Southwest Baptist Visits Drury Panthers Saturday

Kelsy Long, Drury Panthers (2011)

Kelsey Long, Drury Panthers (2011)

This is a game I always look forward to and with the large recruiting class of local players that Head Coach Rob Podeyn has brought into the Bearcats roster, there’s an even stronger pull. Still an exhibition game for both teams, its a nice measurement for the Bearcats (MIAA) and Panthers (GLVC) as they complete preparations for their D2 seasons.

Game time is 6:00 pm Saturday at Harrison Stadium.

The Bearcats recruits for 2010 from the region include Paige Hemphill (Ozark), Rachel Haden (Ozark), Molly Marcotte (Republic), Amy Coffey (Rogersville), Erin Boschen (Hillcrest), Megan Melguin (Kickapoo) and Chelsea VanHook (Camdenton).

Southwest Baptist opens their season on September 2nd when the Quincy Hawks visit. Quincy is ranked #2 in the GLVC while Drury is ranked #6 which means the results of tonights game and next weeks game will offer an early assessment of the quality of the GLVC coaches prognostication skills.

The Panthers hit the road for three games next week, at Ashland, Tiffin and Lewis over the Labor Day holiday weekend. They visit Quincy on September 10th.

Thursday High School Girls Soccer Report

For those of you sneaking peeks during commercials of the Mizzou game, sorry for the lack of photos. Flickr got 98% done and stalled, so I left my office. This is getting updated at Maria’s with a traditional margarita and the Mizzou game to keep me company – go Memphis (says the UMR grad). I’ll try and get the photos up tomorrow before I leave for the weekend (no, I’m not afraid of snow, I’m carousing in STL this weekend with a friend from Chicago who’s flying in. Not quite Spring Break but some R&R before the season gets into full swing)

Marshfield Jays Win at Hillcrest Hornets
Marshfield Blue Jays – 4
Hillcrest Hornets – 0
They weren’t carousing on the pitch at Hillcrest tonight but there was plenty of energy to keep the crowd entertained. The first half was like a basketball game as play went back and forth, neither team able to establish themselves 20 minutes in when the Hornet’s 4 year starter in goal, Jillian Gerkey, was forced to put a shot by Alex Cantrell (on left in photo) up and off the crossbar. The Jays continued to pressure and got what proved to be the game-winner in the 24th minute when #18, Danica Norstrom, ran into the right corner to pick up a loose ball. Her square ball, across the face of the goal at the top of the 6 yard box, found #11 on the back post where she reliably buried the ball into the back of the net.

The Jays would get 3 more goals from 3 different players, including Alex Cantrell’s first goal of the season 4 minutes into the second half (Alex was Marshfield’s top scorer last year as a freshman). Alex buried a ball on the Jay’s 3rd opportunity after Gerkey made two saves but didn’t get any help from her defense. In the 50th, #18 scored a very pretty goal when she made a strong run to the back post on a direct kick by #16, Ashley Honeycutt, that was sent to the back post from the left touchline 35 yards out. The final goal was scored by Honeycutt on a scramble off a corner kick at the back post.

The Jay’s look positioned to compete in District 5, with a nice combination of talent. Alex Cantrell (#22) appears to have free rein to go wherever she fells needed on the pitch from her midfield position, there are a pair of speedy wingers who can chase down balls in the corners and Honeycutt (#16) is a smart, fast sweeper who kept the goalkeeper from needing to make many plays this evening.

The Hornet’s, missing half a dozen players due to Spring Break, should compete this season with Carthage, Central and Willard in the district. Erin Boschen, a playmaker and favorite of mine, is out until late in the season due to injury but it’s a large and energetic group that came out this season, led by #29 Danielle at sweeper and #15 Alicia Ortero at forward. I’ll be out again to watch them surprise some teams.

