Kiester became the head coach at Missouri S&T prior to the 2005 season – the Lady Miners’ first as a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference – after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Oregon and Baylor University. He is returning to the state where he played collegiately and earned his Bachelor’s degree, as he graduated from Hawai’i Pacific University in 1994.
“Jon has done a great job with the program,” said S&T director of athletics Mark Mullin. “We are sorry to see him leave but we wish him well in his new position. We have seen the program improve during his tenure.
“He is leaving the program in a solid state and I look forward to finding the right individual to successfully lead the S&T women’s soccer program in the future,” Mullin added.
Kiester inherited a team that had won only three games in 2004, but the team made improvement during his tenure and was in contention for a playoff spot in the final weekend of each of the last two seasons in the competitive GLVC. In addition to his work at Missouri S&T, Keister also worked with the Missouri ODP program, most recently acting as an assistant for the Missouri 1993 girls team that reached the national finals. Prior to that he was head coach for a team that also reached the finals.
I always enjoyed the opportunities I had to talk soccer with Jon. As a former Hawaii resident myself, I know the lure to return, if for no other reason than to be a bit warmer on the sideline than the photo above from a Drury game last year. Good luck Coach!
