In a time when some high school All-State athletes can’t be bothered to even show up at All-State competitions, Ashley Bechtold proved she’s a throwback to the days when players honored the honor.

What’s more, Saturday the Putnam City North soccer standout also provided a lesson in competitive spirit and toughness.
Bechtold started in goal for the Class 6A girls in the Oklahoma Soccer Coaches Association All-State game at Sand Springs High School. The match, which ended in a 1-1 tie, was Bechtold’s first time back between the pipes since breaking her collarbone just four games into the season.

Bechtold will challenge junior Randi Russell (Joplin) for playing time in goal. Russell started 19 of the Lions 20 games in 2009, allowing 38 for a 1.96 GAA while making 118 and finishing with a 5-14 record and 2 shutouts.

Bellarmine Lady Knights – 0
Freshman Lindsey Krull put the lone score on the board for the Tritons, firing a shot from the top of the box and netting the goal in the 72nd minute off a player deflection following a corner kick by junior Danielle Dahm. It came after the Tritons were outshot overall but saw two shots go off the upright, one in each half. With the win, UMSL moves its ledger to 3-4-1 on the season, including 3-1-1 in the GLVC. Anne Prenger (Catholic 2008) is pictured winning the header for the Tritons.

Anne Prenger notched the game winner in Friday’s win over Kentucky Wesleyan in the 98th minute of play on a corner kick by junior AJ Brewer. It was Prenger’s first career goal and the second assist of the season for Brewer.

Bellarmine Knights – 1
The Knights put the lone goal of the game on the board just 16 minutes into the contest on a header from Grant Wheeler on the close right wing. The loss drops the Tritons to 5-4-1 on the season, including 1-4 in the GLVC. Bellarmine, which won its first league game of the year, improves to 3-4-2 and 1-3-1 in the league.

The Greyhounds downed previously unbeaten and GLVC-leading Drury 3-2 Sunday afternoon, to run their record to 4-3-2 on the season and 3-1-2 in conference play. The Panthers fall to 8-1 on the season and 5-1 in the GLVC. Brian Fishback (Parkview 2005) assisted on the third Greyhound goal. For the Panthers, Stephen Conner (Glendale 2007) replaced starter Logan Hoffman in the 20th minute after Hoffman was injured. St Joseph Pumas – 1
The Pumas drew first blood in the 52nd minute, scoring after a rebound from just outside the box. The Miners were able to draw even a little over three minutes later on a set piece, as Andy Held got to Brandon Moore’s free kick and headed the ball past Alex Makin at the 54:53 mark.

St Joseph Pumas – 1
The Puma’s scored in the first minute but saw the Miner’s score six in coming back for the big win.

Saturday at St Joseph: Stephanie Heines scored off an assist from Audrey Copenhaver to lead the Missouri Southern Lions to their first MIAA win of the season. Randi Russell (Joplin 2008) stopped five shots for Southern in her first career shutout.

Senior Allison Osmundson netted the game-winning goal at the 61:38 minute mark in the second-half to give Missouri State their second win on the weekend. The Bears improved their record to 5-3-1 on the season. Tara Bailes (Catholic 2008) came on as a substitute.

The Panthers wasted little time getting on the board, with Nicole Williams getting a goal off a Mandi Little assist at the 4:41 mark. The Panthers pulled out of a halftime tie with two second-half goals to beat Bellarmine 3-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. The Panthers are now 4-2-1 overall and a league-leading 4-0 in GLVC play.

Receiving another two goals from junior Steve Wilczewski, the Drury men’s soccer Panthers blanked Bellarmine4-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Sunday. Wilczewski (Glendale 2006) scored his league-leading seventh and eighth goals to help the Panthers move to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the GLVC. Adam Peterson (Kickapoo 2007) also added a goal and an assist. Kyler Temple (Kickapoo 2008), Alex Palmer (Kickapoo 2007) and Danny Collins (Glendale 2007) also played.

In a tough-fought match, SBU’s lone goal came in the 32nd minute of the first half. Nicola Cousins was the scorer, putting her at 6 goals for the season. She was supplied by sophomore, Jaymye Ross. Ross now has 4 assists for the season. Johanna Olsson kept her third clean sheet of the year, making 7 saves. SBU now sits at 4-0 on the season and 3-0 in the MIAA.

Steven Beattie broke a one-all tie with a goal 14 minutes into the second half and the Norse, ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA Division II poll, added a second goal later in the period to come away with their 29th straight regular season win since the Miners won at NKU in 2006. Hays (Kickapoo 2008) and Moore (Rolla 2005) started.

