Nixa & Rock Bridge Win Kickapoo Shootout

Nixa Eagles Celebrate Kickapoo Shootout Trophy

Nixa Eagles Celebrate Kickapoo Shootout Trophy

Brown Division
1st Place
Nixa Eagles – 1
Kickapoo Chiefs – 0
On the strength of three straight shutouts from goalie Mason Young, the Eagles held off the Chiefs to capture the Brown Division trophy this evening. The Eagles goal was scored by Robert Neathery as his shot from outside the box slipped just inside the upright in the 30th minute. The Chiefs moved defender Dylan Corbett into the attack midway through the second half, leaving three defenders back, and had several shots that were kept out due to the acrobatics and reactions of goalkeeper Young. The pressure continued to the final seconds and the relief was evident on the coaches faces as the players celebrated their breakthrough win, their first ever over Kickapoo!

Following a decade of participation in the Shootout, this weekend was the first time the Eagles have won their 1st game of the tourney, a 2-0 shutout of KC-based Blue Springs, moving them into the winner’s bracket for Saturday. Both goals were scored by senior KhaiUyen Huynh. A late morning 1-0 win over St Louis-based Pattonville, goal by Drake Hughes with an assist from KhaiUyen Huynh, moved the Eagles into the title match and an opportunity to test themselves against their most significant challenge of the season, against the Chief’s who are the favorite in the chase for the District 11 title. Matching the girls team this year must be a significant incentive for the Eagles.

Neathery’s goal was only a small part of his story today. The Eagle’s were without central midfielder Drake Trease for both of today’s matches as well as losing forward Jameson McFadden for the season due to a broken arm. The sophomore stepped into the central position, parnering with Corey Cann, and ensured that Nixa didn’t falter. KhaiUyen Huynh has also stepped up his game, as represented by his role in the Eagle’s offense this weekend but more importantly his work rate and ability to create in the offensive end, opening opportunities for the team. Drake Hughes and Adrian Yang-Jacobi, both given more responsibility and playing time this weekend, stepped up as well.

It was a lively and enjoyable match as either team could have won. November is looking more and more interesting.

Kickapoo Chiefs

Kickapoo Chiefs, Fall 2010

Kickapoo Chiefs, Fall 2010

I visited the Kickapoo Chiefs morning work out on Thursday, opening my efforts to renew acquaintances with the High School game in the region. The Chiefs reached the Final 8 last year, losing to Columbia Hickman 0-1 in the Quarterfinal, while knocking off Glendale in the District Final and Carthage in the Sectional. The Chiefs finished 3rd in the State in 2007 but lost to Glendale late in overtime in 2008 in Districts when the Falcon’s made their run to 2nd in State, the highest level for a boys program from the region.

Looking at 2010 the Chiefs have reason to be confident yet again. Returning 8 starters, adding a senior transfer who will start on defense, Kickapoo will rely on a disciplined defensive team with one key weakness. Who will score?

The Chief’s have four key seniors this year. All will likely start on defense and they will be led by Goalkeeper Tyler Moses. Moses found his mojo during the Kickapoo Shootout last year when his play in the PK win over Blue Springs helped carry the team to the Championship win over Springfield Catholic and ultimately to the Quarterfinals, losing only to Columbia Rockbridge during that four week period.

He’ll be fronted by seniors Nathan Lavoy and new transfer Dylan Corbett, who has been recognized as All-State Honorable Mention the past two years for the New Covenant Warriors. Derrick McDiarmid, a 1st team Regional pick, will bringing his attacking style to the flank.

The junior class represents the top three returning scorers, with Jake Nedoma (8 goals, 1 assist = 17 points), Devon Selsor (7, 3 = 17) and Dane Ruggeri (5, 3 = 13) and the pressure will be significant to increase their production, especially in tight games. A look at the results from the previous two years shows just how important Ian Kennedy and Skyler Russell were in those situations and these three will need to deliver. Selsor will likely slot in at a forward position while Nedoma and Ruggeri attack from outside midfield positions.

They will not be alone. Aaron Strunk came on strong late in the season when given the opportunity to play as a forward, moving up from a central defensive position, showing creativity and a natural attacking style. His goal against Glendale in late October helped position the Chiefs for the win and I anticipate he’ll show well this year. He finished with four goals, 10 overall points last year. The Chiefs will need to replace the 42 goals, 109 total points, that Skyler Russell and Ian Kennedy delivered.

