PDL Soccer: Springfield Demize Fall to Thunder Bay Chill

Springfield Demize – 0
Thunder Bay Chill – 3
In a game that was much tighter than the score indicates, it was the visiting Chill that broke through Tuesday night. The initial advantage was obtained in the 18th minute when a PK was awarded, well finished by Anthony Putrus to the lower left corner.

The Demize had many opportunities this evening, especially in the first half when they earned half a dozen corner kicks but were unable to convert, with the video just one example (that’s Drury’s Marco Cherisma with the header). The Chill put it away with a pair of late goals as the Demize attempted to come back. A 70th minute goal by Christian Fernandez came on a run into the box, with a clinical finish just sliding underneath the onrushing keeper. In the 81st Christian slips a second to the far post after receiving a simple ball from Marcus in the six yard box.

The Demize fall to 2-10-1 and will take to the road for a pair of games against KC (Jul 9th) and Des Moines (Jul 11) before returning home for their final game on July 17th against the Colorado Real Foxes. The Foxes sit 3rd in the Heartland Conference.

KSPR Soccer Coverage

Drury Panthers vs Missouri Southern Lions If you aren’t watching KSPR-33 news (ABC) locally, then flip over to their Sports coverage tonight. Their Athlete of the Week tonight is a local prep soccer player. Update – congrats Tim. Oh, and here’s the video.

Mike Scott was also out to interview Steve Wilczewski and Marco Cherisma after last nights game against Missouri Southern (pictured). You can see the interviews as well as the first three goals by clicking on this link. Be patient, it’s at the end of the clip.

And keep an eye on MSSU – last night’s result was unusual and the team’s play was affected by injuries I’ve discovered.

Drury Panthers Dismantle MSSU Lions

Drury Panthers – 5
Missouri Southern Lions – 0
The Drury Panthers looked like a finally tuned sports car this evening as they faced their Western neighbors. The goals were all scored from inside the six yard box as the Panthers moved the ball with pace and urgency throughout the game. The first came in the 6th minute when Peter Higgins nodded a header past the keeper that was sent in by Ben Taylor. Marco Cherisma scored a pair, the first in the 13th minute from Taylor’s assist, the second in the 32nd from Steve Wilczewski.

The second goal was a classic, as the play started near the center circle as Higgin’s received a ball that he sent back to Taylor who was already beginning to move forward from his defensive position. Taylor’s give-and-go with Wilczewski 35 yards out was perfectly weighted and sent Taylor in unmarked on the left side. His run into the box allowed him to pick Cherisma out with a square ball that completely exposed the Lion’s defense.

With the #1 ranked University of Northern Kentucky Norsemen game on Friday, the Panther’s began looking to the bench early in the second half and the attack continued. The sense of urgency only seemed to increase as the competition for playing time on this squad is high. Micah Whorton was the primary beneficiary as he scored a brace in the second half, the first as he walked a ball into the net after the keeper went down and the second via header (pictured above) at the far post.

The Panther’s lost their final 4 conference games last year, including a 2-0 loss to NKU in their final home game, eliminating them from the GLVC playoffs. The string began after a 1-0 OT win at MSSU October 7th. While there is an obvious difference on the scoreboard, the key question is will not be ability. As I noted last year, it was not opportunity or ability that doomed the Panthers, it was a lack of discipline. Much like a players success in the transition from high school to college is defined not by athleticism or skill, but attitude, so will the Panther’s success this weekend be determined by their mental toughness.

And lest I forget, the Women will also have a challenge on their hands as the UNK Lady Norse are now ranked #3 in the Midwest Region, just behind Wisconsin-Parkside and ahead of #8 Drury. They just cracked the national rankings as well, at #20.

Big College Games This Weekend

In Springfield this week there are a several games with plenty to recommend. Lot’s to see outside of Springfield as well, which is also highlighted.

Wednesday – The Drury Panthers men’s team host the Missouri Southern Lion’s. Game time is 7 pm at Harrison Stadium and there are a full slate of local players represented on these two teams. Drury is still offering their $100 Season Athletic Pass as well as new events for youth players at the games (details below). Come support!