With the match knotted at 1-1, the No. 5-ranked Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Missouri Southern Lions 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Omaha, Neb. Freshman Randi Russell (Joplin 2008) made a career-high nine saves for the Lions while earning her second straight start. McKenzie (Webb City 2008) started, with Altman (Joplin 2008) and Ragains (Lebanon 2008) coming on as substitutes.

The Lions (0-7-1, 0-2-1 SSC) stayed close throughout the match despite being out-shot 17-5 overall, including a 14-3 bulge in the second half. The #14 Buffs held an 8-2 edge in shots-on-goal. Freshman Stuart Ziegler (West Plains 2008) had a team-high two shots for the Lions. Clevenger (College Heights 2006) started and Nate Evans (Cassville 2007) came on as a sub.

Valparaiso Crusaders – 1
The Bears opened strong Friday evening, coming off of their Tournament win at New Mexico last week. Attacking with verve, they wasted no time exploiting the first opportunity to present itself. Kyle Windmueller, the man the MSU Standard calls the “go-to guy” did just that, beating his defender on the left side. His run into the box created space that midfielder Ryan Hennessey filled, receiving the square ball near the spot before slotting his shot just inside the far post in the 11th minute. The Bears kept up the attack, earning a 6-3 advantage in shots in the half.

The second half provided a mirror image of the first, with the Crusaders creating more opportunities, and beating the Bears with a goal in the 87th minute. It was scored by senior Paul Leitelt from 20 yards out as he found space of his own to hammer a shot to the far side netting. It might have been worse but the Bears were fortunate that Brandon Durk was prepared in the 75th minute, as he intercepted a crossing pass at the far post that he knocked down and goal keeper Alex Riggs quickly collected.

Two overtime periods with one near miss for the Bears as a set piece skipped just beyond Thomas Vania’s reach in the six yard box. Tonight marked the return of Springfield Demize player Isreal Bisoni (pictured, underneath MSU’s Justin Alford) who joined the Crusaders from Coffeyville CC, along with his teammate Rodolfo Lucas. Bisoni came on midway through the 1st half and played the majority of the game this evening at forward.

The Missouri State women’s soccer team dominated Nicholls State in a 7-0 shutout victory on Friday night in the first match of the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, AR. Tara Bailes (Catholic 2008) came on as a substitute while scoring 1 goal and providing an assist as well.

The Drury University soccer Panthers kept their unbeaten start intact, defeating Kentucky Wesleyan 5-1 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match Friday afternoon. The Panthers, now 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the GLVC, received two goals from senior forward Marco Cherisma – pushing his season total to five – and single goals from juniors Steve Wilczewski (Glendale 2006) and Andrew Bordelon and sophomore Micah Whorton. Kyler Temple (Kickapoo 2008), Adam Peterson (Kickapoo 2007), Alex Palmer (Kickapoo 2007) and Danny Collins (Glendale 2007) all came on as substitutes in the game. Wilczewski, Drury’s leading scorer, was also interviewed by the Drury Mirror recently. Key take away?

A: I would have to say Glendale/Kickapoo, even though it’s a Glendale dominated rivalry.

Amanda Deml scored the only goal of the match on a free kick from 20 yards out to lead the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats to a 1-0 win over the Missouri Southern Lions in MIAA action Thursday afternoon. Joplin Eagle 2008 graduates Randi Russell and Lindsay Altman both got their first starts of the season, with Brianna McKenzie (Webb City 2008) and Brianna Ragains (Lebanon 2008) coming on as substitutes. Rusell went the entire 90 minutes, with 2 saves.

Sunday Ozarks Regional College Report

Southwest Baptist Bearcats won both of their MIAA matches this weekend. On Thursday they traveled to Emporia State where they won 3-1.

On Saturday, they went to Joplin where they dismantled the MSSU Lions, 6- 1. SBU’s Rhiane Mitchell, who entered the week at the very top of the NCAA’s points and goals leader board, scored three goals and recorded one assist. Nicola Cousins added SBU’s other three goals in that game. Mitchell now has 10 goals. The SBU season record is 17.

Natascha Lord (Waynesville 2008) and Ashley Wilson (Neosho 2007) came on as substitutes in both games for the Bearcats, with Lord getting a shot on goal Saturday at MSSU.

