Springfield SC Win Opening Match

Springfield SC 94/95 at Region 2 Championships

Springfield SC 94/95 at Region 2 Championships by JT Adams

Springfield SC - 2
Waukesha Pumas (WI) – 0
A pair of goals in the first half held up for the win in their first Regional game. Goals were scored by Jakob Neidig (Ozark) from Dallas Moses (Catholic) free kick and by Evan Craig (Catholic) from Mitch Moncada’s (Catholic) assist.

The boys will play against Galaxy (IL) on Sunday. Galaxy is the 12th ranked team in Region 2 and they defeated the #5 ranked Everest Black (OH) squad 1-0 this morning. SSC faced the Galaxy May 7th in Muscatine IA. The Galaxy won that game 2-1 enroute to a 1st finish in the Midwest Regional League Premier Blue Division with a 6-1-0 record. Springfield SC finished 3-3-1, finishing 4th. Galaxy’s one loss was to Vardar (MI) in their opening match April 8th. SSC defeated Vardar 2-0 two weeks later at a game in Rockford.

Looking at scenarios (is it ever too early?) would indicate that a tie Sunday and a win over Galaxy could put the boys through to the semifinals. Goal differential would be the key then, a dangerous place but a better alternative then a loss but the same scenario holds true for the Galaxy, a Chicago-area squad that made it to Regionals as a wildcard choice following their 3rd place finish in the MRL.

U17 Girls St. Louis Scott Gallagher – 4
Lexington FC 94 Premier (KY) – 0
Molly Brewer and her teammates had a strong opening game. They face off against the MN Thunder squad tomorrow. The Thunder won 1-0 over Cincinnati United (also known as CUSA).

Springfield SC 94/95 Competing At Region 2 Tourney

Springfield SC 94/95 - Missouri State Champions 2011The Springfield SC 94/95 Boys, fresh from their State Championship at the Missouri Cup last Thursday, are enroute to Appleton WI today to compete in the Region 2 Tourney. Part of the USYSA National Championship series, their State title sends them to this regional round with the regional age group winners then advancing to the National Championships in Phoenix next month.

The second team in Springfield Soccer Club to win a State Championship (the 90/91 age group won as 16 and 17 year olds in 2007 and 2008), they will be exposed to the Regional tournament for the first time. The tournament runs June 24-29 and like Cup will include a Group stage followed by knockout rounds.

I stopped by the final practice Thursday prior to their departures and got a few shots (see below) and chatted briefly with Josh McCutcheon (Kickapoo) and Evan Garrad (Glendale), the team captains:

Tournament Schedule:
Sat Jun 25 - 10:00 AM – SC Waukesha Pumas (WI) vs Springfield SC (MO)
Sun Jun 26 – 4:00 PM – Springfield SC (MO) – IL Galaxy (MRL2)
Mon Jun 27 – 8:00 AM – Everest SC Black (OH-N) – Springfield SC (MO)
Tue Jun 28 – 10:00 AM - [TBD] 1 of Pool B vs [TBD] 1 of Pool D
Wed Jun 29 – 8:30 AM - [TBD] Winner of Semifinals 1 vs [TBD] Winner of Semifinals 2

The team is part of Group D and the draw has some good news and some bad news. The good news is the opening match is against a team much like SSC, a first time competitor that comes from a program building new traditions in a state where FC Milwaukee is the dominant program. Waukesha (Wah-ka-shaw) is a western suburb of Milwaukee and where the highway turns North to Appleton. The other portion of the good news is the top-ranked team in the pool is Everest SC Black, ranked 5th in Region 2, but a team that SSC won’t have to face until they’ve played two prior games. That gives them the opportunity to become familiar with the environment, gain confidence and have current scouting reports on what will be the most difficult game of the tournament.

To get out of the group generally requires avoiding a loss and the first game is the most important. A loss in the first game is the most difficult of hurdles and avoiding Everest in that first game was the first piece of good fortune the boys will need. As the interview above notes, there is a quiet confidence and this is a good team with pace, a strong defensive will and enough inventiveness to be dangerous on this larger stage.

