Joe Curti, Carthage (2011) signing with IASA

Joe Curti (Carthage) and Jackson Patillo (Willard) have committed to attend Richmond, The American International University of London. at the Leeds England campus and will play Soccer for The International Academic and Soccer Academy (IASA). Joe and Jackson are teammates on Springfield SC as well as the Missouri State ODP program.

The opportunity to move to the UK and play year round came as a result of their ODP activities. Curti and Patillo played in front of RIASA Director of Coaching Mark Ellis against two English Professional Academy Teams when the 93 Missouri ODP squad traveled to the UK in the Summer of 2010. The boys won their game against 2nd Division Marcambe’s Academy 3-2 in a game played at Blackburn Rovers Academy Grounds. The ODP Coach, John Roeslein, is pictured in the signing photos (suit and tie).

Jackson Patillo, Willard (2011) signing with IASA

Jackson Patillo, Willard (2011) signing with IASA

During the trip all the players were able to visit the RIASA Stadium, Training Grounds and visited with Vice President of Richmond “The American International” University in London – Mark Kopenski. Mr. Kopenski introduced the partnership between Richmond and IASA. Also on hand was David Baldwin the IASA CEO.

Joe finishes his carear at Carthage as the all time leader in assists, points, and is tied for most goals. He was a 4 year starter and he has his honors listed in his player profile that I’ve attached. Jackson will be working on an International Business degree and included in his curriculum at RIASA he can graduate with a UEFA Soccer Coaching License.

RIASA players will play a full year round schedule against many of England’s Professional Academy Teams. The team will also play in one of the English Men’s Leagues which can help them qualify for the FA Cup. All RIASA players will receive a student work permit. This will allow some of the very best in the Academy, to move on to some of the professional ranks in England. One this semester at RIASA has signed a pro contract with Carlisle a 1 division team.

The IASA/Richmond Program

The International Academic and Soccer Academy allows students the best of both worlds: a top quality academic program while living and playing in a true soccer culture. The UK is a natural fit for the North American and international soccer players, both culturally and for exposure to the best league in the world. It may provide an exit route into the professional game, for students, as they will be continually showcased against top professional academies. US college soccer provides a very limited experience and developmental opportunity for students to reach their true potential. NCAA and NAIA rules restrict the playing season and times players can play, be coached, and develop their game. At The International Academic and Soccer Academy, IASA/Richmond students can fully develop their playing potential and still receive a top quality professional education.

Campus in Leeds, UK

The IASA site is located in the Metropolitan Area of West Yorkshire near the major cities of Leeds, Bradford, Manchester, and Sheffield and is considered one of the top university areas in all of the UK with over 100,000 students calling the area home. Leeds lies halfway on the train route between London and Edinburgh, Scotland. Leeds and the metro region have well over a million inhabitants and is a thriving cultural destination. Leeds is a city rich in culture, architecture and attractions and is consistently ranked by popular culture magazines as one of the UK’s favorite cities. Leeds is packed with museums, shopping centers, restaurants and a busy night life, which combine to enhance the students’ university experience and make for a perfect setting for university study and world class soccer.

Class 3 District Playoffs – Chiefs, Falcons, Tigers, Eagles, Bulldogs, Bruins!

#1 Kickapoo Chiefs – 4
#4 Ozark Tigers – 1
The Tigers broke through first, when sr Michael Headlee scored through a crowd on the corner kick. The Chief’s got the game-tying goal from Aaron Strunk when Hunter Durham’s run into the box was broken up Strunk was there to bury the loose ball in the 33rd. The game-winner was scored in the final minute of the 1st half when Durham was hip-checked off the ball, going to the ground inside the box. Senior Nate Lavoy, as he has all season, calmly buried the resulting PK despite having to take it twice as the first one was waved off by encroachment by a teammate prior to his first kick.

The final goal was scored by… The Tigers came close on several occasions but as they have all season, the Chief’s defense is resilient and Tyler Moses is rounding into post-season form, with diving saves like this.

#2 Glendale Falcons – 5 (PKs)
#3 Nixa Eagles - 4
The Nixa Eagles discovered some mojo tonight and his name is Robert Neathery. Scoring three goals for the Eagles, before going out late in the match with an injury, it appeared the boys team were destined to repeat the heights reached by the girls program in the Spring. It was not to be however as the Falcon’s clawed their way back into the game, finally equalizing in the 77th minute on sophomore Evan Garrad’s 30 yard blast that found the upper 90 (see below).

Alec Martinez moved into 3rd on the Glendale single season scoring list with his two goals. He now has 23, passing Josh Keisker who is now assistant coach.

