Alec Cochran Competing in South America For US National Team

From the Grapevine Soccer Network website and US Soccer comes the following: Alec (AJ) Cochran, 17, from Ballwin, was recently selected to play for the U18 US National team in 4 games in Argentina and Chile later this month.

AJ will be a senior at CBC and plays club soccer for St. Louis Scott Gallagher’s US Development Academy Team. Last year, AJ was one of only 4 Juniors in Missouri to receive 1st team All-state honors. In May, AJ was selected to play in a USSDA all-star game in Sarasota, FL, bringing together the top 16 players in the country from all USDA teams.

In preparation for playing in South America, Alec has been training with AC St. Louis.

AJ was recently invited by the New York Red Bulls to play in a game called the High School Cup, to be held at the Red Bulls new stadium in New Jersey, recognizing the top HS Seniors in the country in an East – West all-star match. Unfortunately, he will have to decline that offer to represent his country.

The U.S. U-18 Men’s National Team departed for Buenos Aires and Santiago, Chile, on July 21 as head coach Mike Matkovich (fomerly with Chicago Magic and Jeremy Alumbaugh’s boss there) brought 18 players to South America. The U.S. will play matches against a regional select team on July 26, Argentina on July 27 and Chile on July 29 in Santiago.

Jeremy Alumbaugh Joins SIU-Edwardsville Staff

In a move long rumored (I first heard about it in late May) former Missouri State Bear’s assistant and Springfield SC Director Jeremy Alumbaugh has returned to the Missouri Valley Conference. Alumbaugh has joined the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars staff, one of two new members of the MVC. The Cougar’s will visit Springfield on Saturday November 6th for the final regular season home game for the Bears. Might be time to buy a box at Plaster Stadium now for that cold weather match up as the Bear’s will be looking to defend their regular season Conference championship, a title won at home on the last day of the regular season in 2009.

Here’s the formal announcement of Alumbaugh’s hiring

EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. – As Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men’s soccer embarks on its first season in the Missouri Valley, Coach Kevin Kalish has announced the addition of Jeremy Alumbaugh to his coaching staff.

Alumbaugh joins the staff as an assistant coach at a key time in SIUE’s history. The Cougars are fully eligible for the NCAA Division I Championships this season as well as the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

Alumbaugh has a wealth of coaching experience at various levels. He previously was an assistant coach at Missouri State, an assistant coach for the Chicago Fires Reserves of the United Soccer Leagues, a staff coach for the Chicago Magic, and the Director of Soccer Operations for the Springfield (Mo.) Soccer Club.

AC St Louis Face LA Galaxy Tonight In US Open Cup

ST. LOUIS, MO (June 29, 2010) – AC St. Louis of the U.S.S.F. Division II Pro League will face the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer tonight in a third-round match in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Kick-of is set for 9:30 p.m. CT from The Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Fans can follow the action on Match Commentary this evening at www.ac-stlouis.com and at lagalaxy.com.

AC St. Louis has advanced to tonight’s game by registering back-to-back 1-0 road wins over the Des Moines Menace and the NSC Minnesota Stars. Tonight will be the first game this season for the Galaxy in this competition. Major League Soccer teams enter the U.S. Open Cup in the third-round, just as English Premier League teams enter the FA Cup in the third round. Los Angeles has previously won the U.S. Open Cup in 2001 and 2005. The Galaxy have an all-time record of 4-1 in third-round matches.

Tonight’s matchup is one of polar opposites in the standings of professional soccer in the United States. The Los Angeles Galaxy enter tonight’s game with the best record in Major League Soccer, 10-1-3, plus the Galaxy have allowed only four goals throughout their MLS season. Meanwhile, AC St. Louis is at the foot of the U.S.S.F. Division II table with a mark of 2-7-2. However, AC St. Louis has turned their slow start around by recording a 4-3-2 record in all competitions since May 1. Furthermore, St. Louis is unbeaten and un-scored upon in their last four outings.

