COC Soccer

The game with the most on the line tonight is a Class 2 match between District 11 foes Marshfield and Logan-Rogersville. In addition to being a Webster County derby, these two teams are part of a new five team line-up that opens one of them to becoming a District champion for the first time ever. The Blue Jays are the early pick after their first ever win over Bolivar earlier this season.

Logan-Rogersville Wildcats – 0
Marshfield Blue Jays – 1
Alex Cantrell scores the lone goal on a corner kick from Danielle Coffman in the first half. The Lady Jays then hold off a huge surge from Rog in the second half.

Nixa Eagles – 10
Branson Pirates – 0
Goals were scored by Payton DeHart, assisted by Kelsey Bartell; Bailey Pesek, assisted by Shelby Zielke; Brittany Kirkpatrick, assisted by DeHart; DeHart, assisted by Rachel Murphy and Pesek, assisted Halie Owen
in the first half. The second half saw goals scored by DeHart, assisted by Bartell; Bartell, assisted by Courtney Frerichs and Paige Townsend; Jordyn Hoskins, assisted by Kelsey Haist; Pesek unassisted and Jenny Hoffmann assist by Owen.

Shutout is shared by Kristin Miller and Lexi Stagner. Nixa is now 8-1. The Nixa JV won 6-0

Springfield Catholic – 8
Bolivar Liberators – 2
Freshman Nicole Ortega scored a brace (that’s two in British speak), one assisted by Emily Ortega. A brace by Shelby Hatz, one by Jordan Banasik and 3 by Natalie Smid. Bolivar goals by Jonna Welch and Mariah Roberts on a great header from an Izzy Mersch corner kick.

Neosho Wildcats – 1
Carthage Tigers – 2 (2nd OT)
After taking an early lead, on Tori Eads goal in the 6th minute, the Wildcats saw the Tigers grab a 73rd minute equalizer. The game-winner was scored by senior Madolin Smith, headed for NEO A&M soccer in Miama, OK in the Fall, when she found space in the box following a counter-attack.

COC Soccer – Nixa Shocks Catholic

Kelsey Haist's goal falls under cross bar

Kelsey Haist's goal falls under cross bar

No true Conference games as it’s small-schools versus large schools today BUT you can see Class 1 State Champions Springfield Catholic go up against #1 ranked Large School Nixa tonight.

Nixa Eagles - 2
Springfield Catholic – 1
Senior Kelsey Haist gave Nixa only their second win ever over Catholic when she buried her shot from the top of the box into the upper 90 in the 77th minute. Sr Kelsey Bartell won a ball at the top of the box, with the ball falling to junior Lauren Moats, who dribbled into the left side of the box, pulling defenders with her. Her simple ball back to the penalty circle found Haist who one-timed her shot, which was just beyond the reach of the Catholic keeper (see photo).

It was an epic battle, the type of competition that shows the levels that can be reached by players who love the game and competing, regardless of gender. Add in the fact that these two teams are very familiar with each other, stocked with Club players on each side, and it was easy to see that bragging rights were on the line as well. The Class 3 Coaches in the region, and I, identified the Eagles as the early season favorites in Class 3 and tonight they delivered on that promise. For the Fightin’ Irish, losing at any time in the season is something to take personally.

The keeper’s established the tone early. Nixa’s Kristin Miller throwing herself at the feet of Shelby Hatz on the breakaway, Goetzinger charging out beyond the box to clear a Nixa effort. Catholic broke through first, with Bekah Bade running through an attempted clearance, breaking in alone and calmly slotting her shot to the far post 13 minutes in. It was a frenetic pace, exemplified by freshman Nicole Ortega later shaking off not one but two hard tackles to get down the line before crossing the ball into the box. Somehow Nixa held on as Catholic were unable to convert any of their set pieces tonight, a critical element in the Eagle’s win.

The Eagle’s showed a confident approach to the game that only comes from experience. They played their game, run by Haist and Moats, that concentrates on simple passes, working the triangle and getting numbers into the box. The fact that they were able to bring not 11, but 17 players to that effort, led to fresher legs at the end. The tying goal was scored in the 37th minute, moved down the left side before Courtney Frerichs found Rachel Murphy near the penalty circle. Her shot bounced off a defender and into the net as the keeper was unable to recover from her initial dive. Haist got her game winner in the final 3 minutes of the second half. Coincidence? I think not.