    Game of the Week

College Soccer: Drury Panthers vs Northern KentuckyFriday – The Drury Panthers will host Northern Kentucky University, game time is 7:30 pm. The Norsemen are ranked #1 in the country and extended their regular-season winning streak to 29 games with a 3-1 defeat of visiting Missouri S&T on Sunday. Tony Ray, a defender who leads the team in assists with 5, was featured in the Louisville Courier prior to the game. Drury is #1 in the GLVC at the moment, with a 4-0 record and 6 game winning streak, while NKU sits in 2nd with a 3-0 GLVC record.

Same situation in the individual statistics as the Panther’s Steve Wilczewski (Glendale 2006) leads the league with 8 goals and 4 assists for 20 points in 6 games. NKU’s Steven Beattie is just behind him, with 9 goals and 1 assist for 19 points in 7 games. Drury’s Marco Cherisma has 5 goals for 10 points, and Adam Peterson ranks ninth in the league in points per game at 1.50 with his four goals and one assist which points to more balanced scoring for the Panthers. Last year’s meeting was a 2-0 win for NKU at Drury, effectively knocking the Panther’s out of the GLVC Tournament.

The Women will play at 5:00 pm and will face a key test as well. Currently #1 in the GLVC with a similar 4-0 record, NKU comes in tied for 4th with a 2-1 record. The Norse finished 4th last year, just behind Drury and are currently ranked #20 nationally.

Sunday – The Drury Panthers host Indianapolis Greyhounds, with the women’s game at 12:00 pm and the men at 2:30 pm. Both the men’s and women’s teams are in 4th place and will be looking to keep pace early in the season. The men’s game feature’s the final visit for Brian Fishback (Parkview 2005), who wears #10, led team in scoring with 13 goals in 2007 and leads the team in assists this season with 3. He wears the captain’s armband for the Greyhounds and is the midfield general. If the entire Parkview team isn’t there, I’ll be disappointed!

Sunday – The Missouri State Lady Bears host the new Division 1 program, the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars. The Cougars are 4-3, including a win over SEMO Saturday. The Bear’s are 5-3-1 and are led by Jackie Jasper, who just set the career record for wins and shutouts, surpassing her predecessor Alexis Stormo.

At Rolla, the Missouri S&T Miners will host GLVC opponents Indianapolis on Friday and St Joseph’s on Sunday. I’ll be at the games on Friday, enroute to St Louis for a long weekend with my family to celebrate my birthday. Both games on Friday will be an excellent measure of the Miner’s opportunities for post-season play, while Sunday’s games are must win to keep pace.

At Joplin, the Missouri Southern Lions host Truman State, the defending MIAA Champions and currently #4 in the National rankings, jumping from#10. They are 7-0 while MSSU is 2-5 so it will be a challenge for the Lion’s but a great opportunity to see some quality soccer.

The men will host the Newman Jets at 7 pm Saturday. The Jet’s are a D2 program in Wichita that compete in the Heartland Conference and include former Carthage Tiger Nick Pfeifer (2005). They are 3-4-1 going into tomorrow’s game at Rockhurst, and will also host Drury next week.

SBU Bearcats host Drury PanthersAt Bolivar, the Southwest Baptist Bearcats have a pair of home games this week against MIAA foes. The SBU Bearcats will defend their 4-0-0 record on Thursday against Emporia State, with hopes of ending the day with the best start in the history of SBU soccer. Game time is 4:00 pm.

Washburn visits on Saturday. That game will also start at 4:00 pm. Through their first four contests, the Bearcats have outscored their opponents 21-1. Keep an eye on #14, Rhiane Mitchell, who has scored 10 of them (pictured against Drury earlier this season).

=====================
Drury Panthers LogoFuture Panthers and Lady Panthers (12 and under) will be encouraged to come on down after games and play some ball for a few minutes with selected Panthers and Lady Panthers, who will stick around to make it an even more memorable event for the kids.

After all, who wouldn’t enjoy a chance to grab an autograph, kick the soccer ball around on the turf at Harrison Stadium … and in general, really get to know “Your Panthers?” I also wanted to drop a reminder on the special activities we have during Drury soccer home contests this fall.