On a related note, AC St Louis has a new head coach in Dale Schilly who is the man that lured Jeremy Alumbaugh to St Louis. Schilly previously has overseen the club formerly known as Metro United, now St. Louis Scott Gallagher Illinois, for the past 15 years. Schilly has 14 years of experience as a head coach with the Region II Olympic Development program, and has over 25 years of coaching experience at the youth and collegiate levels. This is his first head coaching role with a professional team.

“I was excited about the opportunity to work here in St. Louis, my hometown,” said Schilly. “I want to help develop the pro game in this area. It is something that this community has been starving for quite a while. I am looking forward to helping out.”

Interview With Jeremy Alumbaugh, Springfield SC Director of Operations

Jeremy Alumbaugh

Jeremy Alumbaugh, Springfield SC

I spent some time with Jeremy Alumbaugh, Director of the Springfield SC for the past six years. For those who missed the earlier announcement, Alumbaugh is headed for Collinsville IL where he is now responsible for the St Louis Scott Gallagher Metro Academy U18 team. That’s a mouthful and I’m going to dive into those details in a follow up conversation, along with some background on the US Development Academy, the top tier of youth soccer development in the United States. For now, let’s stay local and learn more about Jeremy and the Springfield Soccer Club.

Jeremy returned to Springfield in 2004 to take the Director of Soccer Operations role now filled by Alumbaugh’s friend, former MSU coach Eric Sorlie, of the newly created club. Formed from the merger of Springfield Premier (Kinne), Carl Rose Academy and Tracker SC (Kofron, Carter & Allen), the club has teams for youth 8-18 as well as adult programs for 19-23 year olds. The club has approximately 30 teams across the age groups and 20 coaches that includes a strong relationship with Missouri State and it’s staff.

In the interview below, Jeremy talks about the Club’s achievement’s that he is most proud of. It’s a legacy to his vision and his leadership capabilities as he has pulled together a team that has accomplished all that it has. And as any good leader must, he’s left a team in place that can continue the development of youth players in the Ozarks but we’ll leave that for another interview.

Springfield Soccer Club, 2004-2009

Player Development – from a starting class in 2005 that included Patrick Carver (D3 All-American), Brian Fishback (D2 GLVC Player Athlete of the Year), Josh Florez (D3), Katie Brooks (NAIA), Justin Alford (D1) and Nick Pfeiffer (D2) to a group that included 5 D1 players in 2009, there are now well over 100 alumni who have continued their soccer careers in college. These young men and women return regularly for alumni events and are role models for the youth in the club.
Club Development – working in the model of the largest clubs in the country and across the world, SSC has invested in the community and established their own indoor facility and offices. With a pair of indoor fields as well as an exercise room equipped with current gear, players and their families have a reliable location for training and development. It also provides a home where members can enhance a sense of community among the teams and and offices for the full-time Directors of the Club.

Community
– starting with the creation of the Southwest All-Star game which recognizes high school seniors from over 20 area counties, SSC has expanded their outreach. Whether it’s the Club Banquet that annually attracts 400 families, the 24 hour marathon game that has donated services and over $50K in contributions to regional non-profits in the last three years, or Alumni events that keep former players involved in the club, Springfield SC has offered a full range of services for it’s members.

For more background on Jeremy, here is the bio from the Springfield SC website:

Jeremy Alumbaugh is a former Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach at Missouri State University from 1996-2000. Alumbaugh helped the Bears to national prominence as they made appearances in the NCAA Division I Tournament in 1997 and 1999. He oversaw all recruiting efforts for the Bears. Prior to Missouri State he served as an Assistant Coach at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Alumbaugh played for the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh from 1991-1994 and helped the Titans reach the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 in 1991, Elite 8 in 1993 and the Final Four in 1994. He played at Champaign Centennial High School where he was an All-Conference selection.

