Ladies Soccer Grabs Bear Cup Award

SPRINGFIELD — For the second straight year, the Missouri State women’s soccer team took home the top prize of the night, and 25 individual student-athletes were recognized as part of ceremonies Monday (May 2) at the second annual Bears’ All-Sports Showcase at JQH Arena.

Coach Rob Brewer’s squad was the top point collector in the Bear Cup team competition for student development, academic achievement, athletic excellence, career development, and community outreach. The men’s soccer and women’s swimming programs were also finalists for the award, which women’s soccer won at the inaugural awards presentation in 2010.

MSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) served as the presenters for the evening and also took the lead in the nomination and selection process for the event and the awards presented. Read the rest here

Missouri State Lady Bears Spring Season

Missouri State Bears vs Missouri S&TThe Lady Bears opened their Spring season this afternoon with 90 minutes of soccer on the fast and windy Plaster Stadium pitch. Facing off against D2 Missouri S&T, the Spring season allows the teams to work on some projects and take out their energy against another team rather than their teammates.

Working in three 30 minute sessions, the first two were scoreless and offered a few insights into what the projects might be. I’ll comment on the Miner’s first, then the Lady Bears.

The Miner’s came out strong this afternoon, working hard to go forward and pressure the Bear’s. Reflective of the strong season they had in the Fall, when they reached the GLVC Playoff’s for the first time ever, the ladies worked the ball well. The team lost four key seniors from that run but return a strong core led by seniors to be Melissa Young (M/F), Paige Smothers (D) and Stacy Luquette who takes over the starting role in goal. Junior-to-be Colleen Lewis is the midfield general and she’d fit in well on the Bears.

The Bear’s lost seniors Jordan Reppell and Sarah Linsin from the backline that took them to the MVC Final last year. It appears they have also lost freshman Brooke Williams from the State Champion Liberty Jay’s, who was the most dangerous player on the pitch for them once Rachel Weimer went down injured.

Freshman Tiffany Laughlin may be called on to play the same role for the Bears she did for the Pattonville when she moved to the back line as a senior for the 2nd Place Pirates. In the middle I like junior Jesslyne McGrath’s calm under pressure and Adrianne Kalogerou also worked well in the outside defensive position. Lauren Wendt showed good positioning and the ability to get to the goal. All three Springfield players got in plenty of minutes (Bailes, Roberts, Stewart) with Bailes starting in central midfield and Roberts at an outside midfield position.

Missouri High School Soccer: Girls Class 1 District 11 Preview

Rebecca Mayus, Springfield Catholic (2011)

Rebecca Mayus, Springfield Catholic (2011)

Girls soccer has a new alignment this year. For those who missed my earlier story, MSHSAA has set up three equal classes with 16 Districts each (8 previously in Class 1 and 2). The intent is to offer Sectional and Quarterfinal games for every class. That also means there are twice as many District Champions this year (16 instead of 8). Somewhat reminiscent of Youth soccer (everyone gets a trophy) although as students of the game in this region are already aware, Class 1 District 11 would be a challenge for any team hoping to knock off the defending State Champion Fightin’ Irish, regardless of class.

There are three teams that will compete in the District this year. Joplin McAuley, Greenwood and Springfield Catholic.

Ally Adrian McAuley Warriors 2013

Ally Adrian, McAuley Warriors (2013)

The McAuley Warriors are aptly named, I always enjoy covering the ladies in Blue. Classic underdogs, the team struggled to maintain a roster of 11 players last year but never backed down. I don’t root often but it’s great seeing competitive games and the Warrior’s never disappoint. Their spirits are high this year as their team-sharing agreement with College Height’s kicks in. The two schools combined for one boys team last year (College Heights) and this year they Girls team plays under the McAuley banner. Rumor has it there could be as many as 18 on the final roster. Like most teams in the region, an influx of freshman will only help.

Sydney Ganus Greenwood Blue Jays 2011

Sydney Ganus, Greenwood Blue Jays (2011)

The Greenwood Blue Jays will field a young team that will also rely on some incoming freshmen. The team lost three senior starters, all in critical roles in the middle – Maddy Esther (currently playing at D3 Rhodes College), Maddy Smith and Caroline Jansen. There is one senior returning starter, Sydney Ganus (defender) last seen doing yeoman work in the District Final loss to Catholic, including clearing a sure goal by heading it out off the line. She’s joined by Sara Cook (11th grade), the twins Mary Margaret Kirkman (10th grade) and Anna Grace Kirkman (10th grade) along with Annabelle Chaffin (11th grade) in offering leadership for the young team. There are several freshman prospects that are expected make a difference including Anna Turner (defender), Kelsey Nau (midfielder) and Anna Martinez (yes, Alex’s sister from Glendale) at midfield. The most critical item will be identifying a goalkeeper for this team that had approximately two dozen out Thursday evening. Head Coach Chris Shull is being assisted by former Drury Panther Ally Reynolds this year.

