Missouri State Bears Men’s Soccer Update

Three members of Missouri State men’s soccer team played in the U19 Boy’s title match Sunday at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship in Lancaster, Mass. Gerard Barbero, III, (So., Marietta, Ga.), Cameron Miller (So., Woodstock, Ga.) and Thomas Vania (So., Kennesaw, Ga.) are members of the North Atlanta Soccer Association (NASA) U-19 squad that lost to the Baltimore Bays 2-0 after earlier tying them 0-0 in the opening game at the Championship.

Barbero, a midfielder, played in 19 matches for the Bears a season ago, scoring one goal and assisting on two others. Miller, also a midfielder, got on the pitch in 17 matches, starting twice for the Bears. Vania, a defender for the Bears, played in 20 of 22 matches a season ago and received the starting nod from head coach Jon Leamy 11 times.

Ryan Hennessy (North Kansas City HS/KC Pace) and Brian Wurst (Park Hill South/KC Pace/Drake) finished the regular season leading the KC Brass in games played and played the full 90 minutes on defense in the KC Brass’ 2-1 win over Real Colorado Foxes on July 18, 2009 at William Jewell College.

Des Moines Menace Clinch Playoff Spot With Win Over Springfield Demize

Demize LogoThe Springfield Demize finished their final road trip of the season on Saturday evening in Des Moines where they fell 4-0 to the hosts. With the win the Des Moines Menace has secured a spot in the playoffs and a share of the division championship. With two games remaining, one point is all that is necessary to ensure home-field advantage along with the Heartland Division title.

Ben Taylor and a trio of Drake Bulldogs – Garrett Webb (recently named Preseason All-American), Julien Edwards and Hunter Kennedy – led the Menace’s late-game rampage.

Taylor assisted Webb (50th minute) and Edwards (84th) before capping off the night with an unassisted goal in the final minute. With his first points in eight matches, Taylor passes Armin Mujdzic (10 points) as the team’s leading scorer (11 points)

The Demize will finish their season at home on Friday against the Colorado Real Foxes. Their opportunity to move up from the bottom of the table disappeared with their 0-1 loss to the KC Brass last week. So the final goal will be to get their 3rd win of the season at home against the visitors. Game time is 7:30 pm, come out and cheer on the home side!

They’ll only face the Chill once, at home, which was a 0-1 loss last year.

PDL Soccer: Springfield Demize Hosting Pair Of Games Wed – Thu

The Springfield Demize will be hosting a pair of games Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday’s game is against the Thunder Bay Chill, a game rescheduled due to rain earlier this month. The Chill moved into a tie for 1st place in the Heartland Division with a 2-0 win over the Kansas City Brass Monday night, with 22 points in 9 games played. Tomorrow’s game will be their 4th in 5 days, which combined with the Demize’s strong play against them June 14th potentially boding well for our home boys.

The Demize is the only team without a shot at first place with six games remaining so their opportunity now is to play the spoiler, as the Chill and Colorado Rapids U23 are best positioned for the Division title. They host the St Louis Lions on Thursday evening, a team that has just lost 4 straight games to Thunder Bay after early success that included winning a spot in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. I’ll have video from the game Sunday between St Louis and Thunder Bay, a 3-2 win for the Chill that saw two Lions and one Chill player ejected from the game, finishing play 9v10.

On a related note, Carlos Correa of KOLR10 featured the Demize in his Sunday evening Latino Focus section of the newscast. You can catch the video here

But they’re also hoping a roster filled with international players can bring more than just skill and technique to the team. This season’s team is made up of players who were recruited from Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Serbia, Croatia and Australia.

“We’re a young team so, sometimes we have a lack of experience and its hard for everyone to together, but I think its going to be a good organization in the next two or three years,” said Mario Calderon.

PDL: Springfield Demize Fall To Heartland Conferenced Foe KC Brass

The good news? The hometown boys broke into the scoring column in the first half, tying the game in the 40th minute providing some positive momentum before the break. The goal, scored by Nebjosa Opacic on a header in close, was the first of the season in three games.

The bad news? Despite admonitions to avoid an early goal in the pre-game discussions, the Brass’ Austin Williams took advantage of a ball over the top of the defense to run onto the ball and lift it from outside the box over the onrushing goalkeeper in the 5th minute. The Brass capitalized at the start of the second half as well, getting what turned out to be the game-winner from x in the 49th minute. The final goal came late, as the Demize were caught up attempting to tie the game.

The primary reason the game was close was the stellar work of goalkeeper Chris Hanlon, who appears to be in mid-season form unlike the rest of his teammates. In the words of Brass Coach J (or was it L, his twin) Roblee, Chris can always be expected to come up with several remarkable saves during the course of a game, and this one was no different.

PDL: Springfield Demize Announce 2008 Season Schedule

Springfield Demize Opening night for Springfield’s Professional Development League (PDL) team will be Mother’s Day weekend, and the start of the girls District playoffs. Saturday May 10th they will host the Colorado Rapid’s U23, with Lance Parker (MSU) in goal for the Rapids very likely.

The KC Brass visit twice, the first time May 22nd, just two days after the Class 3 Sectional that is traditionally held at Lake Country Soccer as well. They return two weeks later on June 6th, also the start of the Toyota Cup, being hosted by Lake Country this year. The Rapids U23′s will visit on Saturday June 7th.That should guarantee large crowds!

The final home games in early July feature Heartland Conference rivals St Louis and Des Moines, which will probably feature Drury forward Marco Cherisma. The games are bracketed by a pair of long distance road trips (to Colorado and Ontario). It’s a fairly balanced schedule that offers the St Louis Lions and Des Moines Menace as the final home games.
