This is a very good result for the Bears, getting the win on a 50th minute goal from their midfield general, sophomore Samantha Aguilar. Sophomore midfielder Christine Cross earned the assist as she led Aguilar with a pass that resulted in a goal in the bottom left corner of the net. Tara Bailes (Catholic 2008) once again played significant minutes in midfield.

The Redhawks posted a 12-3-4 record last season while capturing their second consecutive Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. It looks like they were missing a key player, Casey Kraft (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) who does not show up in the box score but is expected to lead their offense this season. UPDATE – Southeast suffered a bad break before the game when senior standout Casey Kraft rolled an ankle in warmups. She did not play, but Nelson doesn’t believe the injury is serious.

The Bears will host Tulsa at home on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm

The Lions gave up a goal in the 47th minute to create a 1-0 deficit, only to see their senior leader Nikki Llewellyn tie the game in the 88th minute and get the game winner in the 105th minute to earn the win in their home opener. Megan Dimza assisted on the first goal, Shannon Kuhn on the second. UPDATE – They were the 39th and 40th goals of Llewellyn’s career.

Sophomore Lindsay Altman (Joplin 2007) and freshman Brianna McKenzie (Webb City) both earned minutes in the match, with McKenzie getting 1 shot off from her midfield position.

The Lions took the initial lead in the game, getting a goal from freshman Kevin Aubuchon, assisted by sophomore Nate Evans (Cassville 2007) in the 76th minute. The home team tied it on a 30 yard free kick from right wing in the 85th and got the game-winner 5 minutes into OT from a cross into the box. Stuart Ziegler (West Plains 2008) and Jesse Clevenger (College Heights 2006) both started for the Lions.

Brooke Ryan and freshman Melissa Young scored second half goals for the Lady Miners, who won a season opening contest for the first time since beating Winona State to start the 2003 campaign.

S&T tied the score again at the 62:08 mark when Mario Calderon redirected a ball from Brandon Moore (Rolla 2005) past goalkeeper Ryan Cruise to knot the score at three. But moments later, the Miners were whistled for a foul in the penalty area and Tom Mangotic made the penalty kick for what turned out to be the Eagles decisive goal.

Crowder College Roughriders Open With Exhibition at MSSU Lions

Crowder College Roughriders 1st Game at MSSU Lions The Missouri Southern Lions played host to their new neighbor, the Crowder College Roughriders, on Friday night with an exhibition soccer game played on the artificial surface at the football stadium. The score, 2-0 for the Lions, reflected the difference between the programs with the Junior College team visiting a Division 2 school. It was a competitive game, with goals scored in both periods by the Lions as they were able to limit the number of real opportunities the Roughriders could generate.

I caught the second goal, scored by new signee Kevin Aubuchon, which created strong buzz from his teammates on the sideline. The Lions signed 11 players for the upcoming season, including Stuart Ziegler from West Plains who will provide two-way support from his wide midfield position. Junior Ben Pantzlaff and senior Austin Whiles look to lead the charge from midfield while freshman Lawrence Lartey should see time at forward with Nate Evans (Cassville) and Jesse Clevenger (College Heights) while sophomore Eddie Mulholland (Jeff City) was orchestrating things from the backline.

The Roughriders have a slate of 18 games scheduled, playing against all of the Junior College programs in the state. Their region includes Meramec, Flo Valley (my alma mater and former national champions), East Central, Blue River, Jefferson (2006 Champions) and Maple Woods. With a roster that includes 11 players from Southwest Missouri, 7 from Northwest Arkansas and internationals from Scotland, England and Brazil, I am looking forward to Coach Brad Smith’s ability to blend the talent and cultures that are represented. After seeing Meramec last year in the Regional playoffs, I think they have a chance to surprise some folks this year. Missouri Southern Lions Sign 11 For Soccer

Missouri Southern LionsA total of 11 soccer players have signed letters-of-intent with Missouri Southern.

Kevin Aubuchon, a senior at St. Mary’s High School in St. Louis, is the lone men’s signee. He led the Dragons in scoring his senior year, earned first team all-conference honors the last two years and was a third team all-metro selection.

The Lions’ 10 women signees include Randi Russell and Stephanie Taylor from Joplin and Brianna McKenzie from Webb City. McKenzie did not play in high school since Webb City does not have a girls soccer team, but she has been part of the Arkansas Olympic Development Program.

The Lions signed another player from the Ozark Conference. Brianna Ragains set several school records at Lebanon, including career goals (66) and assists (40) entering her senior season this spring.

Also joining the Lions are goalkeeper Kimberly DeRaedt from Elgin, Ill., defenders Laura Creason from Blue Springs and Kara Hammann from St. Charles, defender/forward Michelle Dimza from Notre Dame High School in St. Louis, midfielder/forward Shannon Kuhn from Wentzville and utility player Audrey Copenhaver from St. Teresa’s Academy in Kansas City.

Copenhaver helped St. Teresa’s win state championships her freshman and sophomore years and was named the team’s most valuable player as a junior.

Creason and Dimza have been named to all-area teams, Kuhn has been her team’s leading scorer for three years, and DeRaedt posted 25 shutouts during the last two seasons.

Editors note – in addition to being able to see the Ozark Conference players this upcoming Spring season, we’ll be able to see Michelle Dimza and Audrey Copenhaver play at the Kickapoo Shootout April 11th and 12th.
