Pershing Captures Middle School Crown

Pershing Generals celebrate game-winner

Pershing Generals celebrate game-winner

The Pershing General’s returned to the winner’s circle this evening, following a three year absence, by defeating the Nixa Eagle’s 2-1. The Eagles opened the scoring in the 8th minute when #43 pounced on a loose ball that was mishandled by the goalkeeper. Unlike the last meeting between these two teams in early May, when Nixa won 3-2 after opening a 3-0 lead, the General’s comeback did not fall short.

Pershing’s first goal was scored Kasey Opfer on a second chance opportunity, when an initial shot hit the upright and came back out into play. That goal in the 21st minute sent the teams to halftime tied and drenched as a cold rain became coming down midway through the half. It was beginning to look like overtime, especially when with 7 minutes remaining Allie’s direct kick from the right side of the penalty area was somehow kept out by Pershing’s keeper.

The decisive blow was struck by Olivia Wolfram in the 68th minute (70 minute games). A diagonal ball from Pershing’s defensive end sent Wolfram towards goal in a foot-race with Nixa’s defense. Two key decisions by Wolfram, first a simple cut back towards goal that turned her defender and created space just outside the box and more importantly, a simple controlled shot to the far post that hit the upright and bounced into the back of the net. A lesson well-learned in patience after I saw her miss 4 or 5 similar opportunities the previous week in the semifinal win over Cherokee. A quick celebration, two minutes of frenzied defending as Nixa pushed for the equalizer and the game was over.

Tonight’s loss was the third straight for the Eagles in the Championship game. The results of that consistent level of play can be seen in their older ‘sisters’ results at Nixa High School. The next step will be finding it in themselves to get past Pershing/Glendale. They accomplished that with Catholic and Kickapoo the past two years. One more larger goal to achieve.

In the JV1 Final that preceded this game, the Bolivar Liberators won 8-0 over the Willard Tigers on six goals scored by #19

Cobras Capture Missouri U15 President’s Cup

Cobra SC at Missouri President's Cup tourney

Cobra SC at Missouri President's Cup tourney

Congratulations to the Cobra’s SC U15 Boys team who went undefeated this weekend, winning 4 games and giving up only a single goal in the process. They accomplished it in a 32 hour period as the tournament format required them to play the games between Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon.

They will be joined by Imo’s Pizza, from South County St Louis, who won the U16 Playoffs this weekend. Imo’s also went undefeated, outscoring their opponents 20-2 during their four games. Not a national championship but a nice addition to the trophies won by the club over many decades.

In addition, Ozark-based Vehr Factor advances unopposed to the U17 Tournament.

On the local front, here are photos of the Total Demize win over Springfield SC in the U15 Division.

Winners of the Missouri President’s Cup will advance to the Regional Presidents Cup tournament, which will be held June 16-19, 2011 in South Bend, Indiana. All Regional winners will then advance to the National Presidents Cup, which will be held July 7 – 10, 2011 at the James W. Crownie Soccer Park in Des Moines, Iowa.

This video is from this afternoon’s match against Metro Striker’s Red Bull. Cobra’s are in blue and hit the woodwork twice in this video, enroute to a win.

Presidents Cup Competition at Lake Country Soccer

Presidents Cup LogoThere are three levels of national competition in US Soccer. The highest level is the US Soccer Development Academy program, represented by the Sporting KC Juniors and the Scott Gallagher Missouri and Metro (IL) programs in metro St Louis. The second level is represented by the US Youth National Championships, including the Missouri State Cup, scheduled for early June this year in St Louis. The third level is the US Youth Soccer Presidents Cup. The Missouri competition for Boys is being held this weekend in Springfield.

There are four Age Brackets (U14 to U17). Representatives from this region competing this weekend include:
U15 – Cobras 96, OPSA Inferno 95/96, Springfield SC II, Total Demize SC 95/96
U16 – Springfield SC 94-95, SSC Fury 94/95,
U17 – Vehr Factor 93/94

Vehr Factor, as the only registered team from Missouri, will automatically advance to the Regional Championships June 16-19 in South Bend, IN.

