Evangel University Adding Mens and Womens Soccer

Evangel-LOGOVia Evangel Athletics – Evangel University has announced the addition of men’s and women’s soccer to its intercollegiate athletic offerings, beginning in the 2015-16 school year.

This will be the first time the university has offered women’s soccer and the first time to offer men’s soccer since the 1974 season. A Men’s Coach will be hired this Fall and a Women’s Coach sometime in 2015.

Evangel will play home matches at the Lake Country Soccer Complex on East Pythian Street in Springfield. Read more at Evangel.edu

Good news as it offers another opportunity for area players. When I last looked at this topic, in 2006 shortly after a $1 million upgrade the athletic facilities at the school, I pointed out that Evangel was the only school in the Heart of America Conference that did NOT offer soccer.

I pointed out in the story that there were nine area players who were playing the game at other HAAC schools, a list that has changed somewhat since then (Jewell and Lindenwood are now D2). I think the same opportunities to attract local players as well as from their core missionary students bode well.

Once again, MSHSAA.TV is offering live streaming of the games. Game times may change depending on the weather in Blue Springs!

Class 1
St Pius X are the defending champions, winning 3-1 over Principia last year. Springfield Catholic returns for the fifth straight year as the other returning program this season. The seniors on the Springfield squad won the schools (and Southwest Missouri’s) first soccer title as freshmen in 2010, repeating as sophomores and finishing 3rd last season. Led by Lydia Holtmann, I believe the Irish will play in the Consolation match again this year. The P-D looks at the match up and the challenge facing the Irish. They also offer a Preview.

Chelsea vs ManCity May 23rd in Busch Stadium

Busch Stadium Soccer seating chartHere is ticket information for the upcoming

match at Busch Stadium on May 23rd.

Reserved seats starting at $30 ** Premium Reserved seats starting at $100 ** All-inclusive seats starting at $140

* All Field Club, Midfield, Sideline and All-inclusive ticket buyers for the match on Thursday will receive a FREE ticket to the Chelsea FC training session on Wed, May 22 at 5:30 pm.

From an article in the Post-Dispatch earlier today

Seats will be added on the field while some in the upper deck in right field won’t be sold, bringing capacity for the game to about 42,000. Bryant said they’re hoping for a sellout, with fans coming from outside the area to see the game.

Fitting a soccer field into Busch Stadium will be a tight squeeze. The field will run from in front of the visiting dugout on the third-base line, along the first-base line, to the right field stands. It will be just short of 100 meters long, the minimum allowable length for an international match, which would probably preclude playing World Cup qualifying matches here. But because this match is an exhibition game, being a few feet short is permissible.