Prior to returning to Springfield in 2004 he worked for the Chicago Magic S.C. from 2001-2004 where he coached several teams to National, Regional and State Championships. While in Chicago he also coached the Chicago Fire Reserves of the PDL and helped the franchise win consecutive Division titles. In 2003 he served as the Assistant Coach to Mike Matkovich as they finished as the PDL National Finalist.

During his time in Chicago he worked with several current MLS and US National Team players including; Ricardo Clark, Brad Guzan, Matt Pickens, Ned Grabavoy, Quavas Kirk, Eric Lichaj, Jed Zayner, Danny O’Rourke, Chris Rolfe, Josh Lambo and Dasan Robinson.

Currently, he holds a USSF National ‘C’ License, the NSCAA National Diploma and the NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma. Alumbaugh and his wife Tammy have a daughter Sidney and reside in Springfield.

Jeremy Alumbaugh Joining St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Metro

Alumbaugh with Sorlie, Green at BanquetPress Release – Springfield Soccer Club Announces Changes to Administrative Structure

The Springfield Soccer Club is pleased to announce that beginning January 1, 2010 Eric Sorlie (pictured at left) will be assuming the roles and responsibilities of Director of Soccer Operations. Eric will be responsible for all day-to-day operations of the club both on and off the field. Current Director of Soccer Operations Jeremy Alumbaugh (center) will move into the role of Technical Advisor for the Springfield Soccer Club.

Along with this change is the announcement that Jeremy Alumbaugh has accepted a full-time position with St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Metro. Alumbaugh will serve as the Director of Player Development and Assistant to the Development Academy Director beginning January 1, 2010. “Jeremy will be a tremendous addition to the St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Metro Staff and Program. He was the moving force behind the scenes during the height of the Chicago Magic. After coming to Springfield, he then facilitated the ascendancy of the Springfield Soccer Club to a level of national prominence. He possesses finely honed insights into the game, has keen understanding of the administrative side of the business and develops teams that win.” said Dale Schilly, Program Director for St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Metro.

St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Metro is one of 77 clubs in the country that are members of US Soccer Development Academy which begins its’ third year of competition in September. The Development Academy is focused on improving the every day training environment for elite players, so they can fulfill their potential as international, professional or collegiate soccer players. Clubs in SLSG-Metro’s division include; Colorado Rapids, Colorado Rush, Real Coloroado, Chicago Magic, Sockers FC Chicago, Chicago Fire, FC Milwaukee, St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Missouri and the Kansas City Wizards-Juniors. Development Academy member clubs only compete against each other and do not participate in State Cup or MRL.

Alumbaugh has served as the Director of Soccer Operations for the Springfield Soccer Club since 2004. During that time the club moved into the Midwest Regional League, KC Heartland Soccer League, captured two MYSA State Cup Championships, three USYS Regional Championship appearances and one US Club Region Championship. Off the field the club is in its’ third year of having their own indoor training facility and offices. “First of all, the club is very excited for Jeremy. The role he will have with the St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Metro Club and Academy is a perfect step for him to continue up the ladder. He is one of the best coaches I have been associated with.” said Joe Kofron, Springfield Soccer Club Board of Directors-President.

“This is a bittersweet day. The past five years have been an unbelievable time here with the Springfield Soccer Club. Through the vision and support of the Board of Directors, to the dedication of the coaching staff and obviously the work rate and commitment of our players and parents we have all built this club into one of the most complete clubs in the Midwest.” said Alumbaugh.

The club has also reached over 100 alumni competing at the collegiate soccer level. “I’m very excited to begin this new opportunity with SLSG-Metro and be involved in the Development Academy. It also is important to me that the growth of the Springfield Soccer Club continues. I’m pleased to be staying on in the Technical Advisor role through the 2009-10 season where hopefully I can continue to bring insight and ideas to the club and help ensure a smooth transition process for everyone involved.” Kofron also echoed the thoughts of Alumbaugh. “I also believe that our club will continue to benefit from him being involved with the academy side of things. He will be able to bring back invaluable knowledge to us as our Technical Advisor. As sad as we are to lose him on a full-time basis it is a real compliment to him and the entire Springfield Soccer Club to have someone get the recognition he deserves.” said Kofron.

