NCAA D3 Soccer – Ziegler, Aiken Playing This Weekend!

(Buffalo, NY) – The Medaille College men’s soccer team will face the University of Rochester in the opening round of the NCAA Division III National Championships on Saturday (11/13) at 7:30pm (EST) and you can follow all of the action live. For streaming video click here, If the Maverick’s advance they will face the winner of Swarthmore College v. DeSales University on Sunday (11/14) at 6:00pm.

Junior Ziegler Stuart (#21, Missouri Southern/West Plains 2009) has played in 20 games this season for the Maverick’s, starting in 15. He has scored a goal and added 3 assists this season for a total of 5 pts. It’s the 3rd straight year Medaille has made the NCAA tournament, the 2nd for Ziegler who transfered to Medaille when the MSSU program folded. Ziegler garnered Second Team honors in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference as a sophomore.

The 12th-ranked Emory University Eagle’s received a 1st round bye in theNCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament. Their opponent in for the second round is Lynchburg College, who defeated Transylvania University 3-1 Thursday night to advance to Sunday’s 6:00 PM match at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

Freshman Chris Aiken (Greenwood 2010) has played in 12 games this season, getting an assist.

Emory will enter the game with an overall record of 14-2-2, including a perfect 10-0-0 record in home games this season. The Eagles were ranked 12th in the NSCAA’s final regular season poll, and ninth in the last D3Soccer.com poll. Emory’s top offensive weapon this season has been junior Andrew Natalino, who has scored a team-high 11 goals and 26 points. Defensively, goalkeeper Trenton Spindler ranks second among all Division III players with a 0.938 save percentage and seventh with a 0.303 goals against average, while the Emory backline has matched a program record with 13 shutouts this season. The Eagles are led by head coach Sonny Travis, who has compiled a 58-11-5 record during his four seasons with Emory.

Missouri Southern Lions Get Their First Win

Crowder College Roughriders 1st Game at MSSU LionsFrom the MSSU website – Nate Evans (Cassville 2007) produced the only goal of the match to lead the Missouri Southern Lions to their first victory of the 2008 campaign, 1-0 over the Northeastern State RiverHawks in a Southwest Soccer Conference matchup Wednesday night (Oct. 15) at Hal Bodon Field.

Evans’ (pictured in yellow against Crowder College earlier this year) score came in the 48th minute on a header from inside the box off a cross from Austin Whiles.

Mike Bayless had a match-high seven shots for the Lions (1-11-1, 1-3-1 SSC) as Southern out-shot NSU (2-11, 1-4 SSC) 14-13 overall and 7-6 on-goal.

Jon Hansen made six saves for the Lions, including an outstanding, diving stop on a clear shot by NSU’s Zach Schmoker in the 51st minute. NSU goalkeeper Chris Jones also recorded six stops. Stuart Ziegler (West Plains 2008) and Jesse Clevenger (College Heights 2006) both started Wednesday’s game.

The Lions will now take nine days off before looking to make it two straight wins when they will host West Texas A&M on Friday night (Oct. 24) at 7 p.m.

Senior Allison Osmundson netted the game-winning goal at the 61:38 minute mark in the second-half to give Missouri State their second win on the weekend. The Bears improved their record to 5-3-1 on the season. Tara Bailes (Catholic 2008) came on as a substitute.

The Panthers wasted little time getting on the board, with Nicole Williams getting a goal off a Mandi Little assist at the 4:41 mark. The Panthers pulled out of a halftime tie with two second-half goals to beat Bellarmine 3-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. The Panthers are now 4-2-1 overall and a league-leading 4-0 in GLVC play.

Receiving another two goals from junior Steve Wilczewski, the Drury men’s soccer Panthers blanked Bellarmine4-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Sunday. Wilczewski (Glendale 2006) scored his league-leading seventh and eighth goals to help the Panthers move to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the GLVC. Adam Peterson (Kickapoo 2007) also added a goal and an assist. Kyler Temple (Kickapoo 2008), Alex Palmer (Kickapoo 2007) and Danny Collins (Glendale 2007) also played.

