AC St Louis Face LA Galaxy Tonight In US Open Cup

ST. LOUIS, MO (June 29, 2010) – AC St. Louis of the U.S.S.F. Division II Pro League will face the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer tonight in a third-round match in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Kick-of is set for 9:30 p.m. CT from The Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Fans can follow the action on Match Commentary this evening at www.ac-stlouis.com and at lagalaxy.com.

AC St. Louis has advanced to tonight’s game by registering back-to-back 1-0 road wins over the Des Moines Menace and the NSC Minnesota Stars. Tonight will be the first game this season for the Galaxy in this competition. Major League Soccer teams enter the U.S. Open Cup in the third-round, just as English Premier League teams enter the FA Cup in the third round. Los Angeles has previously won the U.S. Open Cup in 2001 and 2005. The Galaxy have an all-time record of 4-1 in third-round matches.

Tonight’s matchup is one of polar opposites in the standings of professional soccer in the United States. The Los Angeles Galaxy enter tonight’s game with the best record in Major League Soccer, 10-1-3, plus the Galaxy have allowed only four goals throughout their MLS season. Meanwhile, AC St. Louis is at the foot of the U.S.S.F. Division II table with a mark of 2-7-2. However, AC St. Louis has turned their slow start around by recording a 4-3-2 record in all competitions since May 1. Furthermore, St. Louis is unbeaten and un-scored upon in their last four outings.

On a related note, AC St Louis has a new head coach in Dale Schilly who is the man that lured Jeremy Alumbaugh to St Louis. Schilly previously has overseen the club formerly known as Metro United, now St. Louis Scott Gallagher Illinois, for the past 15 years. Schilly has 14 years of experience as a head coach with the Region II Olympic Development program, and has over 25 years of coaching experience at the youth and collegiate levels. This is his first head coaching role with a professional team.

“I was excited about the opportunity to work here in St. Louis, my hometown,” said Schilly. “I want to help develop the pro game in this area. It is something that this community has been starving for quite a while. I am looking forward to helping out.”

The Springfield Soccer Club is pleased to announce that beginning January 1, 2010 Eric Sorlie (pictured at left) will be assuming the roles and responsibilities of Director of Soccer Operations. Eric will be responsible for all day-to-day operations of the club both on and off the field. Current Director of Soccer Operations Jeremy Alumbaugh (center) will move into the role of Technical Advisor for the Springfield Soccer Club.

Along with this change is the announcement that Jeremy Alumbaugh has accepted a full-time position with St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Metro. Alumbaugh will serve as the Director of Player Development and Assistant to the Development Academy Director beginning January 1, 2010. “Jeremy will be a tremendous addition to the St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Metro Staff and Program. He was the moving force behind the scenes during the height of the Chicago Magic. After coming to Springfield, he then facilitated the ascendancy of the Springfield Soccer Club to a level of national prominence. He possesses finely honed insights into the game, has keen understanding of the administrative side of the business and develops teams that win.” said Dale Schilly, Program Director for St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Metro.

St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Metro is one of 77 clubs in the country that are members of US Soccer Development Academy which begins its’ third year of competition in September. The Development Academy is focused on improving the every day training environment for elite players, so they can fulfill their potential as international, professional or collegiate soccer players. Clubs in SLSG-Metro’s division include; Colorado Rapids, Colorado Rush, Real Coloroado, Chicago Magic, Sockers FC Chicago, Chicago Fire, FC Milwaukee, St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Missouri and the Kansas City Wizards-Juniors. Development Academy member clubs only compete against each other and do not participate in State Cup or MRL.

Alumbaugh has served as the Director of Soccer Operations for the Springfield Soccer Club since 2004. During that time the club moved into the Midwest Regional League, KC Heartland Soccer League, captured two MYSA State Cup Championships, three USYS Regional Championship appearances and one US Club Region Championship. Off the field the club is in its’ third year of having their own indoor training facility and offices. “First of all, the club is very excited for Jeremy. The role he will have with the St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Metro Club and Academy is a perfect step for him to continue up the ladder. He is one of the best coaches I have been associated with.” said Joe Kofron, Springfield Soccer Club Board of Directors-President.

“This is a bittersweet day. The past five years have been an unbelievable time here with the Springfield Soccer Club. Through the vision and support of the Board of Directors, to the dedication of the coaching staff and obviously the work rate and commitment of our players and parents we have all built this club into one of the most complete clubs in the Midwest.” said Alumbaugh.

The club has also reached over 100 alumni competing at the collegiate soccer level. “I’m very excited to begin this new opportunity with SLSG-Metro and be involved in the Development Academy. It also is important to me that the growth of the Springfield Soccer Club continues. I’m pleased to be staying on in the Technical Advisor role through the 2009-10 season where hopefully I can continue to bring insight and ideas to the club and help ensure a smooth transition process for everyone involved.” Kofron also echoed the thoughts of Alumbaugh. “I also believe that our club will continue to benefit from him being involved with the academy side of things. He will be able to bring back invaluable knowledge to us as our Technical Advisor. As sad as we are to lose him on a full-time basis it is a real compliment to him and the entire Springfield Soccer Club to have someone get the recognition he deserves.” said Kofron.

The Springfield Soccer Club and Lake Country Soccer hosted the Greater Springfield Area Sports Commission Champions Challenge Soccer Tournament March 8-9, 2008. While the early week weather (snow, rain) made the preparations a difficult task, the weekend weather opened up with sunny skies and great soccer.

Over 140 teams competed in what has become the premier pre-season tournament in the sub-region. “This is two years in a row that Metro United has attended the Champions Challenge and we have been impressed by the facilities, organization and competition. The Springfield Soccer Club has attracted great teams and clubs from throughout the area and Lake Country Soccer has tremendous facilities. said Dale Schilly Program Director for Metro United of Southern Illinois.

The majority of the teams participating in the event came from outside the Springfield area, which meant it was difficult to find a hotel room or an empty table in popular restaurants in town during the weekend. Springfield Soccer Club would like to thank the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau as well as the local hotel and motels who served as great hosts for the out of town guests.

On the field there were a few local teams who participated, but the only club to have teams advance out of bracket play into semi-finals and finals was the host Springfield Soccer Club. On the boys side the U11Red, U12Red, U13Red, U14 teams all advanced to the Finals before falling and receiving 2nd Place. The U15 I team captured the Championship by defeating Lou Fusz SC from St. Louis. The Springfield Soccer Club girls’ teams were not to be outdone with the U10 Girls capturing 2nd Place and the U12Red Girls losing in the semi-finals via the dreaded penalty kick shootout.

Big thanks go to all of the parents from the Springfield Soccer Club who volunteered their time to make the weekend a success. “People don’t realize the amount of time it takes from volunteers to make a tournament run successfully. Our parents were outstanding in helping as site coordinators, field marshals, etc. This is two years in a row that teams have commented that they felt welcome and appreciated and they will be back again next year.” said Jeremy Alumbaugh Director of Soccer Operations for the Springfield Soccer Club.

Springfield Soccer Club would also like to recognize the efforts of the Lake Country Soccer staff in making this event happen, despite the less than ideal weather conditions. Also, thanks to the Greater Springfield Area Sports Commission for sponsoring the tournament.
