, was a two-time All-Metro selection who had 29 goals and 16 assists last fall as a senior, completing his Spartans career with 103 goals and 39 assists. He will also attend and play at IU.

They’ll be joined by Graham Basecke, Glendale Falcons/Springfield SC, in the Fall of 2009.

And who can name Springfield’s only Parade All-American soccer player?
