Stuart Beezley converts a PK 2 min into the 2nd half after being pulled down in the box. Soon afterwards, Cory McCoy scored after a nice pass from Devon Whitlock sent him in on the keeper on the left side. Finally, Hawken Thieme completed the scoring around the 58th min on an assist from Andy Godwin. The Jays came out attacking tonight and while it took some time, their effort was rewarded with the win.

The District Final is Thursday, 7:00 pm and features tonight’s winners – #1 Catholic vs #3 Greenwood.

Class 1 District 9 continues at Richland

#2 Dixon Bulldogs – 2
#3 Laquey Hornets – 4

The District Final is Thursday, 4:30 pm and features #1 Crocker vs #2 Laquey.

The winner’s of these two Districts will face off in the Sectional game on Tuesday November 9th, I believe the new model is for the even District winner to host in 2010 while next year it will be the odd year.

Congratulations To Hogan’s Havoc, Class of 2011

With the Greenwood Blue Jay’s senior recognition this evening comes a look back to when the boys were 3rd graders I guess (May 2001). Just a year before I moved here and I began covering the regional game four years later. Now they are counting the days before they leave the house and head off to college.

As someone noted on Facebook this week, the days are long and the years shorter. Enjoy it while you can!

Oct 4th – College Heights Stuns Greenwood

Brantly Gossett, College Heights Cougars (2013)

Brantly Gossett, College Heights Cougars (2013)

Greenwood Blue Jays – 1
College Heights – 2
at Greenwood, junior Evan Belk’s strong play in goal and the Jay’s inability to score from the penalty spot gave the Cougars the first win in six years. The Cougar’s, who shared control of small school soccer in Southwest Missouri with Greenwood prior to the arrival of Catholic’s squad, took an early lead when a defensive mistake allowed Dagen Worthington Brantly Gossett to break in on goal unmarked. That goal in the 10th minute held up until the 57th minute when Stuart Beezley added to his school career record as he ran across the face of the goal area before putting his left-footed shot to the near upright (video).

The goal came after a PK opportunity for Greenwood that was stopped by Belk, as the Blue Jays came out in the second half re-energized and determine to earn the win on their home field. College Heights played strong team defense in front of their keeper while also generating several break aways. The Cougar’s got the game-winner in the 59th minute when Dalton Zarrabi buried a penalty kick for College Heights into the upper 90.

From that point on it was a countdown for the Cougars who held on for the win. There are several videos from the 2nd half available on my Youtube channel along with an interview with goalkeeper Evan Belk. If I was impressed going into that interview, I came away more so. Check it out.

Sep 30th – Nixa Shuts Out Ozark, Mike Howard Win’s 300th

Nixa Eagles – 1
Ozark Tigers – 0
A goal in the 18th minute by jr Jameson McFadden, assisted by JR Corey Cann, provided the difference on the scoreboard tonight in this Christian County derby. The goal was the culmination of a sustained attack by the Eagles as the kept the visitors under constant pressure from the outset.

Sr Ryan Bilyeu kept the game close for the Tigers as he blunted half-a-dozen shots while his defense worked hard to keep Nixa from an easy goal. While Ozark worked hard to generate an attack of their own, it wasn’t until the 32nd min that they got into the Eagles box, earning a corner kick.

Photo Gallery (or see a sample at bottom of the page)

The 2nd half was more even but the midfield duo of Cann and Drake Trease, club teammates with Springfield SC, bring a fluidity and control that make Nixa a team to watch. If they can generate a more consistent offensive output, they could be a handful in late October. Check out my interview with them below. There is also a highlight video down below with the photo gallery of an early opportunity that is a good sample of the Eagle’s attack in the 1st half.

Preview: at Nixa Jr HS, this COC and District 11 game is being promoted as the Backyard Brawl
