RIP Bob Jordan

Bob, Sara and Emily Jordan, Senior Night 2009 with Frewins

I lost a friend and a mentor on Monday when Bob Jordan passed away due to a heart attack. Bob, and his efforts on behalf of first the Pershing Generals and later the Glendale Falcons, was the impetus for my efforts here. Without his support and assistance, I would not have been able to pull it off. That early effort blossomed into a friendship that now brings tears to my eyes as I consider not only my loss but that of his family and the others he has touched. Goodbye Bob.

Services will be held at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield. Visitation is this evening, Thursday December 15th, from 6-8pm. The Memorial is Friday at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Robert Jordan Memorial Fund may be made at any Empire Bank location or are accepted at Gorman-Scharpf.

From his obituary

In 2000 Bob agreed to assist with the Pershing Middle School soccer team and coached the JV team. His success led to a 6 year run as head coach where his teams won 5 Varsity City Championships (3boys/2girls). Coaching was his gift and he strove to make certain that players both enjoyed and learned from their athletic experience. In 2001 Bob began to administer the Glendale soccer website, a duty he happily continued to perform long after his children left the program. He was a passionate believer in the benefits of sports, rivalries and traditions and he found great satisfaction in his membership in the local soccer community.

Bob was just one of the many people it takes to make a community prosper. Soccer was not the only one he supported and to each he brought his understated personality and desire to be the best. He succeeded and more importantly, he offered to many the support they needed to do the same. I thank you Bob.

3rd Annual 3v3 Summer Sizzler Bigger Than Ever

Blueberry Thunder Muffins U12/U13 Winners79 soccer teams converged onto the Ozark Soccer fields Saturday, July 31, for the 3rd Annual 3v3 Summer Sizzler to make it the events largest tournament to date. Teams came from Kansas City, Joplin, Lebanon, Neosho, Carthage, and the Greater Springfield area with well over a dozen club teams represented. The 3rd Annual Summer Sizzler held up to its name with temperatures in the mid/high 90′s, but that did not stop the constant action. All 10 fields ran off one running clock to keep all the games perfectly on time.

Ozark coaches, players and parents organize and run the event. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Breast Cancer Awareness in honor of OHS’s Nurse Debbie Barnes who has been battling the disease since last Fall. Next year the Summer Sizzler will be held on Saturday, July 23. For more information on the event, or to see photo’s taken by the event photographer, e-mail summersizzler 2008@yahoo.com.

Missouri High School Girls Soccer: Glendale Heads To State

MO Class 3 Quarterfinal: Glendale Falcons Defeat Jeff City Jays
Glendale Falcons – 2
Jefferson City Jays – 0
The Glendale Lady Falcons achieved their stated goal of reaching the Final 4 today, a realistic goal accomplished as a result of the new District lineups and because the Falcons have the best offense in the region. While most teams relied on one or two options, the Falcon’s have the top 3 with Sprouse, Brewer and Cline always ready to go forward and attack the goal.

Freshman Molly Brewer got the game-winner today when she nailed a header from Emily Jordan’s corner kick in the 62nd, alone at the top of the six-yard box and resolute in the face of the goalkeepers charge (pictured above, you can see bits of her behind the keeper just as she’s nodded the corner kick towards goal, the only red in a sea of white defenders). The final goal came when Emily Cline, freed from the responsibilities of marking the Jay’s Kara Steiner when she was moved from right midfield to forward, found space going forward and volleyed Katie Brewer’s cross in the 69th.

It was never certain, not until the final whistle as the Jay’s continued to fight, but it was not a game with a lot of offensive highlights either. The teams spent most of the first half in the midfield, attempting to establish control of the flow of play in the face of nerves, the highest temperatures of the season, and a pitch that is at it’s peak in the Fall season but offered primarily a dirt surface in the central area.