Miners Logo headMissouri S&T Miners also opened GLVC play this weekend, hosting the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles on Friday. The women won 2-1 in overtime with Brooke Ryan getting the game-winner in the 5th minute of OT. The men won 1-0 on a first half goal by Nick Landon. Zack Hay (Kickapoo 2008) started his 4th straight game, getting a shot on goal as well. Brandon Moore (Rolla 2005) is a captain and 3 year starter for the Miners.

The games against Kentucky Weslyan Sunday

Drury Panthers LogoThe Drury Panthers women opened GLVC play this weekend with a pair of wins, rebounding well from last weeks shocking loss to Harding. Friday night Drury beat UMSL 1-0, which included Anne Prenger (Catholic 2008) who came on as a substitute for the Tritons.

Micah Little’s corner kick was deflected by UMSL keeper Hannah Sayre, but Colvin-Fritz was there to score off the rebound at 2:15 and give the defending GLVC champion Panthers all the offense they would need despite being outshot 11-6 in the contest.

Their game Sunday against Southern Indiana was a 2-0 win, on a pair of goals late in the first half by Alyssa Alcorn and Melissa Perry.

The Men also defeated UMSL, by a 2-1 score, with Steve Wilczewski (Glendale 2006) getting the ultimate game-winner in the 16th. Marco Cherisma got his first goal of the season as well. Kyler Temple (Kickapoo 2008) and Adam Peterson (Kickapoo 2007) came on as substitutes in the game.

Sunday’s game against Southern Indiana

Missouri Southern LionsThe Missouri Southern Lions women had a tough opening to the MIAA season, losing to Central Missouri State in overtime on Thursday followed by the tough loss to SBU on Saturday (see above).

Brianna McKenzie (Webb City 2008) came on as a substitute in both games, while Lindsay Altman (Joplin 2008) and Brianna Ragains (Lebanon 2008) played on Thursday, with Ragains getting a SOG. On Saturday Randi Russell (Joplin 2008) got her first minutes in goal, playing the final 18 minutes of the game, giving up one goal and making one save.

The men did not play. Their scheduled game at Rockhurst was canceled due to the weather.

The 2-1 overtime win over the Cal-Poly Mustangs on Friday was the result of freshman Jordan Barnes stealing an errant back pass and beating the goalkeeper with a shot to the far post just 1:36 into the overtime period.

Joplin opened the scoring in this match in the 15th minute, scoring via PK following a foul in the box. The visitors lead disappeared when Lebanon evened the score with a header by Ashley Shockley on a corner from Hanna Winkel. The Yellowjackets scored again shortly before half with a header by Chelsea LeFors off of a nice cross from the corner from Cassie Wood. The Jackets finished the scoring with a cross by Hanna Winkel knocked in by Michelle Lindesmith. Joplin goalie Randi Russell once again kept things close.

Kickapoo Chiefs vs Camdenton LakersKickapoo Chiefs – 3
Camdenton Lakers – 0
The Chiefs got their fourth straight win, shutting out the visiting Lady Lakers while moving to 9-8 on the season. A direct kick by Katy McLain from almost 30 yards out slipped under the crossbar to give the Chiefs the lead in the 18th minute. As has been the case in the three games I’ve seen the past two weeks, the Chiefs calmly went about their business, challenging every ball and slowly wearing down their opponents. With junior Amanda Dominguez (pictured on left) the one constant in the central midfield this season, the Chiefs have been able to move the ball and create their own luck, a welcome change for their supporters following the slow start to this season.

In the 31st, a foul on the left side allowed McLain to put a ball into the box via a set piece. Sophomore Megan Etter ran onto it and got just enough of it to cause the goal keeper difficulty and see it roll across the end line. Etter would almost get a second late in the second half when her header from McLain’s cross rang off the crossbar. It was freshman McKenna Adams that completed the scoring though when she put a ball into the roof of the net from inside the 6 yard box on a cross. Yet another example of the focused approach the Chiefs are taking as they anticipate their rematch with the Glendale Falcons next Wednesday to complete their regular season. Slide Show

The Tigers got goals in the 21st and 51st minute to earn the win. Bolivar put one of the crossbar and Paige Hemphill stopped another late opportunity to preserve the shutout. Ozark goals were scored by Megan Stodden from Megan Jenisch and Brittany Matthews from Megan Gunnels.

The Vikings were up 1-0 at the break, with the goal coming from an indirect kick from about twenty-five yards out. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Maerz touched the ball and freshman Kelsey Loderhose hammered the ball into the upper corner of the far-post netting. More

In a surprisingly tight game, Catholic finally scored in the second half, goal by Anna DeLong from Natalie Smid. Nixa senior Stephanie Allen tied the game, from Jo Pavlowski’s assist, to force overtime. DeLong got the game-winner in the first OT period, from freshman Carsen Baron.