Coached by Eric Sorlie and Michael Seabolt from Missouri State (pictured in the white hat), I hope to have regular updates on their results.

There are several other local players competing this weekend as well. Emily Cline (Drury/Glendale) and Shelby Hatz (Drury/Catholic) are playing for St Louis Scott Gallagher at the U18 age bracket while Molly Brewer (Glendale) is playing for SLSG at the U17 age bracket.

ESPNrise.com did a preview of the Girls bracket that includes the KCFC Alliance squad that includes six players from the State Champion Liberty Jays. Regional Champs at U13 and U15, this is likely the last time these girls will play together and like the State tournament, their goal is to win the trophy.

Cooper, Springfield SC 96/97

UPDATE3 – schedules have been changed significantly. I’ve tried to get them all updated below.
UPDATE2 – I’ve added a press release from Springfield SC with additional background on their teams. Springfield SC press release – 2011 State Cup
UPDATE – All games Tuesday canceled due to rain and field conditions. Moved to same time Wednesday.

Emily Cline (Glendale) and Shelby Hatz (Catholic) are members of the U18 SLSG Navy squad that will play in the Final on Tuesday Wednesday. In addition, a pair of finals in U17 Girls and U19 Boys that each feature individual Springfield players (Molly Brewer and Skyler Russell) while Springfield SC has four teams (14, 15, 17, 18) in the Quarterfinals and one in a semifinal (16). Columbia Pride U18′s also reached the Quarterfinals. Schedules and updates below.

PHOTOS will be available later tonight and tomorrow for U15 Boys, U18 Boys and U19 Boys

Springfield SC 95-96 vs Lou Fusz Poupard, U15 Missouri State Cup 2011

Springfield SC 95-96

U15 Boys Quarterfinals
Springfield SC 95/96 – 2
Lou Fusz Poupard – 1
After a scoreless first half, the boys came out with some better organization and put pressure on Lou Fusz from the start. They finally broke through in the 52nd minute when Blake Weber’s shot rolled into an open net as the goalkeeper slipped coming out to it when it spun back towards the net (video below). Unfortunately some lackadaisical defending 8 min later allowed Lou Fusz to tie the score when a loose ball in the box was buried from 8 yards.

PHOTO GALLERY

The game-winner came in stoppage time when following a cross, the ball was pushed back out to the left and the cross back in was headed by up and over the goalkeeper, falling just under the crossbar. Three minutes of defending later and the boys are now headed to the semifinals against Lou Fusz Geerling at 9am Thursday.

U16 Boys Semifinals
Springfield SC 94/95 – 1
Doran Hundelt – 0
The team got the game winner when Turner Adams scored from Mitch Moncada’s cross. It sends them through to the Finals where they will play Raytown BGFC who defeated SLSG Premier 4-3 in overtime. As one parent noted, the Final will feature two non-St Louis teams tomorrow! Game time is 9 am.

U19 Boys Final
Scott Gallagher – 4
KC Futura – 0
Played on the artificial surface at the Gallagher Complex, the home squad overran the visitors from KC who brought 12 players to STL this weekend. Adnan Gabeljic, the SLU sophomore, scored the first three, getting his 1st in the 30th min from close range. A cross from the left by Logan North (brother Mason graduated from Drury this year) was collected, a challenge shrugged off and a goal. In the second half, Matt Hutchinson’s (Drury 2014) run down the left allowed him to turn the corner. His initial square ball went through the box where it was collected by Zach Walters. The rebound of his shot fell to Adnan on the edge of the six-yard box and he poked it in. The third goal came from a breakaway as the Kings pushed forward. After that it was time for me to head to the SSC U18 match.

U18 Boys Quarterfinals
Springfield SC – 1
Scott Gallagher Premier – 2
The defending champions moved on today after coming from behind. SSC opened the scoring in the 42nd when Jordan Houseman (Parkview) got to a ball in the box sent through by Parker Maher from the left. Caught flat-footed, Houseman tipped it past the keeper and just inside the upright.

