This Week In Ozarks Soccer

2010 WC LogoThe US Men’s team continues their pursuit of a place in World Cup 2010, facing off against Trinidad and Tobago in Nashville on Wednesday, April 1st. The game is being broadcast on ESPN2 at 6:30 pm. I’ll be at Quincy Magoo’s at 900 E Battlefield for the game, feel free to come out and join me. Hopefully the result, and the quality of the game, will be better than what was exhibited Saturday in El Salvador.

I’m still in St Louis, meeting with a new client Monday. Tuesday I’ll be lobbying in Jefferson City, in my role as President of the Missouri Film Alliance of Springfield, promoting the business generation that tax credits offer our local businesses. If you’re a fan of independent films, or a business interested in learning about how to use video in sales and marketing, check out the website I’ve created and sign up for our newsletter.

I may have an opportunity to cover the Jeff City Jays game on Tuesday, as they host the Camdenton Lakers. I’m hearing some very positive things about the Jays, who are now part of District 10 with Camdenton, Rolla and Lebanon. Based upon early results, that District is beginning to look like a real dogfight which will make this a key early match up.

Thursday marks the start of the Christian County Tournament, jointly hosted by Ozark and Nixa High School. A very large slate of games through Saturday day that will get my attention. I’ll have more details later this week and there will be game reports, photos and video interviews to offer.

Coca-Cola Cup Logo Friday will bring the 4th anniversary of this website and I’ll be celebrating by covering the Kickapoo vs Catholic game, the first game covered by SGFsoccer.com and a regular stop for many fans in the region due to it’s competitive nature. The Greenwood Blue Jays will be hosting their Classic on Saturday, which includes Carthage and two other teams I’m still trying to identify. More on that to come.

Time to also gear up and be kind to the soccer tourists who will be visiting Springfield. Lake Country Soccer is hosting the 9th Annual Coca-Cola/Dr Pepper Cup at the facilities on the Eastside and we’ll have a large crowd in town. If you have a team participating (Boys U9 up to U18, and girls U9 up to U14) let me know the schedules so I can try and make it out for a game or two. Hopefully the weather will cooperate better than it did here in St Louis where I’m aware of teams who didn’t play a single game.

drury-logo-miniAh, and for the fan of the college game, the Drury Panthers will be playing several games on Saturday at Harrison Stadium. The Women have the Central Missouri State Mules and the Missouri S&T Miner’s visiting for a pair of games while the men will be hosting Mid-America Nazarene which includes Matthew Gow (Lebanon/Springfield Demize). There will be a second team announced as well.

The Missouri State Lady Bears are traveling this week for a pair of games at Oklahoma State while the Men will be in St Louis to take on the SLU Billikens. Both teams are playing on Saturday.

This Week In Ozarks Soccer

One week to go before High School practice begins but the folks in Joplin are already excited about the upcoming season. The video features Joplin Eagle’s Coach Ed Miller discussing all things soccer on the Joplin High School TV network. It includes an update on the contributions the Eagle’s made to the Missouri Southern Lion’s women’s squad and an update on who to watch on the Eagle’s team this Spring.

One week. I was going to have a redesigned Springfield Soccer website up prior to the start of the Girls season so if that’s the case, I’m going to have to put the pedal to the metal. Maybe I won’t count practice as part of the season…

I need your help. I’m going to put a few polls up, to confirm what I think I know about this website and your interests. The more of you that offer an opinion (once) the better off we’ll all be.

The Champion’s League is down to the Round of 16, with first legs scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday this week. There are UEFA Champions League – LIVE! broadcasts to enjoy:

Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (Inter And Milan) Milan, Italy
Wednesday 1:30 pm on ESPN2 – Chelsea FC vs. Juventus FC
Stamford Bridge (Chelsea) London, England

I’ll be at Quincy Magoo’s taking in the games, come out and join me and help sell the owners on the value of advertising to the soccer community.

There are also late games to enjoy on ESPN Classic:
Tuesday 4:00 pm – Olympique Lyonnais vs. FC Barcelona
Stade de Gerland Lyon, France
Tuesday 6:00 pm – UEFA Champions League Today
Wednesday 4:00 pm – Real Madrid CF vs. Liverpool
Estadio Santiago Bernabeu Madrid, Spain
Wednesday 6:00 pm – UEFA Champions League Today

Oh, and for those of you who are still paying attention to this nonsense, the Editor of the student paper at Southwest Baptist contacted me today about this story and another one coming up:

I’m the managing editor for our student newspaper: the Omnibus. On Wednesday, I have a comprehensive story of the Wade firing. I have reactions from the soccer girls and an objective view. It might interest your readers to find out how SBU handled this situation.

Given my experiences with Southwest Baptist, I would have to question the use of the term objective but I should reserve judgment about a student paper on a highly conservative campus possibly diving into areas that might be negative to the administration or call into question the process. Maybe they’ll surprise me.

By the way, I think SBU did the right thing by firing Coach Wade. He indicated where his priorities were at with the choice he made and it was not with the girls and the school. Add in his comments about his skills at manipulation and if I were a parent, or a player, I would have to question everything I had experienced with him.

Quincy Magoo’s Viewing Party Update

Well, we had a nice group out last night, with two dozen taking advantage of the VIP room and it’s 8 leather chairs and three screens while the dining area and the bar saw another 15-18 folks enjoying the game. I enjoyed the chicken wings during the game (breaded, available in several flavors) and the enchiladas during a late lunch while I watched France vs Argentina leading up to the US vs Mexico game.

I think even Buddy thinks Landon Donovan had a good game and if there are any complaints, it was that there were a couple of players it would have been nice to see before the game ended. How was your watch party?

BTW, that is the Florez family in the middle photo, or at least a portion. Bob Florez, his father Jose (first coach at Kickapoo HS) and eldest grandson Joseph (Parkview HS asst). Thanks for introducing us to the new Q in Springfield Soccer.

Quincy Magoo’s – The Go To Spot Wednesday for US Soccer

OK folks, courtesy of the diligent efforts of Springfield’s first family of soccer, the Florez’s, and a returning member of the community, Kickapoo’s Eric Miller (class of 92) who is now a Manager at Springfield’s newest eatery, Quincy Magoo’s, we now have a new location for Wednesday’s World Cup qualifying match against Mexico.

I stopped by for a late lunch today and took advantage of the lunch special for a cheeseburger with fries and a margarita (Monday’s special) and got out of there for less than $12 with tip included. The burger was good, the fries very tasty with an interesting spicy mayonnaise on the side.

There are TV’s throughout the facility and we’ve been promised audio on one of the large screens, seen bottom right in the gallery above. There’s also a VIP room with eight leather chairs, as well as a game room in the front with pool and arcade games. Smoking and non-smoking sections are available and a complete menu of items ensures your entire party will find something to their liking.

Happy hour ends at 6pm so I recommend arriving early to get an order in before the game starts. I’ll be there and I hope to see 3 dozen or more of you for this, the most important game the US will play outside the World Cup itself. I’ve already chatted with the owner about the crowds we were getting at Coester’s. Let’s show him advertising on my site offers a more direct return than he’ll get advertising with the society/sex downtown magazines that were pitching their print advertising rates while I was there (also seen in the photo bottom right).

Quincy Magoo’s is located in Battlefield Plaza, at 900 E Battlefield. It is located in the center of the Plaza, replacing Fish/Clary’s.

Game time Wednesday is 6:00 pm, USA vs Mexico. See you at Quincy’s!
