Alec Martinez, Glendale (2011) celebrates with fans after game-tying goal

Glendale Falcons – 3
Kickapoo Chiefs – 1
Alec Martinez had a coming out party tonight at the Greenwood Stadium Field. The senior midfielder came out in the second half this evening and set a stake in the ground, for his team and the region, as his creativity and skill opened up the game. A game that, other than a goal by the Chief’s in the 20th minute, didn’t bode well for the spectators or the players as neither team seemed capable of holding the ball for more than two passes during the first half.

The Chief’s took the lead in the 20th minute on a goal by sophomore Turner Adams, who had come on only moments earlier. A corner kick, won after Nate Lavoy’s blistering shot was pushed wide by goalkeeper Reece Connor, was volleyed by Adam’s as he ran onto the ball and somehow redirected it to the far post. (VIDEO)

The score remained 1-0 until early in the second half when the Falcon’s came out in their attacking formation, featuring Martinez up top paired with junior Austin Hart. Three minutes in, Martinez ran onto a well placed ball from jr Sam Knetzer and sprinted into the left side of the box ahead of his defender. His gently lofted shot eluded the on-rushing keeper and settled into the far side netting, tying the game. Only two minutes later, Martinez created the next opportunity when he settled a ball near the penalty spot and as two defenders converged, sent senior transfer Joe Aubuchon (from Hickman) into the box with a cheeky little back heel. Aubuchon’s run created the opportunity and as the defender reacted to the run, Aubuchon was taken down and drew the penalty kick. He calmly stepped up and converted the kick, getting the game-winner in his first derby game.

Asked about his experience, and how it compared to the games between Hickman and Rockbridge in Columbia, Joe noted there was no comparison. The student support far exceeded anything he was used to and his smile told the rest of the story.

The Falcon’s got their final goal in the 70th when sophomore Nic Bauer found space to receive Martinez’s pass near the top of the box. Bauer turned as the defense was slow to react and his simple chip shot from 22 yards out floated just beyond the reach of the Kickapoo goalkeeper and settled into the back of the net. (VIDEO)

These two Class 3 District 11 opponents meet for the first time this season in a game at Greenwood Stadium Field at the Cooper Soccer Complex tonight. JV kicks off at 5pm, varsity at approximately 6:45 pm. The last time they met was in the District 11 Final where Ian Kennedy’s 76th minute goal broke the hearts of the Falcon Nation. The Chiefs went on to defeat the Carthage Tiger’s 1-0 in the Class 3 Sectional before falling to Columbia Hickman 0-1 when the Kewpies scored on a corner kick in the 77th minute.

The teams have had three common opponents this season. Kickapoo defeated Camdenton 3-0 at home on Sep 7th while defeating Park Hill 1-0 and losing to Park Hill South 1-2 last weekend. The Falcons defeated Camdenton 3-0 at home last night while also losing 1-2 to Park Hill South and drawing 0-0 with Park Hill last weekend.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Simon Fraser (B.C.) is the new No. 1 team in the second regular season edition of the 2010 NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The top spot marks the first time since 2000 that The Clan sits on top of the poll. The Clan gathered 644 total points and 13 first-place votes. Simon Fraser narrowly is the top team with a separation of three points (644-641) against No. 2 Rio Grande (Ohio).

Five new teams enter the Top 25 led by the big jump of No.14 Shorter (Ga.). The Hawks are 3-0-1 overall and ranked for the first time since the 2008 season. Shorter has a Top-25 win against then-No. 17 Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) on Aug. 27. All five teams, Shorter, No. 17 Belhaven (Miss.), No. 19 William Jewell (Mo.), No. 21 Kansas Wesleyan and No. 25 Bryan (Tenn.), are appearing in their first 2010 poll.

Shelby Stewart And Ian Kennedy – Springfield SC Players of the Year

Springfield SC Players of the Year - Ian Kennedy and Shelby Stewart with Eric Sorlie

Springfield SC announced their Players of the Year for 2009 at their annual banquet last night. With an attendance of well over 500, the club recognized Ian Kennedy (Kickapoo) and Shelby Stewart (Parkview) as their Players of the Year. Chosen for their performance, team impact and sportsmanship, the two join a select group of players who have developed in the program.

Shelby Stewart has signed to play soccer for the Missouri State Bears next Fall. Shelby was featured here early in a report on her signing. Stewart heads into her senior year with the Vikings, where she will be a three year Varsity starter after not playing her freshmen season due to transfer limitations. Stewart scored 25 goals to go along with 11 assists her junior year at Parkview. Her speed and leaping ability are top-tier and will be critical elements in her development as a college player. She just wrapped up the basketball season where she was a starting forward for the Vikings, who lost to District finalists Branson Monday in the first round.

Ian Kennedy has signed to play soccer for the William Jewell Cardinals, a team that is moving from NAIA to Division II in the Fall of 2010, effectively trading Evangel and the HAAC for Drury and the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Joining his former teammate from the two-time State Championship squad, Ryan Squires, Kennedy will likely play a similar role for the Cardinals as he did for SSC. Ian is coming off of the Quarterfinal run the Chiefs made in 2009 where he was the emotional leader that made Kickapoo the top team from the region. He will hone his play this year as a member of the defending MRL Premier Division champions this Spring.

