Ozark Lady Tigers Shut Out Kickapoo Chiefs
Ozark Tigers – 3
Kickapoo Chiefs – 0
The Tigers wrapped up the #2 seed tonight with their win over the Chiefs. The game-winner came 13 minutes in when Megan Stodden’s run into the box was rewarded, first receiving a pass from Megan Gunnel’s before slipping between a pair of defenders prior to shooting. While the score will draw plenty of attention, it was Paige Hemphill’s play between the posts that made a significant difference as the Chief’s attack was working well this evening.

A key noted by Coach Tom Davidson was a save on McKenna Adam’s who was able to get inside the box but her shot was smothered by Hemphill who waited to react to the shot. Shortly after that, the Tiger’s counter was begun when #13, Jackie Wacha, came well back into the defensive end on the strong side from her forward position and collected a ball cleared from the box. Her long ball down the right side was just over the head of the defender and sent #18 Alicia Collard streaking towards goal, never a pleasant site for a defense. Senior Eva Schwert (#21) was stride for stride with Alicia and was sent in alone by Collard’s square ball, after pulling the lone defender to her. Schwert easily lifted the ball over the charging goalkeeper and into the right side of the net, just inside the upright to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the 32nd minute.

The Tigers had another excellent opportunity only 2 minutes later but Shannon Johnson, and the Chief’s defense, was prepared. Senior Abby Anderson, who creates many opportunities from her right midfield position, in this case was back to block the first attempt while Johnson rebounded to block the 2nd attempt and the 3rd was sent over the crossbar.

The second half saw the Chiefs come out energized and in my opinion they had the majority of the play. The key to the Tigers success this season, at home in particular, is their discipline and patience. They’ve learned to keep the ball on the ground and work the short passes on the artificial surface, a lesson that usually requires at least one half for the visitors to learn. The Chief’s responded well but their two best chances, both by sophomore Marin Gelsheimer #(15), saw her 20 yard shot go just over the cross bar and her run into the box blunted by Hemphill.

The final goal was a wonderful counter-attack by the Tigers, with defensive midfielder Rachel Haden collecting a ball in the defensive end who sent Stodden on a run down the right side where there was lots of space. Alicia Collard soon arrived to receive the next pass, heading into the corner before releasing a fine cross to the center of the box. Jackie Wacha (#13) got to the ball before the defender and Taylor Jordan was at the back post to nod it into the open net, a fine reward for her long run made in support of the play from her midfield position.

As I was editing photos, the Amazing Rhythm Aces “My Tears Still Flow” from the Stacked Deck album came on. Probably the theme song for many teams, including the Chiefs, who have had inconsistent offensive output this year. One of my favorite bands, I hope they come back to Wildwood Springs Lodge again soon!

Bolivar Liberators – 4
Greenwood Blue Jays – 1
Jonna Welch put in all four goals for the Liberators, as these traditiional rivals battled in Bolivar. The offensive attack the large school Liberators have been using to work their way up the ladder in District 5 was more than the small school Jays could handle this evening, losing only their 2nd game of the year (both to larger schools). #12 Liza Salisbury had the goals for Greenwood.

Joplin Eagles – 1
Joplin McAuley – 0
Lauren Copple scored the first goal when she once again placed a corner kick directly in the net, unassisted. At the half, Joplin was up 1 to 0. Kelsey Sanders’ goal in the second half placed Joplin ahead 2 to 0. With just under 6 minutes left in the game, McAuley’s Arielle Santillian scored.

Bolivar Liberators Win On Late Goal at Nixa Eagles
Bolivar Liberators – 5
Nixa Eagles – 4
The Liberators knocked off their Central Ozark foes with a goal by freshman Sara Magana (28), who leaped into the air near the penalty spot to meet Jonna Welch’s (excellent cross from the right side, nodding it into the net beyond the reach of the keeper. Beautiful goal, scored in the 77th minute, to negate a comeback by the Eagles from a 4-2 halftime deficit.

Both teams are very athletic and committed, it was a lively game that saw the attack go back and forth throughout the match. 2-2 only 20 minutes into the game, Bolivar went on to score two more to gain the early advantage. A shot by Jonna Welch from the right side just outside the box somehow fell under the cross bar, and a throw-in by Julie Magana (23), done via the flip and near the endline, worked to perfection as she put it to the near upper corner where it was easily knocked in when the keeper was unable to handle the hard throw.

Both teams came out hard in the 2nd half but it was the Eagles that began to put together the passes necessary to maintain possession and create opportunities for themselves. The first came from the penalty spot, following a foul in the box. Taken confidently by Kelsey Haist, it energized the Eagles further and they continued the attack. The 4th goal was a beauty, nodded into the net at the far post by (18) from Haist’s cross near the right endline. Haist got to the spot by picking up an attempted clearance and then battling through 3 defenders, pushing the ball past a second attempt to stop her in the box, and then delivering the quality ball.

Bolivar’s goals were scored by Jody McFarlen (PK), Hannah Harris, Julie Magana, Jonna Welch, and the game winner in the 75th minute by Sarah Magana.