The Falcon’s midfield – Cline, Katie Brewer, Emily Jordan, Mindy Rose Moffe and Molly Brewer (left to right with Molly Brewer in an attacking position) – went about their responsibilities in a workmanlike fashion while probing for weaknesses. It wasn’t until the 2nd half when they won several corner kicks in succession that they created the pressure they needed to finally break down a Jay’s defense that had gone through the entire playoff period without giving up a goal.

Congratulations to Holly Robinson (Glendale 2004) who won her 1st game as a High School coach.

The Falcons will play the defending state champion Incarnate Word Red Knights at 7:00pm on Friday, June at the AB Center in Fenton. Last year’s Quarterfinal against IWA was a 0-5 loss for the Falcon’s. IWA knocked off Nerinx Hall 1-0 tonight.

Lee’s Summit North has booked a ticket to the Final 4 with their 5-3 win against Liberty (wow!) and they are joined by fellow Public School participant Pattonville who knocked off Cor Jesu 3-2 earlier today. 3 Public School teams, including one from St Louis. What a Final 4 this will be.

I’m guessing it will be IWA vs Lee’s Summit North in the Final.

Emily Cline breaks out with 4 goals in the game, along with goals from Emily Jordan, Lindsey Sprouse, Molly Brewer (2G) and Jeni Frewin (1G) for Glendale. The Eagles goal was scored by freshman Yasmin Farfan-Ulloa late in the game, from Kelsey Sander’s corner kick. The ball dropped into the six yard box and Yasmin hammered the attempted clearance into the back of the net.

Video’s are available for viewing on my YouTube page, including 1) Emily Cline knocking the ball out of the keepers hands and into the net and 2) Lindsey Sprouse running left to right before cutting it back into the corner and 3) Emily Jordan hammering a shot from just outside the box under the crossbar

Thursday’s High School Girls Soccer Report

Parkview Vikings Win At Home Against Waynesville Tigers
Parkview Vikings – 1
Waynesville Tigers – 0
The Vikings got their goal from the always reliable Jess Maerz early in the 1st half. Jess collected a defensive clearance in the offensive end and sent a hard shot from about 25 yards out into a corner of the net. That goal, and hard defensive effort led by sophomore McKenzi Payton, allowed the Vikings to get the Ozark Conference win this evening. The Tigers, who recently welcomed their emotional captain Erica Combs back from an early season knee injury, put continuous pressure on Parkview for the final 20 minutes of the game but were never able to penetrate the defensive shell thrown up by the Vikings.

Nixa Eagles – 8
Carl Junction Bulldogs – 0
The Eagles won with a balanced scoring attack from 7 different players. Goals were scored by Kelsey Bartell (2), Vicki Rische, Ashlyn Robillard, Rachel Murphy, Katie Bolton, Brooke Rowden, and Kristin Miller. The win moves their record to 13-6-1. This sets a new single season wins record for the program.

Carthage Tigers – 3

Kickapoo Chiefs – 10
Hillcrest Hornets – 0

Glendale Falcons – 1
Lebanon Yellowjackets – 0
For the second night in a row, the Falcon’s get a game-winner from their freshman midfielder, Molly Brewer, this time assisted by senior captain Emily Jordan. With the win the Falcon’s are now 8-0 in the Ozark Conference. The Chiefs are 8-1 having completed their Conference games. Next Monday’s game at Camdenton will thus decide if the Falcon’s are sole Conference champions or if they will share the title.

Tuesday’s Southwest Missouri High School Girls Soccer Report

The Yellowjackets accomplished step one in their effort to return to the District Final’s for the 3rd straight year. Thursday’s game against Camdenton will be the next test, while Jeff City looks to get past Rolla and Waynesville next week.

Branson scored fifteen minutes into the match when Neva Raschel’s free kick went off the crossbar and was headed in by Emily Joplin. The score held until stoppage time in the first half when Ali Appleby broke free and beat Bri Ford to tie the score going into half. Both teams moved the ball in the second half but Jordan Gattis got the game winner with a nice header back to the far post in 63rd minute. Branson continued to pressure and got its third goal from Maggie Charland off a one time hit in the 79th minute.