Sep 23rd Games – Catholic Subdues Tigers

Catholic at Carthage, Harvest Moon on 1st Day of Fall

Catholic at Carthage, Harvest Moon on 1st Day of Fall

Carthage Tigers – 0
Springfield Catholic – 5
The Harvest Moon shone most brightly tonight on the visitors as the Fightin’ Irish took advantage of the Tiger’s willingness to go toe-to-toe, using their disciplined approach to breaking down the defense. Catholic got their first goal only 3 minutes into the match from Luke Strauss. To the Tiger’s credit, their response was positive and motivated as they worked hard to move the ball across the field and into the offensive end although it took 15 minutes before goalkeeper Levi Millsap would be tested.

The game was a lively affair as both teams got into a running game but once Coach Joe Kofron had a chance to chat with his starters, they focused on slowing down the game and running their offense. It led to two late goals, first by freshman Ryan Randell, getting his first varsity goal from a set piece, pouncing on the 40 yard ball into the box when it fell to him. In the final minute of the first half, sr Taylor Arens stepped in front of a pass at midfield and was given too much space as he came forward, finally unleashing a shot from 25 yards that found the bottom right corner, slipping under goalkeeper Ludin Gonzalez’s diving save attempt. Two additional goals in the second provided the final margin.

View photos from the game

While a skilled team, the Tiger’s were reminded tonight what playoff soccer looks like and they will need to find a way to make better use of striker Joe Curti who had limited touches until moving back into the midfield. The Irish offense looks to be the most potent in the region, regardless of class, but Kickapoo, Glendale and possibly Nixa are all looking for post-season success and Carthage will need to begin preparing now for playoff soccer. Unless they want this to be their third straight year finishing in the Sectional game.

Carthage faces Willard on Tuesday, one of two challengers along with Joplin for the District 12 crown the Tigers hope to capture again.

Carthage, the top-ranked Class 3 program in Southwest Missouri, hosts the Irish tonight, probably the best team in the region regardless of class. This could be the bragging rights game of the season.

Cody Dyer at the Carthage Press offers a look at the Carthage Tigers aim for third-straight district title

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Although the Tigers have captured successive district championships, second-year Carthage High School boys soccer coach Jacob Osborne expressed cautious optimism about the upcoming season.

Despite eight starters returning from last year’s impressive 17-6 season, the atmosphere around the practice field for the Tigers has changed. Not only did the Tigers lose seven talented players to graduation, the power of the Central Ozark Conference appears to strengthening.

“Our schedule this year is significantly more difficult than years past,” Osborne said. “We were able to pick up Glendale, which is traditionally one of the top two or three teams in our region. We have also added a tournament at Kickapoo that features many of the top teams from the area along with some teams from Kansas City and St. Louis.”

At halftime, tied as Kaleb Romero (pictured in white) scores from the spot after Khai Uyen Huynh is taken down in the box. The Jays tied it late in the half when Chris Aiken was waiting at the far post for Devon Whitlock’s set piece from the far left.

The game went to PKs following a scoreless 2nd half and two 5 min OT periods. Nixa beat Greenwood 2-1 as Kaleb Romero and Robert Neathery converted their shots and goalie Mason Young stopped the last two attempts. Goalie Hawken Thieme was responsible for several important saves in the game, including a diving stop midway thru the 1st half, to keep the Jays close. An entertaining game, both teams will so well this year.

By the way, Jennifer Robinette sang the anthem for the Eagles game and it gave me chills, combined with the moment of silence for 9/11. The lady has some pipes!

Midwest Regional League Games In Springfield MO

The Midwest Regional League (MRL), who’s mission is to provide the highest standard of competitive play for youth teams in US Youth Soccer Region II (the Midwest Region) and to assure the continued growth and development of elite level players, brought the Boys U-16 First Division West Red to town. Hosted by Springfield SC, the games are being played at Plaster Sports Complex at Missouri State University.

The Springfield SC squad is essentially a HS sophomore select squad that currently sits in 2nd place. First place is currently held by Lou Fusz Kaver which is coached by recent Missouri State graduate Andy Cooper, pictured in blue below before the start of their game this morning.

MRL Soccer: Springfield SC hosts FC UnitedFC United (North suburbs, Chicago) – 1
Springfield Soccer Club – 1
SSC took an early lead on a corner kick in the 11th minute. The corner kick was knocked out by FC United but Taylor Arens collected it and put it back in. Alec Martinez (Glendale) took the high ball off his chest, settled it in front and was allowed to make a run into the box where he buried his shot to the far side. Unfortunately for the home side, United came back 4 minutes later on a wonderful goal by Miguel Cortez. The striker (#18) caused problems throughout the game with his tricky play and he made them pay this time. He made a run down the right before being able to cut inside and shake his defender before scoring against the run of play.