How about the defending District and State Champion Springfield Catholic Fightin’ Irish? The Senior Class, led by midfielder Natalie Smid, is in my estimation the group that is most responsible for the regular run to State that has marked this program recently. They will be shooting for their 3rd straight trip to the Final 4 this season and a 2nd straight title. The most significant change for the team will be the loss of senior goalkeeper Rachel Scott. Scott, who has been accepted to Yale and has her sights set on a career in neurological surgery, is focused on preparing for that career this season.

The good news is that junior Megan Goetzinger, who split time in goal with Scott last season and was recognized with Rachel as 2nd Team All-State GK’s, returns and now takes charge in the net. She’ll have 1st All-State defenders Carsen Baron and Rebecca Mayus fronting her which is a plethora of riches any Coach in the region would enjoy. Add a pair of D2 college signee’s in Andrea Parker and Shelby Hatz, who will continue their careers at Drury in the Fall, and the Irish should continue their winning ways. Check out my earlier story for additional impact players.

There were over 50 players at practice on Thursday but it wasn’t a complete contingent as junior Bekah Bade (who scored the game-winner in the title game last June) among others was missing with the basketball season just ending. There are two freshman to keep an eye on going into this season as well. Nicole Ortega joins her sister Emily and Lydia Holtman follows in the footsteps of her All-Star sister Elle who is a senior at Rockhurst. With a senior class of 12, Coach Timson will need to find a balance that helps prepare the underclassmen for next year. A tough problem to have, he’s being assisted this year by Sarah Linsin and Jordan Reppell from Missouri State. Pretty nice role models when you can drive by a billboard and say – hey, there’s my coach!

Jordan Reppell Named to the NSCAA All-Region First Team

From the Bear’s website: Missouri State women’s soccer senior defender Jordan Reppell was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Performance Subaru All-Great Lakes Region first team, it was announced today. It is the second-consecutive year that Reppell has been on the All-Region squad as she was a third teamer in 2009.

Reppell earned Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors after leading a Bears’ defense to eight shutouts and a team goals against average of 0.96 in 2010. She was also named to the All-MVC first team this season, becoming just the fourth MSU player to earn all-conference accolades every year of a four-year career.

Overtime Penalty Kick Ends Women’s Soccer Season in MVC Championship Match

OMAHA, Neb. – The Missouri State women’s soccer team (10-6-3, 4-1-1) battled the top-seeded Creighton Bluejays (15-3-2, 5-1-0) into overtime of the MVC Tournament Championship match in Omaha, Neb. on Sunday afternoon. Creighton’s Erin Gunther scored on a penalty kick in the 98th minute to give the Bluejays the title and a 2-1 win.

Tara Bailes hit crossbar with Bears’ first shot in the 11th minute of play. Missouri State would record the first four shots in the match. But Creighton’s Beth Fyles converted a fast break for the Bluejays in the 25th minute to put MSU in a 0-1 hole.

Missouri State had the better play in the first half. The Bears outshot the Jays seven to four in the half. Despite allowing two corners to Creighton, the MSU defense was stout for most of the period.

The Bears kept on the pressure registering four of the first six shots in the second half. In the 74th minute, the match would take on a new perspective. Freshman Ashley Washburn received a feed from Nia Williams. Washburn drilled a bending shot into the upper left corner of the net to bring the match all-square at a goal apiece. The goal was Washburn’s first collegiate tally.

The teams headed to overtime tied at 1-1, where Jessica Teahan made arguably her best save of the season. She had to change directions and make a diving stop on a deflection of an Emily Orbell shot in the 97th minute. All told, Teahan made six saves in the match for the Bears.

The Bears outshot Creighton 15 to 12 in the match. Tara Bailes led the way for MSU with four shots. Katelyn Frederickson, Tiffany Laughlin, Shelby Stewart and Washburn tallied two shots apiece.

