Glendale Falcons And Springfield Catholic Advance To Quarterfinal Round

Glendale Falcons vs Ozark Tigers, Sectional Playoff

Glendale Falcons – 5
Ozark Tigers – 0
The game opened today in front of a large crowd, happy to be in the sunshine, evenly split between fans of the traditional power and the new upstart coached by a regional icon. With the wind at their back, and memories of their 0-3 loss April 25th in the back of their minds, the Tigers attempted to reach new heights yet again in this season of success. The Falcon’s, led by their six senior All-Stars, could have been tempted to consider the graduation ceremonies beckoning them later this evening.

It was all business for the seniors. Moments after the Tigers had their first successful foray into the Glendale box, the Falcon’s made their opponent pay for pushing up. It started in a familiar way, with senior Lou Opfer successfully collecting a pass at midfield and holding it against strong pressure. This allowed freshman Emily Cline to begin her run up the left side with Opfer sending a through ball that led her perfectly. Cline was able to beat her defender and turn towards goal where she threaded a ball between the goalkeeper and an onrushing defender for what turned out to be the game-winner in the 8th minute.

In the 10th minute, a set piece led to another goal for the Falcons, once again from Cline. Sophomore Emilee Williams put a ball up and just over the defensive line at the top of the box. It appeared the defense lost sight of the ball which allowed Cline to pounce on it and push it to the right side, where it bounced in off of the upright. Cline scored a third in the 21st minute, taking a ball from the left side and after a collision with the final defender, suddenly found herself going in on goal unmarked where she buried it reliably. Lindsey Sprouse completed the scoring in the first half in the 30th minute when in a repeat of Cline’s first effort, she was able to run into the box and as she moved from left to right, turned on the ball and buried it to the left side. The final goal was the prettiest, as Williams sent a cross from the left side into the box. Cline climbed high and headed the ball back to the far post, sealing the win and sending the Falcon’s to their first Quarterfinal since 2004.

The Falcons will play in the Quarterfinals on Saturday May 24th at 2:00 pm at Missouri Science & Technology’s campus in Rolla, MO. The opponent is Incarnate Word Academy, 3-0 winners over the Jefferson City Jays this evening. There’s a nice article on their center back Drea Barklage, a teammate of Chealsey Russell’s on the St Louis SC U15 National Champions from 2005. That list (IWA, STL SC) includes Blake Miller who has 8 game-winning goals for the Red Raiders. And you’ve probably heard, they are ranked #2 in the US by at least one poll.

BTW, congratulations to the graduating seniors and Happy Birthday to Karis!

Springfield Catholic – 4
St James Tigers – 0
The Irish faced off for the second straight year against St James in their quest to return to the Final 4. The Tigers had a year to prepare for this match and the defensive barriers held until the 23rd minute when freshman Shelby Hatz got the first of her two goals. Anna Delong would score in the 28th, Hatz would get her second before the half and junior Maddy Renner continued her recent scoring string with the final goal in the second half.

The Irish will play Saturday May 24th at 11:00 am at Columbia Hickman High School. The opponent is St Dominic’s, 5-0 winners over Hannibal this evening. This will be a rematch of last year when the Irish lost to the ultimate State Champions 3-0. St Dom is currently the 2nd ranked small school in the St Louis Metro area.

Waynesville Tigers Earn Second Straight Ozark Conference Crown

Waynesville Tigers Earn 1st Win Ever Over Glendale FalconsWaynesville Tigers – 7
Parkview Vikings – 0
Katie Pritchard scored 4 goals this evening, reaching a regional milestone. She now has 167 goals for her career, tying her with Anne Felts of the Rolla Bulldogs as the most prolific scorer in Southwest Missouri. Michaele Fulmer of KC O’Hara owns the state record with 204 but Katie’s next goal will place her second in the state record books. She’s pictured from the game against Glendale earlier this season when she scored a hat trick, including the game winner in OT.

In addition, the Tigers completed a 9-0 run through the Ozark Conference this evening with their win over the Vikings. Glendale is their closest competitor, and shared the crown with them last year, but it is the Tigers alone at the top this season. Congratulations to Coach Josh Scott and his squad!

Springfield Catholic – 6
Bolivar Liberators – 0
Springfield Catholic vs Bolivar Liberators The Liberators visited this evening and fought hard (that’s senior Lindsy Archer pictured) but were unable to break through the Irish defense. Tara Bailes, playing her first full match without her knee brace, led Catholic with three goals and an assist. Anna DeLong scored twice and Shelby Hatz once, while Natalie Smid had two assists and Emily Kessler had one.