Catholic will look back at this game and justifiably feel they could have won, with more and better opportunities in the box. Nixa was opportunistic and the game-winner came as they were imposing themselves on the Irish defense over the final 20 minutes. A simple adjustment, which reduced the breakaway opportunities Catholic was able to create in the first half, helped give Nixa the confidence to attack Catholic and get a win that will help them in late May when it matters most.

Republic Tigers – 2
Carl Junction Bulldogs – 5

Marshfield Blue Jays – 7
Branson Pirates – 0
Danielle Coffman scores four goals, Alex Cantrell scores one and has four assist. Kylea Ryser and Morgan Blackstock both add one each.

Monday – Republic, Nixa, Warrensburg grab Wins

Tabitha Iles, Republic Tigers (2014)

Tabitha Iles, Republic Tigers (2014)

An early clash in Class 2 District 12 that will feature a first time District title winner this year

Hillcrest Hornets – 0
Republic Tigers – 4
The Tiger’s visited Hillcrest today and faced an early District challenge against the Hornets. The key difference between these two teams at the moment is the scoring capabilities the Tiger’s have discovered in their freshman class. The Tiger’s took the lead in the first half from Tabitha Iles, who also scored the last goal today. The second half saw freshman Sierra Casagrande extending the lead with a direct kick from 26 yards that flew straight into the upper corner of the net. Senior captain Sam Minor was credited with the 3rd goal, scored from a scramble inside the six yard box.

This is a good Hillcrest team, with some key components in place. I’ll have more details once I have a roster.

Camdenton Lakers – 1
Nixa Eagles – 2
Camdenton took a first half lead, on Freshman midfielder Whitney Snow’s direct free kick in the 37th minute, only to see Nixa come from behind to remain undefeated. Jr Lauren Moats, assisted by Abby Turnbull, got the 1st goal for Nixa. Paige Townsend got the game-winner, assisted by Kelsey Bartell.

Central Bulldogs – 2
Warrensburg Tigers – 5
A lively game this evening as the Bulldogs shrugged off Saturday’s loss and came out strong against Warrensburg, who will battle Harrisonville and Bolivar for the Class 2 District title. The Tigers have a pair of forwards that any team would benefit from, both front runners with a nose for the goal (#8 and #11). The game was 3-0 when I arrived late in the first half but it was Central who were pushing forward regularly.

Freshman Aspen Hawkins and sophomore Lauren Zeh run the midfield for the Bulldogs and the pair never stop moving, and seem to have already evolved an unspoken communication, despite only a month together. With freshman Analyn Salvato up top, the trio are as fast as any three players in the region. Their goals exposed Warrensburg weakness, which is a lack of pace. The first goal came late in the first half when Aspen’s direct kick from 30+ yards escaped the keepers initial effort to corral it and Salvato was there to bury the rebound. In the second half, Hawkins simple through ball allowed Zeh to outpace the defense from midfield and as she does regularly, despite the keepers diving attempt, Zeh kept the ball in front of her and slipped the rebound into the empty net.

Warrensburg is an experienced team and midfielder #7 seems to set the tone for the Tigers. Play simple, let the ball do the work and exploit their strength up top. She also contributed a goal of her own when she hammered a half-volley that had bounced out to her, burying it high and away from the keeper. A good road win on a cold and blustery day that will prepare them for District play.

Game determined by the wind. Ozark had the wind in the first half and went to the break with a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jackie Wacha assisted by Mollie Killion. Catholic scored 4 in the second half with the wind. Bekah Bade assisted by Shelby Hatz, Emily Ortega assisted by Natalie Smid, Nicole Ortega assisted by Hatz, and Smid from a penalty kick.

