Missouri Southern State University Director of Athletics Jared Bruggeman has announced the selection of Dwight Burgess as its new head women’s soccer coach. He begins his duties officially at Southern on August 15.

Burgess, a veteran of nearly 30 years in coaching, has spent the past ten years as both the men’s and women’s soccer coach at Capital University in Ohio. He coached the men from 2000-2009, and the women from 2002-2009.

“We’re very excited to have coach Burgess on our staff,” Bruggeman said. “He brings in a wealth of experience and talent and I have no doubt that he can continue the success that our women’s soccer program has had. I would also like to thank the efforts of the search committee. They worked hard, and under short notice, came through splendidly”

“I’m absolutely elated for the opportunity,” Burgess said. “I had ten great years at Capital and was very happy with what we accomplished, but felt it was time that I move on. It was late in the year and didn’t know what was out there, but was intrigued by the opportunity at Southern.”

“During the course of the interview process, I had a chance to spend some time with some current players and was even more drawn to the job and intrigued with their contagious excitement. I am looking forward to being a part of the tradition and being competitive in a very tough conference.”

Burgess turned around a struggling Capital men’s program that had in the previous seven seasons went 12-112-2 overall and just 1-62 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Crusaders men went 97-84-16 overall in Burgess’ tenure and 42-42-6 in the OAC, while he led the women to an 89-61-17 overall mark and 45-21-6 record in conference action.

Burgess’ men’s team won the OAC Conference title in November and he also had applied in January to be a member of the NCAA Rules Committee, with a September 2010 opening. In addition, Burgess is known as the “Voice of TheCrew” where he works as a color analyst. According to a Columbus OH sportswriter, Burgess will work MLS games “as much as possible.” via @smitchcd

Missouri State Bears Host Missouri Southern Lions In Early Women’s Soccer Exhibition

Missouri State Bears Host Missouri Southern LionsFreshman forward Becky Handley scored twice as the Missouri State women’s soccer offense was clicking on all cylinders in today’s exhibition match against Missouri Southern. The Bears defeated the Lions 4-0 at Plaster Field. Handley led off the scoring for the Bears in the 28th minute off a centering feed from fellow freshman Claire Hulcer. Two minutes later, Hulcer sent another centering feed into the box that was deflected high in the air by a Lions’ defender. Rachel Weimer tapped the ball into the back of the net for a 2-0 Bears lead.

In the 53rd minute of play, senior Jenna Dobkins picked up a loose ball near midfield. She dribbled to the top of the box and lasered the ball past the Lions’ keeper. Handley then added her second goal of the match in the 63rd minute off a rebound to give the Bears the 4-0 win (pictured above).

Jessica Teahan played the first half in net recording one save for the victory. Freshman keeper Chelsea Voet played in net for the Bears in the second half. She made one save to help preserve the shutout.

Missouri State will play one final exhibition match on Sunday against Central Missouri. Kickoff at Plaster Field will be at 6:00 p.m. The Bears begin the regular season on August 21 in Norman, Okla., against the Sooners.

MIAA Coaches Pick Central Missouri State First, SBU 5th, MSSU 7th

MIAA LogoTwo-time defending MIAA soccer champion Central Missouri State got the nod over Truman State for preseason No. 1 in the 2009 MIAA coaches poll, the league office announced Thursday.

The Jennies received six of nine first-place votes and totaled 62 points. Central Missouri won the MIAA title outright in 2008 after sharing the crown with Truman State in 2007. The Jennies advanced to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional tournament last season.

Truman State followed Central in the No. 2 spot, tallying 59 points with three first-place votes. The Bulldogs finished second in the MIAA in 2008 and have won eight of the 10 conference soccer championships. Truman was an NCAA quarterfinalist a year ago.

Nebraska-Omaha came in at No. 3 with 49 points. The Mavericks placed third in the MIAA in 2008 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

Washburn took the fourth spot, receiving 43 points. The Lady Blues were the fourth-place finishing team in the MIAA a year ago before making it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

As did the first four spots, numbers five through nine also stayed true to form from the final 2008 MIAA standings.

Southwest Baptist came in at No. 5

Missouri State Bears And Missouri Southern Lions Close Spring Season

The women were on the turf this evening at Plaster Stadium, getting in the final game of the Spring season between storms today. The Bears won 3-1 as both teams were working with depleted rosters due to injuries and graduation. I’ve got a few videos, including the one below featuring Christine Cross getting into the box down the right side and putting her shot to the far side netting. Enjoy!

Missouri Southern Lions Join Facebook

MSSU Soccer logoNow here’s a Coach who’s figuring out the whole social networking world.