Bolivar and Nixa both have teams prepared to compete. The Liberators just want to go forward, and have the youth and energy to do that all night. Nixa appears poised to join Glendale, Kickapoo, Ozark and Catholic as a program that wants to move the ball on the ground and create goals. When they spread the field tonight, they were able to do just that. Bolivar’s pressure, and some early season injuries, meant they weren’t able to get the job done in the time available to them tonight. I’m looking forward to seeing both teams several more times with the playoffs only a month away now.

Janessa, Honorary Captain, Mt Home Bombers

Mtn. Home (AR) Bombers – 4
West Plains Zizzers – 0
Janessa, a fourth grader in the Mt Home (AR) school district is a big soccer fan. She’s battling cancer and goes to Little Rock every 2 weeks for chemo but wanted to see a game. The good weather meant today was the day – Janessa was an honorary captain and the team presented her a signed ball. The Zizzer’s offered a jersey signed by all the players (pictured) as well. Janessa handled the the coin toss (we lost the toss and mtn home deferred and let us have the choice anyway – good sportsmanship). It was a big night for Janessa and a nice win for the Bombers.

Waynesville Tigers Continue Their Run Through SW Region

Waynesville Tigers at Springfield Catholic Fightin' IrishWaynesville Tigers – 4
Springfield Catholic2 3
It was an offensive battle at the Irish field Tuesday evening with all of the goals, save one, scored in the first half. Catholic’s dynamic freshman forward Shelby Hatz, assisted by Rachel Herron, gave the home team their only advantage on the evening in the 7th minute. Katie Pritchard, assisted by Erica Combs, tied the game after hitting the upright twice prior. In the final 15 minutes of the half, Natascha Lord scored when she buried her second chance, after Rachel Scott some how parried her initial blast. Carsen Baron, working hard on the right side, made the needed run to be in position at the far post when Hatz put a square ball across the face of the goal. Pritchard got the game winner in stoppage time however when she won a 50/50 ball outside the box. Her quick shot slipped inside the near upright and Tigers went to half time with the lead.

The second half saw Catholic put significant pressure on the Tigers, with the best opportunity coming in the 65th minute, only to see Crystal Hutchinson get her fingers on the shot from the right side, tipping the ball up and off the crossbar. The Tigers put the game away on a late corner kick, Lord putting one of her fine balls to the far post where midfielder Erica Combs rose to meet it (pictured). The Irish got within one in stoppage time when Natalie Smid put away the rebound of a shot deflected by Hutchinson on Maddy Renner’s cross. Renner was tireless Tuesday night, making run after run into the offensive end from her midfield position, with balls from Parker, Bailes, Smid and her sister Ronnie offering a regular attacking option.

Congratulations to Katie Pritchard on setting the Class 2 state record with her 168th and 169th career goals.

Wednesday Game Reports

Parkview Vikings host Greenwood Blue JaysParkview Vikings – 3
Greenwood Blue Jays – 0
On a gorgeous evening, with 75 degree wind chills (had to write that!) the Vikings hosted their small school neighbors at JFK Stadium. Fresh from their tight battle with the Falcons the night before, Parkview came out with a chip on their shoulder and attacked the ball. It’s an approach the Jays are familiar with and they showed good discipline, slowly but certainly working the ball up to Caroline Jansen and Maddie Esther in the middle or Maria Allai on the right side. With a back line that all wear the captains armband (junior Maral Cavner, junior Liza Salisbury and #27), fronted by indefatigable sophomore stopper Maddie Smith, the Jays worked to take advantage of the wind in the first half.

Parkview has a fairly potent strike force however and their aggressive play eventually led to a pair of goals in the first half. The ultimate game-winner was scored by sr. Emmy Dale who won a 50/50 battle for a cross in front of the six yard box, sending her shot to the corner past the keeper. The cross was delivered by sophomore Shelbie Stewart, who had earlier won a 50/50 ball herself and broke down the left side of the field before sending the ball into the center. The second goal was scored in stoppage time and this time it was sr Courtney Ash who found a way to get the final touch on the ball as the GK and two of her defenders collided attempting to clear.

The second half saw the temperature and the fast surface have it’s effect on the Jays as they worked hard to keep up with the regular substitutions and wind aided through balls by the Vikings. They still found a way to get the ball forward and put some pressure on the Vikings keeper but the defense held firm. The Vikings got a final goal on a defensive breakdown as an attempted clearance on the right side was intercepted by Dale who’s shot from outside the box to the far side of the net was indefensible. BTW, that’s freshman Kelsey Loderhose getting to the ball in the photo above, in front of Megan Morris.

Springfield Catholic – 6
Willard Tigers – 0
Shelby Hatz scored three goals and added an assist. Tara Bailes had a goal and two assists. Anna DeLong got the game winner in the 3rd minute. Natalie Smid also scored, the first of her high school career. This is the kind of break out game I’ve been expecting from Hatz since I saw her at the Rolla Classic in late March. A good omen for Catholic.
