Thursday Sunshine and Games!

The regular season comes to an end two weeks from today. District seeding may occur as early as next week.

Greenwood Blue Jays – 0
Logan-Rogersville Wildcats – 2
A goal by Haley Weeks in the 3rd minute and one by Colette Mast, also in the first half, were enough to get the Wildcats past the Blue Jays tonight. Photos available here

Carthage Tigers – 4
Central Bulldogs – 2
Carthage goals by Jamileth Henriquez (2) Tristen Bass (1 goal, 1 assist), Miraya Lopez

Marshfield Wildcats – 6
Republic Tigers – 2
Marshfield goals were scored by Alex Cantrell, who had a hat trick, Kylea Ryser with a brace (that’s 2) and Danielle Coffman.

Neosho Wildcats – 0
Glendale Falcons – 10

OZARK CONFERENCE
The Bulldogs sit atop the Conference with an unblemished record (6-0). Still remaining after tonights game are Camdenton on May 2nd and Glendale on May 3rd. Can they hold on?

Lebanon vs Camdenton is also a District 10 game. Camdenton dreams of District glory this year, and therefor must get past Lebanon if they hope to finally beat Rolla. As the Lake News noted last week – This year’s CHS senior class is winless all-time against Rolla, which has ended the Lady Lakers’ postseason run in districts each of the past two seasons.

Miriam Melugin (KHS 2014) & Emma Chilton (PHS 2014)

Miriam Melugin (KHS 2014) & Emma Chilton (PHS 2014)

Parkview Vikings – 1 (2nd OT)
Kickapoo Chiefs – 0
Kelsey Loderhose buried a free kick from 30 yards (video) for the game winner in the 95th minute Thursday night. The game was scoreless through regulation and while the Chief’s had the better opportunities, including a ball off the underside of the crossbar and a breakaway by Katie Lynn that was cleared inside the six yard box by Holly Messick, they were unable to get the decisive goal.

The Vikings matched the Chiefs intensity tonight, aided and abetted by a recent change that has moved freshman Emma Chilton into the middle. Emma offers the Vikings more bite in the middle, a necessary ingredient in the Ozark Conference. The Vikings backline, led by McKenzie Payton, once again features Anna Withers, Messick and Amy Green and this experienced group will be key come Districts where a single goal can determine the outcome.

The Chiefs, who welcomed the return of McKenna Adams and Kate Bess from injuries, will look at how a foul 30 yards out impacted the outcome. Much like the Glendale match a month ago. Strong games against Ozark and Camdenton next week will be important to earning a #2 seed in preparation for Districts. Oh, and that rematch with the Falcon’s on May 11th.

Rolla Bulldogs – 5
Joplin Eagles – 0

Lebanon Yellowjackets – 0
Camdenton Lakers – 3
Camdenton goals by freshmen Morgan Henry and Whitney Snow and game winner by Danielle Brooks (junior). Camdenton improves to 11-4 and 5-1 in Conference play

Big O Sports Features The Parkview Vikings

Kelsey Loderhose, Parkview Vikings (2010)

Kelsey Loderhose, Parkview Vikings (2010)

Nice to see the local sports magazine feature the Girls High School game. Writer Logan Hoffman (Drury 2008) offers a look at the team and one of it’s key players, Jessica Maerz, in a story on pages 26-27. Click on this link and then navigate to the page to read the story. As Jessica notes, she’ll probably play a similar role on her Lynn Fighting Knight’s squad. The defensive responsibilities she and her back line partners – McKenzie Payton, Holly Messick, Aubrey Durst and Amy Greene (the last two are freshman) – provide in front of senior Caylin Manary ensure the team is competitive and are in a position to challenge this year.

As the Rolla Bulldogs will attest this year however, you need to score to win. The key to Parkview’s success this year points to the revival of Kelsey Loderhose in partnership with Shelby Stewart up top. Her 12 goals rank 2nd on the team behind Stewart’s 13 and give the Viking’s three real threats. Only Glendale has comparable depth.

Parkview Vikings – 8
Carthage Tigers – 0
On a cold evening on the turf at JFK Stadium, the Vikings attacked the visiting Tigers this evening much like their namesakes did 1200 years ago. While the Tiger defense was stout and worked hard to keep the attackers at bay, the ramparts were breached once the the Vikings applied their secret weapon – speed! The opening goal came as senior Shelby Stewart, a Missouri State Bear signee, found space and made a direct run down the center of the defense from 40 yards out. Her shot as she entered the box found the lower left corner in the 18th minute and the the walls quickly came down.

Parkview scored three more goals in in the next six minutes to take control of the game. Junior Kelsey Loderhose scored after winning the battle for a ball in the box with the GK and a defender, sr Jessica Maerz (Lynn University) hammered one into the roof of the net after a run down the left side and Loderhose got her second of the game as she ran onto a corner kick from Maerz.