The MVC Tournament Finals appearance was the Bears fourth in team history. Missouri State reached the finals in 1999, 2000 and 2001, winning the title in 2000. It was the Bears’ seventh overtime match of the year and second-straight in this year’s MVC Tournament.

Jordan Reppell, Nia Williams and Jessica Teahan were named to the MVC All-Tournament team for Missouri State.

Missouri State women’s soccer players Jordan Reppell and Jessica Teahan were named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District VII second team. Teahan, who holds a cumulative grade point average of 3.81, is a junior social work major. Reppell holds a 3.61 cumulative GPA as a senior entertainment management major.

Reppell was named to the Academic All-MVC first team and an NSCAA All-Midwest Region third teamer in 2009. She also earned All-MVC first team honors in 2009 and 2008 and second-team accolades in 2007. She was an MVC All-Freshman team member in 2007. Reppell scored her first career goal, the game-winner, on October 3 against SIU Edwardsville. She earned her second career MVC Defensive Player of the Week award on October 4, 2010.

Teahan earned Academic All-MVC and All-MVC first team honors in 2009. She was named MVC Defensive Player of the Week twice that year. She owns a 0.86 career goals against average, the best mark in MSU history. Teahan also ranks in the top-five in every other goalkeeper statistic for her Missouri State career.

The Bears will travel to Omaha, Neb., as the No. 2-seed in the MVC Tournament. Missouri State will face Illinois State in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. It is the 15th straight season that MSU has competed in the MVC Tournament.

Jordan Reppell Gets Late Game Winner For Bears

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Missouri State women’s soccer team (8-4-1, 2-0-0) got another late goal to defeat visiting SIU Edwardsville (7-3-1) on Sunday afternoon at Plaster Field with a 1-0 shutout.

Senior Jordan Reppell (pictured), who takes most of the Bears’ set pieces, took a free kick from just outside of the 18-yard box in the 80th minute. She chipped the ball over the SIUE wall and past a surprised Cougar goalkeeper on a quick restart into the right side of the net. The goal was Reppell’s first career goal.

Missouri State registered 14 shots in the match, nine on net. Brooke Williams again led the team taking three shots, all on net. Tara Bailes and Michelle Sommer added two shots apiece. The Bears decided to split goalkeeper time again on Sunday. Jessica Teahan started and made two saves, including a diving stop in the final seconds of the first half to keep the match scoreless. Chelsea Voet entered the match in the 60th minute and made four saves to preserve the shutout and get the win. It was the Bears’ sixth shutout of the season.

“They (SIUE) gave us a great challenge today,” head coach Rob Brewer said after the match. “They are having a great season so far. I am happy to get the win and glad that we put together two good games on the weekend.”

Missouri State will play the next two matches on the road, at Illinois State next Sunday (Oct. 10) and at Drake on October 17 with both matches starting at 1:00 p.m. The Bears return home on October 22 to face conference-rival Creighton at 7:00 p.m. MSU will finish out the regular season at home on October 28 at 7:00 p.m. against Evansville.

Brewer Wins His 200th, Missouri State Lady Bears Face TN-Martin Sunday

The Missouri State women’s soccer team (1-1-0) opened the home regular season schedule with a convincing 3-0 win over visiting UALR (0-3-0) Friday night at Plaster Field. Freshman Tiffany Laughlin scored twice, including the game winner, to give head coach Rob Brewer his 200th career head women’s soccer coaching victory.

“Our offense was much better tonight,” said Brewer. “We were able to connect better on our serves and we got a lot of pressure on their defense. We have good athletes up front and it proved to be successful tonight.”

The Bears got on the board in the 26th minute when Christine Cross hit a streaking Brooke Williams up the left side. Williams dribbled to the edge of the box and found a wide open Laughlin who drilled the ball into the empty net.

Missouri State doubled its lead in the 41st minute when freshman Shelby Stewart centered a pass and Rachel Weimer headed it into an open net.

The Lady Bears were clearly the better squad tonight, seen from the pre-game warmup and throughout the game. The Trojans were a disciplined team led by midfield Jacqueline Paz. The team defended in numbers and had a clear idea of how they were going to advance the ball and it all started with Paz. While the Bears never adjusted tactically to that situation, they were able to beat UALR with their team speed and technical skills. That advantage was most clear when the midfield included Grace Cross and Kathleen Kujawa in the middle, flanked by Katelyn Fredrickson and Brooke Williams. That’s three freshman and a sophomore (Cross) so it might take some time for that lineup to solidify it’s role on the team but that’s my expectation.