Our Andy’s “Compete For A Concrete” promotion – in which kids 12-and-under come out onto the field at halftime of soccer games and try to score a goal against “celebrity keepers” for Andy’s treats – has been very popular to date. The first volleyball home match of the season is Tuesday (7 p.m. vs. UMSL), and I know there’s a serving contest for the little folks to try to take home Andy’s as well.

Got a youth team interested in getting in on the fun at a future Drury soccer game? Then give head coach Alf Bilbao (873-7449) or associate head coach Ryan Swan ((873-7830) a call. We’ll make sure they not only get recognized over the P.A. system, but leave with some Andy’s treats and a good, healthy workout on the turf after the final DU game of the day has been completed.

Coester’s Regional College Soccer Report

Missouri State Bears vs Valparaiso Crusaders Missouri State Bears - 1 (2 OT)
Valparaiso Crusaders – 1
The Bears opened strong Friday evening, coming off of their Tournament win at New Mexico last week. Attacking with verve, they wasted no time exploiting the first opportunity to present itself. Kyle Windmueller, the man the MSU Standard calls the “go-to guy” did just that, beating his defender on the left side. His run into the box created space that midfielder Ryan Hennessey filled, receiving the square ball near the spot before slotting his shot just inside the far post in the 11th minute. The Bears kept up the attack, earning a 6-3 advantage in shots in the half.

The second half provided a mirror image of the first, with the Crusaders creating more opportunities, and beating the Bears with a goal in the 87th minute. It was scored by senior Paul Leitelt from 20 yards out as he found space of his own to hammer a shot to the far side netting. It might have been worse but the Bears were fortunate that Brandon Durk was prepared in the 75th minute, as he intercepted a crossing pass at the far post that he knocked down and goal keeper Alex Riggs quickly collected.

Two overtime periods with one near miss for the Bears as a set piece skipped just beyond Thomas Vania’s reach in the six yard box. Tonight marked the return of Springfield Demize player Isreal Bisoni (pictured, underneath MSU’s Justin Alford) who joined the Crusaders from Coffeyville CC, along with his teammate Rodolfo Lucas. Bisoni came on midway through the 1st half and played the majority of the game this evening at forward.

Kentucky Wesleyan – 1
The Drury University soccer Panthers kept their unbeaten start intact, defeating Kentucky Wesleyan 5-1 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match Friday afternoon. The Panthers, now 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the GLVC, received two goals from senior forward Marco Cherisma – pushing his season total to five – and single goals from juniors Steve Wilczewski (Glendale 2006) and Andrew Bordelon and sophomore Micah Whorton. Kyler Temple (Kickapoo 2008), Adam Peterson (Kickapoo 2007), Alex Palmer (Kickapoo 2007) and Danny Collins (Glendale 2007) all came on as substitutes in the game. Wilczewski, Drury’s leading scorer, was also interviewed by the Drury Mirror recently. Key take away?

Q: What is the better rivalry; Yankee’s/ Redsox’s or Glendale/Kickapoo?
A: I would have to say Glendale/Kickapoo, even though it’s a Glendale dominated rivalry.

Missouri Southern LionsMissouri Southern Lions – 0
Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds – 0
The game finished in a 0-0, scoreless tie that was halted in the 80th minute due to darkness. Nate Evans (Cassville 2007) joined Stuart Ziegler (West Plains 2008) and Jesse Clevenger (College Heights 2006) in the starting lineup.

Amanda Deml scored the only goal of the match on a free kick from 20 yards out to lead the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats to a 1-0 win over the Missouri Southern Lions in MIAA action Thursday afternoon. Joplin Eagle 2008 graduates Randi Russell and Lindsay Altman both got their first starts of the season, with Brianna McKenzie (Webb City 2008) and Brianna Ragains (Lebanon 2008) coming on as substitutes. Rusell went the entire 90 minutes, with 2 saves.

