Missouri High School Soccer: Girls Class 1 District 11 Preview
There are three teams that will compete in the District this year. Joplin McAuley, Greenwood and Springfield Catholic.
The McAuley Warriors are aptly named, I always enjoy covering the ladies in Blue. Classic underdogs, the team struggled to maintain a roster of 11 players last year but never backed down. I don’t root often but it’s great seeing competitive games and the Warrior’s never disappoint. Their spirits are high this year as their team-sharing agreement with College Height’s kicks in. The two schools combined for one boys team last year (College Heights) and this year they Girls team plays under the McAuley banner. Rumor has it there could be as many as 18 on the final roster. Like most teams in the region, an influx of freshman will only help. The Greenwood Blue Jays will field a young team that will also rely on some incoming freshmen. The team lost three senior starters, all in critical roles in the middle – Maddy Esther (currently playing at D3 Rhodes College), Maddy Smith and Caroline Jansen. There is one senior returning starter, Sydney Ganus (defender) last seen doing yeoman work in the District Final loss to Catholic, including clearing a sure goal by heading it out off the line. She’s joined by Sara Cook (11th grade), the twins Mary Margaret Kirkman (10th grade) and Anna Grace Kirkman (10th grade) along with Annabelle Chaffin (11th grade) in offering leadership for the young team. There are several freshman prospects that are expected make a difference including Anna Turner (defender), Kelsey Nau (midfielder) and Anna Martinez (yes, Alex’s sister from Glendale) at midfield. The most critical item will be identifying a goalkeeper for this team that had approximately two dozen out Thursday evening. Head Coach Chris Shull is being assisted by former Drury Panther Ally Reynolds this year. How about the defending District and State Champion Springfield Catholic Fightin’ Irish? The Senior Class, led by midfielder Natalie Smid, is in my estimation the group that is most responsible for the regular run to State that has marked this program recently. They will be shooting for their 3rd straight trip to the Final 4 this season and a 2nd straight title. The most significant change for the team will be the loss of senior goalkeeper Rachel Scott. Scott, who has been accepted to Yale and has her sights set on a career in neurological surgery, is focused on preparing for that career this season.
The good news is that junior Megan Goetzinger, who split time in goal with Scott last season and was recognized with Rachel as 2nd Team All-State GK’s, returns and now takes charge in the net. She’ll have 1st All-State defenders Carsen Baron and Rebecca Mayus fronting her which is a plethora of riches any Coach in the region would enjoy. Add a pair of D2 college signee’s in Andrea Parker and Shelby Hatz, who will continue their careers at Drury in the Fall, and the Irish should continue their winning ways. Check out my earlier story for additional impact players.
There were over 50 players at practice on Thursday but it wasn’t a complete contingent as junior Bekah Bade (who scored the game-winner in the title game last June) among others was missing with the basketball season just ending. There are two freshman to keep an eye on going into this season as well. Nicole Ortega joins her sister Emily and Lydia Holtman follows in the footsteps of her All-Star sister Elle who is a senior at Rockhurst. With a senior class of 12, Coach Timson will need to find a balance that helps prepare the underclassmen for next year. A tough problem to have, he’s being assisted this year by Sarah Linsin and Jordan Reppell from Missouri State. Pretty nice role models when you can drive by a billboard and say – hey, there’s my coach!

Class 1 District 6 – Catholic and Greenwood Reach Final
#2 Greenwood Blue Jays – 5
#3 Laquey Hornets – 1
The Jay’s wasted no time getting on the board this evening when Maddie Esther’s run to the endline led to a square ball to M Kirkman on the edge of the box. She found Sara Cook near the penalty spot and one touch later it’s in the back of the net.
It seemed Greenwood might run away with the game when in the 12th Caroline Jansen headed in a corner kick. Until, that is, the Hornet’s woke up.
Following a series of runs into the offensive end, Greenwood was called for a foul outside the box. Sr Emily Murray stepped up and buried the direct kick and shortly after Coach Shull pulled Esther back to provide defensive cover.
Greenwood found their mojo again later in the half, after Esther made a 50 yard run thru the defense before hammering her shot off the upright. The next time down, a simple pass back to the top of the box and Vook redirected the ball to the far post for a 3-1 halftime lead,
Cook got her hattrick in the 52nd after the Jays got their possession game on track and she was the final beneficiary following a series of quick passes. Jensen completed the scoring with about 10 min remaining.
#1 Springfield Catholic – 10
#4 Liberty Mt View Eagles – 0
It was 7-0 at halftime and the game ended in the 43rd min
The Final will be played at Catholic HS BUT will begin at 4:00 pm on Wednesday to avoid the anticipated rain. If rain moves in sooner during the day, anticipate a move to Harrison Stadium.

