Before an enthusiastic and overflow crowd at the Woodruff PE Center, the Emory Athletics Department unveiled the highly anticipated Clyde “Doc” Partin, Sr., Athletic Historical Timeline and also announced the all-time teams for the university’s intercollegiate teams.

The Timeline was conceived by former Emory athletic director and long-time athletic and physical education department employee, the late Clyde “Doc” Partin. The 14-panel exhibit chronicles the evolution and growth of Emory Athletics from its beginnings from nearly 175 years ago to the present. The majority of the information presented in the Timeline came from Partin’s book, “Athletics For All.”

Another highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Emory All-Time Teams. The all-time teams were announced in acknowledgement of the 25th anniversary of the University Athletic Association and will kick off a year-long recognition for those honorees. In addition, a Legends category was developed to account for former athletic standouts who competed prior to Emory joining the UAA. The All-Time Teams were chosen by a selection committee comprised by the Emory Sports Hall of Fame Board, current and past Emory coaches and administrators.

All Whites exit World Cup as heroes

Patrick Carver's Friends at WC

Patrick Carver's Friends at WC

As Springfield slowly discovers the world’s game that we already love, and New York City discovers that we can bring the love at the same level as any city in the country, the memory and the emotion that I hold closest are the friends I have made because of the game. One of them includes Patrick Carver, Parkview 2006 and Emory 2010 where he was a two-time All-American. I met him as a player with my nephew Chris’ club team and as a school foe (Chris is a Glendale Falcon, class of 2007) He also played one year in the New Zealand professional league, courtesy of Mike Seabolt, Missouri State assistant coach who hooked him up with the opportunity that Patrick embraced. I asked him to share with us his thoughts on how New Zealand has embraced their team. Here are his thoughts.

Thank you Landon Donovan. The golden boy’s injury time goal thrust us (USA) above Algeria and England to claim the top spot in our group and a match with Ghana in the round of 16, sparing me a very unhappy afternoon.

Another team that has defied the odds to finish ahead of a perennial soccer power is my adopted home country of New Zealand. Although the All Whites finished third in Group F with three ties and didn’t qualify for the next round, the Kiwis are already being hailed as heroes back home (link below).

All Whites exit World Cup as heroes

New Zealand may not be a big country but it is full of passion when it comes to sports. Soccer has nearly always had to take a back seat to the success of the All Blacks, their national rugby team. Despite this, the soccer culture in this country is great. Most people here are either 1st or 2nd generation transplants from countries in the United Kingdom which means they brought their football heritage with them.

The Kiwis left their last tournament appearance (1982) with 3 losses and -10 goal differential. This time around, the country was guardedly optimistic. 4 amateur players in the squad, a world rank of 78, and the lowest paid coach in the tournament were all factors that had New Zealanders downplaying their chances.

Led by captain Ryan Nelson who played here in the America during his college years for Greensboro College in North Carolina and later at Stanford University; the All Whites played a compact style which earned them ties in each of their three games. I talked to some friends in New Zealand who have characterized the results as ‘glorious’, ‘mint’, and ‘phenomenal’. They are extremely happy to have emerged from international soccer obscurity and finish the tournament with more points than Italy.

It’s not often that a New Zealand sports team is rewarded with international notoriety; most of their fame stems from native filmmaker Peter Jackson’s decision to use the country to film Lord of the Rings. For a country that was really just happy to be there, they have exceeded their own expectations which will provide a source of pride and happiness for years to come.

Upper Hutt City Soccer Welcomes Carver And Seabolt

UpperHuttTime for another update from New Zealand where for the second straight season Springfield is well represented. Here’s how the Chairman of the Upper Hutt City Soccer program describes it in their recent newsletter:

As many of you will know, we have another American import in our ranks this year, Patrick Carver, who has followed in the footsteps of Andy Cooper and Brian Pasierb last year in being a great ambassador for his country, and a great addition on the field for our men’s first team. carverOne of Patricks strengths is his ability to relate to our juniors, and his coaching skills and encouragement have certainly helped the 14th grade team I coach punch above their weight this season. Many of our juniors will get the chance to learn from Patrick in the upcoming school holiday program, where he will be running a number of sessions with our first team captain Andy Le Prue. Andy is a very classy player, and between them they will ensure the holiday program is a great one for the kids to be involved in. If you haven’t registered your kids yet, please contact our junior club captain John Blaikie.

