Springfield SC vs Lou Fusz Popovic – U17 Missouri State Soccer Final from oleolson on Vimeo.

Got it done Sunday afternoon when I should have been outside or at least getting something productive done :)

PRESS RELEASE
Springfield S.C. U-17 Boys Claim Back to Back MYSA State Cup Championships

Springfield Soccer ClubThe Springfield Soccer Club 90/91 (Under 17) Boys claimed their second consecutive Missouri Youth Soccer Association State Cup Championship by defeating Lou Fusz-Popovic in penalty kicks 5-4 at the Scott Gallagher Soccer Complex in St. Louis, MO May 10th. By winning the MYSA State Cup Championship the team has earned the right to represent Missouri at the US Youth Soccer Region II Championships in Rockford, IL June 20-25, 2008. Sixteen teams will compete in pool play to determine the Regional Champion and advance to the US Youth Soccer National Championships July 22-27, 2008 in North Little Rock, AR.

The MYSA Championship game was a tightly contested affair with Springfield S.C. 90/91 taking the early lead off a Ryan Moses free kick from the top of the eighteen yard box. Moses delicately bent the ball over the wall into the upper ninety of the goal. Minutes later Lou Fusz would answer to make the game even at 1-1. A thirty minute lightning delay extended the first half and the game remained tied 1-1 going into halftime. The second half saw opportunities for both teams with Springfield S.C. 90/91 having a few good looks at the goal.

Still tied at the conclusion of regular time the game went into two fifteen overtime periods. Having the better of play during overtime Springfield S.C. 90/91 was unable to find a goal. The game then went to penalty kicks where both teams made three of their five kicks, forcing the game into golden goal penalty kicks. Both teams made their first kick and Springfield S.C. 90/91 made their second attempt, while Lou Fusz missed their second one and that secured the MYSA State Cup Championship for Springfield S.C. 90/91.

Having achieved their second MYSA State Cup Championship the team is now looking forward to improving their 2007 Semi-Finalist status at Regionals. “Without a doubt this victory was a tremendous statement by the players. They have stayed committed during the past several months at it paid off today. It was a total team effort, but when it got to penalty kicks Christopher Tombridge our goalkeeper took over.” said Cory Carr Head Coach.

Team members include; Christopher Tombridge (Kickapoo), Steven Curti (Carthage), Ryan Squires (Glendale), Blake Aggus (Joplin), Tyler Bennett (Kickapoo), Ryan Partch (Glendale), Caleb Collier (Kickapoo), Matt Medley (Parkview), Ian Newport (Glendale), Devon Newport (Glendale), Grant Bollig (Lebanon), Ian Kennedy (Kickapoo), Graham Basecke (Glendale), Mason Morawitz (Hickman), Brock Ruggeri (Kickapoo), Ryan Moses (Kickapoo), Tim Griffin (Parkview), Bryce Collier (Hillcrest). The team is coached by Cory Carr and Jeremy Alumbaugh.

Springfield SC Representing At Dallas Cup

MRL U17 Springfield SC vs Vardar SCThat’s right, our local boys have been invited to participate in the most significant Youth Soccer tournament held in the US. It’s a week long event that opens with a FIFA Reception (not US Soccer, but FIFA) on Saturday and today’s schedule includes the first two of a series of competitive Super League international youth matches

3:00PM Sao Paulo FC (Brazil) vs Andromeda SC (USA) Super Group Game
5:00PM Welcome World – Opening Ceremonies
7:00PM Liverpool FC (England) vs FK Slavija (Bosnia/Herzegovina) Super Group Game

Our boys are in Bracket A of the U17 Competition. They’ll play three games, one each Monday-Wednesday this week, against a tough, competitive line up that includes Tigres (Monterrey, Mexico), OSC Rage (Orange, California) and the North Texas Strikers (Dallas, Texas). SSC is 1 of 32 International teams competing in this age group. The winner of the bracket advances to Quarterfinal play on Friday, with the semifinal and final scheduled for Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Coach Cory Carr is being assisted this week by Eric Sorlie and Zach Alumbaugh. I asked Club Director Jeremy Alumbaugh to provide some background and thoughts on any goals the team, and club, have set for this tournament:

Dallas Cup 2008 logoThe Dallas Cup is by far the most prestigious youth soccer tournament in the United States if not the world. If you look at the number of professional international youth teams who are in attendance and then factor in every top youth club in North America is represented it is quite special.

For the Springfield Soccer Club and this entire area to be represented in this tournament is frankly amazing. Look at the population of the teams we will be competing against and to think that Springfield, Missouri is there with them is something no soccer person from this area would have imagined a few years ago. Congratulations to Coach Cory Carr and all of the players on this accomplishment.

For a team from a northern climate, it is always a difficult task to compete at the Dallas Cup. All three of our opponents are from southern climates where they have the luxury of constant outdoor competition and training. Hopefully, our recent run of outdoor games and good weather will allow us to compete. Dallas Cup is a tremendous tuneup for our upcoming MRL games and MYSA State Cup.