Springfield Catholic – 3
Lebanon Yellowjackets – 1
Tonights game at Catholic brought out the aficionados tonight, interested in seeing what these two teams are going to be capable of this season. The answer was a positive one for both squads, despite the score. In a game that was fought in the midfield in the first half, the second half saw things open up as rain and early season conditioning (or the lack thereof) changed the flow of the game. Catholic scored first, in the 55th when following a corner kick the Irish were able to keep the ball in the offensive end until Erin Fitzgerald pounced on a ball outside the six yard box and slipped it past the keeper (pictured).

In the 64th, Catholic’s field leader Natalie Smid picked up a loose ball in the defensive end and after a 20 yard run slipped a ball into the path of Emily Ortega who was making a run down the left side. Two touches took her just inside the box and her left footed shot curled to the back post, well beyond the reach of the keeper. It was a beauty.

The Yellowjackets are not to me underestimated this season as they reminded me tonight. They came right back down and after earning a corner kick, senior Janel Glidden buried Hannah Winkel’s ball to bring Lebanon back within one. I’ll have to dig into the roster further, once Coach get’s it to me, but unless Jeff City steps up I would expect that Lebanon and Rolla will renew acquaintances in the District final this year.

Catholic was not done, they never are, and tonight was no different. The final goal was scored by #22 Natalie Smid in the 73rd minute as she buried a ball from inside the 6 yard box, after the Irish once again kept a corner kick down inside the Yellowjackets box. It was only a question of time as she had half a dozen excellent opportunities tonight, with left and right footed shots that were just wide this evening. Kids, if you want to learn what it means to run a team come out and keep an eye on #22 in green.

Nixa Eagles – 8
West Plains Zizzers – 0
At the half only 2-0. 7 different players scored… Rachel Murphy had 2 goals, Jo Pavlowsky, Courtney Frerichs, Kelsey Bartell, Vicki Rische, Ashlyn Robillard, and Tatum Mangum had 1 apiece. Kristin Miller got the shutout.

Logan-Rogersville Wildcats at Carthage Tigers, Inaugural Game For Both TeamsCarthage Tigers – 2 (PK’s)
Carl Junction Bulldogs – 1
Carthage scored first on a goal by Jessica Diaz. Carl junction scored near the end of the second half. Game ended 1-1 and the teams went two overtime periods without any scoring. Jessica’s pictured in white against Logan-Rogersville earlier this week.

Carthage get’s their first win from the penalty spot against their neighbor and one of the areas other new programs, converting their 2nd and 4th shots while CJ converted on their first PK. Categorized under History!

Laquey Hornets – 6
Richland Bears – 1
Junior Emily Murray scored three goals for the Lady Hornets (now 1-1) while senior Shelbee Cowart, freshman Blair Cristoffer and Capi Burnat added one apiece. Richland’s Couri Braithwait scored the lone Lady Bear goal.

Willard Tigers Soccer Tourney Report

Bolivar Liberators vs Willard TigersBolivar Liberators – 2
Willard Tigers – 0
The Liberators rode a stingy defense and an opportunistic offense to the title at Saturday’s Willard Soccer Tournament. In the title match, junior captain Jordan Halbrook got the game-winner in the 26th minute when she buried a ball that fell to her in a crowd after the Tigers were unable to clear it. It came as Bolivar were slowly imposing themselves on the match, recovering from Willard’s aggressive attack in the first 20 minutes. When senior captain Lindsy Archer scored in the 31st, her shot from the far left side of the box finding the back side netting over the GK, the Liberator’s were able to rely on the defense to maintain the margin. The Bulldogs held on to earn the win Saturday on Myriah Hick’s goal (pictured) in the 53rd minute, after taking a 2-0 lead in the first half only to see the Hornet’s come back and tie the game. Hick’s goal, her second of the match, came on a fine through ball that the GK got in front of but it popped out and Myriah walked the ball in for the ultimate game-winner. The Bulldog’s got their first lead from freshman Nikki Murphy Casey Diamond in the 4th minute, after Hicks hit the crossbar and the Bulldogs earned a corner kick. Rebecca Carter’s ball into the box fell to Murphy and she buried it confidently. This was a two-way game throughout and the Hornet’s first opportunity came in the 6th but Erin Boschen’s hard shot was caught by GK Dessa Loveland. In the 15th, Carter scored for the Bulldogs when her direct kick from the left side found the far siding netting.