The second half belonged to Gallagher when 12 minutes in, an own goal on a set piece sent into the box allowed them to tie the score. SSC didn’t show the same verve they had in the first in taking the game to Gallagher. A slide tackle in the box led to a penalty kick in the 69th that was converted for the ultimate game-winner. Gallagher goes on to face Lou Fusz Cooper in the semifinal. Cooper is coached by Andy Cooper (Missouri State Bears) and his former teammate Brett Williams with the Bears and at Oakville High School.

U18 Boys Quarterfinals: 3:00 pm – Sportport #3
Columbia Pride – 0
Lou Fusz Cooper – 3
A pair of late goals, following a blocked penalty kick, propelled Lou Fusz to the victory today over the Pride team made up of veterans of the last two State Final 4 (Hickman 2009, Rock Bridge 2010). The PK save by Logan Ponche (Francis Howell North) gave his teammates the energy they needed to finish the match on a strong note. Ponche is a Drury Panther signee as is Derek Hoerman (Francis Howell Central), who buried a cross into the box in the final minutes of the game for the final score.

U18 Girls Final: 8:00 pm – Scott Gallagher Park
SLSG Navy – 0
SLSG Green Academy – 1
Looks like Shelby Hatz has a second State Championship ring to add to her collection for 2011. She and Emily Cline are part of the SLSG Green Academy team that won that Cup Final today. It’s the second State Cup for the Green squad, compared to three for the Navy squad, according to this article on the two teams from the Post-Dispatch.

U14 Boys Quarterfinals
Springfield SC – 2
Lou Fusz Kargacin – 0
Their third win, the second straight by shutout, sends the boys into the semifinals on Thursday against Tony Glavin Lions Celtic squad. Game time is 1:30 pm.

U17 Boys Quarterfinals
Springfield SC -
Lou Fusz Gregory –
No score is posted on the MYSA site but more importantly, the SSC squad is written into the semifinal slot against the Scott Gallagher Gold team tomorrow at 3:00 pm. Gallagher played to a scoreless draw against Lou Fusz Gregory team during Group play.

U17 Girls Final
Gallagher IL – 1
Gallagher Green – 0
Molly Brewer earns a State Championship medal as she and her teammates win again.

Springfield SC U15 Girls Represent at Missouri State Cup Saturday

Lydia Holtmann, Springfield Catholic 2014/Springfield SC 95/96

Lydia Holtmann, Springfield Catholic 2014/Springfield SC 95/96

The 2011 Missouri State Cup will be held June 11 – 16, 2011 in St. Louis, MO at the SLYSA and Sportport complexes. The Missouri State Cup is the first leg of the US Youth National Championship Series. All age groups (Under 13 up to Under 19) will participate June 11th – 16th. The 2012 Girls State Cup will be played in the Fall later this year as MYSA separates the tournaments by gender.

The state and regional events are a part of the annual US Youth Soccer National Championship Series that features over 10,000 teams, each competing for a chance to advance from state, to region and ultimately the national championship. In addition to the competition, teams are highlighting their talents for numerous college coaches that use the events as a primary recruiting tool.

State champions advance to one of four US Youth Soccer Regional Championships, where 926 teams will compete. The Region II Tournament (Midwest) will be held June 24-29 in Fox Cities, WI.

The National Championship field consists of these regional champions and National League representatives.

There is ONE girls teams from Southwest Missouri participating this year, the Springfield SC U15 squad that consists primarily of high school freshman and includes players such as:
Aspen Hawkins, Class 3 District 12 offensive player of the year for the Central Bulldogs as well as 1st Team Central Region honors.
Lydia Holtmann, who got the game-winner for the Springfield Catholic squad in the title game this year
Nicole Ortega, who’s 50 yard run past three defenders into the box created the opportunity for Holtmann
Kindra Lierz, who anchored the Glendale Falcons defense from her goalkeeper position while earning Goalkeeper of the Year honors for Class 3 Southwest Region
Miriam Melugin, who started every game in midfield for Kickapoo
Payton DeHart, who scored 12 goals for Nixa, including 5 game-winners
Emma Chilton, who started at outside defender but became a central midfielder for Parkview in their District title run

The team also includes Nikki Bates, Rebecca Burton, Abby Greene, Morgan Henry, Hannah Kofron, Megan Loethen, Taylor Merritt, Kasey Opfer, Jennifer Pittman, Taylor Stamper, Payton DeHart and Kenzie Dunaway.