The Vikings got four more in the second, from Maerz, McKenzie Payton, Loderhose and ? for the final margin. The Tigers were able to get into the Vikings box several times during the game, with both Jessica Diaz and Jamileth Henriquez creating problems for the defense but were unable to score. The highlight for the ladies came late when GK Phylicia Lewis stopped a penalty kick that was awarded for a hard tackle in the box.

Nixa Eagles – 3
Lebanon Yellowjackets – 0
Nixa got goals from Courtney Frerichs and a brace from newcomer Lauren Moats, to earn the win. Kelsey Bartell had assists on the 1st and 3rd goal, Rachel Murphy on the 2nd goal. Shutout: Kristin Miller

Blue Springs South Jaguars – 2
Kickapoo Chiefs – 1

Park Hill South Panthers – 2
Ozark Tigers – 1
Alicia Collard gave the Tigers the initial lead on her goal in the first half, assisted by Shannon Lacker. Park Hill knotted the score a minute into the second half on a quick counter attack. The Panther’s got the game-winner in the 67th minute on another quick counter attack. The Panther’s are ranked #10 in the preseason poll (Glendale is #9).

Jefferson City Jays – 1
Hazelwood West – 2 (2nd OT)
From STLhighschoolSports: The Wildcats win on a goal with 3 min remaining in the 2nd OT by Suzy Ryan. The Wildcats were clearly the more skilled of the two teams but they only had one goal to show for it in regulation. Kim Hawn put her team up 1-0 with a high rocket over the outstretched hands of Jays keeper Kelsey Vaught with 14 minutes left in the first half.

Jefferson City’s Kinsey Shouse tied the game 1-1 with 19:32 remaining in the second half on a penalty kick.on a low screamer past Hazelwood West goalkeeper Ashton Aubuchon, who dove but had no chance to stop it.
The win helped Hazelwood West improve to 4-0 while Jeff City fell to 3-1.

Caylin Manary, Parkview Vikings

A short visit to the home pitch of the Parkview Vikings on Wednesday afternoon to visit with the team, and in particular junior goalkeeper Caylin Manary. The Vikings have a Varsity roster with only 3 seniors, 5 juniors and 13 sophomores entering the season. I’ll let Caylin tell part of the story:

As befits a goalkeeper, she pointed to junior Jessica Maerz in the midfield and sophomore McKenzi Payton who will anchor the defense. For scoring, the Vikings will call on on jr. Shelby Stewart, probably the fastest forward in the region, and so. Kelsey Loderhose to help the Vikings compete offensively. It’s a solid core with the ability to score which will be necessary in the difficult District 11 lineup. Things were winding down Wednesday when I stopped by but you can see an example of Caylin’s ability, and Jess Maerz, in this short clip.

First game will be at Carthage, on Friday March 27th, against the first year team that will have had a pair of early games against Logan-Rogersville and Branson, also first year teams. The first District game will come the following Tuesday when they face Nixa. w00t!

SGFsoccer.com Names First All-Ozarks Freshman Squad

A common theme the past two seasons has been the increasing quality of the players who are advancing to the high school ranks. I wrote about it May 1st when I interviewed Natalie Smid and Rachel Scott of Springfield Catholic. I still remember the job that Ozark’s freshman did last year when the Tigers Opened Irish Eyes. Those sophomore players are now being clearly recognized as difference makers.

So I thought I’d tread some new ground and offer my personal take on a group of players that made a significant impact this year as freshman. I asked the coaches for their nominations, narrowed the list based upon my experience, and went back to the coaches a second time. My goal was to create a select list, a team that could come out and compete with some of the best in the region right now. I think we accomplished that with this group, the first of what I hope to make a regular effort. So here’s my All-Ozarks Freshman team.

    Forwards

Springfield Catholic vs Kickapoo ChiefsShelby Hatz, Springfield Catholic
Recognized as a 1st Team Regional player, Shelby wasted no time going forward and creating offensive opportunities for the Irish this year. Blessed with speed and attitude, she gave the Irish a a true 1-2 punch paired with Anna Delong up top. She delivered, scoring 19 goals (1st) and 51 (2nd) points with 13 (2nd) assists for the Irish. Shelby could develop into a top college prospect.

Glendale Falcons vs Kickapoo ChiefsMcKenna Adams, Kickapoo Chiefs
Didn’t show up on the varsity roster immediately for the Chiefs, but wasted no time in making an impact, scoring within minutes of coming on in the 2nd half against Rogers (AR) on March 29th. Her stats aren’t gaudy (6 goals and 4 assists this season) but defenses always knew when she had come in. McKenna earned Honorable Mention Ozark Conference and 2nd Team District recognition.

Bolivar Liberators vs Willard TigersJonna Welch, Bolivar Liberators
The photo tells the story of Jonna. The best forwards don’t have an off button and enter another zone when they reach the 18 yard box, much like Jonna. Jonna paired with Lindsy Archer up top and helped the Liberators reach the District final this year. She has the best shot in this group and was the leading scorer for the Liberators with 19 goals. Jonna is a 1st Team Central Region player.