While SSC had the majority of play in the first half, it was United that came out and established the tempo in the second. Except for a goal line clearance by Joe Curti (#20) for SSC, there would have been no point from this game. SSC had two good opportunities, one in the first with Martinez missing an open header from a set piece that found him unmarked at the back post. In the 2nd, a square ball through the six yard box, after an excellent individual effort by #8 on the left side, somehow went through untouched.

9/22 Southwest Missouri High School Soccer Report

Camdenton Lakers host Sedalia Smith-Cotton

Camdenton Lakers – 7
Sedalia Smith-Cotton – 1
In a game that indicates how strong the competitive juices flow between these teams, despite the move out of District 9 by Camdenton, these Central Missouri squads went at each other hard from the opening kick off. After seeing the Lakers a 2nd time now this season, the key element I see is a willingness across the entire team to go to the ball and challenge every play. It’s like watching a high-pressure EPL game as they force their opponents to play quickly or defend their attack.

The Laker’s got the lead in the 18th minute from a corner kick when #2 Drew Whitney, redirected the ball that fell to him and just over the outreached arms of the goalkeeper. Smith-Cotton thought they had tied the game in the 32nd minute only to see the goal called back for offsides.

I headed home at halftime, having stopped on the way home from a business meeting in Columbia. The second half featured a hat trick by Rayder Bennett, a brace from Jeff Moffitt and one by Nate Buttrum.

Sedalia graduated 10 starters on last years District Championship team but have a pair of talented midfielders leading the way. We’ll check back in on District 9 later this season.

New Covenant Academy Warriors – 5
Thomas Jefferson – 1

Greenwood Blue Jays – 2 (PKs)
Bolivar Liberators – 1
Greenwood would dominate the first half of play even though the Liberators got on the board first when Bradley Stillwagon finished an assist from Matt Magana. Greenwood would tie the game with six minutes to go in the first half. No more goals in regulation, with the Jay’s getting the win on the 4th PK.

Carthage Tigers – 10
Aurora Houn ‘Dawgs – 0
Carthage goals by Phillip Devillers (3), Cole Beckham (2), Joe Curti (2), Lorenzo Salas, Christian Solis and Jose Lopez.

Cassville Wildcats – 10

Willard Tigers – 0
The Cub’s avenge their loss this weekend at the hands of the Tigers, who won by a similar margin en route to winning the Cub’s Tournament.

The Bulldogs led 2-0 at the half after goals by Stefan Klute, unassisted, and Logan Landis on a penalty kick. Jordan Blevins scored on a penalty kick for Neosho in the 62nd for the final margin.

Thursday Game Reports – Carlos Reyes Scores Branson Pirates First Goal

Cassville Wildcats – 10
Branson Pirates – 2
The Wildcats opened the defense of their District title with senior Uziel Franco netting 6 goals. Bryan Schroder, BJ Mcguffey and Nashe Lugeanbeal all scored as well. The Pirates first ever Varsity match included a pair of goals, both scored on set pieces, by Garegin Elchyn and Carlos Reyes with Marcelo Romero earning an assist. The historic first goal? Carlos Reyes scored on a header off of a beautifully served free kick from Marcello Romero

Carthage Tigers – 2
Carl Junction Bulldogs – 0
The Bulldogs open the season on their new artificial surface but Carthage doesn’t cooperate. The first half was a back and forth game and scoreless. The first goal came via a corner kick by Christian Solis, headed in by Joe Curti. The second goal was a PK by Cole Beckham after Matt Robinson was pulled down in the box. The Carthage Press offers more.

Glendale Falcons – 4
Ozark Tigers – 1
The Falcon’s spoil Ozark’s home opener on the new artificial pitch while opening with two wins in District 11. Goals were scored by Hunter Horton, Devon Newport, Alec Martinez and Ryan Partch for the Falcons. The Tigers goal was scored by Zach Moore late in the 1st half when the Tigers were down 0-3.

Waynesville Tigers – 3
Sullivan – 0
Sullivan’s defense held until the 69th minute when Brandon Kilthau scored for the Tigers, assisted by Ben Moore. They got two more, from Eric Iverson in the 70th via a corner from Kyle
Varner and Patrick Sweetsir, from Chris Beaudioun in the 77th.
