UPDATE – District 10 Finals at Camdenton are moved to Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the soccer field. If we can’t go tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., we’ll go Saturday afternoon before graduation. Waynesville has graduation tomorrow night, so that’s why we’d have to play early on Friday. Just a heads up. No worries. Can’t fight mother nature. One more day to prepare!

We’ll know three two of the four Sectional teams vying for a single spot in the State Final 4 by the end of the evening. The fourth slot will be determined tomorrow when Glendale and Nixa play. Note that there may be a time change on that game to try and avoid weather issues.

Parkview was able to get a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of the game tonight and ride that cushion to the first ever District title for the Girls program. The first goal was scored by sophomore Emily Courtney from a corner kick. Soon afterwards, Courtney provided an outlet for the defense and made a 40 yard run down the left hand side of the pitch before sending a square ball to Kelsey Loderhose. Kelsey received the ball, did a quick counter-clockwise move and sent a low hard shot across to the far post.

The game was a back-and-forth affair as both teams pushed hard in their pursuit of the hardware. Joplin came out much more organized in the second half and were able to put more pressure on the Vikings but the best opportunities came from several corner kicks in the final 15 minutes. The Vikings were not to be denied however and were able to blunt the Eagle’s efforts to get any closer.

The Vikings are chasing win their first District title, in their first visit to the Title game in 11 years. Joplin last earned the hardware three years ago. Parkview beat Joplin 2-1 on April 12th at home. Kelsey Loderhose got both goals in a 15 minute window of the first half, the first on a PK and the second on a direct kick. Anna Banwart scored for Joplin in the second half.

The winner will host the Glendale/Nixa winner on Tuesday, May 24th in the Sectional game.

In Kansas City, Lee’s Summit West hosts Ray-Pec tonight for the District Title, the winner will host Lee’s Summit North in one of the two Sectionals in the Metro area. Liberty awaits the winner of the Park Hill South/Truman game that is being played tomorrow.

OZARK CONFERENCE
The Bulldogs sit atop the Conference with an unblemished record (6-0). Still remaining after tonights game are Camdenton on May 2nd and Glendale on May 3rd. Can they hold on?

Lebanon vs Camdenton is also a District 10 game. Camdenton dreams of District glory this year, and therefor must get past Lebanon if they hope to finally beat Rolla. As the Lake News noted last week – This year’s CHS senior class is winless all-time against Rolla, which has ended the Lady Lakers’ postseason run in districts each of the past two seasons.

Miriam Melugin (KHS 2014) & Emma Chilton (PHS 2014)

The Vikings matched the Chiefs intensity tonight, aided and abetted by a recent change that has moved freshman Emma Chilton into the middle. Emma offers the Vikings more bite in the middle, a necessary ingredient in the Ozark Conference. The Vikings backline, led by McKenzie Payton, once again features Anna Withers, Messick and Amy Green and this experienced group will be key come Districts where a single goal can determine the outcome.

The Chiefs, who welcomed the return of McKenna Adams and Kate Bess from injuries, will look at how a foul 30 yards out impacted the outcome. Much like the Glendale match a month ago. Strong games against Ozark and Camdenton next week will be important to earning a #2 seed in preparation for Districts. Oh, and that rematch with the Falcon’s on May 11th.

McKenzie Danzer, Kickapoo Chiefs (2012)

The Chiefs got the game-winner in the first half from a reliable source. McKenna Adams was sent into the offensive end with a simple ball over the top of the defense and she buried it when the defense failed to anticipate her attack angle. The second goal was scored by Brittani Baker late in the half when her cross from the right side slipped past the goalkeeper and rolled into the open net. Senior midfield general Marin Gelsheimer scored the third goal 16 minutes into the second half to open up the lead for the Chiefs.

The game was never certain for Kickapoo however, despite controlling the majority of play. Both early goals benefited from keeper errors and as the game progressed, the limited bench the Chiefs have (only 30 players total, 15 on varsity at the moment) led to some sloppy play late. A penalty kick, when a fatigued defender took down a BSS player in the box, was saved by Danzer and a break-away midway through the second half was also rejected when Danzer dove into the play near the top of her box. The goal was scored on a cross to the near post that was flicked over the defender and keeper and tapped into an open net by BSS’s fireplug midfielder, #2.

On a more positive note (I try) the Chiefs showed very good communication and play before fatigue set in. Gelsheimer and freshman Miriam Melugin will go toe-to-toe with the other key midfield teams in the area (Brewer-Opfer at Glendale and Haist-Moats at Nixa) while McKenna Adams and Kaylee Stephens offer the Chiefs strong senior leadership down the middle of the pitch. More later with my District 11 preview early next week.

Kelsey Loderhose, Parkview Vikings (2010)

As the Rolla Bulldogs will attest this year however, you need to score to win. The key to Parkview’s success this year points to the revival of Kelsey Loderhose in partnership with Shelby Stewart up top. Her 12 goals rank 2nd on the team behind Stewart’s 13 and give the Viking’s three real threats. Only Glendale has comparable depth.