In a tough-fought match, SBU’s lone goal came in the 32nd minute of the first half. Nicola Cousins was the scorer, putting her at 6 goals for the season. She was supplied by sophomore, Jaymye Ross. Ross now has 4 assists for the season. Johanna Olsson kept her third clean sheet of the year, making 7 saves. SBU now sits at 4-0 on the season and 3-0 in the MIAA.

Steven Beattie broke a one-all tie with a goal 14 minutes into the second half and the Norse, ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA Division II poll, added a second goal later in the period to come away with their 29th straight regular season win since the Miners won at NKU in 2006. Hays (Kickapoo 2008) and Moore (Rolla 2005) started.

Tied at 1-1 going into the break the Lady Miners gave up five goals in the second half to fall at Northern Kentucky 6-1 on Sunday afternoon in Wilder, Ky. Rachel Moore (Rolla 2006) started.

With the match knotted at 1-1, the No. 5-ranked Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Missouri Southern Lions 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Omaha, Neb. Freshman Randi Russell (Joplin 2008) made a career-high nine saves for the Lions while earning her second straight start. McKenzie (Webb City 2008) started, with Altman (Joplin 2008) and Ragains (Lebanon 2008) coming on as substitutes.

The Lions (0-7-1, 0-2-1 SSC) stayed close throughout the match despite being out-shot 17-5 overall, including a 14-3 bulge in the second half. The #14 Buffs held an 8-2 edge in shots-on-goal. Freshman Stuart Ziegler (West Plains 2008) had a team-high two shots for the Lions. Clevenger (College Heights 2006) started and Nate Evans (Cassville 2007) came on as a sub.

The Bears opened strong Friday evening, coming off of their Tournament win at New Mexico last week. Attacking with verve, they wasted no time exploiting the first opportunity to present itself. Kyle Windmueller, the man the MSU Standard calls the “go-to guy” did just that, beating his defender on the left side. His run into the box created space that midfielder Ryan Hennessey filled, receiving the square ball near the spot before slotting his shot just inside the far post in the 11th minute. The Bears kept up the attack, earning a 6-3 advantage in shots in the half.

The second half provided a mirror image of the first, with the Crusaders creating more opportunities, and beating the Bears with a goal in the 87th minute. It was scored by senior Paul Leitelt from 20 yards out as he found space of his own to hammer a shot to the far side netting. It might have been worse but the Bears were fortunate that Brandon Durk was prepared in the 75th minute, as he intercepted a crossing pass at the far post that he knocked down and goal keeper Alex Riggs quickly collected.

Two overtime periods with one near miss for the Bears as a set piece skipped just beyond Thomas Vania’s reach in the six yard box. Tonight marked the return of Springfield Demize player Isreal Bisoni (pictured, underneath MSU’s Justin Alford) who joined the Crusaders from Coffeyville CC, along with his teammate Rodolfo Lucas. Bisoni came on midway through the 1st half and played the majority of the game this evening at forward.

The Missouri State women’s soccer team dominated Nicholls State in a 7-0 shutout victory on Friday night in the first match of the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, AR. Tara Bailes (Catholic 2008) came on as a substitute while scoring 1 goal and providing an assist as well.

Drury broke open a tight contest with three second-half goals and cruised to a 4-0 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match Friday. Katy McLain (Kickapoo 2008) came on as a substitute in the game for the Lady Panthers.

The Drury University soccer Panthers kept their unbeaten start intact, defeating Kentucky Wesleyan 5-1 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match Friday afternoon. The Panthers, now 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the GLVC, received two goals from senior forward Marco Cherisma – pushing his season total to five – and single goals from juniors Steve Wilczewski (Glendale 2006) and Andrew Bordelon and sophomore Micah Whorton. Kyler Temple (Kickapoo 2008), Adam Peterson (Kickapoo 2007), Alex Palmer (Kickapoo 2007) and Danny Collins (Glendale 2007) all came on as substitutes in the game. Wilczewski, Drury’s leading scorer, was also interviewed by the Drury Mirror recently. Key take away?

