Southwest Baptist Visits Drury Panthers Saturday

Kelsy Long, Drury Panthers (2011)

Kelsey Long, Drury Panthers (2011)

This is a game I always look forward to and with the large recruiting class of local players that Head Coach Rob Podeyn has brought into the Bearcats roster, there’s an even stronger pull. Still an exhibition game for both teams, its a nice measurement for the Bearcats (MIAA) and Panthers (GLVC) as they complete preparations for their D2 seasons.

Game time is 6:00 pm Saturday at Harrison Stadium.

The Bearcats recruits for 2010 from the region include Paige Hemphill (Ozark), Rachel Haden (Ozark), Molly Marcotte (Republic), Amy Coffey (Rogersville), Erin Boschen (Hillcrest), Megan Melguin (Kickapoo) and Chelsea VanHook (Camdenton).

Southwest Baptist opens their season on September 2nd when the Quincy Hawks visit. Quincy is ranked #2 in the GLVC while Drury is ranked #6 which means the results of tonights game and next weeks game will offer an early assessment of the quality of the GLVC coaches prognostication skills.

The Panthers hit the road for three games next week, at Ashland, Tiffin and Lewis over the Labor Day holiday weekend. They visit Quincy on September 10th.

She’s Just Fundamental To Our Team

Ozark Tigers Class of 2010, Girls Soccer

Ozark Tigers Class of 2010, Girls Soccer

District Soccer has begun and as ABC Wide World of Sports intoned – the thrill of victory… and the agony of defeat… the human drama of athletic competition.

The playoff sports calendar opened on Saturday with a significant example, as the senior-laden Ozark Tiger’s (Class of 2010 pictured from senior night, when they beat the Eagle’s in the COC Title game) were knocked out by their largest rival in dramatic fashion. I took some time post-game to chat with Brittany Kirkpatrick and Lauren Moats, two players who were responsible for the game winner. I asked them about their opponents, in particular about the role that Paige Hemphill had in keeping Nixa from the winner’s column.

Hemphill has had no shortage of media coverage during her high school career, all well-deserved. I think it’s appropriate to also consider her teammates that were part of the significant success the team achieved, including their first Class 3 District title in 2008 as well as capturing the first two Central Ozark Conference large school titles the past two years. Here’s an article that talks to the issue of the unrecognized.

WisconsinSoccer featured Dartmouth Coach Angie Hind talking about one of her players who doesn’t have the stats:

“When you look at the stats, you look at the goals and the assists, she’s certainly not going to blow you away by any manner or means. But she is just the kid that just makes it happen,” Hind said of Sack, who was an All-Ivy League selection last season after earning honorable mention status the previous two years.

“She’s the kid that enables us to get the ball and keep the ball, or she plays the pass before the assist, or she’s the kid that breaks up things … She’s just fundamental to our team. I just feel there’s so many midfield players that don’t get the recognition because they don’t score goals and they don’t make assists regularly, and it’s an absolute shame. I know our program wouldn’t be what it is without her.”

As we go deeper into the playoffs, who is it on your team that doesn’t have the statistics but plays a significant role? What would you say to her?

From the article Statistics don’t tell the whole story of Dartmouth’s Myra Sack by Eric Anderson October 19, 2009 in Women’s Soccer. By the way, you can follow Wisconsin Soccer on Twitter as well.

Ozark Tigers – 2 (PK’s)
Nixa Eagles – 1
The Tiger’s capture the COC Large School title with their win via PK’s tonight at home. An early goal by senior Megan Gunnels, who also scored the decisive penalty kick ((#16, after being mobbed) provided a memory on Senior Night that may well match her experience as a sophomore when the Tiger’s beat Kickapoo for the District title.

Saturday Soccer Report

Paige Hemphill, Ozark 2010, PK save at Blue Springs S

By M Gunnells - Paige Hemphill PK save at Blue Springs S

Blue Springs South – 0
Ozark Tigers – 1 (PK’s)
With a pair of saves in the PK round, goalie Paige Hemphill helped the Tiger’s get the win in KC on Saturday.

From Jags struggle scoring in shootout loss

The host Blue Springs South girls soccer team dominated. But in the end, it was Ozark prevailing 1-0 after two scoreless 10-minute overtimes and a shootout Saturday. The Jaguars (1-1), in a game delayed 30 minutes because of lightning, outshot Ozark 16-3 and led 5-1 in corner kicks. But in the shootout, Ozark converted on four attempts and South only once.

Park Hill South – 5
Kickapoo Chiefs – 1
Goals were scored by Kellogg (2), Hanlon, Claassen and Weatherly for Park Hill. Megan Melugin scored for Kickapoo.

Christian County High School Girls Soccer

Nixa Lady EaglesA beautiful day and time for a road trip to check out the Christian County squads and how the first week is treating them. First stop Nixa where Coach Evan Palmer was demonstrating some of the moves that held him in good stead as a Missouri State Bear. The Lady Eagles open 2010 coming off of their best season ever in 2009. Nixa won 16 games, blowing past the previous record of 12, scoring 80 goals while giving up only 30, both records as well. The team won its first tournament taking first in the Christian County Tournament while the JV squad was also setting records at 15-3.