I know I’m going to regret not finding a way to join these boys for a week of soccer in Dallas. Hopefully Zach will find time to provide daily updates on the Springfield SC blog while he and the boys are in Texas. Otherwise we might miss stories like this one, about David Beckham as a 13 year old youth player at the Dallas Cup. He talks about his experience here as well. Missouri Youth Soccer Association Annual Meeting Wrap Up

Courtesy of Kelly Ross, Executive Director of Lake Country Soccer and newly appointed Southern District Commissioner. Thanks!

MYSA LogoMissouri Youth Soccer held its 2008 annual general meeting and coaches workshop this past weekend in Independence, MO.

Coaching seminars were well run with the usual focus on small sided play and organization for the offense, midfield and defensive play. Ian Mulliner, Director of Coaching for the Illinois Youth Soccer Association was the keynote invited presenter, who put on two very good sessions. Dave Musso, women’s head coach at Quincy University was also a presenter. Attendance at this year’s event was extremely light, as compared to previous year’s event. One of the possible causes of drop in attendance, there was a world class coaching seminar also in the Kansas City area which included headliner Anson Dorrance as a key note presenter.

Other sessions which were conducted included Risk Management, a round table forum with the MYSA executive committee, a state cup forum on changes in state cup operations and other national issues which will affect state cup tournaments within US Youth Soccer, a session on the drafting an organization’s constitution and by-laws and district meetings.

Kelly Ross has accepted the Commissioner title for the Southern District after Jim McCarthy announced he was not seeking re-election for an additional term. No Alternate Commissioner has yet to be elected or appointed for the Southern District. A district commissioner serves as a liaison on behalf of the clubs designated to a geographic location by MYSA, on the state board. The appointment is for a two year term. The alternate commissioner’s term has one year remaining.

The MYSA awards banquet was held Saturday evening and included state awards including the Southern District Volunteer of the Year. Duane Moses, who has been a long time volunteer at Lake Country Soccer, was this year’s award recipient. Cory Carr, boys head coach for Springfield Soccer Club was selected as the MYSA Boys Competitive Coach of the Year. Other awards presented included the young referees of the year (boys and girls) other district volunteers of the year, the girls competitive coach of the year and the President’s Award, which went to Mike Summers (KC / board member) for his more than 16 years of involvement with MYSA. Ian Mulliner gave the keynote address at the awards banquet, while MYSA director of coaching served as master of ceremonies for the festivities.

A vendor area was available to attendees. The vendor area is an opportunity for businesses and/or organizations to promote and showcase their products and services for the soccer community.

The annual general meeting was conducted Sunday morning and lasted just 32 minutes; probably the shortest AGM in the history of MYSA. The state board meeting held afterwards, was a lengthy affair with a decision regarding the MYSA National Cup Series and the Toyota State Championship Cup which will be sure to generate considerable controversy for Missouri’s competitive teams. The State Association will be issuing a formal statement regarding the National Cup Series and the Toyota State Championship Cup in just a matter of days.

Next year’s AGM will be held in Columbia or Jefferson City as a matter of convenience for representatives from clubs across the state.

For the game – Kelly

Cory Carr Named Missouri Youth Soccer Association Boys Competitive Coach of the Year

PRESS RELEASE

MO State Cup: U16 Springfield SC vs St Louis SCThe Springfield Soccer Club is pleased to announce that Cory Carr will receive the Missouri Youth Soccer Association Boys Competitive Coach of the Year Award for 2008 at the MYSA AGM in February. Cory was selected from a deep pool of qualified candidates and was chosen for his commitment to the qualities that MYSA looks for when handing out this award. MYSA recognizes that coaching is more than teaching tactics and technique; it is also about teaching life lessons off of the field. Employed full-time by Integrity Home Health Care and a husband and father, Cory has to balance his life in order to give his players what they demand and deserve.

A native of Houston, Texas Cory attended Klein High School where he competed in soccer for the nationally recognized Bearkats. His club soccer playing skills were developed by the Houston Texans and he continued his soccer career at Missouri State University (then SMS) from 1993-1996. Upon graduation from Missouri State University, Cory attended Southwest Baptist University and began his coaching career helping a number of local club teams and high school programs, before settling in with the Springfield Soccer Club.

“One of Cory’s biggest strengths as a coach is that he has paid his dues.” said Jeremy Alumbaugh Director of Soccer Operations for the Springfield Soccer Club. “So many people that get involved in coaching want it all right away, without learning from experience. Cory is the opposite, constantly learning and working outside of his comfort zone which has made him a better coach today than he was yesterday.”

Cory currently serves as a Staff Coach with the Springfield Soccer Club where he is the head coach of
the U17 team and assists with the U15 and U18 Boys teams.

2007 saw a significant achievement for the Springfield Soccer Club as the 90/91 team (current U17 team) captured the first ever MYSA State Cup Championship for a team from Southwest Missouri. Cory has been coaching the team since they were U13, constantly building them one season at a time into a top 10 ranked team in the nation.

The Springfield Soccer Club is very proud of Cory Carr receiving the MYSA Boys Competitive Coach of the Year Award because of what it stands for both on and off the field.

Editors note – Cory and his wife welcomed their first child very recently (mid December?). It has been a very good year for this young man, with this award offering the icing on a very tasty cake. Well done Cory!