Q: What is the better rivalry; Yankee’s/ Redsox’s or Glendale/Kickapoo?
A: I would have to say Glendale/Kickapoo, even though it’s a Glendale dominated rivalry.

The game finished in a 0-0, scoreless tie that was halted in the 80th minute due to darkness. Nate Evans (Cassville 2007) joined Stuart Ziegler (West Plains 2008) and Jesse Clevenger (College Heights 2006) in the starting lineup.

Amanda Deml scored the only goal of the match on a free kick from 20 yards out to lead the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats to a 1-0 win over the Missouri Southern Lions in MIAA action Thursday afternoon. Joplin Eagle 2008 graduates Randi Russell and Lindsay Altman both got their first starts of the season, with Brianna McKenzie (Webb City 2008) and Brianna Ragains (Lebanon 2008) coming on as substitutes. Rusell went the entire 90 minutes, with 2 saves.

Theresa Sanches scored the tie-breaking goal on a penalty kick in the 57th minute to propel the Texas Woman’s Pioneers to the win. The score came just seven minutes after the Lions (2-1) evened the match on a Sarah Evers goal from 10 yards out. Brianna McKenzie (Webb City) earned her 1st start of the season while Lindsay Altman (Joplin) and Brianna Ragains (Lebanon) also saw playing time.

Missouri Southern host MIAA foe, the Central Missouri Mules, on Thursday at 7:00 pm at home. Head coach Trevor Wachsman is two wins shy of reaching 50 for his career (48-35-18 in his sixth season). It would be a nice weekend if they could get wins against the Mules and SBU who visit Saturday.

The Missouri Southern Lion’s men’s squad lost a pair of games this weekend. On Friday, Colorado State – Pueblo beat them 3-1, taking a 2-0 lead before the Lion’s Greg Edmonds scored from an assist by Stuart Ziegler (West Plains). Today’s game against Colorado-Colorado Springs saw the Mountain Lions score just four minutes into the match, adding another tally in the 71st minute for the victory.

The Prairie Stars were outshot by the Miners 26-9 in the game and had only five shots on goal to the Miners’ 11. However, UIS turned two counterattack plays into goals in the first half and rode the play of NAIA All-American goalkeeper Chance Walker to keep S&T at bay as it tried to rally in the second half. The Miner’s goal was scored by Brandon Moore (Rolla) in the 58th minute, he was joined by Zack Hay (Kickapoo) in the starting lineup.

Emporia State Hornets – 1
The Lady Miners soccer squad picked up a 2-1 overtime win at Emporia State on Sunday afternoon on Melissa Young’s goal 2:48 into overtime. Young headed a shot inside the right post off a feed from Paige Smothers. The Miner’s win finished ESU’s first ever 2-0 start to season.

On Friday, the Miners lost to Christian Brothers 0-1, the lone goal coming in the 55th minute from a crowd in front of the box. Zack Hay (Kickapoo) once again got the start in the game for S&T.

This Friday, Southern Indiana visits to open the GLVC calendar for the Miners. The women will play at 5:00 and the men at 7:30 pm. Sunday will feature Kentucky Wesleyan with games at 12:00 pm and 2:30 pm. Both

Drury University’s men’s soccer Panthers spotted Harding an early goal, then rolled to a 5-1 victory over the Bison here on Sunday afternoon. Steve Wilczewski (Glendale) scored two goals, Adam Peterson (Kickapoo) added one along with an assist and Danny Collins (Glendale) assisted on a goal as well. Kyler Temple (Kickapoo) and Alex Palmer (Kickapoo) also saw playing time in a game that also welcomed back Tyson Bramley from injury and Ben Taylor who picked up two assists.