Springfield Demize Close Out Home Schedule Thursday

The Springfield Demize will close out their home schedule this Thursday evening when the Des Moines Menace visit. Stephen ‘Cody’ Reinberg (Drury 2008) has played every minute of every game this year on defense for the Menace and Marco Cherisma has played in seven games, while dealing with injuries. The Menace are coming off a pair of games at home against Thunder Bay, splitting them while winning the series this season 2-1-1, positioning themselves for the final run for the title. They also have to deal with the Colorado Rapids U23′s who will host the St Louis Lions this weekend after having a week off.

The Demize lost their road game at St Louis on Saturday by the score of 0-3.

I finished the video editing for Thursday nights game in Springfield, a 2-3 loss on an 82nd minute goal by Tom Heinemann. I missed Brett Thomas’ early goal but you can catch the final 4 goals as well as some ancillary action from the game in this video. See you Thursday at Cooper #1!

PDL Soccer: Springfield Demize Lose Another Tough One

PDL Soccer: Springfield Demize host St Louis Lions Springfield Demize – 2
St Louis Lions – 3
Despite taking an early lead on a 6th minute goal by Brett Thomas, from Danny Foerster, the Demize once again fell on a late goal by an opponent. The team played a man down from the 21st minute when Ous Senghore was given a second yellow, and the resultant red card ejection, for a hand ball in the box. The Lions captain, Deno Merrick (MO Baptist Head Coach), calmly slotted the PK into the lower left corner to tie the game. The Demize fought back however to take the lead again on Thomas’ second goal of the game, and the season, after Foerster’s run into the box saw his shot parried by a diving keeper but the rebound fell to Thomas. He calmly lifted the ball over the keeper and into the far side netting as the team continued to fight.

The lead held until the 77th minute when the Lion’s leading scorer, Tom Heinemann (Rockford University) took a ball from Mike Utley and broke into the six yard box before sliding his shot to the near post. Heinemann scored again in the 82nd as the Demize pushed forward in an attempt to earn their first win of the season and spoil the Lion’s efforts to remain in the race for the Heartland Division crown. The goals were Heinemann’s 6th and 7th of the season, leading the Lion’s. He was denied on a couple of early attempts as goalkeeper Chris Hanlon fought to keep his team close but it was once again to no avail.

I’ll have video of the game in the next day or two (it’s the holiday’s after all) the final 4 goals and other action from the game.

The Springfield Demize finish the season with an away game at St Louis on Saturday and their final home game of the season is Thursday July 10th when the Des Moines Menace visit. The Menace are in third at the moment, with a pair of games this weekend against the leaders Thunder Bay that will determine their fate. The game next Thursday will feature the return of Drury Panther players Cody Reinberg and Marco Cherisma who are both playing key roles for the Menace.

PDL: Des Moines Menace Shut Out Springfield Demize

Springfield DemizeAs the weather has warmed up, so it seems has the Menace offense. Marco Cherisma (Drury Panthers) got the first goal of the game in the 3rd minute, added a second in the 45th minute and was part of a seven goal onslaught Saturday night in Des Moines.

Update – story in the Des Moines Register

The Demize will return to action Thursday when they host the KC Brass at Cooper Soccer Complex. The game starts at 7:30 pm at Cooper #1.

PDL: Springfield Demize Announce 2008 Season Schedule

Springfield Demize Opening night for Springfield’s Professional Development League (PDL) team will be Mother’s Day weekend, and the start of the girls District playoffs. Saturday May 10th they will host the Colorado Rapid’s U23, with Lance Parker (MSU) in goal for the Rapids very likely.

The KC Brass visit twice, the first time May 22nd, just two days after the Class 3 Sectional that is traditionally held at Lake Country Soccer as well. They return two weeks later on June 6th, also the start of the Toyota Cup, being hosted by Lake Country this year. The Rapids U23′s will visit on Saturday June 7th.That should guarantee large crowds!

The final home games in early July feature Heartland Conference rivals St Louis and Des Moines, which will probably feature Drury forward Marco Cherisma. The games are bracketed by a pair of long distance road trips (to Colorado and Ontario). It’s a fairly balanced schedule that offers the St Louis Lions and Des Moines Menace as the final home games.

Springfield Demize 2008 Schedule

There will be an open tryout/mini-camp on March 14th, 15th, 16th and March 21st, 22nd, 23rd. Contact the team for more information.