The Warriors are benefiting from the decision to combine their sports programs with College Heights Christian last Summer. Rather than dressing 10 as they did at times in 2010, they have a full bench and the ability to get out and compete for 80 minutes now. Friday Game Reports

McKenzie Danzer, Kickapoo Chiefs (2012)

McKenzie Danzer, Kickapoo Chiefs (2012)

A pair of Kansas City teams are visiting Springfield this weekend, with matches against Kickapoo and Ozark on their Friday-Saturday schedule.

Kickapoo Chiefs – 3
Blue Springs South – 1
The Chiefs got the game-winner in the first half from a reliable source. McKenna Adams was sent into the offensive end with a simple ball over the top of the defense and she buried it when the defense failed to anticipate her attack angle. The second goal was scored by Brittani Baker late in the half when her cross from the right side slipped past the goalkeeper and rolled into the open net. Senior midfield general Marin Gelsheimer scored the third goal 16 minutes into the second half to open up the lead for the Chiefs.

The game was never certain for Kickapoo however, despite controlling the majority of play. Both early goals benefited from keeper errors and as the game progressed, the limited bench the Chiefs have (only 30 players total, 15 on varsity at the moment) led to some sloppy play late. A penalty kick, when a fatigued defender took down a BSS player in the box, was saved by Danzer and a break-away midway through the second half was also rejected when Danzer dove into the play near the top of her box. The goal was scored on a cross to the near post that was flicked over the defender and keeper and tapped into an open net by BSS’s fireplug midfielder, #2.

On a more positive note (I try) the Chiefs showed very good communication and play before fatigue set in. Gelsheimer and freshman Miriam Melugin will go toe-to-toe with the other key midfield teams in the area (Brewer-Opfer at Glendale and Haist-Moats at Nixa) while McKenna Adams and Kaylee Stephens offer the Chiefs strong senior leadership down the middle of the pitch. More later with my District 11 preview early next week.

Class 3 Girls Soccer – Nixa Eagles Will Face Rock Bridge Saturday

Kelsey Bartell, Nixa tumbles in front of Brittany Dunn, Willard goalkeeper

Kelsey Bartell, Nixa tumbles in front of Brittany Dunn, Willard goalkeeper

Nixa Eagles (18-5) – 3
Willard Tigers (13-12) – 0
In a season that matched the TV series “Lost” for twist and turns, a pair of Central Ozark Conference squads met this evening to battle for a chance to reach the Quarterfinals. Both teams were coming off emotional wins, having earned their first ever District titles and now faced the opportunity of being one game away from the State Final 4.

The Tiger’s came out disciplined and fronted the Eagle’s in an organized fashion but were unable to match the Eagle’s attacking prowess. In the first minute of the match, junior Kelsey Bartell streaked into the area but the Tiger’s fine goalkeeper, Brittany Dunn was there to meet her and pull in the ball as Bartell tumbled (pictured). That set the tone for the game however as the teams worked to break through.

Nixa got what turned out the be the game-winner eleven minutes in when a ball came from the far right side to the left where junior Kelsey Haist was waiting. As she turned to goal, she cut the ball back and stepped free of her defender just long enough to get off a shot that slid just inside the left upright while never leaving the surface from about 16 yards out.

Bartell scored the final two goals for the Eagles as the diminutive striker, who is willing to run full speed into the tightest spots, scored in the 33rd and 67th minutes for the final margin. Her first came as sophomore Lauren Moats got to the endline and sent a ball into the six yard box. Bartell charged in and somehow got it between the upright and a charging Dunn, staying upright the entire time this time around.

Bartell and Moats hooked up again for the final goal. Moats came all the way back into the defensive third to pick up a ball along the sideline. After controlling the ball and sprinting down the line, Moats threaded a diagonal ball to split a pair of defenders and send Bartell into the box unmarked. Patience and a simple ball to the far post beat Dunn’s best efforts.

The Tiger’s will be well prepared to defend their title next season, returning 8 starters including Dunn. With Rebekah Mann (#17) and Deshann Rexroat (#16) graduating, it’s imperative that this young squad find central midfielders with the intelligence and work ethic both exhibited this season but there are several candidates including three freshman – Regan Textor, Macie Cotter and Miriam Dashtipour. The key will be be scoring. That responsibility will fall to a new coach as Coach Geoff Meiss has stepped down from his position, after setting new records for the program, including the District title. A new coach has been identified and an announcement is expected once the Board approves it. Congratulations to Coach Meiss and the girls on their success!