Harding Bison – 3
The Lady Panthers fall, after giving up 3 goals in just over 4 minutes. The game winner for the Bison came in the 88th minute, pushing the Panthers to 0-2-1 this season. It is the first win for the Bison, who lost 5-4 in OT to the MSSU Lions, last week. Goals were scored by Mandi Little and Nicole Williams, both in the 2nd half.

The Panthers hit the road Friday for their first GLVC game at UMSL where they’ll take on the Tritons. They’ll return home on Sunday to host Southern Indiana

The Southwest Baptist Bearcats had the weekend off, after seeing their game at Rolla cancelled at halftime. They at Emporia State (KS) Thursday evening and at Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon at noon as they open MIAA play.

The Bills out-shot the Bears 11-6 in the first half, 8-3 in the second stanza and 8-1 in the two overtime periods for an overall 27-10 advantage. Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Perry was forced to make just one save in posting her third consecutive shutout. Missouri State’s Jackie Jasper made nine saves.

John Brown Gets Past Missouri Southern

Golden Eagles sophomore forward Adrian Jasso tallied the first goal for JBU in the 11th minute off the assist from Jamal Bandeh. Ten minutes later, sophomore Juan Iraola continued the trend after scoring unassisted for the 2-0 lead.

The Lions (0-3) fought back to within a goal when Mike Bayless found the net from in front of the box off a pass from Greg Edmonds in the 60th minute.

The match was emotionally charged, with a combined four yellow-cards and one red-card issued.

Chris Byington (Camdenton 2008) came on as a sub for the Golden Eagles and got one of their nine shots on goal. Ziegler (West Plains 2008) and Clevenger (College Heights 2006) started for MSSU with Nate Evans (Cassville 2007) coming on as a substitute.

This is a very good result for the Bears, getting the win on a 50th minute goal from their midfield general, sophomore Samantha Aguilar. Sophomore midfielder Christine Cross earned the assist as she led Aguilar with a pass that resulted in a goal in the bottom left corner of the net. Tara Bailes (Catholic 2008) once again played significant minutes in midfield.

The Redhawks posted a 12-3-4 record last season while capturing their second consecutive Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. It looks like they were missing a key player, Casey Kraft (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) who does not show up in the box score but is expected to lead their offense this season. UPDATE – Southeast suffered a bad break before the game when senior standout Casey Kraft rolled an ankle in warmups. She did not play, but Nelson doesn’t believe the injury is serious.

The Bears will host Tulsa at home on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm

The Lions gave up a goal in the 47th minute to create a 1-0 deficit, only to see their senior leader Nikki Llewellyn tie the game in the 88th minute and get the game winner in the 105th minute to earn the win in their home opener. Megan Dimza assisted on the first goal, Shannon Kuhn on the second. UPDATE – They were the 39th and 40th goals of Llewellyn’s career.

Sophomore Lindsay Altman (Joplin 2007) and freshman Brianna McKenzie (Webb City) both earned minutes in the match, with McKenzie getting 1 shot off from her midfield position.

The Lions took the initial lead in the game, getting a goal from freshman Kevin Aubuchon, assisted by sophomore Nate Evans (Cassville 2007) in the 76th minute. The home team tied it on a 30 yard free kick from right wing in the 85th and got the game-winner 5 minutes into OT from a cross into the box. Stuart Ziegler (West Plains 2008) and Jesse Clevenger (College Heights 2006) both started for the Lions.

Brooke Ryan and freshman Melissa Young scored second half goals for the Lady Miners, who won a season opening contest for the first time since beating Winona State to start the 2003 campaign.

S&T tied the score again at the 62:08 mark when Mario Calderon redirected a ball from Brandon Moore (Rolla 2005) past goalkeeper Ryan Cruise to knot the score at three. But moments later, the Miners were whistled for a foul in the penalty area and Tom Mangotic made the penalty kick for what turned out to be the Eagles decisive goal.

