Tommy Howe: Coaching good soccer takes patience

Tom Howe, Scott Gallagher SC (2006)Former Missouri State Head Coach Tommy Howe was interviewed by Soccer America for their Youth Insider series. Check it out!

Tom Howe helped found St. Louis’ Scott Gallagher SC in 1976 and coached future stars such as Tim Ream, Brad Davis and Pat Noonan. One of his alums, Cal coach Kevin Grimes, calls Howe “a legend, one of the best youth coaches ever.” Last year, after Scott Gallagher merged with Busch SC and Metro United, Howe left and started a new club, Woodson City Rangers. Howe, a St. Louis product himself who starred at SIU-Edwardsville and played in the old NASL, spoke to us for the Youth Soccer Insider’s ongoing interview series with leaders of U.S. youth clubs.

SOCCER AMERICA: If you had a magic wand, how would you use it to improve youth soccer in America?

TOM HOWE: I wish everybody would try and play like Barcelona. If all the clubs across the country did that you’d have some pretty smart players when they hit the ages of 18, 19, 20. And there’d be more people wanting to watch soccer in this country. Barcelona’s the best team I’ve ever seen. They’re just fun to watch.

Another thing about Barcelona — they don’t have a lot of these gigantic athletes who everybody wants to get these days.

SA: What’s the key to playing like Barcelona?

TOM HOWE: The ability to play in tight spaces. You spend tons of time in playing in small, tight areas, and then when you get on the big field it’s not a big deal. I think more teams need work on the possession game. All the best teams in the world over the years have been great technical teams – like Spain, Barcelona. Teams like that play the best soccer.

At the youth level, too many people play more to win. My point is, if you teach your kids to play like Barcelona you’re eventually going to win.

You can see the rest of the conversation on the Soccer America website.

Tom Howe is the Executive Director of Player Development of the Woodson City Rangers. He was was a founding member of the Scott Gallagher SC, which won seven national championships and 14 regional titles under his direction. A collegiate All-American at SIU-Edwardsville, Howe played professionally for the St. Louis Stars, Denver Dynamos and Minnesota Kicks. He also coached at SIU-Edwardsville, Western Illinois, Florissant Valley Community College, Southwest Missouri State University and Saint Louis University.

Region II Soccer Tournament: Springfield SC Run Ends At Semi-Finals

Springfield Soccer ClubSpringfield SC U17′s – 1
Everest SC (Ohio) – 3 (OT)
Not too many details to share with you other than the boys came from behind to tie the game in regulation before giving up a pair of goals in overtime, ending their run in the semifinals again this year. I’ve come to know these boys well enough to know they are unhappy right now, a feeling I’m certain will fuel there already exhibited competitive spirit next Spring as they pursue three in a row.

Congratulations on an excellent season!

There are three Missouri teams remaining, pursuing Regional titles tomorrow, including the Scott Gallagher team that Springfield SC defeated in the State semi-finals. Good luck and represent!

Region II Tourney Update – Springfield SC Win First Game

Good news from Rockford where the U17 boys won their opening game on Saturday 4-0 over the FC Barrington squad from Illinois making their club’s first ever visit to Regionals. Goals were scored by Ryan Partch, Bryce Collier, Ian Kennedy and Devon Newport, continuing the broad-based scoring model that has gotten them this far.

Sunday’s opponent is the KC Wizards Juniors who defeated Northwest Indiana FC by a 6-1 score, making the game the key to moving out of the group on Tuesday.

Scott Gallagher, who qualified via Midwest Regional play, tied Bangu (MN) 1-1 in their opening group game.

Two-time regional champion (2003, 2005) and 2005 national champion (Under-15 Girls), St. Louis Soccer Club Under-18 Girls defeated Javanon (KY) 2:1. I think they are playing without All-Star Chealsey Russell (Kickapoo/Rice) who was injured in the State Final last week.