Springfield Soccer Club and Lake Country Soccer Set to Host Champions Challenge

2009 Champions Challenge

2009 Champions Challenge

For the third consecutive March, Springfield will be host to over 105 youth soccer teams from 7 states as the Greater Springfield Area Sports Commission Champions Challenge will be held March 7-9, 2009. The event is co-hosted by Lake Country Soccer and the Springfield Soccer Club. Action will fill the Lake Country Soccer Complex from early in the morning until late in the evening as teams look to begin their spring outdoor seasons with top-level competition.

Since its’ beginnings in 2007 the Champions Challenge has been a destination for top teams and clubs from throughout the greater Midwest as they seek an early opportunity to get outdoors as the spring outdoor season is right around the corner. “Back in the beginning when we started this venture our goal was simply to attract the top clubs who were looking for some great early season competition. Obviously, the facilities at Lake Country Soccer are some of the top in the Midwest so that was a big attraction for the clubs to come and play on quality fields.” said Jeremy
Alumbaugh Director of Soccer Operations for the Springfield Soccer Club.

Clubs that will participate this year of note are the Kansas City Wizards Juniors, St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Missouri, St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Illinois, Tulsa SC, Little Rock FC, Edmond SC, Blue Valley Stars SC, Milwaukee Sport Club, Hurricane FC, FC Evansville, Woodchips Arsenal and many others.

One of the highlights of the weekend will be the U17 and 18 Showcase Division which features numerous State Cup Champions and Midwest Regional League teams. Teams in this division will each play four games with a heavy emphasis on providing quality games as these teams begin final preparations for their spring seasons which include State Cup Competition and Midwest Regional League matches. The Kansas City Wizards Juniors are the official youth club of the MLS KC Wizards and they are bringing all of their teams this weekend.

“This weekend will provide a big boost to the income of the City of Springfield as hotel rooms are booked and restaurants will be full. A big part of the success of this event goes directly to the Sports Commission for their sponsorship. Also, the staff at Lake Country Soccer with Kelly Ross, Sandi Hendricks, and Katie Ellsworth does an outstanding job with all of the details for the weekend. Eric Sorlie is our liaison from the Springfield Soccer Club and he has put in countless hours the last three years to help make this a can’t miss tournament. Lastly, no tournament can be successful without the volunteers from Lake Country Soccer and the Springfield Soccer Club.

This is truly a joint effort that helps the Springfield Soccer community in many ways.” said Alumbaugh.

Ryan Moses Commits to St Louis University Billikens

U16 Missouri State Cup - Springfield SC vs Lou Fusz PopvicThe Kickapoo Chiefs, coming off of their 3rd place finish at State last year, now have a second member of this years team scheduled to play Division I college soccer next year. Senior Ryan Moses recently accepted an offer from Head Coach Dan Donigan to represent the nationally ranked St Louis University Billikens, where he will join his friend and club teammate Devon Newport (Glendale). Goalkeeper Chris ‘Tommy’ Tombridge, also a teammate on the club squad, earlier committed to Northwestern.