The back line is set with senior Jordan Reppell, featured on this years poster, along with Sarah Linsin who moves into the middle to join her. Nia Williams starts her second year on the outside right and junior Christine Cross, Grace’s sister, holds down the left outside position. Jennifer Hamlin is the backup.

Up front, sophomore Rachel Weimer is the key to this team. Her work rate on both offense and defense will help take pressure off of the midfield but it’s her ability to break down defenses with her speed and go-to-goal mentality that creates the greatest opportunity. Freshman Tiffany Laughlin was the primary beneficiary last night, but Jessica Roberts (Mt Grove/SSC) and Shelby Stewart (Parkview/SSC) will get plenty of minutes, allowing Head Coach Brewer the opportunity to go with the hot hand. Stewart also moved to outside midfield briefly which gives the Bears three fleet wing midfielders capable of creating havoc.

This could be another quality season or it will turn into a growing season as the freshman learn the realities of Missouri Valley Conference play. I’m looking forward to seeing it develop.

The Bears host Tennessee-Martin on Sunday at 1:00 pm on Sunday at Plaster Stadium. Tenn-Martin played Arkansas State to a 2-2 double-overtime tie at the ASU Soccer Complex last Sunday. The Red Wolves outshot the Skyhawks 18-16 including taking 12 shots on goal to UTM’s nine.

Additional photos will follow tonight or tomorrow.

The Missouri State Bears are picked to finish third in the Missouri Valley Conference according to the preseason poll released by the conference today. Defending champion Illinois State was picked to win the conference again with Creighton chosen ahead of Missouri State. The Bears garnered 36 points, one behind Creighton (37) and 10 behind Illinois State (46).

The preseason All-MVC squad was also announced by the Valley today. Three Missouri State players, Jordan Reppell, Jessica Teahan and Rachel Weimer, were selected to the team. Teahan and Reppell were first-team All-MVC honorees last season, while Weimer was named to the All-MVC second team and MVC All-Freshman team. NOTE – the list is only 11 players, with Teahan the only goalkeeper selected, Reppell (pictured) one of only three defenders while Weimer is part of a group of six forwards. Exclusive company for the Lady Bears. Read more here.

Missouri State will open exhibition play next Monday, August 16, with a 6:00 p.m. tilt against Central Missouri and host Drury at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 19. The Bears regular season home opener is set for Friday, August 27 at 7:00 p.m. against UALR. As always, the schedule can be found on my calendar in the right sidebar. If you’re paying attention at home, you’re probably confused right about now. The headline points to a Bears loss, but the photo shows the home team in white celebrating a goal. What gives?

I can be a harsh critic, and it’s especially difficult to restrain myself when I feel like a lone voice in the wilderness when it comes to covering the college game in the region. Not reprinting press releases from the office of the college SID, but getting out and evaluating programs and players. I’m not an expert, although having this soap box will often give you the impression that I might be. I do pride myself on having informed discussions with the coaches about their players and the programs however. Played the game, coached the game, managed teams and leagues. But my white hair also means I understand there will be differences of opinion.

I really enjoyed tonight’s game. The Bear’s gave up 3 goals in the 1st half, the first on a mistake by goalie Jackie Jasper (the 2nd one in 4 years darn it), the next two a pair of beautiful goals you expect a Top 20 program to score. The thing is, the Bears played with heart. They came back and scored a goal late in the 1st half. They won’t accomplish anything this year unless they are getting dirty and going down in collisions regularly. Accomplished.

More importantly, they showed the ability to learn and respond. The second half was one of the more entertaining games I have enjoyed, and I want to see more.

It started from the back as Kellie Jensen and Jordan Reppell apparently determined they could get to every pass in their area of responsibility. That attitude took hold throughout the lineup and every ball was contested. The other thing I noticed is that this team is beginning to understand where their teammates are going to be. Runs were made in anticipation, off of the ball, and it opened up opportunities for Samantha Aguilar, Allie Osmundson and the other 7 midfielders to make plays. Once they did that, KU no longer was able to run at them with ease and it became a more balanced game.

Not one the Bears are necessarily going to win but when coaches talk about playing the tough games now in order to be prepared for the post-season, this is the game they are talking about. It’s something I want to see more of, and it’s something you should show your daughters and your sons.

As a final note, the Bears were apparently sorely disappointed with themselves and their play after this game was over. I measure that by the extended team conversation held post-game, and the conversations I had after wards. I’m glad they want more. So do I. In November in particular.