Springfield Soccer Club U17s Win 2nd Straight State Title

Missouri State Champions - Springfield SC U17s

In Penalty Kicks, the Springfield SC won 5-4 in 7 kicks. Captain Ryan Squires buried the 5th shot and the Fusz player put his shot over the crossbar, giving the defending Champions their second straight title. Goalkeeper Tommy Tombridge stopped two shots in the shootout, including the 5th won that could have won it for Fusz.

Scott Gallagher U16 Defeat St Louis SC in State Cup FinalI got to the Complex early and the U16 game was 0-0 when Scott Gallagher loses their goalkeeper to a foul outside the box. A defender steps in, regulation ends and it goes to OT. I’ll let “Goalz” from the STLsoccer.net message board tell the story:

4 goals in overtime…first one was by a great Busch shot from Dominic Hewitt off a rebound. Then a 35 yard cannon from James Meyerkord leveled it up. After that Busch answers on a free-kick from outside the box by Joe Bettger that would surely put it away…

But the SG side showed resilience to come back from a goal in OT for a second time by getting a somewhat questionable PK for many Busch fans. Great run by the Gallagher player. Mike Yuede finished the PK…and the whole time gallagher was playing a man down with a field player in goal.

In PKs each team made all 5, but the SG keeper (a field player) made a lunging save on the 6th to give his team an advantage. The 6th SG player scored.

I’ve got a few photos from the game you can see here via slideshow

There’s A New Sheriff In Town News

Final week of the regular season and you know what that means, eh folks. That’s right…

Waynesville visits Catholic on Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 pm. The Varsity play first and we’ll have a chance to see the two teams that have beaten Kickapoo and Glendale this season. It will also be one of your last chances to see Katie Pritchard with a ball at her feet, since next October she’ll be playing roundball for the Panthers. She’s a goal away from claiming second in career scoring in Missouri, and number one in large school scoring. And both teams are gearing up for the State Playoffs and this is a great way to send a message.

There’s one other game of note this week that needs no introduction. The Glendale Falcons visit Kickapoo on Wednesday for their Ozark Conference match up. The Chief’s lost 0-4 in early April as sophomore Lindsey Sprouse had a hat-trick in the Falcon’s shutout. Kickapoo will be without Jessica McCutcheon in goal due to injury (their 5th starter to go down) but the rivalry is strong. There will be a crowd out to cheer on both teams.

Springfield Soccer ClubCongratulations go out to the Springfield SC who had two teams advance to the semifinals this weekend at the Missouri State Cup. The U13 boys won their first two games ever in achieving that goal, before losing to a Scott Gallagher team yesterday morning. UPDATE – Got to call you on this sentence!! The U13 division is the youngest age group at state cup. The U13 team won their first two games at Cup and got to the semifinal…the first time ever a U13 team from SGF has done that (including current U17s). BTW the U17 game was won by one of the best shots you’ll ever see anywhere, an absolute corker straight into the top corner through a penalty box of defenders, by Tim Griffin from about 25 yards out. The U17 boys, defending State Champions, defeated Scott Gallagher in OT to advance to the Final again this year. It will be played this Saturday at 3:00 pm at the SLYSA Fields in St Charles, MO. I’ll be there to cover the story and celebrate Mother’s Day with my Mom. It’s also my Dad’s birthday on Saturday so lot’s of good reasons to be in St Louis rather than Springfield.

I mention that in advance of reminding you that Saturday is also the home opener for the Springfield Demize. I normally make the Professional Development League (PDL) games a priority but I’ve got a a conflict this weekend :) I think they are a great opportunity to see some quality soccer with future professional players you’ll be able to say “I remember when…”

Southwest Soccer All StarsWe’re in the final stages of the Southwest All-Star game as well. As noted earlier, I’m out seeing as many games as possible as part of the evaluation process. We anticipate making the announcement of the Girls Roster by Wednesday May 14th.

If your Booster Club or business would like to recognize the players that will be represented and support our efforts to bring you this game, please contact me so I can provide information on placing an ad in the Program. Thanks Folks, see you at the pitch!