    Midfielders

Glendale Falcons vs Incarnate Word Red Knights, QuarterfinalEmily Cline, Glendale Falcons
1st team, All-Ozark Conference, the only freshman to earn that distinction and one of the best athletes in the region. Emily has speed, leaping ability and was the leading scorer on the top Class 2 program in the region. 22 goals, 10 assists for 54 points, it’s her willingness to cover the flank defensively as well that makes her the most valuable player in this group.

Springfield Catholic beat Glendale Falcons in PK'sNatalie Smid, Springfield Catholic
Every team needs a playmaker, a two-way player with the technical skills and vision to bring the best out in their teammates. Natalie distinguished herself in that regard this year, exceeded in Class 1 only by her teammate Tara Bailes. It’s the most important position on the field and it will be her job next year. Natalie earned 1st Team Central Region recognition.

Parkview Vikings host Greenwood Blue JaysKelsey Loderhose, Parkview Vikings
One of several players on this list that was called on to deliver from a variety of positions this year, her most valuable contribution to the Vikings this year was when she moved into the middle. Kelsey’s work rate and tackling skills solidified the defense. Her attacking skills are top notch as well. Ozark Conference and District Honorable Mention honors.

Coach Mike Howard, Rolla Bulldogs, Wins 500th GameEllen Spooner, Rolla Bulldogs
One of two players described by their Coach as being needed on the field, which translated to playing every position but goalkeeper as the season progressed. Ellen’s ability to contribute across all of these roles is the foundation of a good midfielder and the reason she made this team at that position. Scored 8 goals while contributing 5 assists, she was 4th on the team in total points.

    Defenders

Kickapoo Chiefs vs Camdenton LakersKate Bess, Kickapoo Chiefs
Like her teammate McKenna, Kate was not on the early season rosters at Chiefs games but she was on the pitch. The best defenders are almost invisible in the sense that you may not notice them until they screw up. Kate was solid, reliable and when the Chiefs needed some players to step up in a season filled with injuries, she was there the entire season.

Springfield Catholic vs Bolivar Liberators Andrea Parker, Springfield Catholic
This is a player I neglected to recognize all season but will be a name to be reckoned with for the next three years. Playing primarily as a stopper in front of Anne Prenger, her skills and work rate gave the Irish another midfielder effectively. Look for her to step into Prenger’s position as sweeper next year, and continue the Irish dominance in the region. 2nd Team District honors.

Kickapoo Chiefs vs Camdenton LakersKali Kuse, Camdenton Lakers
A number of teams established new levels of achievement this season, and those improvements always start with defense. The Laker’s saw their goals allowed this year drop significantly, and it started with their sweeper. As important as Kali’s technical skills was her calmness under pressure, a quiet confidence that reflected onto her back line mates and helped Camdenton reach a new level of wins.

Glendale Falcons vs Ozark TigersJayme Braun, Ozark Tigers
The second player on this list who was called upon to play every position but goalie for her team. Working primarily as an outside midfielder and outside defender, Jayme left it all on the field. Equally comfortable in the attack or going in for a hard tackle, she helped establish a new attitude for the Tigers that will enhance their pursuit of the first ever Central Ozark Conference title next season. 2nd Team District honors.

    Goalkeeper

Springfield Catholic beat Glendale Falcons in PK'sRachel Scott, Springfield Catholic
What can you say about the goal keeper that helped lead the Irish to their first ever “Springfield City Championship”? With wins over Kickapoo and Glendale, she established herself as one of the top keepers in the region, regardless of class. MVP GK, Central Region honors, she finished 16-5-2 with 12 shutouts.

    Honorable Mention

Alex Cantrell, Marshfield Blue Jays, Forward
Alex is likely to set scoring records for the Blue Jays as her career progresses. 1st Team District honors.

Kelsey Haist, Nixa Eagles, Midfield
Asked to move to central midfield for the first time in her career, Kelsey earned 1st Team District honors for her work. She scored 7 goals, had 1 assist and was the second leading scorer after Stephanie Allen. Update – Honorable Mention Southwest Region!

Carsen Baron, Springfield Catholic, Midfield
A player who played every position except forward, she could develop into one of the best holding midfielders. Great long range shooting ability. 2nd Team District honors, Carsen had 6 assists and 5 goals this year.

McKenzie Payton, Parkview Vikings, Defender
One of only four freshman on the Ozark Conference list, McKenzie earned 2nd Team honors and is a relentless outside defender. 2nd Team Ozark Conference and Honorable Mention District honors.

Kristin Miller, Nixa Eagles, Goalkeeper
Helped keep the Eagles close in every game this year, will be part of an Eagles team that will need her after losing their top 2 career scoring leaders (Yach 2007, Allen 2008).