Nixa Eagles Win On Moat’s Goal In Final Seconds

Lauren Moats (Nixa 2011) Celebrates Game Winner

Lauren Moats (Nixa 2011) Celebrates Game Winner

#4 Ozark Tigers – 1
#5 Nixa Eagles – 2
Junior Sophomore Lauren Moats, the most significant addition to Girls soccer in the region this season, delivered the knock out blow for the Nixa Eagles with the game-winning goal in the final seconds of the match with Ozark this evening. Pouncing on the loose ball after goalie Paige Hemphill’s diving save of Jo Pavlowsky’s shot from 12 yards, Moat’s slipped the ball just inside the upright beyond the reach of the prone All-State goalkeeper. With the final whistle coming before the restart, the Eagles captured their most important win in recent memory, overcoming their Christian County rivals and their own internal demons.

Eleven days ago, the Eagles faced off against Ozark for the Central Ozark Conference title, only to fall in PK’s after tying the game with 7 min remaining. It was the fourth District game that the Eagle’s had lost by a goal or in PK’s, pushing them to the 5th seed in the playoffs. A team with all of the necessary components but one that had not ‘found it’s identity’ yet in the words of one father. While not a full butterfly, this chrysalis may be ready to shed the pupa holding it back with tonights win.

The game started quickly and Nixa forced Ozark keeper Paige Hemphill to come out to stop a foray in the 3rd minute. While Nixa was maintaining the majority of the possession, the Tiger’s came close a couple of times in the first 20 minutes, primarily due to a defense that was offering too much time and space in the box. Only Ozark’s inability to get a shot on frame kept the Eagles close. The Tiger’s did break through in the 27th when a strong run down the right side by Hadleigh Jordan, followed by her square ball, created an opportunity for Jordan Taylor in the six yard box. It skipped past as Eagle keeper Kristin Miller came out but Danielle Poivre was waiting at the far post to tap in the loose ball.

The Tiger’s lead held late although Jayme Braun was called upon to clear balls off the line not once but twice, in the 32nd after Kelsey Haist send Courtney Frerich in alone but her shot was parried, and again in the 45th minute following a corner kick.

The Eagles finally broke through, tying the score when Kelsey Haist buried her penalty kick following a foul on Kelsey Bartell in the box on a set piece. The opportunity came about from a hustle play by Moats who chased down a ball on the right side the defense and everyone else thought was going to roll out. Moats didn’t give up on it, kept it in play and ran towards the box when she was tripped from behind just outside the area. The free kick by Haist was followed by the foul and the goal.

The previous result was fresh in both teams minds but this was a new Eagle’s squad as Head Coach Evan Palmer made some changes during the course of the game. The key one was giving freshman Jordyn Hoskins (#2) significant minutes in central midfield during the second half as well as moving Haist into the middle with her. The additional energy and pace created more pressure as the Eagle’s stayed fresher going to the final minutes. The Tiger’s made one final foray in the 77th minute that almost broke the Eagle’s hearts but junior Courtney Frerich’s came off the goal line following a corner kick and chested a loose ball away from danger.

The Eagle’s game winner came minutes later as Kelsey Bartell went high to intercept a ball, freshman Fitzpatrick stepped up to collect the clearance and carry the ball all the way to the box before her cross set up the game-winner.

The Eagle’s face off against Parkview on Wednesday. The two teams faced each other March 30th, in a scoreless game that was decided by penalty kicks, with Nixa falling 4-5 in PK’s.

Marin Gelsheimer (pictured) scored a pair of goals, the first in the 7th minute as she buried a shot from 22 yards into the side netting and a similar goal in the 18th that skipped underneath a diving goalkeeper. Additional goals by McKenna Adams, Danielle Smulczenski (2), Casey Weitzel and Megan Manes provided the final margin.

The Chief’s get a rematch with the Glendale Falcon’s as a result, on Wednesday evening following graduation ceremonies early next week. Glendale has won the two previous games against Kickapoo, with a 4-2 win in March and 3-1 on Wednesday this week.