Ryan will be the second Kickapoo Chief to play for the Billikens, following Jack Jewsbury’s tenure from 1999-2002, after which he was drafted by the Kansas City Wizards. Much like Jack, Ryan is a forward who prides himself on his ability to score goals. Jack is excelling for the Wizards at outside back again this season, and Ryan is also being called on to play a significantly different role for the Chiefs this year. He’ll be playing in front of Tombridge as the central defender, focused first on shutting down opposing teams attacks while also taking responsibility for leading the team from the back with his fellow seniors. It will be a challenge for a young man who is used to playing with his back to the opposing teams goal. Here’s what his Coach, Phil Hodge, had to say about it:

Ryan has taken this team on his shoulders this year. He is offering tremendous leadership and a work ethic that does not stop. Ryan is in the weight room before practice and often times after practice as well. While Ryan knows where he will be next year he has not forgotten about his Senior year at Kickapoo. Ryan will be a captain for us this fall, along with Chris, and has high expectations for his Senior year.

Ryan is a Springfield kid, living in the same house his entire life, and soccer has been his window to the world. While he played some basketball and ran track at Cherokee Middle School, soccer soon captured his sole attention. Whether playing for the “Surge” or later, with Newport on a Springfield Premier squad beginning at the U12 age group, he’s been testing himself on an increasingly larger stage every year. Olympic Development (ODP) programs, and then in the Midwest Regional League (MRL) with Springfield SC, he and his teammates opened eyes back in 2007 when they finally broke through and won their first State Championship.

It was at those games in St Louis, soon after Ryan scored the game-winner against Lou Fusz in the quarterfinal round to get past their nemesis (the photo above is Ryan’s reaction after scoring) that College Soccer hit his radar. Joe Burger, formerly a Missouri State assistant and long time MSU Soccer Camps Coach, approached Ryan about the possibility of playing for Drake University, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference and alma mater of Ryan’s father Ron.

That spark of interest sent Ryan on a recruiting journey that culminated in his recent decision. He first worked with Jeremy Alumbaugh to compile a list of 10-15 schools that interested him. He began reaching out to the schools to express his interest in learning more about their program while also letting them know when they could see him play, whether at College Showcase games or MRL games. He attended a couple of summer camps, including the Indiana Hoosier Camp in 2007 as well as the Wisconsin Badgers Camp this past summer. He was narrowing his choices, and soon it looked like Missouri State, Wisconsin or SLU would be his college home.

I asked Jeremy, Director of Soccer Operations at Springfield SC, to offer some thoughts on Ryan

Ryan is a high quality athlete. The first thing you notice when you see him play is obviously his size, but he has so many more qualities than just a typical target forward. He is agile and has soft feet with a good knack for finding goals at the right time. He really enjoys working hard and is always staying after practice to improve his game. The coaching staff at SLU will love his desire to improve and he is a great addition to a quality SLU program.

The first conversations with Donigan, and the SLU staff, occurred at State Cup this Spring and continued at Regionals in Rockford, culminating in a formal visit to the campus in late June. It was during this visit that Ryan let the Coaches know he was interested in making a decision before school started and that he was interested in the Billikens. A formal offer was tendered soon after his visit and his final decision was made a week later.

Asked about his decision criteria, Ryan admitted to first wanting to see a bit of the world and leave Springfield, thus eliminating Missouri State from the equation. There were also discussions with other programs, including Wisconsin and DePaul, that expressed interest in having him play as a central defender in college. While it is a role he gladly assumes for the Chiefs this season, the goal-scoring responsibilities at forward are more to his liking. That, along with the opportunity to play at a program like SLU’s with it’s tradition and fan-base that sealed the decision for him. The Billikens averaged 2,116 fans for 10 home dates at Hermann Stadium last season, which ranked ninth in the nation.

Ryan will join a signing class that already numbers 8 for 2009, including a pair from Scott Gallagher in St Louis, 2 from TX and 2 from CA. This years recruiting class is ranked #24 in the country by College Soccer News and also includes 3 Division I transfers. The challenges will only get greater. I’m looking forward to watching his continuing progression!

On a somewhat related note, I asked Ryan what was in his music player the day I interviewed him. Apparently he’s a classic rock guy, having spent the weekend with his parents at the Lake rocking to the Doobie Brothers while picking up “Mothership”, a new 3 disc collection of the best of Led Zeppelin with some birthday cash. “Houses of the Holy” and “Led Zeppelin IV” both came out when I was in high school but I was busy discovering you “Can’t Buy A Thrill”.