UPDATE: as Prof Richard Garrad notes in the comments, “William Jewell will hopefully be provisionally accepted to Division II during the 2011-12 academic year, and become an active Division II program in 2012-2013″. He’s keeping a closer eye on the program then I since there is another Falcon playing for the Cardinal’s, his daughter Megan. A conversation on Monday with the coaching staff at MO S&T indicated that they are still working on the Fall 2010 schedule because it will include Wm Jewell.

Physical? Check. Insurance Form? Check? High School Practice – Only A Week Away?!!

If you haven’t been keeping an eye on the countdown timer, than Monday August 10th will sneak up fast. A week from Monday High School sports will begin in the state. If your son, or daughter, are playing Fall sports there are a few items that need to be in place. You’ve got next week to complete them so your child can be on the pitch from the beginning.

1. A completed physical form.
2. A completed proof of insurance form.
3. Completed citizenship form.

By the way, the video is from Thursday nights 8v8 Kick Around at Kickapoo High School. The Chiefs, Falcons and Ozark Tigers were playing a series of 30 minute games with each school fielding a pair of teams. Two of the Chief’s 3 seniors this year are shown, with Skyler Russell bringing the ball down the left side with a square ball to Ian Kennedy who’s one-timer is blocked by senior Jordan Pitt, with the goal line save coming from senior Brandon Baum. Feels like mid-season already!

Camdenton Lakers host Sedalia Smith-Cotton

Camdenton Lakers – 7
Sedalia Smith-Cotton – 1
In a game that indicates how strong the competitive juices flow between these teams, despite the move out of District 9 by Camdenton, these Central Missouri squads went at each other hard from the opening kick off. After seeing the Lakers a 2nd time now this season, the key element I see is a willingness across the entire team to go to the ball and challenge every play. It’s like watching a high-pressure EPL game as they force their opponents to play quickly or defend their attack.

The Laker’s got the lead in the 18th minute from a corner kick when #2 Drew Whitney, redirected the ball that fell to him and just over the outreached arms of the goalkeeper. Smith-Cotton thought they had tied the game in the 32nd minute only to see the goal called back for offsides.

I headed home at halftime, having stopped on the way home from a business meeting in Columbia. The second half featured a hat trick by Rayder Bennett, a brace from Jeff Moffitt and one by Nate Buttrum.

Sedalia graduated 10 starters on last years District Championship team but have a pair of talented midfielders leading the way. We’ll check back in on District 9 later this season.

New Covenant Academy Warriors – 5
Thomas Jefferson – 1

Greenwood Blue Jays – 2 (PKs)
Bolivar Liberators – 1
Greenwood would dominate the first half of play even though the Liberators got on the board first when Bradley Stillwagon finished an assist from Matt Magana. Greenwood would tie the game with six minutes to go in the first half. No more goals in regulation, with the Jay’s getting the win on the 4th PK.

Carthage Tigers – 10
Aurora Houn ‘Dawgs – 0
Carthage goals by Phillip Devillers (3), Cole Beckham (2), Joe Curti (2), Lorenzo Salas, Christian Solis and Jose Lopez.

Cassville Wildcats – 10
Columbus (KS) – 2
Five goals were scored in each half. Luis Ortega had three goals, and Justin Mills and Bryan Schroeder both had two goals. Other goal scorers were Matt Angel, Matt Frazier and Otto Franco. Schroeder also had three assists for the night.

Monett Cubs – 1
Willard Tigers – 0
The Cub’s avenge their loss this weekend at the hands of the Tigers, who won by a similar margin en route to winning the Cub’s Tournament.

Crocker Lions
– 4 (2 OT)
Belle – 3
Goals scored by Sophomore Jessie Tart (2), Freshman Teddy Zeigenbein (1) and the OT goal was scored by Tjalling Bosker

Carl Junction Bulldogs – 2

Logan-Rogersville Wildcats vs Webb City Cardinals - 1st Win
The Logan-Rogersville Wildcats team, 2008 September 18th, after the programs 1st ever win

Rogersville Wildcats – 1 (1st OT)
Webb City Cardinals – 0
In a tightly fought match that both teams will have a hard time forgetting, it was the Wildcats who came out on top this evening, earning the programs first ever win. The goal started in the midfield, with #21 Nathan Davis winning a 50/50 ball and then finding #5, Wes Bird, on the left side. His run down the wing and cross into the box found #14 Brenden Williams unmarked at the far side. Williams confidently nodded the ball into the net past the keeper and the Wildcats had earned their first win in the 88th minute of their 5th game.

For the Cardinals, the team will rue the opportunities lost in regulation as they missed on one breakaway and several corner kicks with balls that went through the six yard box untouched. The best opportunity came late in regulation but #31 for the Wildcats stayed on the post and blocked the shot. Chalk up a Central Ozark Conference win for the Wildcats in soccer this year.