Schedules for the games are now part of my Soccer Calendar (in the right sidebar) or

Girls Champions
U14 – St. Louis Scott Gallagher Navy 96/97
U15 – Missouri Elite ’96
U16 – None
U17 – St. Louis Scott Gallagher Red 93/94

The Presidents Cup provides an opportunity for competitive teams, who do not intend to participate in State Cup, to play in a national tournament series.

Semi-finalists from the previous year’s State Cup are not allowed to participate in the subsequent year’s Presidents Cup. Also, if you win Presidents Cup, you are not allowed to participate in that year’s State Cup. So if your team goes the Presidents Cup and wins, you cannot play State Cup in June, since your team will be the Missouri representative at the Regional Presidents Cup.

Greenwood Captures Classic Trophy

Kelsey Nau (Greenwood 2014) battles Central

The Blue Jays captured the Greenwood Classic on Saturday by holding off a determined Central squad. Freshman Kelsey Nau (pictured) got both goals for the Blue Jays.

Final
Greenwood Blue Jays- 2
Central Bulldogs – 1
A rematch between two teams that faced off Tuesday, the Blue Jays avenged their 1-4 loss to capture the title of their tournament Saturday afternoon. The match was lively with action that went end-to-end as the teams reveled in the warmth of the day and the competition. The Jays are fielding a young group, with five freshman in the starting line up, and they came through on the day. Kelsey Nau in particular, who partnered with Hallie Sutton in the midfield. Nau scored both goals for Greenwood and was opportunistic in her efforts. The first came after sophomore Mary-Margaret Kirkman wove her way through three defenders, got pushed wide but got her shot off from the right side. Nau swooped in from the left and buried the rebound about 22 minutes into the match.

Central came out in the second half and worked hard to equalize and had the better of the play but once again Greenwood surprised them with Nau getting her second goal about 18 min into the second half, against the run of play. Central came down on the restart and their freshman, Analyn Salvato, brought them back within one when her high shot from outside the box slipped through the GK’s fingers. The Blue Jay’s held on however to go on and capture the hardware.

3rd Place Game
Carthage Tigers – 3
Mt View Liberty – 6
The game was tight until the final 10 minutes when the Eagles scored two goals for the final margin. The game was 3-1 at halftime for Mt View, who opened the scoring about 10 min into the match. The Tigers came out strong in the second half to tie the game at 3 until the 51st when Mt View retook the lead at 4-3. Shelly Renegar had three I believe.

Photos from the game are available here

Greenwood Blue Jays – 1
Carthage Tigers – 0
Mary-Margaret Kirkman scored in the 1st half, assisted by Sally H’Doubler, to put the Blue Jays thru to the final.

Central Bulldogs – 8
Mt View/Liberty Eagles – 0
Freshman Analyn Salvato scored 5 goals for the Bulldogs. Aspen Hawkins, Kaitlin Toelke and Aleah Woodmansee also scored.

All games are being played at the Cooper Soccer Complex including the Greenwood Stadium Field and Field 2 (10:30 am game only). The games will consist of 35 minute halves with a 10 minute half time. MSHSAA Overtime procedures will be used (up to two 10 minute sessions followed by PK’s. A goal in OT will end the match).

Champions Challenge Tournament Saturday

Springfield SC vs MO Elite, U14 Girls

Springfield SC vs MO Elite, U14 Girls

Caught the opening match today in the U14 Girls group, featuring a pair of local squads. The first outdoor game of the season, both coaches were subbing regularly to keep the team fresh.

Springfield SC won 3-1, taking the lead in the 2nd half when a cross into the box was picked up on the far side. Olivia cut across the face of the goal before getting her shot off from outside the six yard box. Missouri Elite came back with some nice ball movement down the right before getting an open net goal after a square ball pulled the keeper out. SSC got the game winner when they pushed numbers into the box again where Abbie (?) buried a loose ball inside the six yard box. The final goal came on a breakaway and shot that got past the keeper.