Crowder College Roughriders Open With Exhibition at MSSU Lions

Crowder College Roughriders 1st Game at MSSU Lions The Missouri Southern Lions played host to their new neighbor, the Crowder College Roughriders, on Friday night with an exhibition soccer game played on the artificial surface at the football stadium. The score, 2-0 for the Lions, reflected the difference between the programs with the Junior College team visiting a Division 2 school. It was a competitive game, with goals scored in both periods by the Lions as they were able to limit the number of real opportunities the Roughriders could generate.

I caught the second goal, scored by new signee Kevin Aubuchon, which created strong buzz from his teammates on the sideline. The Lions signed 11 players for the upcoming season, including Stuart Ziegler from West Plains who will provide two-way support from his wide midfield position. Junior Ben Pantzlaff and senior Austin Whiles look to lead the charge from midfield while freshman Lawrence Lartey should see time at forward with Nate Evans (Cassville) and Jesse Clevenger (College Heights) while sophomore Eddie Mulholland (Jeff City) was orchestrating things from the backline.

The Roughriders have a slate of 18 games scheduled, playing against all of the Junior College programs in the state. Their region includes Meramec, Flo Valley (my alma mater and former national champions), East Central, Blue River, Jefferson (2006 Champions) and Maple Woods. With a roster that includes 11 players from Southwest Missouri, 7 from Northwest Arkansas and internationals from Scotland, England and Brazil, I am looking forward to Coach Brad Smith’s ability to blend the talent and cultures that are represented. After seeing Meramec last year in the Regional playoffs, I think they have a chance to surprise some folks this year. News-Leaders Names All-Ozark Soccer Squad

Now that it feels like winter again, it’s time for the All-Ozark squad from the News-Leader. (to be continued once I get time to update it from Wednesday’s paper) Updated, with corrections noted

Kyler Temple (Kickapoo, Sr. forward)
The Chiefs’ explosive forward played some of his best soccer as Kickapoo made a trip to Columbia Fenton. Temple — headed to Drury — ended the season with 14 goals and four assists.

Stuart Ziegler (West Plains, Sr. forward)
Ziegler led the Zizzers up front with a team-high 25 goals. His speed was disruptive to opposing defenses as he created other goal-scoring opportunities with 17 assists.

Devon Newport (Glendale, Jr. forward)
Exciting to watch, Newport dazzled Falcon fans with footwork and finishing skills. The junior Falcon finished with 20 goals and 14 assists.

Justin Scicluna (West Plains, Sr. midfielder)
Scicluna scored some amazing goals from the midfield position, while creating chances for others. He finished his senior season with 20 goals and 17 assists.

Ryan Toombs (Bolivar, Sr. midfielder)
Toombs was a second team all-state selection, using his length to reach for balls and control the middle of the field. He finished with 26 goals and 14 assists.

Heath Melugin (Kickapoo, Sr. midfielder)
The Chiefs had final four vision from the opening kick, and Melugin — heading to Missouri State — was the centerpiece. The first-team all-state selection scored an astonishing 55 goals, and also led the team with 25 assists.

Kam Maddy (Rolla, Sr. midfielder)
Maddy was an ever-present force in the middle for the Bulldogs, and was second on the team with 14 assists.

Tanner Roberts (Bolivar, Sr. defender)
He was the Southwest Region defensive player of the year for the second year in a row, as well as grabbing his second all-state nod as a senior.

Ryan Squires (Glendale, Jr. defender)
The Falcons’ senior junior sweeper anchored Glendale’s defense with hard tackles, and always going strong to balls in the air.

Zack Hay (Kickapoo, Sr. defender)
A second-team all-state selection, Hay was the Chiefs’ defensive sweeper. Heading to University of Missouri-Rolla Missouri Science & Technology (formerly UMR), he also scored eight goals and dished five assists from the back.

Patrick McCarthy (Glendale, Sr. goalkeeper)
Glendale’s senior keeper had 13 shutouts, and showed consistency throughout his senior campaign, with a keen knowledge of reading the game.