The Hornet’s comeback began in the 23rd minute, as the Hornet’s earned a throw-in deep in Central’s end and Boschen beat a defender before burying her shot over the onrushing GK. She then tied the game in the 32nd when her corner kick went in off of a Bulldog defender. The second half saw an early Bulldog charge, requiring two excellent saves from the Hornet’s keeper until Hick’s broke through. The Hornets almost tied again in the 65th but it was not to be in this game against their Northside foe. Photo Slideshow

Joplin McAuley Warriors vs Marshfield Blue JaysMcAuley Warriors – 6
Marshfield Blue Jays – 2
This was a game of two halves, the first a tightly fought match that saw two lead changes and two ties before the Warriors broke it open in the second half. With only 11 players, McAuley had to live up to their mascot in getting through three games in two days. They opened the scoring in the 5th minute, by junior Jae Stephens. Marshfield tied via Miranda Barrera in the 9th minute and took the lead on Kassie Hyde’s goal in the 14th. Barrera hit the upright a few minutes later but nothing until stoppage time of the first half when McAuley tied the game on a set piece, again from Jae Stephens.

The second half was all McAuley, with junior Arrelle Santillan netting three in the 47th, 49th and 59th minute before the final goal in the 63rd, an own goal by Marshfield on a McAuley corner kick. The Blue Jays continued to battle but were unable to capitalize on several opportunities at the far post as their dynamic freshman midfielder, Alex Cantrell was able to put a number of crosses into the box. Monday Game Reports

Hillcrest Hornets – 7
Mt View Liberty – 1
My earlier 3-0 report was the score that KOLR10 reported on their news broadcast last night. It was good to see them covering soccer. I’ll get more details on the game soon. Hillcrest goals were scored by Jessica Bass (2), Erin Boschen (3), Kelsie Moss and Kala VanHuss. Shelly Reneger scored for Liberty.

Glendale Falcons – 3
Ozark Tigers – 0Glendale Falcons vs Ozark Tigers
The Falcons placed a stake in the ground for District 11 Monday evening, as they took on the top-ranked District 12 squad at Cooper. Senior Lorin Opfer muscled her way past two Ozark midfielders and launched a low hard shot to the right corner of the goal in the 26th minute to score the eventual game winner for her team late in the first half. The Tigers only offensive foray of the half had come a few minutes prior and it seemed to invigorate the Falcons.

The second half followed a similar pattern, punctuated by freshman Emily Cline’s goal from the left side, one minute in when she buried Lindsey Sprouse’s cross from the right. Cline scored a second, her 11th of the season, in the 54th minute to seal the win. It came as the Tiger’s fought to clear a ball from the box. Opfer picked up the clearance outside the box and sent a ball in that Cline was able to settle, turn and shoot as GK Paige Hemphill charged off the line. Hemphill played another fine game, showing a reservoir of courage that continues to astound. The Tigers fought hard the entire game, a lesson learned early this season and a key tool if they want to earn their first District title since 2001.

Springfield Catholic – 4
Greenwood Blue Jays – 0
Springfield Catholic vs Greenwood Blue Jays Shelby Hatz put the Irish on top in the 15th minute when she finished a ball from Tara Bailes. Catholic dominated play in the first half getting 20 shots and 9 corner kicks, but only managed one goal. The girls were able to convert three in the first 18 minutes of the second half, however, to come away with the win. Tara Bailes hit a nice shot just under the bar from 18 yards in the 46th minute from an Anne Prenger free kick, Andrea Parker converted a Natalie Smid corner kick in the 56th minute and Shelby Hatz finished the scoring in the 58th minute on Tara Bailes second assist of the game.

Bolivar Liberators – 4
Willard Tigers – 1
In a game with significance for the Class 1 District 12 seeding, the Lady Liberators improve to 7-3 with their win over Marshfield last night. Jordan Halbrooke (2) and Lindsy Archer (2) scored for the #2 ranked Liberators.