Pictures for this game and the first half of the U14 Boys game between Springfield SC 96/97 1 against Edmonds Black are available on my photo site and Facebook.

MYSA Coaches Code of Conduct

A soccer game should be friendly and unifying – a spirited social and athletic occasion for players, coaches, referees and spectators. To clarify expectations of coach conduct, we jointly expect all coaches to conform to this code of conduct.

* Before, during and after the game, be an example of dignity, patience and positive spirit.
* Before a game, introduce yourself to the opposing coach and to the referee.
* During the game, you are responsible for the sportsmanship of your players. If one of your players is disrespectful, irresponsible or overly aggressive, take the player out of the game at least long enough for him/her to calm down.
* During the game, you are also responsible for the conduct of the parents of your players. It is imperative to explain acceptable player and parent behavior in a preseason meeting.
* Encourage them to applaud and cheer for good plays by either team. Discourage them and you may need to be forceful and direct from yelling at players and the referee.
* During the game, you are also responsible for the conduct of spectators rooting for your team.
* During the game, do not address the referee at all. If you have a small issue, discuss it with the referee calmly and patiently after the game.
* If you have a major complaint, or if you think the referee was unfair, biased, unfit or incompetent, report your opinion to your league. Your reactions will be taken seriously if they are presented objectively and formally.
* After the game, thank the referee and ask your players to do the same.

We stress two points:

Referees – especially young and inexperienced ones – are like your players and yourself, in that they need time to develop. You can play an important role in helping them to improve by letting them concentrate on the game. You can help by encouraging them, by accepting their inevitable, occasional mistakes and by offering constructive post-game comments. On the other hand, you could discourage and demoralize the referees by criticizing their decisions, by verbally abusing them and inciting-or even accepting-your own players’ overly aggressive behavior.

Your example is powerful, for better or worse. If you insist on fair play, if you concentrate on your players’ enjoyment of the game and their overall, long term development, and if you support the referee, your players and their parents will notice. If you encourage (or allow) your players to play outside the rules, if you’re overly concerned about results, and if you criticize the referee harshly, your players and their parents will also notice.

Think about what you’re doing during a game! Uphold the Spirit of the Game! If you follow the expectations described above, the spirit of the game will be alive and well in Missouri and will grow, along with the enjoyment of all.

Founders Cup Tournament Opens Saturday At Lake Country Soccer

Tournament season in Southwest Missouri opens with the newest event, the Founder’s Cup.

Games will be played by teams competing in the U9-U14 Boys age range as well as U11-U14 Girls as well as High School Girls.

The tournament will include the first games to be played on the new Astroturf surface on the soon to be christened Greenwood Stadium Field at the Cooper Soccer Complex. Following the ribbon-cutting event on Saturday at 11:00 am, there will be a Greenwood alumni game played at noon.

The first tournament game on the new surface looks to be a U14 Boy’s game at 2:00 pm between Metro United SC (St Louis) and the Kansas Rush. The new surface is an initial effort by Lake Country Soccer to increase their attractiveness to out-of-area teams. The cost of travel means that cancellations due to weather are forcing teams to consider locations that can deliver on their promise of soccer games.

Jack Jewsbury, KC Wizards

I had an opportunity to chat with Jack Jewsbury, KC Wizards and Kickapoo Chiefs (’99) earlier this week when he was in town for a Youth Clinic sponsored by Mediacom and Lake Country Soccer. The photo of him with Chad Jaeger, who played for Drury in the mid 90′s and now coaches here with Springfield SC, came after a conversation with the two. Chad noted he remembers Jack when he was coaching youth soccer in the early 90′s and Jack only came up to Chad’s lower chest. Now Jack has returned to coach the youth as well. The circle remains unbroken. Enjoy.