Tuesday Soccer Report
Greenwood Blue Jays – 7
The Blue Jays opened their season this evening by visiting Harrison Stadium to play the Bulldogs. The two teams traded goals in the first 35 minutes with Greenwood scoring first before the Bulldogs fought back, scoring when junior Nicky Murphy curled a corner kick directly into the net. The wind had an effect on both teams and the Blue Jays finally sorted things out to score two goals in the final 3 minutes of the first half.
Once Greenwood was playing with the wind, their superior speed opened up the play even further leading to the final margin. Goals were scored by Mary-Margaret Kirkman, who had a hat trick as did sophomore Sara Cook. Senior Maddy Esther completed the scoring for the Blue Jays. By the way, send a shout out to Mary-Margaret Kirkman and her twin sister, Anna-Grace Kirkman, who moved here from Searcy, AR in January. After helping the Jay’s basketball program they are now on the pitch causing problems for opposing teams with their speed and game awareness.
Joplin Eagles – 2
Carthage Tigers – 0
The last time these two teams met was in the District playoffs last year when the first year Tigers fell in the first round by a 0-3 score.
Parkview Vikings – 1 (PK’s)
Nixa Eagles – 0
Quite a battle on the West side tonight as the District 11 foes battled to a scoreless tie through regulation and two OT periods. PK’s went to the fifth and final shooters with Nixa’s shot going wide while junior Kelsey Loderhose buried her PK for the Viking’s win.
Jeff City Jays – 1
Camdenton Lakers – 0
In the word’s of Laker’s Coach JD Hunter “Kinsey Shouse scores on a PK after a foul in the box was called on Camdenton 20 minutes into the first half. I wish I could say it was a bad call, but the call was dead on and so was the penalty kick.” Jeff City is the defending District 10 champion while Camdenton lost in PK’s in the semifinal round last year to Rolla, who in turn lost to Jeff City in the final.
Marshfield Blue Jays – 1
Bolivar Liberators – 3
Tied 1-1 at half, Bolivar earned the win with a second half pk and a last minute goal on a corner. Kylea Ryser scored for Marshfield as these District and COC foes renewed their rivalry.
Logan-Rogersville Wildcats – 0
Catholic Fightin’ Irish – 3
Hillcrest Hornets – 2
Carl Junction Bulldogs – 0
The Hornets get their second win in two days! Goals by Cassie Ferrell and Courtney Busby. Shutout by Laurie Orr.
Laquey –
St James Bulldogs -
Poplar Bluff Mules – 3
West Plains Zizzers – 0
The Lady Zizzers started the game strong, moving the ball and created some scoring chances, but couldn’t find the net. About midway through the half, the momentum shifted to Poplar Bluff. The Lady Mules opened the scoring in the 29th minute as Allie Pattillo sent Marissa Burroughs in behind the defense where she sent a ball past Sammi Phegley for a 1-0 lead.
Lebanon Yellowjackets – 0
Kickapoo Chiefs – 1
The Chief’s pull out the win in this low-scoring Conference game.
Neosho Wildcats –
Joplin McAuley -
Missouri High School Girls Soccer: Class 1 District 6 Semifinal Round

#3 McAuley Warriors – 4
#2 Greenwood Blue Jays – 3
In a game that mirrors the regular season match up between these two schools, it was McAuley that storms back from a 3-1 deficit to first tie, and finally win the match this evening. A replica of Greenwood’s results at McAuley in late April. Greenwood set the tone early when Maddie Esther buried a shot from 35 yards out in the 3rd minute of the match. Midway through the half, freshman Sara Cook got through the defense and scored to push the Jay’s ahead as they put together a beautiful game for the first 30 minutes tonight. Ball movement, team defense, it was all there but slowly the Warriors clawed their way back into the game. The first goal was scored in stoppage time in the first half and came from senior Jae Stephens as the Warriors fought to keep the ball in the offensive end following a corner kick and Jae put a loose ball into the roof of the net.
The Jay’s came out strong again in the 2nd half, extending their lead to 2 yet again when Mariah Allai received a pass on the left side of the box and slid her shot to the far post in the 47th minute. There was plenty of action for both teams in the remaining 30 minutes but the momentum, and the win, went to the upstarts. The Warriors got their 2nd goal in the 53rd minute when senior Arielle Santillan finally broke free of the Jay’s tough defense and her shot as she entered the box went just inside the right upright. The Jay’s still had a one goal lead and midway through the half were awarded a PK for a push in the box. Sarah Onstot was able to dive to her right and push the PK wide of the net however and you could begin to sense that maybe things might not go Greenwood’s way. When Santillan got past the defense and knocked her shot in off the right upright in the 68th minute, the tension was palable. It was the Warrior’s who responded to the situation as their team of 13 did not quit. When they earned a corner kick in the final three minutes, it was the third shot that did in the Jays as sophomore Samantha Graham was able to corral an attempted clearance and push it back into the box where senor Erin O’Keefe was able to react to the ball and lift it into the roof of the net above the charging keeper.
Quite a game and a testament to the effort and teamwork that McAuley was able to display. For Greenwood, a difficult lesson made all the more harsh by the quality of play they showed in the first third of the game.

Thursday Ozarks High School Girls Soccer Report

Greenwood Blue Jays – 2
Rogersville Wildcats – 1
On senior night, freshman Sara Cook scored a goal in each half to help the Blue Jays earn the win against the Wildcats. The first goal came after a scramble in the box and Sara got a shot off a weak clearance that took a wicked bounce in the torn up turf at Field 3 and got past the keeper. Her second goal was worthy of any league in the country when she one-timed a square ball from senior Mariah Allai and buried the ball just inside the near upright on a blast from 16 yards out.
While Greenwood had the majority of the play, Rogersville still has the ability to score despite significant injuries to their already small 1st year roster. Quality play by senior goalkeeper Lauren Cook (pictured above) gave the Jays the margin needed for the win. The Wildcat’s goal was scored by Najee Donson in stoppage time.
There are a large number of senior photos for viewing and purchase on my commercial photo site.

Mtn View Liberty Eagles – 1
In the 11th minute of the half, Katie Shannon took a ball near midfield and dribbled toward the goal. Shannon shot from near the edge of the 18 yard box as the keeper came out to cut down the angle. The ball found the back of the net, giving West Plains a 1-0 lead. Shelly Renegar tied the game for the Eagles from the spot soon afterwards. The game winner came when Ashley Harris battled with a Liberty defender before finally getting past her. After cutting in toward the goal, the goalkeeper started coming out and Harris sent a nice low cross to a wide open Dani Valade in front of the goal who redirected the ball into the back of the net.
