Drury Panthers Host Missouri State Bears Saturday

Our two local women’s teams will face off in an exhibition match at Harrison Stadium tomorrow (Saturday) at 8:00 pm.

I haven’t been in town so I’ve been unable to stop by a practice to check out the new girls. We do know that the Bears defeated the Central Arkansas Bears 3-0 last night in their first exhibition match of the season.

MSU took the lead in the 14th minute when Jenna Laughlin knocked in the first of her two goals on the night, with Allison Osmundson getting the assist. Laughlin struck again in the 65th minute, and Caroline Sweeney tacked on another for the maroon Bears in the 69th minute.

The quote is from the story on the UCA Bears website, a brand new D1 program. The MSU Bears website offers a score. Oh, and daily practice reports for the football team. Come on Rick, we’re hoping for something new from the new administration, not the same old same old. UPDATE – what do you know. Well done.

This Week in Southwest Missouri Soccer

Ryan Moses, Kickapoo Chiefs 2008 By the time the majority of you read this, most of the College and High School boys squads in the region will already be recovering from their first practice session of the new season.

I stopped by Kickapoo Sunday evening, check-in and paperwork details in advance of Monday’s opening practice. The Booster Club has done a good job of updating the Chiefs results board, adding the Boys 3rd place finish at State last November. That’s senior Ryan Moses in the photo, a member of the Springfield SC U17 State Champion squad and a brand new St Lois University Billiken recruit. Ryan verbally committed last week and I interviewed him following this photo for a recruiting story that I’ll post on Wednesday.

The Missouri State Lady Bears were out kicking it around Sunday evening as well, I caught about 15 minutes of their personal session, in advance of today’s formal practice effort. They’ll travel to Conway AR on Thursday for an early exhibition game against the UCA Bears. They’ll also make the trek to the North side on Saturday when they’ll visit the Drury Panthers, GLVC Conference champions and Sweet 16 qualifiers last year. The game is at Harrison Stadium and will kick off at 8:00 pm. This will be the first game between the two squads since 2004 I believe, I can’t find a thing in my archives or the school websites but I recall late regular season games at Cooper. Bailes vs McLain, but in maroon and red now. Should be fun.

The Olympics have been a joy, eh (the Curti’s recognize my accent). But with Euro 2008 and now Beijing, this season has snuck up pretty quickly on me. I’ll be traveling this week for personal time but look for an interview with the Springfield Demize, some college updates and a MSHSAA update as well. District assignments won’t be finalized until Friday so we’ll explore some of the possible scenarios. Feel free to email me if you have some thoughts you’d like included in the article. See you this weekend!
