Is Your Team Competing In State Cup or the Presidents Cup?

Presidents Cup LogoThe two state-wide competitions have registration deadlines quickly approaching. Last year one Girls team (Missouri Elite FC U14 Girls) competed along with two Boys programs – Springfield SC and Total Demize in State Cup. Will your team compete?

The alternate choice is the President’s Cup which offers a lower tier of competition but the result is still an opportunity to move on to Regional competition and even a National tournament. Due to low registration numbers there have been teams that moved directly to Regional tournaments and therefor fun trips to Midwest tournaments during the summer. If you are looking for a nice opportunity, consider the President’s Cup. The State qualifying will be in Springfield in late May if needed.

Fair Grove Spring Classic Soccer Tournament Set For April 8-10

Fair Grove Spring ClassicThe Fair Grove Soccer Academy is pleased to announce we will be hosting the 2nd Annual Fair Grove Spring Classic on April 8-10 in Fair Grove, Mo.

The tournament is geared toward intermediate level teams, and it is fully sanctioned by Soccer Association for Youth and open to all teams registered under the USSF umbrella (MYSA, SAY, etc.).

Last year’s tournament was a huge success, with Harrison (Ark.) Storm winning the lone U13/U14 Boys division. This year we hope to expand the field to include a U11/U12 Boys division (8v8) and a U13/U14 Girls Division (11v11)

As expected with any tournament, the Spring Classic will feature USSF certified referee crews, awards for the winning teams, and at $200 for U11/U12 teams and $250 for U13/U14 teams, it will cost your organization nearly half as much as similar tournaments!

Registration is due by Sunday, March 20 and spaces are limited. To download an application and see the rules of play for the tournament, please visit www.fairgrovesoccer.com/wp/spring-classic

If you have any questions, please contact tournament director, Logan Hoffman, at 303-921-1726 or by e-mail at lhoffman@fairgrovesoccer.com.

Fair Grove Soccer Academy Spring 2011 Registration Now Open

Fair Grove Soccer AcademyFAIR GROVE, MO – The Fair Grove Soccer Academy is pleased to announce that registration for their 2011 Spring Recreational Soccer Academy is now open.

Registration for the spring league, which is open to all girls and boys age 3-18, will run through Sunday, March 6, with practices and games starting the week of March 20 and running through May 7. All practices and games will take place in Fair Grove District Park.

Registration forms can be picked up at Fair Grove City Hall, or registration can be completed online at www.fairgrovesoccer.com. The league costs $25 to register, and all players are guaranteed 6 games, 6 practices with the FGSA coaching staff, and end-ofseason awards. Scholarships are available to those who qualify.

This spring also marks the Fair Grove Soccer Academy’s fifth year of operation, and the club is excited to celebrate the growth it has seen. Established in 2007 as a project of the Fair Grove Park Board, The FGSA takes a unique approach to teaching the game by bringing in coaches and players from Drury University to coach the players in an academy setting where they are exposed to the game’s core fundamentals in a highly personalized setting. What started as 65 kids playing soccer in a hay field in 2007 has now become the only club serving Northern Green County and all of Dallas County to be recognized by the Missouri Youth Soccer Association (MYSA), with over 140 kids playing in the recreational academy and another 30 playing for the FGSA’s competitive travel teams.

Along the way a lot of memories have been made. 2008 saw the renovation of Fair Grove District Park and the construction of the first fullsized soccer ever to be built in the town. 2009, the FGSA U11 Boys Premier become the club’s first competitive team, and in the U14 boys were the first team to ever represent Fair Grove Middle School in the Lake Country Middle School League. The clubs motto for 2011: Continue to provide the best environment for our players to learn and succeed.

Coaching License Clinic Available At Lake Country Soccer

Coaching Clinic, 2005

Coaching Clinic, 2005

Lake Country Soccer, in conjunction with Missouri Youth Soccer Association, is providing a USSF D License course in early February.

UPDATE – the class has been canceled due to lack of registration

The USSF ‘D’ Certificate

This course is geared for those who coach U13 and up players. The purpose is to further develop the player’s technical abilities and their application to the game. Increase the understanding of Principles of Play and how they are applied in the game. Expand the coaches understanding of 11 a side soccer and the importance of developing a team system that is based on the players abilities. Course duration is 36 hours, this is a tested course in which candidates will either receive a National ‘D’ or State ‘D’ certificate.

Course: 2011 ‘D’ License Course
Date: February 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th, 2011
Time: 8:00am till 4:00pm, on all days.
Location: Springfield Soccer Club Training Facility, 3105 E Elm, Springfield, Mo 65802
Fees: $200.00

Note that the course will be held over two (2) consecutive weekends.

Click here and scroll down to the appropriate clinic to register for this class.

There are several items available for Coaches to read prior to attending the course, including Best Practices for Coaching Soccer in the US, a worthwhile addition to any Coaches library.

MYSA Coaches Code of Conduct

A soccer game should be friendly and unifying – a spirited social and athletic occasion for players, coaches, referees and spectators. To clarify expectations of coach conduct, we jointly expect all coaches to conform to this code of conduct.