Hannah Barber, a sparkplug and All-Star in 2009, is the most significant loss. The team brings back a solid core, starting in the back with junior keeper Kristin Miller, Team MVP in 2009, fronted by senior Maddie Chandler who was Defensive MVP. Jo Pavlowsky and Ashlyn Robillard join Chandler as the senior leaders for this still young squad that includes Regional 1st teamers Rachel Murphy, a sophomore forward and Kelsey Haist, a junior midfielder. Add in Sophomore Abby Turnbull at sweeper and junior front runner Kelsey Bartell and the Eagles are prepared to challenge again this year. The Eagles add sophomore transfer Lauren Moats, who won a Kentucky State Cup with Javanon before moving here when dad Kyle accepted the Missouri State AD job, and freshman Brittany Kirkpatrick to this developing squad. The final game of the season came in the District semi-finals with a tough loss to Glendale. While they won’t surprise anyone this year, I suspect their goals will be higher and they’ll have a solid opportunity to achieve them.

Ozark Lady TigersBefitting the weather and a 4th day of practice, the Tigers were the most active squad I’ve seen at this early stage. Working small spaces and transition, this looks like a team on a mission. When last seen, the girls were being shut out by a Chiefs team in the District semi-final that the Tigers had hammered 3-0 two games prior. With seven returning seniors, five of whom will likely be playing college soccer next Fall, the focus is understandable.

Starting with 1st Team All-State sr. goalkeeper Paige Hemphill (SBU Bearcats), sr. Megan Jenisch and jr. Jayme Braun on defense, sr. Megan Stodden and sr. Rachel Haden (SBU Bearcats) in the midfield and sr. Alicia Collard and sr. Megan Gunnels at forward, the Tigers are prepared to go toe-to-toe with with any team in the area. The team has added one transfer, Shannon Lacker, from Ft Zumwalt South in St Louis. There are 9 underclassmen who have another year of experience and the largest senior class I think we’ll find in the region. Will this be their year?

Southwest Baptist Bearcats Sign Haden & Hemphill from Ozark, Marcotte from Republic

From the SBU website:
Rob Podeyn, Southwest Baptist University soccer coach, has signed nine recruits.

The recruits include Rachel Haden of Ozark, Paige Hemphill of Ozark, Molly Marcotte of Republic, Brenna Lacillade of Warrensburg, Ashley Creason of Lee’s Summit, Brittney Smith of Overland Park, Kan., Emily Claudell of Overland Park, Kan., Jen French of Lenexa, Kan., and Marene Gomez of South Jordan, Utah.

RachelHaden_Mamba

RachelHaden_Mamba (in black)

Rachel Haden (Ozark, Missouri) – Haden is a strong and physical defensive midfield player from the Springfield area. Standing at 5’6”, Rachel is a solid possession player who is not afraid to challenge for the ball. “Rachel was actually the first player I saw and began recruiting when I came to SBU. She plays with a lot of heart and desire, and has that little bit of attitude you want from players in the midfield. I was impressed with her the first time I saw her play,” said coach Podeyn. “Rachel has played three years of varsity soccer at Ozark High School and has played club soccer for the Mambas under coach Brian Russell the last nine years. As a starter the last three years in high school, Rachel has been selected to all-conference, all-district, and all-region teams. “Southwest Baptist University had exactly what I was looking for. I liked the physical therapy program, I was impressed with the soccer program, and I like the academic reputation SBU has,” said Haden.

Paige Hemphill, Ozark

Paige Hemphill, Ozark

Paige Hemphill (Ozark, Missouri) – Hemphill is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the state of Missouri. She has been a three-year starter on her varsity soccer team at Ozark High School, and has been selected to the all-state team the last two years. “Being a former goalkeeper I am very particular about how my goalkeepers train and how they are developed. Paige impressed me with her ability to command the area and control the box. She is an excellent communicator and leader in the back. She is a strong technical goalkeeper who is very capable of making the big saves,” said Podeyn. “I chose to attend college at SBU because it is known for its nursing program through the SBU/St. John’s School of Nursing, and nursing is the career path which I hope to pursue,” said Hemphill. “I like the fact that SBU is a private college and the class sizes are smaller. It also has a great campus, and I feel safe being there. I chose SBU to continue my athletic career because I enjoyed the coach and the level of play the team brings to the sport. I felt the team and coach was a good fit for me as a player and student. I like the vision coach Podeyn has for his team at SBU,” Hemphill added.

Molly Marcotte, Mamba

Molly Marcotte, Mamba (in black)

Molly Marcotte (Republic, Missouri) – Marcotte is a determined and dedicated player with good size and strong technique. At 5’8”, Molly is strong in the air, but also very good at maintaining possession and reading the game. “Molly gives us another defender who is smart, aggressive, physical, and able to challenge the ball in the air. She fits well with our system and how we want to play,” said Podeyn. Molly attends Republic High School where they have yet to begin a girls soccer program; her development has been through year-round club soccer. Her current team, the Mambas, is coached by Brian Russell. He has been instrumental of several players in the Springfield area and has helped to produce many college bound girls soccer players. Molly has become a player who through her determination and hard work has developed into one of the best defenders in the Springfield area. “SBU is a superb university. It offers what I want academically and the soccer program is up and coming. It is also semi-close to home which I like,” said Marcotte.

“I’m excited about these additions,” Podeyn said. “After our season of 7-9-3 last year, I felt like we needed to upgrade and add depth to every aspect of our game. And I think we’ve done that with this recruiting class.”

The Bearcats will open the 2010 preseason with a trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, next fall. They will open the 2010 season at home against Quincy University Thursday, Sept. 2.