Kaylee Stephens (2011) battles Anna Withers (2011)

The Vikings came out a bit too relaxed in the second half, apparently content to try and defend their slight margin. The Chief’s were having none of it and attacked regularly and it was only quality work from senior Caylin Manary who kept them close. A hard shot to the lower corner was pushed just wide while Lauren Rowland’s shot from the right deflected off the upright. Rowland, Rachel McIntyrre and Casey Weitzel pushed hard into the Parkview defensive end, taking advantage of the space provided to them as the Viking’s concentrated on McKenna Adams. It was Adams who tied the game in the 76th when senior Megan Melugin’s simple flick header sent her in on a breakaway past the defense. Running into the box while protecting the ball from a late challenge, Adams was able to slip the ball just inside the upright and past the keeper (video below) in the 76th minute. The Chief’s had one final shot in regulation that Manary was able to tip over the crossbar to get the Vikings to OT.

Both teams created opportunities in the overtime periods but it was the Viking forwards who got the game winner. Stewart ran to a ball that was bouncing between a pair of players at midfield and using her body, advanced the ball and broke down the right side. As the defense collapsed on her, she slipped a through ball to Loderhose who ran onto the ball and slipped it up and over the on-rushing keeper (Danzer, only her second game back from a concussion against Nixa two weeks ago) and kept it on frame to scored her second of the day for the big win.

With the Class 3 District 11 seeding meeting scheduled for next Wednesday, only Tuesday’s Ozark vs Nixa derby remains to be played and have an effect on seeding. Parkview will host Ozark Friday May 7th while Glendale will host Kickapoo May 12th in key games that remain. Here’s one more video, of what it can be like when Shelby Stewart is running at a defense. From the Lake Sun Leader: Freshman striker Miriam Taylor scored four goals to lead Camdenton in a 10-0 hammering of the Hillcrest Hornets. The 51-minute mercy rule victory on Tuesday night marked the Lady Lakers’ third 10-0 win of the 2010 campaign. Taylor had a natural hat trick in the first 18 minutes of the match and scored her fourth goal to cap off a long dribbling run in the 44th minute.

From the Waynesville Daily Guide: Springfield Kickapoo junior forward McKenna Adams scored a goal and assisted on two others to help the Lady Chiefs topple the Lady Tigers 3-0 Tuesday night at Slaughter Field. It was Waynesville’s Ozark Conference opener. “She’s vicious,” WHS head coach Mike Gow said of Adams. ‘When she’s in the game, they look to her. She can just drill that ball from outside.” All three Kickapoo goals came in the first half, but Waynesville (1-3, 0-1 Ozark Conference) was effective stopping Adams the second. The WHS defense clamped down on her and she only got a few touches.

From the Carthage Press: The goal, setup by a blistering cross from Mandolin Smith, came in the 65th minute of regulation, breaking a scoreless tie. As it turned out, the goal — the first of the season by Carthage — was enough for the Lady Tigers to down Hillcrest at Fair Acres Sports Complex. Phylicia Lewis, who had four saves, registered her first shutout victory of the season after holding Hillcrest scoreless. Hillcrest, which was limited to only four shots on goal, was disrupted by Carthage’s trapping defense.

The junior varsity held on for a 3-1 victory over Hillcrest, the first win in program history.

Loderhose scored both goals in the first half as the Vikings took a 3 goal lead, with Alexandra Shupert getting the other goal. Jessica Maerz scored in the second, from Shelby Stewart before Amanda Davis scored for Logan-Rogersville. Melanie Allen also had an assist for Parkview.

Maddie Esther, Greenwood (2010) splits the defense

Once Greenwood was playing with the wind, their superior speed opened up the play even further leading to the final margin. Goals were scored by Mary-Margaret Kirkman, who had a hat trick as did sophomore Sara Cook. Senior Maddy Esther completed the scoring for the Blue Jays. By the way, send a shout out to Mary-Margaret Kirkman and her twin sister, Anna-Grace Kirkman, who moved here from Searcy, AR in January. After helping the Jay’s basketball program they are now on the pitch causing problems for opposing teams with their speed and game awareness.

Quite a battle on the West side tonight as the District 11 foes battled to a scoreless tie through regulation and two OT periods. PK’s went to the fifth and final shooters with Nixa’s shot going wide while junior Kelsey Loderhose buried her PK for the Viking’s win.

In the word’s of Laker’s Coach JD Hunter “Kinsey Shouse scores on a PK after a foul in the box was called on Camdenton 20 minutes into the first half. I wish I could say it was a bad call, but the call was dead on and so was the penalty kick.” Jeff City is the defending District 10 champion while Camdenton lost in PK’s in the semifinal round last year to Rolla, who in turn lost to Jeff City in the final.

The Lady Zizzers started the game strong, moving the ball and created some scoring chances, but couldn’t find the net. About midway through the half, the momentum shifted to Poplar Bluff. The Lady Mules opened the scoring in the 29th minute as Allie Pattillo sent Marissa Burroughs in behind the defense where she sent a ball past Sammi Phegley for a 1-0 lead.