Goals were scored by Erica Combs in the first half off of an assist by Orielle Thomas. Second Half goals were scored by Shanna Neeley and by Katie Pritchard from a Neeley corner kick. Hutchinson gets the shutout.

The Tigers improved to 9-0 and 5-0 in Ozark Conference with the win over their local foe. They will play at Lebanon on Thursday. The Yellowjackets improved to 4-0 in the Conference with their win over Hillcrest tonight.

The Yellowjackets got goals from six players. Michelle Lindesmith, Hanna Winkel (2), Brianna Ragains, Cassie Wood, Janel Glidden and Britney Hall, a senior defender – first career goal.

Parkview Vikings – 3
The Falcons got past local rival Parkview tonight, as senior Jamie Bond scored a brace, Emily Cline continues her streak and Megan Garrad got the final goal. Jeni Frewin had a pair of assists. For the Vikings, goals were scored by Shelbie Stewart, Emmy Dale and Jessica Maerz.

Camdenton Lakers – 3
West Plains Zizzers – 0
Megan Manzer opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Stephanie Kirvan, assisted by Latea LaRue, added another in the 16th minute. Sandra Shore, assisted by Stephanie Kirvan, completed the scoring in the 65th minute

Kickapoo Chiefs – 0
The Joplin Eagles got a goal from MSSU signee jr. Kelsey Sanders in the 42nd minute and held on for a 1-0 soccer victory over the Chiefs. Joplin goalie Randi Russell, an MSSU signee, had 11 saves in picking up the shutout. Kickapoo outshot the Eagles 13-7.

Chealsey Russell scored on a short shot assisted by a header from Paige Blotter off a Katie McLain corner for a 1-0 lead in the first half. The Chiefs extended their lead when Megan Melugin scored on an assist from Russell. Her shot came from near the 18 yard line and was sent to the keeper’s upper right. Rolla cut the lead to 2-1 when freshmen Ellen Spooner connect on a long throw into the 18. As at least one Chief’s player noted on their Facebook page – finally! We clicked and WE KILLED :) Goodbye Rolla! :)

Lebanon Yellowjackets – 3
Parkview Vikings – 2
First half goal by Stephanie Fore. Parkview scored first in the 2nd half, by Emmy Dale from Jessica Maerz, to tie the game. Hanna Winkel scored for Lebanon to regain the lead. Parkview answered again, by Maerz from Melanie Allen, and the game remained tied until the final minutes when Lebanon was awarded a PK for a foul in the box. Winning PK made by Hanna Winkel. Field was not sloppy, but very slick. Both Parkview goals occurred when Lebanon was pushed up, the ball got through the defense, and Lebanon didn’t recover well.

JV tied 1-1. Tying goal made on a PK in the final minutes by Lebanon Freshman Brayli Hall.

From the Zizzer website – Joplin opened the scoring in the 34th minute. After a Joplin corner kick, West Plains failed to clear the ball. Rachel Lazenby picked up the loose ball and fired a shot to the far corner from near the top of the 18-yard box. 1-0 Joplin. The Lady Eagles would add a second goal in the 38th minute. Lauren Copple’s crossfrom the right side found Stephanie Loden near the back post. Loden headed the ball in for a 2-0 Joplin lead. In the 44th minute, Michelle Esterle carried the ball down the field on the counterattack. Rachel Skelly made a late run into the play. Esterle laid the ball off to Skelly who worked a give and go to Esterle. As she entered the 18-yard box, Esterle sent a shot past Joplin Keeper Randi Russell to cut the lead to 2-1. In the 50th, Kelly Yount knocked it in to make it 3-1 Joplin

The Christian County derby went to the surging Tigers, who opened the scoring in the 30th minute from Brittany Matthews from Erica Hogan’s long range strike. Hogan got one of her own to open the second half followed by Megan Gunnels goal. Senior Stephanie Allen got one back for Nixa only to see Megan Jenisch score for Ozark, from Gunnels. Allen got another to finish the scoring late.

Senior Kristen Glaubitz buries a ball in the corner from a set piece midway through the second half to give the Tigers the rare win over their longtime rivals. Coach Tom Davidson earns his 500th win as his Lady Tigers held off the Irish in earning the win. The goal came against the run of play as the Irish had the wind and momentum but sophomore Brittany Matthew’s strong run led to a foul on the left side of the box. Rachel Haden’s service was initially knocked down but fell to Glaubitz who took advantage of the opportunity.

