Springfield Represents At Region 2 – The Arbiter’s

Springfield Referees

Congratulations to the crew from Springfield who were chosen to represent and earned their way to Sioux Falls, SD this past week. This team was part of the the fun, and success, of playing and working at the highest levels.

Back Row – Patrick Burns and Ryan Cooksey
Front Row – Alysan Burgbacher, Mark Lassman-Eul, Andy Wilkinson and Jessica McCutcheon

Update – Patrick, Ryan, and Andy all worked semi finals on Tuesdays. Only one missouri referee got a final due to so many teams from missouri being in the finals.

It was the first trip to Regionals for Alysan, a high school senior-to-be at New Covenant where she will play on the boys team this season, along with Jessica, who will be a sophomore at Rogers State (OK). The group was also joined by Jeff Kohlmeyer and Kelly Ross who worked as an assigner and a mentor, respectively.

College Report – Represent!

Jessica McCutcheon (Kickapoo 2008) got her first start of the season, earning the shutout with 5 saves as the Rogers State Hillcats won 4-0 over Our Lady of the Lake University.

TJ Martin (Webb City 2008) scored in the Hillcats 5-0 win over Bacone in the home opener.

From the Fulton Sun – Junior midfielder Hayley Christensen (Camdenton 2006) and freshman midfielder Melissa Roewe both scored two goals Tuesday as the William Woods University Lady Owls smothered Culver-Stockton College 8-3. Freshman forward Alisha Morice (Camdenton 2008) also tallied goals for William Woods (2-0).

David Haberstock (Waynesville 2006) has started all 3 games this season for the William Wood Owls, after joining them after 2 years at Barton County CC. The team tied Central Methodist 3-3 (2OT) to open the season, then defeated Culver-Stockton 3-0.

Tom Marlow (Parkview 2007) and his Illinois Wesleyan Fightin’ Titan teammates have been picked to finish 4th in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin preseason coaches’ poll. The Titans (6-11-1 overall, 4-3 in the CCIW in 2007), lost their home opener August 29th 2-1 in overtime to Illinois-Springfield who beat the Missouri S&T Miners Sunday.. They had a tough weekend, losing to Transylvania and Centre. Marlow is a regular starter, getting the call in all three games this season.

Parents and Players – I cover items that hit my radar screen which includes updates sent by players and parents. Don’t be shy, with the number of players there are to track these days there is no way I can do it myself. Send a short note, with links to game stories or the season statistics page. Photos are even better! I’ll also be trying to do Conference coverage as the season progresses, with GLVC, MIAA, HAAC and SLIAC near the top of the list.

There’s A New Sheriff In Town News

Final week of the regular season and you know what that means, eh folks. That’s right…

Waynesville visits Catholic on Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 pm. The Varsity play first and we’ll have a chance to see the two teams that have beaten Kickapoo and Glendale this season. It will also be one of your last chances to see Katie Pritchard with a ball at her feet, since next October she’ll be playing roundball for the Panthers. She’s a goal away from claiming second in career scoring in Missouri, and number one in large school scoring. And both teams are gearing up for the State Playoffs and this is a great way to send a message.

There’s one other game of note this week that needs no introduction. The Glendale Falcons visit Kickapoo on Wednesday for their Ozark Conference match up. The Chief’s lost 0-4 in early April as sophomore Lindsey Sprouse had a hat-trick in the Falcon’s shutout. Kickapoo will be without Jessica McCutcheon in goal due to injury (their 5th starter to go down) but the rivalry is strong. There will be a crowd out to cheer on both teams.

Springfield Soccer ClubCongratulations go out to the Springfield SC who had two teams advance to the semifinals this weekend at the Missouri State Cup. The U13 boys won their first two games ever in achieving that goal, before losing to a Scott Gallagher team yesterday morning. UPDATE – Got to call you on this sentence!! The U13 division is the youngest age group at state cup. The U13 team won their first two games at Cup and got to the semifinal…the first time ever a U13 team from SGF has done that (including current U17s). BTW the U17 game was won by one of the best shots you’ll ever see anywhere, an absolute corker straight into the top corner through a penalty box of defenders, by Tim Griffin from about 25 yards out. The U17 boys, defending State Champions, defeated Scott Gallagher in OT to advance to the Final again this year. It will be played this Saturday at 3:00 pm at the SLYSA Fields in St Charles, MO. I’ll be there to cover the story and celebrate Mother’s Day with my Mom. It’s also my Dad’s birthday on Saturday so lot’s of good reasons to be in St Louis rather than Springfield.