The Liberators had a few good opportunities in the first half (while I was there), the best when freshman midfielder Izzy Mersch sent Archer into the box with a nice diagonal ball. Archer was able to find space in the box and get her shot off but freshman Rachel Scott reacted well to the ball and pulled it in. The rematch will likely be Wednesday May 14th in the District Final. Glendale Falcons vs Lebanon YellowjacketsGlendale Falcons – 2
Lebanon Yellowjackets – 1
The wind was blowing hard tonight but the Falcon’s didn’t let it disturb them as they rebounded from an early goal by the Yellowjackets, scoring two against the wind in the first half to eke out the victory over last years vanquishers. Lebanon got on the scoreboard in the 3rd minute when Hanna Winkel won a 50/50 ball in the offensive end and broke past the defense. She shot quickly and caught the keeper off the line and the ball just went in under the crossbar. The Falcon’s evened it in the 14th minute when the defense was caught napping on a corner kick by Jamie Bond. Lindsay Sprouse was unmarked in the box and one-timed her shot into the left side of the net.

In the 23rd minute, it was Karis Hefton who got the game-winner (pictured). She was sent into the box on a fine through ball by senior Megan Garrad, and despited being challenged as she entered the box, Hefton hammered a shot from the penalty spot that blew by the keeper into the roof of the net.

The second half was scoreless, as both goal keepers stepped up tonight. Abbey Roam for the Yellowjackets had to face a half dozen corners kicks as the Falcons used the wind and their speed to get into the corners but she didn’t back down, including one remarkable sequence that finished with her diving at Lou Opfer’s feet to finish it. Rachel Duckworth, for the Falcons, continues her on-the-job training with a flourish. In the 65th, Lebanon counter-attacked from a Glendale corner kick and sent Chelsey LeFors in on goal. Duckworth’s instincts were excellent, coming out quickly and diving for the ball. The rebound was sent back in quickly but somehow Rachel was able to get back up and make the final save, diving once again as the attacker tumbled over her in the box.

Both teams went about their jobs in workmanlike fashion tonight, saving the real intensity for the District playoffs I have to assume. Lebanon needs to show patience in the offensive end while trying to avoid giving up the corner kicks and fouls outside the box. The Falcons are going to have to improve their efficiency on set pieces if they want to avoid these close games. All of it bodes well for the spectators as the District 11 playoffs offer some excellent soccer. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t send a shout out to Lebanon’s Emily Boyer, their sophomore midfielder is out with mono. I missed her energy. Janell Glidden was a talented, physical presence in the middle and up top for the Yellowjackets and a new face for me. Welcome back to the game! Photo slideshow from the game.

Camdenton Lakers – 3 (PKs)
Joplin Eagles – 2
The Lady Lakers defeated Joplin in a penalty kick shootout. Camdenton led 1-0 early in the match when sophomore midfielder Jessica Smith received a pass across the mouth of the goal from senior Meg Manzer. The score stayed 1-0 until the second minute of the second half when Joplin scored on a free kick that got past senior goalie Krista Murphy. The 1-1 score held until 10 minutes left in the match when Manzer was fouled inside the penalty area and senior midfielder Blaire Baker scored on a penalty kick. With less than two minutes left in the match, a Camdenton foul inside the penalty area resulted in Joplin tying the match up 2-2, again via the penalty spot.

After two ten-minute over time periods, the match went to a pk shootout. It was Camdenton’s third of the season and Joplin’s first. The Lady Lakers won the shootout as all five of Camdenton’s shooters made their penalty kick. Camdenton’s Krista Murphy was able to stop Joplin’s third shooter on a diving save that was pushed off the right post and rolled back towards the shooter. Joplin’s fourth shooter scored on a penalty kick which left it up to Camdenton freshman Ashley Paschel to calmly step up and hit her first ever high school penalty kick which ensured a Camdenton victory 5-3.

Willard Tigers – 2
Central Bulldogs – 1

Kickapoo Chiefs – 9
Hillcrest Hornets – 1

Ozark Tigers – 6
Neosho Wildcats – 0
Three seniors scored goals for the Lady Tigers on Senior Night en route to the shutout over district opponent Neosho. Kristen Glaubitz got two, Erica Hogan got one as did Jessica Bush. Sophomore Megan Gunnels and sophomore Alicia Collard rounded out the scoring for Ozark.

Nixa Eagles – 4
Marshfield Jays – 1
In the first ten minutes of the game, the Lady Eagles had scored two goals; one by senior forward Stephanie Allen and one by freshman out-side midfielder Kelsey Bartell. Both goals exemplified Nixa’s renewed confidence and hunger for goals. The Lady Jays’ Ashley Honeycutt slipped behind the Nixa defense and slotted the ball into the net soon after. Allen got two more in the second half for her hat trick.

Glendale Falcons vs Hillcrest HornetsGlendale Falcons – 8
Hillcrest Hornets – 0
The Hornets came to Cooper on Senior night for the Falcons and didn’t make it easy for Glendale in the early going. With both teams coming off of important wins on Monday, it was the Hornets who were more focused initially. Glendale has too many weapons however and once they concentrated on moving the ball into the box, Emily Cline was on the left corner to bury a short range shot. It was 2-0 at half before the Falcons finally wore out the Hornets, who lost their GK late in the first half on a courageous save in the box. Stats for the game are Jeni Frewin (1G/1A), Megan Garrad (1G/1A), Emily Cline (1G), Lindsey Sprouse (1G), Emilee Williams (1G), Katie Brewer (1G), Jamie Bond (1G), Ashleigh Dallas (1G), Mindy Moffe (1A).