Tommy Tombridge Commits To Northwestern Wildcats

Region 2 U16 Semifinal - Springfield SC vs Michigan WolvesSpringfield, and Springfield SC, has another representative in the Big 10. Goalkeeper Tommy Tombridge (Kickapoo 2009) verbally committed to the Wildcats a week ago, where he’ll play for Head Coach Tim Lenahan at the campus on Lake Michigan, in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, IL.

Unlike many of the players I’ve talked to about their recruiting experience, playing college ball wasn’t necessarily on his radar screen. A bit hard to imagine with an older brother who is part of the squad at Washington University (Bryson, Kickapoo 2007) and a club team that will likely see every single player go onto to college ball, it was just a question of time for this young man. So despite carrying a 30 ACT score into the recruiting fray along with his considerable skills, it’s another reminder that goalkeepers are a special breed.

The wake up call came last year after the Springfield SC U16′s lost to the eventual regional champion Michigan Wolves in the semifinals of the Region 2 tournament. Soon after his return to Springfield he began to receive email invitations to consider attending College Camp programs from half a dozen coaches interested in introducing their program to him (NCAA rules limit the contact to that level apparently). He attended the Goalkeeper Camp at Marquette the summer of 2007 and continued his training with Springfield SC, and more importantly Jesse Miech, now GK coach at Clemson University. It wasn’t until March of this year, following the Dallas Cup, that Northwestern became part of the recruiting picture. It was there that Lenahan first saw him play, on the recommendation of the Akron Zip’s coaching staff who saw the team at the Disney Cup the previous December.

Interspersed among these Showcase opportunities, Tommy had begun identifying programs he was interested in and contacting them. He also took the ACT test. Twice! So when the opportunity arose in Dallas, he was ready. Coach Lenehan saw the first game, a 3-2 win. While that never hurts, the feedback Tombridge received later was that his academic results were a requirement before Northwestern would even talk to him. That, along with the earlier recommendation, are what brought Northwestern to his sideline among the many options available to a coach at the Dallas Cup.

NCAA rules don’t allow direct contact at that point but an invitation to visit the Northwestern campus was extended. Tommy did his overnight visit in April, when the Club team was scheduled to be in Rockford IL for MRL games. April in Chicago can be pretty darn nice (in between the snow showers that are always possible) and the Coaches, team and campus made a big impression on him.

There was still more to be done however with additional discussions continuing with programs like Wisconsin, Bradley, Missouri State and Tulsa among others. And then in April, once Coach Miech arrived on campus at Clemson, Tommy was suddenly on the radar screen for an ACC team as well.

I asked Jeremy Alumbaugh, Director of Soccer Operations at Springfield SC, about Tommy and the recruiting process. He had some very interesting things to offer:

Recruiting is an especially difficult process for goalkeepers. There are always questions. The games at Regionals as well as the Showcase events the boys qualified for this year test the entire team and allow constant evaluation. That plays an important role.

More importantly though, Tommy is a player who is focused on pushing himself to the top. I’ve worked with some excellent goalkeepers, from Matt Modersohn (MSU), Brad Guzan (2 time national champ with the Chicago Magic, now at Fulham) as well as Matt Pickens and Lance Parker. Only Guzan came close to Tommy’s work rate. He just likes to work. The individual effort he has put in has taken his game up significantly and is going to help him reach the next level.

Penn State Nittany Lions at Northwestern WildcatsThe final decision for Tommy came down to Clemson and Northwestern. ACC or Big Ten. After attending the Northwestern camp in mid-July, he had verbal offers from both programs and a decision to make. It’s the purple of the Wildcats that we’ll be following. His decision was based upon the academic opportunities, with a major still to be determined. He’s not admitting to any need to be closer to home but that’s OK, I’ll accept that answer. The Northwestern home field has to qualify as one of the most scenic in the Midwest. That’s Ann Cook, Springfield native and assistant at Penn State, pictured at a game last Fall I covered. Lake Michigan is located a stone’s throw behind her in this photo, with the campus stretching for a significant distance along the lake.