I mention that in advance of reminding you that Saturday is also the home opener for the Springfield Demize. I normally make the Professional Development League (PDL) games a priority but I’ve got a a conflict this weekend :) I think they are a great opportunity to see some quality soccer with future professional players you’ll be able to say “I remember when…”

Southwest Soccer All StarsWe’re in the final stages of the Southwest All-Star game as well. As noted earlier, I’m out seeing as many games as possible as part of the evaluation process. We anticipate making the announcement of the Girls Roster by Wednesday May 14th.

If your Booster Club or business would like to recognize the players that will be represented and support our efforts to bring you this game, please contact me so I can provide information on placing an ad in the Program. Thanks Folks, see you at the pitch!

Kickapoo Shootout Day One

St Teresa Academy Stars vs Jackson Indians at Kickapoo ShootoutSt Teresa Academy Stars – 3
Jackson Indians - 1
Providing a compelling example of the quality available this weekend, the #2 state-ranked STA Stars fell behind in the 6th minute this evening. The #13 ranked Jackson Indians took the early lead on a goal by sophomore Hanna Roach, a well struck ball that found the far side netting from just inside the box. It came as a result of classic Indian play, strong and direct, especially important playing into the strong wind that chilled everyone this evening. While surprised, the Stars were non-plussed and slowly began to impose themselves on the game. With a pair of Notre Dame bound seniors in Ellen Jantsch (pictured heading the ball, #9 in black) and Molly Campbell, the tools were in place.

The Indians were not backing down however, not with 1st team All-State and SEMO signee Chelsea Dale in central defense. It was the 27th minute before the Stars equalized. It came directly from Campbell’s corner kick as she curved a ball into the far side of the net, taking advantage of the wind with her strike. Two more goals in the second earned the Stars the win and the opportunity to face the #14th ranked Oakville Tigers at 11:30 am Saturday.

Sedalia Smith-Cotton Tigers – 1
Kickapoo Chiefs – 0
The dropping temperatures paled in the face of a difficult loss for the host Chiefs this evening. Missing senior captain Chealsey Russell due to injury, Kickapoo were still able to create opportunities this evening but were once again unable to capitalize. Freshman McKenna Adams, earning extra minutes because of the injury, came close early. Katy McLain’s simple ball sent her into the six yard box, only saved by a courageous dive by the GK. Smith-Cotton, alma mater of Chiefs Head Coach Phil Hodge, were most dangerous when sophomore Jessica Greer found space. In the 75th minute, freshman Tiffany Wehmeyer split the defense with a diagonal ball from the left wing and while GK Jessica McCutcheon alertly came off the line, it was the Chiefs that ended up on the ground after the challenge while Greer picked up the loose ball and slotted it into the open net. Greer and Wehmeyer are a potent combination.

Oakville Tigers – 4
KC O’Hara Celtics – 0
The Class 1 Celtics faced off against the large school opponent but were unable to match the firepower available.

Lafayette Lancers – 4
Raytown South Cardinals – 0
The Lancers, Quarterfinalists last year who lost in OT to eventual champion Zumwalt West, took a 1 goal lead into the half before opening things up in the second half for the final margin.

Glendale Falcons – 3
Jefferson City Jays – 1
The surging Falcons faced off against the #12th ranked Jays at Cooper, getting a pair of goals from sophomore Lindsey Sprouse and one from Emily Cline. Senior captains Lorin Opfer and Megan Garrad provided the assists.

