KC Wizards Face Houston Saturday – Live on Fox Soccer

Jack Jewsbury vs NE Revolution, 2009

The Kansas City Wizards (2-1-1, tied for second place in Eastern Conference) travel to Houston to face the Dynamo (2-2-1, fourth place in Western Conference) on Saturday. Game time is 7:30 pm and as noted, it’s being broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel.

Houston attempts to rebound from a bad loss to Chicago in which they lost midfielder Geoff Cameron for the season. The Dynamo’s makeshift lineup will attempt to combat one of the hottest teams in MLS, while Kansas City will hope a road victory against a veteran Houston squad will help position them one of the teams to beat in MLS.

On Oct. 4 of last season, both sides needed a win as Houston wanted to earn home-field advantage for the playoffs, while Kansas City was still fighting for the last playoff spot. An early red card by Cam Weaver left the Dynamo short-handed for most of the match, but Luis Angel Landin scored his only goal thus far in MLS, and Houston held the lead until the 73rd minute. However, the Wizards’ Zoltan scored a beautiful goal from a long ball played over the top of the Dynamo defense, and as a result the match ended in a disappointing draw for both teams.

Happy Birthday Jack Jewsbury!

Jack Jewsbury, April 2008

Jack Jewsbury, April 2008

Under the category of ‘time flies’ it’s once again time to reach out to Springfield’s professional representative, Jack Jewsbury. The new Major League Soccer website is as bad as you’ve heard, there is not a roster link on the KC Wizard’s website to point you to. A bit of searching does bring up this unformatted page that identifies Jack as 29 and from Joplin (actually his birthplace) so there is some updating to do. To 30!

Jack will spend his birthday playing – The Kansas City Wizards will play fellow MLS side Colorado Rapids on Tuesday, April 13th at 7:30 p.m. CT in a qualifying game for the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The game will take place at the Stanley H. Durwood Stadium on the campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), which is located at the intersection of Cherry Street and East 51st Street.

Because the match must have a winner, in the event of a tie the match will go to two 15-minute overtime periods. If the match remains tied after overtime, penalty kicks will be used to determine a winner. The winner of this game will advance in the U.S. Open Cup qualification process to play the winner of a three-team pool that includes the New England Revolution, New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union at a date to be determined in May. The winner of that game will then enter into the round of 16 in the U.S. Open Cup.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest soccer competition in the United States, having started in 1914 as the National Challenge Cup. Today, the competition involves teams from all levels of the American soccer pyramid, from semi-pro sides in the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) to teams in Major League Soccer.

The Kansas City Wizards’ 2009 run in the cup was cut short in the quarterfinals with a 1-0 away loss to Seattle Sounders FC. The team suffered a similar fate in 2008, falling 6-5 in a penalty kick shootout to the then-USL1 Seattle Sounders in the quarterfinals.

The Wizards have won the U.S. Open Cup once, defeating the Chicago Fire 1-0 in 2004 at Arrowhead Stadium off an overtime goal from Russian forward Igor Simutenkov.

Jack Jewsbury Interview

The Kansas City Wizards began training in Phoenix, Arizona late last month, signaling the start of a five-week preseason camp to prepare the team for the 2010 MLS season. Jack Jewsbury is not with the team however, but rather has begun his recovery from surgery for a tear in his hip. It’s been three months of recovery and the Wizards offered this video interview recently.

Note that there are nine teams from across Major League Soccer are participating with the Wizards in the Arizona capital, part of an effort by the organization to create a consistent preseason base for multiple MLS teams.

Maryland Soccerplex – Boyds, MD | 7:30 p.m.

This is the fourth time the third-year USL2 club will meet an MLS team in the U.S. Open Cup. In 2007, the City Islanders defeated D.C. United 1-0 in a shock third-round result, then took the Revolution to the limit in the quarterfinals before losing 2-1.

The City Islanders lead the USL Second Division with 23 points from 12 matches, three points ahead of the Wilmington Hammerheads, though they lost 3-2 to Wilmington on Saturday in their last league match. Chad Severs has scored seven goals to lead Harrisburg, tied for the USL Second Division lead.

The winner of the United-Harrisburg match will meet the winner of all-USL quarterfinal between Rochester Rhinos (USL1) and Wilmington Hammerheads (USL). Harrisburg will travel to Rochester if they win, while playing host to Wilmington.

Jack Jewsbury and the KC Wizards have moved into the Quarterfinals of the US Open Cup and as Mike at Down The Byline notes – We Want Silverware

Personally I think it’s time to bring home some more silverware, and the Open Cup is the opportune chance to do it. Only 3 games separate the Wizards from winning the Dewar Cup. With almost 5 years having gone by since the Wizards brought home some silverware, it’s time the Wizards change that and actually win a trophy. Winning the Open Cup would likely mean sacrificing a game or two in league play. If it brings home the Open Cup, I don’t have a major problem with that fact.

Will our boys move on?

“USA-Mexico is the biggest soccer rivalry in this region,” Wizards Technical Director Peter Vermes said. “As a player for the U.S. National Team, winning always meant a little bit more against Mexico. SuperLiga gives us the opportunity to extend that intense rivalry to the club level. We look forward to playing Santos Laguna and partner club Atlas AC. Hopefully, we will be as successful against these Mexican clubs as the USA has been against the Mexico National Team over the last decade.”

Jack Jewsbury And Kansas City Wizards Update

Nice little feature ad that is screening on cable in the KC area. I neglected to post anything earlier this week but Jack just had a birthday, Monday April 13th. As he notes in the ad, he’s in his 7th year with the Wizards and one of the benefits is that family and friends can attend the games.

The Wizards play tonight at Chicago, the game will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel at 7:30 pm. I continue to get my news on the Chicago Fire via The Red Card, check it out.

Next home game is Thursday April 23rd at 7:00 pm. It’s going to be broadcast live on ESPN which means we can get it in HD hopefully this season. Anyone been to a game yet, care to pitch in here with feedback, maybe a story or two?

Weekend Opportunities – World Cup Qualifiers, MLS, Snow?

Sorry, knowing the quality of our weather prognosticators around here I probably shouldn’t even bring up the Winter Storm Watch that flashed across Twitter yesterday afternoon. Any bets there won’t be any in Springfield?

US Men at El Salvador – Saturday 8pm, ESPN2

Some history lessons from the US MNT blog, including the fact that the last visit to El Salvador in 2004 was only the 2nd win ever in Central America. Here’s the Salvadoran roster and players to watch. The Villanova vs Pitt game should start around 6pm so the conflicts will be limited by then.

KC Wizards Logo KC Wizards vs Colorado Rapids – Saturday 8:30 pm, Direct Kick

The KC Wizards are in Colorado on Saturday for a game against the Rapids. The Wizards may be without Arnaud and Wolff for the game. The Wizards haven’t won in Denver since June 9, 2004, a span of five league matches. The Rapid’s should have Matt Pickens (Missouri State Bears) in net yet again.