Kickapoo Chiefs – 2 (PK’s)
Chaminade Red Devils – 1
The Chief’s took the lead in the first half on a goal by Ian Kennedy assisted by Skyler Russell, before the Red Knights were able to tie it on a goal by Tony Auck in the second half. Overtime was scoreless, leading to PK’s which the Chief’s won. Skyler Russell takes the last pk and makes it for the win.

The Red Devils are 5th in the current St Louis rankings and have lost to Ft Zumwalt West (Kickapoo defeated them in the Quarterfinals last year) while going 1-2 at the Great Midwest Classic last weekend. They face #1 CBC on Saturday in their first MCC game of the season.

Bolivar Liberators vs Hillcrest HornetsBolivar Liberators – 4
Hillcrest Hornets – 2
The Liberators got the game winner midway through the second half, to earn the hard fought win at Cooper #3

New Covenant Warriors – 1
Marshfield Blue Jays – 0
Dylan Fieker scored the only game of the match to give NCA their 6th win in 7 games.

Neosho Wildcats – 2
Nixa Eagles – 1

Camdenton Lakers – 3
Waynesville Tigers – 2
The Tiger’s scored on a pair of PK’s but it was a trio of Laker’s that got the win in this key District 10 match. Drew Whitney and Jeff Moffitt got goals in the first half and Nate Buttrum got the game-winner in the second half, on his first goal of the season.

Willard Tigers – 1
Monett Cubs – 0
The winning goal came from Willard’s Jackson Patillo (#10) 7 minutes into the second half. Jackson’s free kick from just outside the box found the upper right corner of the goal.

Region II Tourney Update – Springfield SC Win First Game

Good news from Rockford where the U17 boys won their opening game on Saturday 4-0 over the FC Barrington squad from Illinois making their club’s first ever visit to Regionals. Goals were scored by Ryan Partch, Bryce Collier, Ian Kennedy and Devon Newport, continuing the broad-based scoring model that has gotten them this far.

Sunday’s opponent is the KC Wizards Juniors who defeated Northwest Indiana FC by a 6-1 score, making the game the key to moving out of the group on Tuesday.

Scott Gallagher, who qualified via Midwest Regional play, tied Bangu (MN) 1-1 in their opening group game.

Two-time regional champion (2003, 2005) and 2005 national champion (Under-15 Girls), St. Louis Soccer Club Under-18 Girls defeated Javanon (KY) 2:1. I think they are playing without All-Star Chealsey Russell (Kickapoo/Rice) who was injured in the State Final last week.

PRESS RELEASE
Springfield S.C. U-17 Boys Claim Back to Back MYSA State Cup Championships

Springfield Soccer ClubThe Springfield Soccer Club 90/91 (Under 17) Boys claimed their second consecutive Missouri Youth Soccer Association State Cup Championship by defeating Lou Fusz-Popovic in penalty kicks 5-4 at the Scott Gallagher Soccer Complex in St. Louis, MO May 10th. By winning the MYSA State Cup Championship the team has earned the right to represent Missouri at the US Youth Soccer Region II Championships in Rockford, IL June 20-25, 2008. Sixteen teams will compete in pool play to determine the Regional Champion and advance to the US Youth Soccer National Championships July 22-27, 2008 in North Little Rock, AR.

The MYSA Championship game was a tightly contested affair with Springfield S.C. 90/91 taking the early lead off a Ryan Moses free kick from the top of the eighteen yard box. Moses delicately bent the ball over the wall into the upper ninety of the goal. Minutes later Lou Fusz would answer to make the game even at 1-1. A thirty minute lightning delay extended the first half and the game remained tied 1-1 going into halftime. The second half saw opportunities for both teams with Springfield S.C. 90/91 having a few good looks at the goal.

Still tied at the conclusion of regular time the game went into two fifteen overtime periods. Having the better of play during overtime Springfield S.C. 90/91 was unable to find a goal. The game then went to penalty kicks where both teams made three of their five kicks, forcing the game into golden goal penalty kicks. Both teams made their first kick and Springfield S.C. 90/91 made their second attempt, while Lou Fusz missed their second one and that secured the MYSA State Cup Championship for Springfield S.C. 90/91.

Having achieved their second MYSA State Cup Championship the team is now looking forward to improving their 2007 Semi-Finalist status at Regionals. “Without a doubt this victory was a tremendous statement by the players. They have stayed committed during the past several months at it paid off today. It was a total team effort, but when it got to penalty kicks Christopher Tombridge our goalkeeper took over.” said Cory Carr Head Coach.

Team members include; Christopher Tombridge (Kickapoo), Steven Curti (Carthage), Ryan Squires (Glendale), Blake Aggus (Joplin), Tyler Bennett (Kickapoo), Ryan Partch (Glendale), Caleb Collier (Kickapoo), Matt Medley (Parkview), Ian Newport (Glendale), Devon Newport (Glendale), Grant Bollig (Lebanon), Ian Kennedy (Kickapoo), Graham Basecke (Glendale), Mason Morawitz (Hickman), Brock Ruggeri (Kickapoo), Ryan Moses (Kickapoo), Tim Griffin (Parkview), Bryce Collier (Hillcrest).