Coached by Cory Carr, the girls are ranked #7 in Missouri and will begin play Saturday against Futura FC KCFC, the top-ranked team in the state and #5 in Region II. Only one team will advance to the semifinals so Saturday’s game will be critical if they want to advance. WC St Louis Academy is ranked #4 in Missouri and the top-ranked team in Group B, thus the likely semifinal opponent.

Ozark Conference Soccer – Glendale Positioned For Title

The race for the Conference Title is quickly coming to a close. With #1 Glendale (5-0-0) hosting #2 Rolla (7-1-0) and #3 Camdenton (6-1-0) hosting #4 Kickapoo (4-2-0), we’ll either see the a couple of teams separating themselves from the pack or a tightening race. I’ll be at Glendale to provide live reports.

Glendale Falcons, Spring 2011

Glendale Falcons, Spring 2011

Camdenton Lakers – 2 (2nd OT)
Kickapoo Chiefs – 1
The Lakers scored first, Cassie Hale from Miriam Taylor but the Chiefs were able to battle back and tie the score in stoppage time tonight. The game-winner came from the penalty spot in the second overtime period, McKenzie Manzer burying the shot after the foul.

Camdenton moves into second in the Conference race at 7-1-0 while Kickapoo falls out of contention to 4-3-0. The Lakers face Joplin Thursday to finish Conference play. Their loss came to Glendale, 2-3 in early April, so they need the Falcon’s to falter in two of their final three games to earn their first Conference title outright.

Glendale Falcons – 5
Rolla Bulldogs – 1
On senior night, senior forward Erica Torgeson got the game-winner in the 21st minute. The Falcon’s went on to score two more late in the 1st half, first from Molly Brewer who broke in on the right side and whose shot went in off the underside of the crossbar before bouncing out. It was good (I was 10 feet away. Senior Emily Cline also scored on a breakaway in the 36th min. Freshman Nicole Howard showed some fine dribbling skills as she took a ball into the box around a pair of defenders before hammering a shot the keeper got to but deflected into the back of the net. Brewer and Cline each scored a second goal on the evening for the final margin.

Rolla finishes 7-2 in the Conference. The Falcons are now 6-0-0 with games against Lebanon, Waynesville and Kickapoo remaining. The Chiefs will look to play spoilers next Wednesday at Cooper.

West Plains Zizzers – 0
Waynesville Tigers – 4

Joplin Eagles -
Lebanon Yellowjackets -

Ozark Conference Soccer

Four matches this evening, two of which are also District match ups. Keep an eye on Camdenton at Waynesville, a District 10 game and Joplin’s visit to Parkview. The Vikings have moved West into District 12, will the West End Girls be able to send a message?

Parkview Vikings – 2
Joplin Eagles – 1
Senior Kelsey Loderhose got both goals for the Vikings, via a free kick and one from the penalty spot.

West Plains Zizzers – 0
Glendale Falcons – 4
Molly Brewer scored 3 Goals and Emily Cline 1 Goal in the win

Waynesville Tigers – 1
Camdenton Lakers – 3

Hillcrest Hornets – 0

Ozark Conference – Rolla and Glendale Now 2-0

8 of the 10 programs have games today, with Camdenton visiting Glendale BUT playing at Kickapoo while Kickapoo heads East to Rolla. Lebanon seems to be finding their stride, could Parkview be in for some trouble today?

Parkview Vikings – 0
Lebanon Yellowjackets – 2
The Yellowjackets are applying the lessons learned in last years difficult campaign and earning some good wins. Goals by Janae Whillock and Abby Zimmerman on the road at Parkview.

JV game was won by Parkview, 3-1

Glendale Falcons – 3
Camdenton Lakers – 2
The Falcons got goals from Emily Cline (2G) and Molly Brewer (1G/2A), Allison Yoakam and Courtney Wampler earning assists. Glendale moves to 2-0 in the Conference and Camdenton is 1-1.

The JV defeated the Camdenton Lakers, 5-1.