It all starts in the midfield and the Chiefs have a pair of sophomores expected to lead the team. Josh McCutcheon’s efforts in defensive midfield last year allowed Ian Kennedy the opportunity to go forward and lead the attack. This year he’ll pair with Elliot Williams, who moves up from a role player to starter, to run the central midfield. Their maturity and ability to hold the ball while creating opportunities for their teammates will also lay the foundation for the Chiefs success for the next three years.

Hunter Durham, a sophomore, is my pick for the third player to join Corbett and Williams in the starting 11.

The Chiefs open on the road September 3rd, visiting Nixa where the game finished 4-3 last year. Glendale is the opponent in their third game, on September 15th, a game everyone looks forward to. Kickapoo will participate in three tournaments this year, over a three week period beginning with the Gateway City Classic in St. Louis on October 1st. The Kickapoo Shootout runs October 8-9 and the Chiefs will travel to Jefferson City for the Classic October 14-15.

The game winner came in the 92nd minute, it was the third of Kyle “toad” Slagle’s goals on the evening. Slagle got the game winner on a 60 yard free kick. Toad took the kick from beyond midfield. The ball bounced once, Matt Magana, the keeper and a defender all went up for the ball. The keep got his fingertips on it, but the momentum carried the ball into the net for the golden goal!

Only the JV played tonight folks, in a steady rain that soon became a downpour which led to the cancellation of the Varsity game. The score above is for the JV, with the Wildcat’s scoring the first goal in the 21st minute when captain #7 got down into the right corner. His cross went through the GK’s hands and fell to #17 at the far post who buried it reliably.

New Covenant Warriors – 3
Greenwood Blue Jays – 0
Via an NCA fan – First goal off an impressive header by Dylan Corbett early in the second half. Brett Murray extended the lead via a PK soon after.

The Warriors ended the game with a late goal by Dylan Fieker. This was a District 6 game, so early advantage to the defending champs.

Glendale Falcons vs Parkview VikingsGlendale Falcons – 1
Parkview Vikings – 0
At Glendale, in a light but growing rain, the Falcons played some pretty soccer but were only able to score one as the Vikings appear to have their strongest team since 2005 when these two went at each other. Their blue collar approach and preparation gave them opportunities but in the end the Falcon’s got the goal they needed. It came in the 60th minute from a direct kick by Devon Newport, into the upper 90, after his brother Ian was pulled down just outside the box. District 11 is going to be tough!

Camdenton Lakers – 7
West Plains Zizzers – 1
Drew Whitney scored the first goal of the season for the Laker’s around the 25 min mark and the wake only got larger. Goals from Rayder Bennett (2), Jeron Sinclair (2), Jeff Moffitt and Jeff Dorhauer provided the final margin. Jason McAllister got the late goal for the Zizzers, from Anthony Holt.

Marshfield Blue Jays – 1
Ozark Tigers – 2 (OT)
From the Marshfield Jays website: The Tigers got the first goal of the game, off a corner kick with just 10:41 left on the clock. The Jays just played with more determination. Then with the clock in stoppage time, Willis Zirschky answered Ozarks corner kick with one of his own. He sent the ball in to the far post and Ethan Jernigan was there to head it into the back of the box. This brought the game to a tie with just seconds left in the half. The fans went WILD!!!

Rolla Bulldogs – 11
Crocker Lions – 1

Willard Tigers – 10
Aurora Houn’Dawgs – 0

Waynesville Tigers – 3
Hillcrest Hornets – 0
Goals were scored by Eric Iverson (30:31 first half) assisted by Gehrig Haberstock, Eric Iverson (1:32 second half) unassisted, and Tim Collier (20:12 second half) assisted by Jeff Brayman. Wade Holcomb had the shutout for the tigers.

Joplin Eagles – 6
Lebanon Yellowjackets – 0
The Eagles got a pair of goals each from junior Max Duncan and Jordan Adame with Geovanni Lara and Miguel Farias completing the scoring.

Thomas Jefferson – 10
Columbus (KS) – 1
Alex Motch had a fine night with 6 goals, almost matched by his teammate Alex Oserowsky who had 4.

Webb City Cardinals – 1
College Heights – 0
The Cardinal’s squeaked by their small school neighbor to the South, Austin Doran getting the game-winner.