Another exciting initiative is taking place next week with the arrival of Mike Seabolt, our contact in America who has facilitated the player imports that have occurred over the past 2 years. Mike will also be getting involved with our juniors and seniors while he is here, running coaching sessions and scouting for talent, and hopefully this relationship will provide opportunities for some of our kids to secure football scholarships into the USA in the future.

And as Patrick noted in his most recent email – We are doing well, just moved in to 3rd place on the table after a hard fought win against Naenae on Saturday. Came from behind three times to win the game 4-3. I had a goal, played most of the game. We have some tough games coming up but with a little luck, we could definitely win the league and get promoted to the top level of pro soccer in New Zealand.

I’ve converted the latest newsletter into a PDF so that you can get caught up with our two local boys and their efforts at Upper Hutt, just download The Harcourt Herald to view Patrick’s comments on his stay so far as well as Seabolt’s comments which include feedback on the recently concluded Confederations Cup (the good and the bad including some coaching advice for Bradley & Co) and the upcoming MSU season. You should also check out the Upper Hutt website and the September 2008 newsletter that includes some pictures of Andy Cooper and Brian Pasierb along with Pasierb’s bio.

NSCAA 2009 St Louis: All-Americans

NSCAA St Louis 2009: All-AmericansNSCAA St Louis 2009: All-Americans

The largest event of the convention from what I understand is the All-American Luncheon, held the final day full day of the event. Springfield was represented today by Patrick Carver (Emory 2009, Parkview 2005) who was recognized for the second straight year as a 1st Team All-American. He’s pictured on the left above along with his College Coach Sonny Travis and his teammate, Marc Del Marmol, who was a 2nd Team All-American. Coach Sonny Travis was named the NSCAA/ Adidas NCAA Division III South Region Coach of the Year for 2008 as well. Patrick and Marc helped lead the Eagles to one of the most successful seasons in the program’s history in 2008, as the squad claimed its first University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship since the 1998 season, advanced in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time since the 1988 season, and matched a program record with 16 wins during the campaign.

Patrick scored 13 goals this year, with 7 assists for 33 points. He finished his career with 50 goals, 29 assists and 129 total points in 72 games. He started every game as a junior and senior and has future plans in the game of soccer that I’m looking forward to enjoying.

By the way, the second photo is of Lori Chalupny who was on stage to congratulate each of the winners today and this young man, who was recognized as an NCCAA All-American, did what I think many of them would like to have done – he got a photo with St Louis’ National team hero and pride of Nerinx Hall. There are hundreds of stories like these and I got to share in a couple.

I came late to the Hall Saturday afternoon and found a table in the back that had an open seat. Turns out I was sharing it with Coach Rachel Bostick and her two All-Americans, Bri Rodriguez and Vanessa DiBernardo. Waubonsie Valley (Aurora, IL) finished with a 26-0-1 record and extended its unbeaten streak to 58 games in front a record championship-game crowd of 2,588 at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium in the Illinois State Championship game last May. It was their second straight IL title. You can read more, and catch video with Vanessa post-game, in this Chicago Tribune story. There’s a back story as well. How many of you recognized Vanessa’s last name? Her father is Angelo DiBernardo, here’s how he’s described in Sports Ilustrated in 1976

The second part of Indiana’s secret is an amazingly gifted goal scorer (10 so far this season), Angelo DiBernardo, 22, a darkly handsome, elegantly turned-out, shy young man who has road-burning speed, an uncanny knack of being in the right spot and is a deadly shot with either foot (SI, Nov. 15, 1976). If DiBernardo decides to turn pro (although a senior academically, he has a year’s eligibility left), he will probably be the No. 1 pick in the North American Soccer League’s college draft in January.

He’s in the Indiana Soccer Hall of Fame, played for the New York Cosmos for four years and also spent a decade coaching at Waubonsie, including one season for the girls team in 1991-1992. That team went 19-2-3 and would have been about the time Vanessa was born. I know this because I asked how old she was when the World Cup came to Chicago (and the US) and she responded immediately that she was 2. There are pictures of Angelo with his daughter and with former Waubonsie player, and current Creighton All-American Chris Shuler, son of Springfield’s Chris Shuler.

As large an event as the NSCAA can be, it’s a great opportunity to learn, meet and develop your game. If you’re considering soccer as a career, joining the NSCAA and participating in it’s programs and the Convention should be considered a requirement.