I also have a better idea of how I’ll be spending my birthday this year. Northwestern renews their rivalry with SLU, playing at Hermann Stadium on Tuesday September 30th at 7:00 pm. They last played to a 1-1 draw in an exhibition game last August. Before that, Northwestern knocked the Billikens out in the 2nd round of the NCAA playoffs in 2006 enroute to a Quarterfinal finish.

So I’m a happy camper. I’m looking forward to watching the battles between Devon Newport and Tombridge in the future. Club teammates now, college foes soon. Now I’m off to figure out who “Explosions In The Sky” is, Tommy’s pre-game music choice. Congrats Christopher ‘Tommy’ Tombridge! UPDATE – as noted, the other Big 10 player (besides Rachel Lavoy at Purdue) will be Graham Basecke who will be playing for the Indiana Hoosiers. That’s what I get for finishing this story at 2:30 am

PRESS RELEASE
Springfield S.C. U-17 Boys Claim Back to Back MYSA State Cup Championships

Springfield Soccer ClubThe Springfield Soccer Club 90/91 (Under 17) Boys claimed their second consecutive Missouri Youth Soccer Association State Cup Championship by defeating Lou Fusz-Popovic in penalty kicks 5-4 at the Scott Gallagher Soccer Complex in St. Louis, MO May 10th. By winning the MYSA State Cup Championship the team has earned the right to represent Missouri at the US Youth Soccer Region II Championships in Rockford, IL June 20-25, 2008. Sixteen teams will compete in pool play to determine the Regional Champion and advance to the US Youth Soccer National Championships July 22-27, 2008 in North Little Rock, AR.

The MYSA Championship game was a tightly contested affair with Springfield S.C. 90/91 taking the early lead off a Ryan Moses free kick from the top of the eighteen yard box. Moses delicately bent the ball over the wall into the upper ninety of the goal. Minutes later Lou Fusz would answer to make the game even at 1-1. A thirty minute lightning delay extended the first half and the game remained tied 1-1 going into halftime. The second half saw opportunities for both teams with Springfield S.C. 90/91 having a few good looks at the goal.

Still tied at the conclusion of regular time the game went into two fifteen overtime periods. Having the better of play during overtime Springfield S.C. 90/91 was unable to find a goal. The game then went to penalty kicks where both teams made three of their five kicks, forcing the game into golden goal penalty kicks. Both teams made their first kick and Springfield S.C. 90/91 made their second attempt, while Lou Fusz missed their second one and that secured the MYSA State Cup Championship for Springfield S.C. 90/91.

Having achieved their second MYSA State Cup Championship the team is now looking forward to improving their 2007 Semi-Finalist status at Regionals. “Without a doubt this victory was a tremendous statement by the players. They have stayed committed during the past several months at it paid off today. It was a total team effort, but when it got to penalty kicks Christopher Tombridge our goalkeeper took over.” said Cory Carr Head Coach.

Team members include; Christopher Tombridge (Kickapoo), Steven Curti (Carthage), Ryan Squires (Glendale), Blake Aggus (Joplin), Tyler Bennett (Kickapoo), Ryan Partch (Glendale), Caleb Collier (Kickapoo), Matt Medley (Parkview), Ian Newport (Glendale), Devon Newport (Glendale), Grant Bollig (Lebanon), Ian Kennedy (Kickapoo), Graham Basecke (Glendale), Mason Morawitz (Hickman), Brock Ruggeri (Kickapoo), Ryan Moses (Kickapoo), Tim Griffin (Parkview), Bryce Collier (Hillcrest).
