Under-19 Boys US Youth Soccer National Championship live broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel

2010 USYSA National Championship logoFRISCO, Texas (July 8, 2010) – On the 75th anniversary of the James P. McGuire Cup, the Under-19 Boys US Youth Soccer National Championship final will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel from the Overland Park Soccer Complex in Overland Park, Kan., beginning at 7:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, July 24.

The Under-19 Boys James P. McGuire Cup is the oldest trophy in youth sport dating back to 1935 with the inaugural youth championships and played annually except during World War II. Officially known as the United States Soccer Federation National Junior Challenge Cup, the competition was renamed the James P. McGuire Junior Champion Cup in 1975, after the late United States Soccer Federation President. He played for the Brooklyn Wanderers in 1929, and later joined the Brooklyn St. Mary’s Celtics who with McGuire at midfield won the U.S. Open Cup. James McGuire also served on World Cup and various other FIFA committees, and earned an international reputation as an excellent soccer administrator and leader.

“As the official broadcast partner of US Youth Soccer, we are thrilled to showcase the U-19 Boys Championship on live television, and on the momentous 75th anniversary of the McGuire Cup,” said David Nathanson, General Manager of Fox Soccer Channel. “On the heels of the men’s national team’s exciting run in South Africa, we now have the opportunity to see future U.S. stars take the stage and continue to chase their dreams.”

Pregame coverage begins Saturday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m. ET, leading into kickoff at 8 p.m. from the Overland Park Soccer Complex in Overland Park, Kan. The Under-19 Boys final will be the first youth soccer championship broadcast in high definition, with Brad Porter and Sasha Victorine calling all the action.

Under-19 Boys Teams vying for the James P. McGuire Cup (Team / Hometown / Region)
FC Delco Hammerheads / Downingtown, Penn. / Representing Region I (East)
Crew Juniors / Columbus, Ohio / Representing Region II (Midwest)
Andromeda 91 Navy / Plano, Texas / Representing Region III (South)
WSM Internationals / Beaverton, Ore. / Representing Region IV (West)

The championship final is one of 12 taking place over the weekend and the culmination of the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series, the country’s most prestigious national youth soccer tournament. The event provides over 185,000 players from US Youth Soccer’s 55 state associations, the opportunity to showcase their soccer skills against the best competition in the nation while emphasizing teamwork, discipline and fair play. The Series is known as the ultimate destination for the country’s collegiate soccer coaches and the future of soccer.

The US Youth Soccer National Championships consist of four US Youth Soccer Regional Champions in the Under-14 through Under-19 Boys and Girls age groups as well as the US Youth Soccer National League qualifiers in the Under-15 through Under-17 Boys and Girls age groups to complete the field of 60 teams.

In addition to the live broadcast, The US Youth Soccer National Championships Highlight Show, presented by adidas will also air on FSC. The one-hour show highlights the games and stories from the 12 national titles in contention and will air on Friday, August 6 at 8 p.m. ET.

Fox Soccer Plus – Not On Mediacom!

Fox Soccer plus logoAccording to an AP wire story Fox Soccer Plus reaches deals to start airing DirecTV, DISH Network and Verizon FiOS have agreed to carry Fox Soccer Plus when the network launches Monday.

The new network, a companion to Fox Soccer Channel, is taking over many of the rights that had been held by Setanta USA, which shuts down Sunday night. Fox Soccer Plus, a premium channel, will televise the European Champions League, the English Premier League, FA Cup, League Championship, FA Cup and national team and the Italian Serie A, plus rugby from the Magners League, the Guinness Premiership and the Heineken Cup.

None of the cable carriers will televise the new network in HD at this time. DISH is carrying FSC in HD and will charge $14.999 monthly for Fox Soccer Plus as an “a la carte” option.

I don’t have the Mediacom HD package, if they were to add this channel it would be the motivation I need to finally spend the money. What is your experience, tell me if you see the new channel now that it’s premiered!

Feel free to visit the Fox Soccer Plus website as well and click on the Locater button near the bottom. Enter your zip code and provider to let them know you are interested!

Move Aside Baseball, We’re Watching The Champions League Final

I don’t watch baseball anymore so maybe someone who is current can help me out here, but it appears that Fox will not be showing baseball on Saturday May 22nd. Instead we’ll all get to enjoy the Champions League Final that afternoon according to this story

Fox will air its first soccer match on May 22, with the telecast from Madrid beginning at 2:30 p.m. (ET) and kickoff set for 2:45 p.m. The match marks the first time the Champions League final will be played on a Saturday. The story was first reported by the Sports Business Journal.