The Irish’s best opportunity came late in the game when freshman Carsen Baron put her 30 yard direct kick on frame. Sophomore Paige Hemphill touched it over the crossbar to preserve the shutout and win.

The Tigers continued their early season form, taking a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Katie Pritchard, from Lauren Kelly, and Erica Combs, from Tasha Lord. Kickapoo closed the gap in the 73rd minute when Kylie Huslig scored from a cross by right midfielder ?. Senior Crystal Hutchinson made several important saves to ensure the win for the Tigers who move to 4-0 with their first Conference win over a key foe. Update – it was the first win ever over the Chiefs!

Senior Brianna Ragains, headed for Missouri Southern in the Fall, gave the Yellowjackets the lead in the 17th minute, assisted by Cassie Wood. Hanna Winkel added to the lead in the 49th, assisted by Emily Boyer. Chelsea LeFors completed the scoring, assisted by Ragains. Zizzer’s goalie Jamie Brassfield made several fine saves to keep it close

Sophomore central midfielder Jackie Standfast got the game winner in the 62nd minute on an assist by senior captain Kaitlin Bramel. Sophomore Adrian Pogue gets the shutout, her 3rd in 4 games. The Bulldogs move to 4-0, 1-0 in Ozark Conference, and will visit Springfield to take on Kickapoo Thursday.

The Eagles kept things close in the first half, down only 0-1 with senior Randi Russell, a Missouri Southern signee, making several important saves. Senior Jeni Frewin got the ultimate game winner. The second half saw the Falcons turn things on, using the wind and their team speed to get three goals in the first 15 minutes. Lindsey Sprouse got two, Emily Cline (pictured at left) scored her first varsity goal and Frewin and Emily Jordan earned assists. Senior goalkeeper Rachel Duckworth, a newcomer to soccer with good hands and reflexes, earns her first shutout.

The Eagles lost on PK’s Tuesday to a resilient Wildcats squad that drew first blood on a break away goal by Melanie White in the 53rd minute. The Eagles tied the game in the 58th. Jacklyn Finley played the ball to Kelsey Haist above the 18 box. Haist beat the defender. A well placed, low ball slotted to the left of the goalie tied the score 1-1.

Camdenton led 1-0 at the half on a goal by freshman Ashley Paschel. Sophomore Chelsey VanHook started off the scoring in the second half off of a corner kick from Blaire Baker. Paschel scored her second goal of the match four minutes later. Senior Meg Manzer and junior Stephanie Kirvan (header) each scored a goal late in the match. Camdenton goes to 1-1-0 on the season and 1-0 in Ozark Conference play. Senior Krista Murphy earned her first shutout of the season

Bolivar Liberators – 2
Joplin McAuley – 0
The Lady Liberators earned their third shut-out victory of the season with a 2-0 win over district opponent Joplin McAuley. Seniors Lindsy Archer, assisted by Jonna Welch, and Andrea Porter scored a goal in each half to help the Liberators improve to 3-0 on the season.

Missouri Southern Lions Sign 11 For Soccer

Missouri Southern LionsA total of 11 soccer players have signed letters-of-intent with Missouri Southern.

Kevin Aubuchon, a senior at St. Mary’s High School in St. Louis, is the lone men’s signee. He led the Dragons in scoring his senior year, earned first team all-conference honors the last two years and was a third team all-metro selection.

The Lions’ 10 women signees include Randi Russell and Stephanie Taylor from Joplin and Brianna McKenzie from Webb City. McKenzie did not play in high school since Webb City does not have a girls soccer team, but she has been part of the Arkansas Olympic Development Program.

The Lions signed another player from the Ozark Conference. Brianna Ragains set several school records at Lebanon, including career goals (66) and assists (40) entering her senior season this spring.

Also joining the Lions are goalkeeper Kimberly DeRaedt from Elgin, Ill., defenders Laura Creason from Blue Springs and Kara Hammann from St. Charles, defender/forward Michelle Dimza from Notre Dame High School in St. Louis, midfielder/forward Shannon Kuhn from Wentzville and utility player Audrey Copenhaver from St. Teresa’s Academy in Kansas City.

Copenhaver helped St. Teresa’s win state championships her freshman and sophomore years and was named the team’s most valuable player as a junior.

Creason and Dimza have been named to all-area teams, Kuhn has been her team’s leading scorer for three years, and DeRaedt posted 25 shutouts during the last two seasons.