Notre Dame
Liberty Jays -

Gibault (IL) – 2
Rogers (AR) Mounties – 1

Monday’s Girls Soccer Results

Kickapoo Chiefs host Nixa EaglesKickapoo Chiefs – 6
Nixa Eagles – 0
At the 50 minute mark, senior Chealsey Russell scored her 3rd goal of the evening, from a long ball by goalkeeper Jessica McCutcheon. It was emblematic of the new lineup Coach Hodge has decided on , moving last years Regional MVP up top where her impact on the game can more directly affect Kickapoo’s early inability to score this season. The Eagles, a young and very active squad, kept it close until the 25th when Abby Anderson scored. It came in traditional Chiefs fashion, a wonderful cross from Katy McLain on the left side, GK touched it but was unable to stop it and Anderson was alertly waiting on the far side where she walked it in. Russell got her first goal a minute later when freshman McKenna Adams alertly sent her in on a breakaway via a diagonal ball. Once again the keeper got a hand on it but Russell had enough power on the ball that it trickled in. The Chief’s got a third goal, Russell’s second, in the first half via a corner kick.

Both keepers, McCutcheon for Kickapoo and Kristen Miller for Nixa (pictured above), were active and made important saves during the game. The Eagle’s worked hard, and knew what they needed to do against their District foe. With a core of freshman that achieved well in last Spring’s Middle School playoffs, it’s just a matter of time before the breaks should begin to go their way.

Camdenton Lakers
– 10
Central Bulldogs – 0
Soccer Lady Lakers’ F Megan Manzer found the back of the net four times and F Alisha ‘Girdy’ Morice tapped in the 600th goal in the program’s history Monday in a 10-0 shutout of Springfield Central.

Bolivar Liberators – 2
Willard Tigers – 1
I know Bolivar won, I think it was by the score listed. Willard scored first, from Missouri Valley signee Patsy Middleton, with Julie Magana and Jordan Halbrooke scoring for the Liberators.

Greenwood Blue Jays – 4
Joplin McAuley Warriors – 0
The traditional rivals renew acquaintances in the Warriors opening game of the season.

Kickapoo Chiefs Beat Rogers Mountaineers in PKs

Updated – I’ve added the Post Game Interview, Paige Blotter. In Windows Media Format.

Kickapoo Lady Chiefs host Rogers (AR) MountaineersSenior Paige Blotter calmly slotted her PK into the top of the net as the fifth shooter to give her team the much needed win this afternoon. The Chiefs went down 0-3 in the first half before getting a pair of goals late in the half to get back to 2-3. Freshman McKenna Adams tied the game (pictured) when she was waiting on the back half of the goal beat her defender to the loose ball that popped out of the goalkeepers hands on Chealsey Russell’s cross. Her tap in gave the Chiefs their first tie of the season. Her energy on the left wing also created the only lead the Chiefs have had this season when she followed teammate z intowon a ball deep in the left corner. Her back pass was then crossed into the box by Erica Freiert. Russell’s intelligent run allowed her to redirect the ball into the net in front of the GK in the six yard box.

The Mounties tied the game in the 70th minute on a wonderful run by their captain, who slipped past two defenders before slotting the ball to the near post late in the game. The Chiefs threatened but were unable to get the winner in regulation while Jessica McCutcheon withstood several significant challenges in the second half.

After winning Friday by netting 3 of 5 PK’s, the Mounties got goals from the 1st, 2nd and 5th shooter, only to see the Chief’s bury 4 of the 5, including Blotter’s final effort. Pictures and a video interview with Paige will follow.

From the NWArkansas paper

The Lady Mounties (10-3 ) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after the first 10 minutes but the Lady Chiefs rallied. Megan Dougherty had three goals during regulation and Liza Eppley scored the other in the nonconference loss.

Ozarks Conference Play Opens

And it opened with a bang folks. Kickapoo traveled to Lebanon on Wednesday evening to face the Yellowjackets. The game was scoreless after regulation and two overtime periods, leading to penalty kicks under the new rules aimed at avoiding ties in regular season play (not including tournaments)

The Yellowjackets prevailed in PK’s, winning on the 8th kick, to earn the 1-0 win. Stephanie Fore got the winner, putting her shot past the keeper.

The 5th-ranked Yellowjackets take an early lead in the Ozark Conference race :)