When Fox Soccer Channel wrested the U.S. TV rights to the top European club competition from ESPN2 last April, it announced that FX, which counts some 95 million subscribers, would host the finale.

Simply put, the UEFA Champions League Final is one of international soccer’s most prestigious and competitive events,” said Fox Sports chairman David Hill in announcing the scheduling change. “There’s no doubt that soccer aficionados in the U.S. will welcome the opportunity to see this game live, and we’re excited to work with our colleagues at Fox Sports International to make it available to every household in America via FOX Sports.”

“This year, for the first time, the UEFA Champions League Final will be played on a Saturday,” said UEFA president Michel Platini. “This is an important change for European football as it is a strong desire for UEFA to engage with more families and children and to see them attend inside the stadium. Outside of Europe we also want to allow the greatest number of people possible the chance to follow the showpiece final of the best club football competition in the world. I am delighted that thanks to Fox Sports this will now be possible, as for the first time ever, the UEFA Champions League final will be live on a nationwide broadcast channel right across the USA.”

Again, to reinforce this message, it is the local Fox station that will be broadcasting the game, not Fox Soccer Channel. On a related note, FSC will launch premium service Fox Soccer Plus on March 1, and will begin its coverage of the Champions League’s knockout stage, with round of 16 coverage on Feb. 16-17 and Feb. 23-24 (next week!).

Fox Soccer Announces 2nd Channel, HD Plus Arrives March 1st

Fox Soccer plus logoFrom the FOX Soccer website comes the announcement of a second soccer channel!

Fox Soccer Plus is scheduled to kick off with an impressive lineup of live soccer matches during the network’s first week. Barclays Premier League games are set to air March 6-7, the FA Cup quarterfinals are taking place, and Italy’s Serie A is in full swing. Saturday’s doubleheader at Drury – the Men play at 5:00 pm, the Women at 7:00 pm
Sunday afternoons game at Missouri State – the Women host Tulsa at 1:00 pm

Otherwise posting will be light as I’m working very hard to get the second issue of SGFsoccer.com – The Magazine out the door. Be safe!

Oh, and I should mention that Coester’s now has SENTANTA to go along with Fox Soccer Channel, Gol TV and MLS Direct Kick. A couple fellows stopped by this week to see ManU play on Monday and Mark discovered he could buy the Sentata subscription and did it the same day.

This Week In Soccer

Glendale HSWhat, already? That’s right, we are a week away from the start of practice for the Boys High School season and most college programs. The buzz I’m seeing on Facebook is the excitement of packing and preparing to head off to the dorms for the college freshman. For the upper class men, its the reality of the fitness tests. For me, it’s getting the schedules, and rosters, and trying to make some sense of it all once again this season.

We’ve got some great games to enjoy this week to prepare ourselves for the new season. The start of the Olympic games features soccer in advance of the formal opening of the games. There is also a Friendly between Red Bull NY and Barcelona. Here’s the lineup:

Wednesday – 6:30 am – US WNT vs Norway (MSNBC/UHD)
Wednesday – 6:00 pm – Barcelona vs Red Bull NY (ESPN2)
Thursday – 4:00 am – US MNT vs. Japan (MSNBC)
There will also be games between Honduras vs Italy as well as Argentina vs Ivory Coast
Saturday – 04:00 am – US WNT vs Japan (USA)
as well as Nigeria vs Germany (W – MSNBC), Brazil vs N Korea (W – MSNBC)
Sunday – 6:45 am – U.S. MNT vs. Netherlands (USA)
as well as Italy vs S Korea (MSNBC) and Argentina vs Australia (Telemundo)

Other opportunities this week include the USYSA National Championship Highlights Show that will be shown on Fox Soccer Channel at noon on Saturday. See the highlights of the games that were played in Little Rock two weeks ago.

In addition, the PDL Championship will be shown Saturday evening, at a time to be determined. The Thunder Bay Chill, regular visitors to Springfield as members of the Heartland Conference, will face the Laredo Heat. If I hear of a viewing party, I’ll let you know!

And if you’re looking for a final road trip, the KC Wizards will host Chivas USA on Saturday at 7:00 pm. Both teams lost this weekend and are stuck in the bottom half of the table in their respective Conference with 22 points each. Not a ringing endorsement of course but with only 12 games remaining there are only a few opportunities remaining to see our regional team and for them to begin moving up the table.