* Before, during and after the game, be an example of dignity, patience and positive spirit.
* Before a game, introduce yourself to the opposing coach and to the referee.
* During the game, you are responsible for the sportsmanship of your players. If one of your players is disrespectful, irresponsible or overly aggressive, take the player out of the game at least long enough for him/her to calm down.
* During the game, you are also responsible for the conduct of the parents of your players. It is imperative to explain acceptable player and parent behavior in a preseason meeting.
* Encourage them to applaud and cheer for good plays by either team. Discourage them and you may need to be forceful and direct from yelling at players and the referee.
* During the game, you are also responsible for the conduct of spectators rooting for your team.
* During the game, do not address the referee at all. If you have a small issue, discuss it with the referee calmly and patiently after the game.
* If you have a major complaint, or if you think the referee was unfair, biased, unfit or incompetent, report your opinion to your league. Your reactions will be taken seriously if they are presented objectively and formally.
* After the game, thank the referee and ask your players to do the same.

We stress two points:

Referees – especially young and inexperienced ones – are like your players and yourself, in that they need time to develop. You can play an important role in helping them to improve by letting them concentrate on the game. You can help by encouraging them, by accepting their inevitable, occasional mistakes and by offering constructive post-game comments. On the other hand, you could discourage and demoralize the referees by criticizing their decisions, by verbally abusing them and inciting-or even accepting-your own players’ overly aggressive behavior.

Your example is powerful, for better or worse. If you insist on fair play, if you concentrate on your players’ enjoyment of the game and their overall, long term development, and if you support the referee, your players and their parents will notice. If you encourage (or allow) your players to play outside the rules, if you’re overly concerned about results, and if you criticize the referee harshly, your players and their parents will also notice.

Think about what you’re doing during a game! Uphold the Spirit of the Game! If you follow the expectations described above, the spirit of the game will be alive and well in Missouri and will grow, along with the enjoyment of all.

MYSA High School Tryout Update

Missouri Youth Soccer Association logoI’ve received several tryout notices recently that I haven’t posted. Here’s why:

For the 2010-2011 season, tryouts actually were opened state-wide on June 15th, 2010. I know that most competitive HS boys tryouts have already taken place. Clubs can have additional tryouts throughout the year as long as they are not violating the MYSA recruiting policies and MSHAA participation policies. Supplemental HS Boys tryouts cannot be held until after the HS boys season ends.

Thanks,

Jacob Griesenauer | Executive Director
Missouri Youth Soccer Association

jake@mysa.org | www.mysa.org

The final day of the High School Boys season is Saturday November 20th when the Finals are held in St Louis. However, apparently once a team finishes MSHSAA play (JV players or teams that are eliminated during District playoffs) the boys may then begin the tryout process.

I am happy to post any and all Tryout notices. Send them to Ole at SGFsoccer.com.

Missouri Youth Soccer Association F Level Coaching Clinic – Tuesday August 17th

F License Coaching Class at Lake Country Soccer, 2005

F License Coaching Class at Lake Country Soccer, 2005

Lake Country soccer will host its fall Missouri Youth Soccer “F” level coaching certification clinic on Tuesday, August 17th from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. This clinic covers the most basic fundamentals of coaching soccer for our youngest participants. It is an entertaining and interactive clinic instructed by Denny Vaninger, who serves as the Director of Coaching for Missouri Youth Soccer.

The clinic registration fee is paid for by Lake Country Soccer for any coach working with a team that plays in a Lake Country Soccer youth league. Non-Lake Country Soccer coaches are invited to attend also, but must pay the $35 clinic registration fee. Every coach working with a team playing in a Lake Country Soccer league is required to have, at minimum, an “F” level coaching certificate.

All attendees should register for the clinic at www.mysa.org . Registering for the course also requires the submission of information for conducting a background check. For more information, please contact Lake Country Soccer or the Missouri Youth Soccer Association.

Missouri 1993 ODP Boys Team Competes Against Springfield SC

MO 1993 ODP Boys soccer pool

MO 1993 ODP Boys soccer pool

The weather had no impact today on the young men who gathered at Plaster Stadium on the Missouri State campus to play a pair of friendlies. Missouri 1993 ODP Coach John Rosslein, and his assistant/son Jason, gathered a large group of players born in 1993 who are working to develop their game and move onto college opportunities.

Working with Springfield SC, there were two games played today. The first game featured players who have registered to be part of the ODP program but had not yet been evaluated. Their game was played against the U17 Boys team from Springfield SC. The second game featured boys who have been part of the ODP program in the past and they played against a team of U18 and older boys from SSC. These are the boys featured in the photo and include three regional players – Luke Strauss (Catholic/Springfield SC), Jackson Patillo (Willard/Springfield SC) and Taylor Arens (Catholic/Springfield SC).

Following the games, I asked Coach Rosslein to give me some feedback on the Olympic Development Program (ODP) in Missouri. Summarizing his comments in the video below, the ODP program offers boys from Missouri an alternative to the time and expense of the USSF Academy Program, which is also limited to Kansas City and St Louis, while exposing them to additional competitive opportunities and college programs. Today’s event was scouted by both Michael Seabolt from Missouri State and Ryan Swan from Drury University and Coach Rosselein emphasized his efforts to partner with the Club coaches he draws his team from AND the college coaches in the region that have an interest in players capable of playing at this level. A final note – the Pool is approximately 50 players who are invited to participate based upon availability and interest, while the final roster of 18 with 6 alternates is chosen in June following State Cup. These players advance to represent the state in the Region II ODP tournament and potentially represent the region. An example of that are when Austin Hart (Glendale/Springfield SC) and Reid Harbach (Catholic/Springfield SC) played for Region II at the Super Regionals in December.

I’m going to try and get out to the two late games so look for photos. An observation – of these six teams, only one was ranked/seeded coming into the tournament. What do you think, could that be an indication that there is a reason we play the games, and the MYSA policies that have decreased participation by more than 1/2 is a failure?
