Head Coach Ben Timson On Catholic’s State Title

Head Coach Ben Timson and I took some time after the celebrations on Saturday to discuss his title-winning squad and its traditions. It’s a history that stretches back to 1998, very early in Southwest Missouri annals although not the first. I believe that belongs to the Rolla Bulldogs who first kicked off in 1996.

The photo features the Fitzgerald and Renner families who have contributed 7 players over an 11 year period to the program, culminating in Erin Fitzgerald and Veronica “Ronnie” Renner bringing home the title. It’s just one example that continues when you discuss names like Bailes, Dahlberg, Skahan and many more.

Apologies if I got any of it wrong, leave corrections in the comments and I’ll update it :)

Shannon Fitzgerald & Northwest Bearcats Get Record 10th Win

The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats tied their record for wins in a season with their 1-0 win over Emporia State on Thursday at Emporia, KS. Northwest Missouri State midfielder Heidi Sobota sent a slick ball through the hands of Emporia State goalkeeper Nikki Schmitz and into the back of the net for the game-winning goal in a 2-1 double-overtime win Thursday at ESU Pitch.

Shannon Fitzgerald, a Catholic 2005 graduate who played on 2 State tournament teams for the Irish, reached her 70th game played for the Bearcats in the historic win. Returning from a Redshirt season in 2008 due to injury, Shannon ranks 5th in career assists at the program and is one of 13 players who have more than 700 minutes played this season.

Shannon started 17 games and appeared in all 18 as a junior, holds the role of primary kicker for corners. Her sophomore year she started the final 17 games of the season, appeared in all 19 and was an honorable mention All-MIAA selection. Freshman year she played in 17 of 18 games, ranked sixth on the team in points while recording 11 shots with one game-winning goal.

While at Catholic, the team made a trip to the state Final Four in her sophomore and junior years, losing in the quarterfinals in her senior year, and was a two-time all-state honoree and a three-time all-district and all-region selection.

You’ll have one more chance to see her before her college career ends when the Bearcats visit Southwest Baptist on November 7th, a 12pm start time that day. There is a game at Central Missouri State in Warrensburg for the more adventurous on Thursday November 5th at 7 pm.

By the way, the Bearcat site has a nice retrospective on the season on their site, Bearcats Rule the Pitch in 2009, for anyone wanting more information on the development of the team and the program in the five years Shannon has been at NWMSU.

MIAA Soccer: Nebraska Omaha Chasing The Title

Nebraska Omaha Mavericks

Nebraska Omaha Mavericks

Truman State – 5
Southwest Baptist Bearcats – 0
The Truman women’s soccer team lit up the scoreboard on Senior Day, as a pair of forwards – senior Isabel Gaeta and freshman Olivia Hayes – scored twice each en route to a 5-0 Bulldog romp of Southwest Baptist on Saturday afternoon. Blaire Baker, Camdenton 2008, and Ashley Wilson, Neosho 2007, each played today as they have in the majority of the games this season.

Northwest Missouri State Bearcats – 1
Emporia State Hornets – 0
Northwest Missouri State forward Andrea Tritz’ fifth goal of the season and 13th of her career was the difference in a 1-0 Bearcat win against Emporia State on a cold and blustery day at Bearcat Pitch Saturday. It’s the ninth win for Northwest this season, which is one shy of the program record. Shannon FitzGerald, Catholic 2006, started her 11th game of the season, playing 74 minutes in the win. She has a goal and 2 assists this season, putting her in the Top 5 in scoring this year.

Central Missouri State Mules – 1
Missouri Western Griffons – 0
The Missouri Western soccer team played a tough Central Missouri squad to a 1-0 loss on their home turf. The Griffons entered the game looking to avenge a 1-0 loss to Central Missouri suffered just 7 days earlier. Central Missouri scored with 16:18 left in the first half on a dead ball foul just outside the box.

The Standings as of Saturday, October 8th have Truman State and Nebraska-Omaha in the lead, with the teams having split their season series already. The Maverick’s got a 4-1 win at home September 12th, followed by a 0-1 loss at Truman State on September 26th. Baring any upsets, the rematch should be in the MIAA Conference championship game.

Neb.-Omaha 7-1 8-4
Central Mo. 5-2-1 6-4-2

Missouri Southern hosts a pair of games this coming week, with Southwest Baptist visiting Thursday for a 7:00 pm game, followed by the Central Missouri State Mules on Saturday, again at 7:00 PM
