Fontbonne opened the scoring with a goal by #7 Robyn Meesey with 12 minutes left in the first half. Westminster tied it up in the 50th minute when freshman Megan Gunnels (Ozark/MO Elite SC) finished a ball played squarely across the six by junior Jen Brotherton. Meesey answered back two minutes later when she finished a cross served from deep in the right corner by #22 Tori Preiss. Preiss extended the Griffin’s lead to 3-1 in the 72nd minute with a goal of her own. Meesey completed a hat-trick in the 79th minute finishing a cross from #6 Kendra Schilli. #14 Kaitlin Bramel (Rolla) scored the final goal of the game in the 81st minute to seal the 5-1 victory for Fontbonne.

Rolla Bulldogs – 10
Hillcrest Hornets – 0
A tough challenge for the Northside Springfield squad, as they traveled to Rolla on Wednesday to face the District 10 favorites in a game delayed one day due to field conditions. The game ended on Ashley Kerr’s goal when she followed Olivia Cox’s shot from the top of the box. Jillian Gerkey rejected the initial shot with her diving save but Ashley lifted it over the prone keeper from just outside the six yard box. The Hornets never backed off and made several trips into the Bulldogs box during my period at the game (2nd half) but don’t have as sophisticated an attack and were shutout.

For the Lady Bulldogs both Jaclyn Standfast and Ashley Kerr had hat tricks, with three goals each. Olivia Cox tallied two goals and Emily Spooner and Caitlin McFarland each added one. Cox and Kerr each had two assists with Kim Carter and Spooner scoring one each.

I took some time afterwards to chat with a pair of senior co-captains for the Bulldogs, checking in on their results so far this season and what the teams goals are. Here are Kim Carter and Ashley Kerr.

By the way, I saw today that Kim has signed to play at Fontbonne University Griffins in St Louis, joining former teammate Kaitlin Bramel at the D3 program.

Kickapoo Chiefs – 2
The Falcon’s earned their second win of the season over the Chiefs this evening on the strength of a pair of goals in stoppage time at the end of the first half. Both goals were opportunistic, with fortunate bounces in the run of play that were difficult reminders of the challenges the Chiefs have faced this season. The first, the ultimate game-winner, was scored by Falcon’s sophomore Lindsey Sprouse. An attempted clearance was deflected and “Sprousie” picked up the loose ball and went into the box unmarked before burying her shot. Less than a minute later, season assist leader Jeni Frewin found space on the left side and lifted her shot over the on-rushing keeper to the far post for a 2-0 lead.

The Chiefs imposed themselves on the visitors in the second half, only to see senior Rachel Duckworth deny them in the 49th minute when she some how found the length necessary to push the Chief’s shot wide. A minute later freshman McKenna Adams found the crossbar for the second time in the game before setting up senior Katy McLain for a goal in the 51st. Adam’s was a challenge for the Falcon’s all evening and on this occasion as she drew a pair of defenders on her run down the right side, she slid a square ball into the path of McLain’s parallel run down the left. Chiefs within one.

The rivalry always brings the best out in these ladies however and the Falcon’s attacked with renewed energy. Frewin saw her shot in the 57th go off the right upright with goalkeeper Shannon Johnson covering the rebound in the face of a hard challenge. A corner kick in the 64th was somehow sent over the crossbar, Johnson covered another Sprouse breakaway, but in the 68th senior Lorin Opfer buried a corner kick from Emilee Williams to increase the margin yet again.

The Chiefs got a penalty kick goal by senior Chealsey Russell in the 73rd minute after a push in the box. It required two attempts as senior Rachel Duckworth guessed correctly and blocked the initial shot but Russell didn’t miss the rebound opportunity. The final margin came late on yet another corner kick, this time Frewin running onto Emily Cline’s driven ball.

The Chief’s finish the regular season 10-10, losing their last two games but showing a renewed attack with the return of Russell, Blotter and Anderson from injury. Their District 12 opponents should be forewarned. The Falcon’s finish 17-5, 8-1 in the Ozark Conference, and have a group of seniors who remember well both the joy of District victory as sophomores and the disappointment of last years failure in the semifinals. Someone needs to buy some fireworks for the games in Lebanon next week.

Rolla wins their Classic, winning all three games while getting five goals from five players. Look out Ozark Conference Catholic takes 2nd Place by finishing 1-1-1 against the Class 2 competition, including a win against Washington and a tie against Hickman.

Rolla Bulldogs – 2
Hickman Kewpies – 0
A blast from just outside the box early in the second half by Ashley Kerr gave the Bulldogs their third straight win to open the season, propelling Coach Mike Howard to the 500th win of his career in the process. Freshman Ellen Spooner provided the final margin with her goal in the 66th. She picked up a loose ball after Jacklyn Standfast’s 30 yard run into the box. Her shot from the far left side carried over the keeper and into the upper side netting.

I’ll have photos and a story about Coach Howard’s accomplishment on Sunday.

Springfield Catholic – 5
Washington Jays – 0
Junior Anna Delong opened the flood gates in the 18th minute when she came back for a loose ball in the offensive third, turned and went straight to goal. Her shot from outside the box found the side netting on the far side and the Irish had the opening they needed. Shaking off the fatigue of four games in three days, in a Spring practice season that hasn’t allowed much in the way of full field game efforts, the Irish cleared the bench while getting goals from four players. The second goal was scored by freshman Shelby Hatz, from Carsen Baron’s corner kick in stoppage time of the first half. Delong got a second goal in the 49th minute, a hard low shot to the near corner. Baron buried a volley after freshman Emily Ortega sent a hard cross from the left. Emily Kessler finished things with a tap in to the far post after freshman Courtney Devlins fine run into the box.

Hickman Kewpies – 1
Washington Jays – 1
The Jays came back to tie the game today after the Kewpies went ahead on Katie Larue’s second goal this weekend.

Rolla Bulldogs – 1
Springfield Catholic – 0<del datetime="2008-03-22T18:19:08+00:00">
Jacklyn Standfast </del> Kaitlin Bramel got the gamewinner, with the assist from Jaclyn Standfast’s header off Ashely Kerr’s corner. It came in the xxth minute and the Bulldogs continued to press throughout the half as the Irish had difficulty getting started in their third game in three days. The second half saw a more even battle as the youthful Irish team warmed up with the clearing skies. Taking advantage of their wing speed, they had several opportunities in the final 10 minutes to earn the tie but the Bulldog defense is experienced and withstood the pressure.

Rolla Bulldogs – 2
Washington – 1
14th minute – Sophomore forward Olivia Cox put Rolla up 1-0 off a pass from Kim Carter.
31st minute – Ellie Ebinger tied the game for Washington.
79th minute – Sophomore midfielder Jaclyn Standfast scores game winner from an Ashley Kerr pass.

Springfield Catholic – 1
Hickman Kewpies – 1
12th minute – Senior Tara Bailes roofs a close range blast for Catholic
79th minute – Katie Larue knots things up for the Kewpies

Jaclyn Standfast, who got Rolla’s gamewinner tonight, is featured in the photo from the District Final last year against Lebanon.