Kickapoo Chiefs – 6
West Plains Zizzers – 0
The Chiefs baseball team ended up moving their game to Parkview due to rain, so I don’t know if this one got played. Anna DeLong and Emily Kessler rounded out the scoring for the Irish with goals in the 68th and 71st minutes.

Wednesday Before The Deluge

Glendale Falcons vs Kickapoo ChiefsGlendale Falcons – 4
Kickapoo Chiefs – 0
In a game that had three acts, the Falcons were able to surprise their local foes with the shutout this evening. Sophomore Lindsay Sprouse scored what proved to be the ultimate game-winner in the 8th minute when she was sent into the box by an alert through ball from junior Emily Jordan. Sprouse’s speed and balance allowed her to break past the defender, and maintain control, before slotting her ball past the on-rushing goalkeeper. Slowly but surely the Chiefs fought back, taking control of the midfield and the game for much of the remainder of the half only to be thwarted by the resolute Falcon defense, even as the Chiefs earned half a dozen corner kicks. Chealsey Russell was once again the catalyst, as she came back to be in a position to receive and hold more balls from her teammates.

Twice in the half goalkeeper Rachel Duckworth was able to blunt Russell’s efforts, first with a diving save in front of Russell’s run into the box and in the 27th minute when she pushed a shot just wide enough to see it deflect off the upright.

The Chief’s came close to tying when in the 2nd half, outside midfielder Abby Anderson was sent in on the right side, only to see her shot settle onto the crossbar before being cleared. The Falcon’s proceeded to slowly wear down the Chiefs before breaking open the game with three more goals. Russell did not play in the second half and the Falcon’s depth, swapping Brewer & Williams regularly with starters Garrad, Opfer and Jordan, opened up the game. Sprouse scored two more, in the 48th on another breakaway created by Jeni Frewins simple header splitting the defense and then in the 67th when senior Jamie Bond put her cross from the right side directly in Sprouse’s path. Her quick touch lifted the ball over the keeper’s head, caught in no-man’s land.

The Falcon’s completed the scoring in the 72nd, with Frewin tracking down a ball deep in the left corner before turning her defender and putting a cross into the six yard box. Opfer was there to walk it in as it came down behind the defense.

Another twist in the Ozark Conference. Of course, the Falcon’s won the non-Conference game last year before losing later, denying them the outright Conference crown.

Willard Tigers – 2
Greenwood Blue Jays – 0
In a game that appeared certain to go to overtime, the Tiger’s pulled out the win on a late goal by Ali Appleby at Harrison Stadium this evening. In the 72nd minute, sophomore Carol Moss, earning her first minutes with the Varsity this season, sent a diagonal ball that Appleby was able to run onto. Her strike from just inside the box went in just under the cross bar for the game winner. Anne Bird also scored as the Jay’s were caught up trying to equalize.

Waynesville Tigers Continue March Up Ozark Conference Ladder

Waynesville Tigers Earn 1st Win Ever Over Glendale FalconsWaynesville Tigers – 3 (1st OT)
Glendale Falcons – 2
The Tigers achieved another milestone this evening, earning their first ever win over the Glendale Falcons, on the Falcon’s pitch. The accomplished it by shutting them out the second half and turning to their most reliable weapon, senior Katie Pritchard, who scored her third goal of the game in the first 40 seconds of the first overtime period. It came as the Tigers won the ball after the Falcon’s start, and two passes later Pritchard is bursting into the box on the left side and pushing her shot past the keeper.

The Tigers struck first this evening, in the 1st minute, as Pritchard won a 1v1 battle with the GK on an early breakaway, the only time in several opportunities that later arose. The Falcons battled back, equalizing in the 12th minute on Maggie Schrier’s long range shot, picked up from a clearance after Emily Cline’s shot rang off the cross bar. The Tiger’s took the lead again in the 32nd minute on Pritchard’s direct kick, taken from the left side about 20 yards out. The shot hit the far upright and caromed into the net. The Falcon’s knotted the score in stoppage time, once again earning several opportunities, before Emily Cline was able to finish a ball that came to her from Jamie Bond’s cross.

The Tigers move to 5-0, including 2-0 in the Ozark Conference with their wins over traditional powers Kickapoo and Glendale. The Falcon’s fall to 1-2, 1-1 in the Conference.

Camdenton Lakers – 2
Nixa Eagles – 1

Erica Hogan scored in the 30th minute, hitting a big shot from deep outside the right side of the 18 yard box. Sophomore Megan Stodden added the third goal in the 69th minute. Sophomore Rachel Skelly scores in the 33rd minute on a ball from Megan Walker. Skelly’s run allowed her to get to the ball at the corner of the 18 yard box just a split second before the Greenwood goalkeeper, slotting it past her for the game-winner. Happy birthday Rachel.