Trevor Wachsman, Head Coach of the Missouri Southern Lions, has created a Facebook Page for fans and prospects to keep up with the team. It’s a step I would highly recommend for every high school and college program in the region. There are quite a few advantages:

1. By using a Page, you ensure that you maintain the “brand” you are developing and can be maintained across multiple seasons
2. With a Page, there is no need to become “Friends” with the prospects, players or fans. That ensures you aren’t communicating directly with any individual nor are you privy to details better left to their actual friends.
3. It allows your prospects, players and fans an easy way to promote the program with you by adding photos, videos, commenting or any of the other tools available on the site.
4. That includes keeping up on the news – MSSU SID Justin Maskus recently added an RSS feed for the women’s program so all news will now be fed directly to the Facebook page. For me, the real benefit will being able to grab game information as an electronic download so no need to retype schedules into my calendar.

Welcome to Facebook MSSU Lions Soccer! Any coaches with questions on this model, feel free to give me a call at 569-8062 or send me an email and I’d be happy to walk you through the process.

Speaking of which, come join SGFsoccer.com on Facebook as well. Get your fix any way you want it!

This Week In Ozarks Soccer

One week to go before High School practice begins but the folks in Joplin are already excited about the upcoming season. The video features Joplin Eagle’s Coach Ed Miller discussing all things soccer on the Joplin High School TV network. It includes an update on the contributions the Eagle’s made to the Missouri Southern Lion’s women’s squad and an update on who to watch on the Eagle’s team this Spring.

One week. I was going to have a redesigned Springfield Soccer website up prior to the start of the Girls season so if that’s the case, I’m going to have to put the pedal to the metal. Maybe I won’t count practice as part of the season…

I need your help. I’m going to put a few polls up, to confirm what I think I know about this website and your interests. The more of you that offer an opinion (once) the better off we’ll all be.

The Champion’s League is down to the Round of 16, with first legs scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday this week. There are UEFA Champions League – LIVE! broadcasts to enjoy:
Tuesday 1:30 pm on ESPN2 – FC Internazionale Milano vs. Manchester United FC
Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (Inter And Milan) Milan, Italy
Wednesday 1:30 pm on ESPN2 – Chelsea FC vs. Juventus FC
Stamford Bridge (Chelsea) London, England

I’ll be at Quincy Magoo’s taking in the games, come out and join me and help sell the owners on the value of advertising to the soccer community.

There are also late games to enjoy on ESPN Classic:
Tuesday 4:00 pm – Olympique Lyonnais vs. FC Barcelona
Stade de Gerland Lyon, France
Tuesday 6:00 pm – UEFA Champions League Today
Wednesday 4:00 pm – Real Madrid CF vs. Liverpool
Estadio Santiago Bernabeu Madrid, Spain
Wednesday 6:00 pm – UEFA Champions League Today

Oh, and for those of you who are still paying attention to this nonsense, the Editor of the student paper at Southwest Baptist contacted me today about this story and another one coming up:

I’m the managing editor for our student newspaper: the Omnibus. On Wednesday, I have a comprehensive story of the Wade firing. I have reactions from the soccer girls and an objective view. It might interest your readers to find out how SBU handled this situation.

Given my experiences with Southwest Baptist, I would have to question the use of the term objective but I should reserve judgment about a student paper on a highly conservative campus possibly diving into areas that might be negative to the administration or call into question the process. Maybe they’ll surprise me.

By the way, I think SBU did the right thing by firing Coach Wade. He indicated where his priorities were at with the choice he made and it was not with the girls and the school. Add in his comments about his skills at manipulation and if I were a parent, or a player, I would have to question everything I had experienced with him.

Missouri Southern Lions Sign 3 Recruits

Missouri Southern LionsMissouri Southern head coach Trevor Wachsman has announced the addition of three signees for the upcoming 2009 season. The newcomers are Candis Clark (Maryland Heights, Mo.), Corinne Tebbs (Burleson, Texas) and Alicia Vonderheid (Florissant, Mo.).

Clark has been a big part of three consecutive conference titles for the Maryland Heights Pattonville HS Pirates, including a district championship in 2007. Clark has tallied 37 goals and 19 assists for a total of 93 points the past two seasons. She is a three-time all-conference selection and was named the team MVP and was also a honorable-mention all-metro pick during her junior season.

Tebbs earned team MVP honors for the Burleson HS Elks in both the 2007 & 2008 campaigns. Tebbs is a two-time all-county selection and was a first-team all-district pick in 2006. She was honored with the team defensive MVP award for the 06 season. In the classroom, Tebbs was named to the Academic All-District squad in 2007. She also ran track, where she set the school record in the 100m hurdles.

Vonderheid has helped lead the Trinity Catholic HS Titans to three straight district championships and has been named the team MVP the past two seasons. Vonderheid is a two-time AAA first-team selection, while being a AAA honorable-mention performer as a freshman. She scored 16 goals and dished out 11 assists last year, along with eight goals and seven assists during her sophomore season despite missing nearly half the season due to an injury. Vonderheid also earned Missouri Class 1 second-team all-state honors and was an honorable-mention all-metro team selection last season.