21st Patrick Carver’s shot hits the crossbar, rebound cleared
73rd minute, Emory score as freshman Ben Schlang collects a ball knocked down in the box from 7′s cross, slotting it past the goalkeeper (pictured above). The win keeps the Eagles perfect with a 11-0-0 record (2-0-0 UAA), while the Bears fell to 8-3-0 (1-1-0 UAA). BTW, that’s Carver (Parkview 2005) wearing the Captain’s armband and jersey #16 watching the goal being scored. Patrick has 8 goals and 4 assists in 11 games this year, leading the Eagles.

Springfield SC U23′s Host NWA Lightning Tonight

UPDATE – the Springfield SC U23′s won the inaugural Ozarks Challenge Cup Wednesday night on aggregate goals 6-1.

The team got a pair of late goals, in the 75th and 79th minute, to win the home leg of the series 2-0. The first goal came as the team slowly wore down their opponent and maintained possession in the offensive end. Winning a 1v1 battle on the far left side of the box allowed x to slot a ball to Justin Alford (MSU/Poplar Bluff) in the six yard box where he confidently buried a one-touch ball into the roof of the net. The second goal came on a corner kick by John Duncan (WashU/Joplin) with Heath Melugin (MSU/Kickapoo) rising above the defense to nod it home.

Springfield Soccer Club The game is the final leg of a home-and-away series initiated this year between the two clubs, with the winner earning the Ozarks Challenge Cup hardware.

Game time is 7:05 pm at Cooper Soccer Complex, Field 1.

As a few folks have pointed out to me, it could be the last opportunity to see All-American Patrick Carver (Parkview 2005) play in Springfield prior to the end of his collegiate career at Emory University. Emory will visit Washington University on October 12th when he’ll face off against high school teammate Joshua Florez (and John Duncan, Joplin and Bryson Tombridge, Kickapoo) but that will require a Sunday drive.

The boys are unbeaten in their 7 games this season and really gelling. It will be an enjoyable game. Come out and join us and support the local boys!

Springfield Soccer Club U23 Team Opens Play Saturday

Springfield Soccer ClubThe Springfield Soccer Club has initiated their Under 23 Men’s Program, which will open their season with a pair of games in St Louis this weekend and one in Bentonville on Sunday. For the 2008 season the team will play six away matches and three home matches at the Lake Country Soccer Complex.

The objective of the program is to provide a professional soccer environment for college age players. The program will offer many highlights for the college player; later start date so players can relax after the college spring semester is over, 6-8 matches so players have an appropriate level of training-match ratio. Additionally, players will participate in a 7 v 7 League which will allow for weekly opportunities to play during the summer.

“Having been a former coach in the PDL with the Chicago Fire Reserves (currently Chicago Fire Premier), I look forward to this program starting. We look forward to providing a professional environment, where college players can develop their game during the summer months. Players will also be taken care of like professionals, both when we travel and train.” said Jeremy Alumbaugh Director of Soccer Operations for Springfield Soccer Club.

Highlights of the match schedule will see the team traveling to Chicago for a weekend series of three games.

“After visiting with college coaches, many of them feel that too many of the current summer soccer programs place too much emphasis on games and not enough on training. We are going to try and provide a professional training environment with enough games to keep players sharp.” said Alumbaugh.

The team is made up from both local outstanding college players and significant Springfield Soccer Club Alumni, including 2007 NSCAA All-America Patrick Carver from Emory University as well as Alex Palmer, Danny Collins, Adam Peterson, Taylor Stacy and Stephen Conner from Drury; Alex Riggs, Kyle Windmueller, Brian Collins, Justin Alford and Nick Dryden from MSU; Ross Chaffin (Greenwood) from Denver University; John Duncan (Joplin) from Washington University; Nate Evans (Cassville) and Jesse Clevenger (College Heights) from MSSU; Heath Melugin (Kickapoo/MSU), Zack Hay (Kickapoo/ M S&T), TJ Martin (Webb City/Rogers State) and Michael Handley (Webb City/Ashford) as well as Springfield SC

July 12 @ Metro United Collinsville, IL (CISA 11am, Illinois Fusion 3pm)
July 13 @ NWA Lightning Bentonville, AR
July 19 @ Schwaben FC 23 Chicago, IL (two games)
July 20 @ Galaxy SC Naperville, IL
July 23 HOME vs. NWA Lightning Springfield, MO

I’m planning on attending the game in Bentonville on Sunday against the Northwest Arkansas Lightning so there will be pictures to follow. Watch this site for updates on the home games.

Kaitlin Bramel To Play Soccer And Basketball at Fontbonne

Here’s a story we don’t hear often enough in this age of increasing specialization. Rolla High School senior, Kaitlin Bramel, just signed with Fontbonne University in St. Louis to play soccer AND basketball beginning in the Fall of 2008.

Kaitlin has been a force in both sports all four years and unlike her close friend Katie Pritchard, she wanted to continue playing both sports in college. I’m excited to hear she found an opportunity. I’m crossing my fingers there will be a game the weekend I visit St Louis to catch Emory take on Washington University when former high school teammates Patrick Carver and Josh Florez face off one last time. Fontbonne is just down the street.

Patrick Carver Represents At NSCAA

Carver with Reyna & Lilly at NSCAA One more report to share with you from the NSCAA Annual Convention in Baltimore last week. Patrick Carver (Parkview 2005, Emory 2009) was on hand to receive his 1st Team All-America award.

Mom & Dad were kind enough to share a photo with this site of Patrick receiving his award from National Team players & captains, Claudio Reyna and Kristine Lilly.

Well done Patrick!

2007 – Ole’s Top 10

While we contemplate the News-Leaders failure to name an All-Ozarks squad for the Boys Fall season, I’ll soldier on for the soccer community and offer my thoughts on the Top 10 achievements for 2007. As always, my goal is to recognize individual, team or groups reaching new heights, either on the pitch or within a community.

1. Jeff Rogers earns his 500th win with the Glendale Falcon’s. Quite a career with no end in sight.
2. Springfield SC U16′s win State Championship, reach the semi-finals of the Region II Tournament and qualify for Disney & the Dallas Cup. The local boys get to the next level.
3. Drury Lady Panther’s win the GLVC Tournament, earning an NCAA Bid and reaching the Final 16. The defense is led by 2nd Team All-American Jesse Sanderson, a freshman from Jefferson City. Coach Bilbao & Swan set a high standard.
4. Patrick Carver, Emory University Eagles, earns 1st Team All-American status. Parkview Vikings 2005 & Springfield SC alum, also a Demize 2007 player.
5. Nikki Llewellyn, Missouri Southern Lions, sets school records and is the most valuable college field player in the region this year. Earns 3rd Team All-Region honors.
6. Heath Melugin, Kickapoo Chiefs, earns All-Midwest recognition and is the most valuable high school player in the region this year. while leading the Chiefs to the State Final 4. He’ll play for the Missouri State Bears this Fall.
7. Brian Fishback, University of Indianapolis Greyhounds, earns 2nd Team All-Region in the Great Lakes Region. Parkview Vikings 2005 & Springfield SC alum, also a Demize 2007 player.
8. Kickapoo Chiefs boys earn 3rd Place in the Class 3 State tournament.
9. Crocker Lions and Cassville Wildcats earn 4th place in the Class 1 and Class 2 State Tournament respectively.
10. PDL Soccer returns to Springfield after a one-year layoff. The Springfield Demize feature local players with Omar Schoucair (Missouri State University) earning league recognition.

This was a difficult list to prepare as soccer, and the achievement levels, all increase. Some notable events that didn’t make the list include the Sister Cities Program, who have come back the past two years to defeat our Mexican neighbors in the annual exchange. Catholic High School added boys soccer and they made themselves known early and often in their inaugural year, including seeing Matt Libel named to the All-State team. Tom Davidson moved to Ozark HS where he’ll earn his 500th win early this Spring. The Rolla Bulldogs built a beautiful Soccer specific field, hosted the Quarterfinals and prepare to see Mike Howard earn his 500th win as well. UPDATE – as Mr Cavner noted, I missed the fact that Greenwood added Girls soccer this season and like their rivals on the South side, the started strong and made an immediate impact as well!

The SBU Bearcats went from a preseason #5 pick to reaching the inaugural MIAA Tournament final, losing 0-1 on an 87th minute goal.

Jack Jewsbury continued his strong play with the KC Wizards, helping them reach the Playoffs for the first time in three years. Matt Picken’s achieved the same as the goalkeeper for the Chicago and is now rumored as a potential European transfer? The KC Wizards almost have a stadium plan and St Louis almost has an MLS team which bodes well for 2008 Top 10 list material.

What have I missed?

You can check out the 2006 list for comparison if you like. And if you need to get the blood flowing to help with your New Year’s workout resolution, check out the News-Leaders 2007 list. Football coaches quitting and basketball teams winning local tournaments early in the season in the Top 5 and the only soccer link is Davidson changing jobs? Kickapoo’s 3rd place finish as an afterthought? Dang, I’m ready for an attack ad, it is the political season isn’t it!
