US Soccer Roster Named For Game Against Mexico On Wednesday

World Cup 2010 logoHead Coach Bob Bradley named the roster for the Qualifying game against Mexico on Wednesday. Unfortunately Jack Jewsbury is in Florida now training with the KC Wizards following his six weeks with the Nationals.

Eighteen of the 20 players on the roster participated in the first two rounds of World Cup qualifying last year. Bradley has called on a dozen players from foreign-based clubs, led by team captain Carlos Bocanegra and 2008 U.S. Soccer Male Athlete of the Year Tim Howard, who is unbeaten in four matches against Mexico and has posted an impressive five shutouts in five all-time World Cup qualifying appearances. Clint Dempsey finished 2008 tied for the team lead in goal scored (4), with all of his strikes coming in World Cup qualifying action. DaMarcus Beasley is one of four players on the roster who started in the last World Cup qualifier against Mexico, scoring the insurance goal in the 2-0 win on Sept. 3, 2005, in Columbus. Oguchi Onyewu, who set up Steve Ralston for the game-winner that day, scored a career-high three goals for the U.S. in 2008, including a header against Mexico in the 2-2 draw in Houston. Michael Bradley, who scored the game-winning goal in the 3-0 semifinal round qualifying win against Trinidad & Tobago, tied with Heath Pearce for the most appearances for the team in 2008, each starting in 11 of 14 matches. José Francisco Torres – who plays in the Mexican Primera División – is the only player on the roster who is not based in Europe or the United States.

More importantly, we need to find a new place to watch the game on Wednesday. I’m sorry to say that Coester’s is closed, some say temporarily, only time will tell. I’m going to approach The Fox & Hound, I created some real business for them during the State Cup (and World Cup) in 2006. If you have another suggestion, let me know and I’d be happy to approach them.

MLS Thursday Night Soccer At Coesters – KC Wizards vs Red Bull NY

As a warm up to the Beijing Olympics, and to continue developing a local facility where the soccer community can come together to enjoy broadcast games, Coester’s and SGFsoccer.com is initiating MSL Thursday’s this week with a double-header!

KC Wizards LogoThe KC Wizards host Red Bull NY at 7:00 pm, available only on Direct Kick. Coester’s will be showing both this game as well as the weekly Thursday night game shown on HDnet (as in High Definition!) at 10:00 pm this week. It’s a battle for 1st place in the Western Conference between the LA Galaxy and Chivas US. I’m rooting for Lance Parker (MSU 2008) and his Chivas teammates!

There will be drink specials for the adults – any shot that includes Red Bull as an ingredient. There will also be a daily food special. Coester’s is a full-service, non-smoking restaurant that offers several seating areas and is family friendly. Bring your son or daughter out to enjoy the game with you, I know you’ll both have fun.

The Wizards lost in penalty kicks to the Seattle Sounders last night in their US Open Cup quarterfinal match. They made the decision to hold back the regulars to save them for the game against Red Bull which is coming off what Ives feels could be The Worst Week in Red Bulls/MetroStars History?

A blown lead on an absolutely embarrassing mistake, A 2-0 loss to a USL-2 team AND a 4-0 blowout loss on the 4th of July. These three events took place in a seven-day span, leading me to wonder if there is any way this wasn’t the worst week in the history of the club.

Good news for the Wizards who hope to continue their recent positive trend. Come out and join us!

KC Wizards Update

KC Wizards Logo Unbeaten in their last three games, the resurgent Kansas City Wizards look to keep rolling on the Fourth of July when they take on FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park (6:00 p.m. CT; HDNet). A win over Dallas would bring the Wizards back to the .500 mark and into the thick of the playoff race. A good choice if rain keeps you indoors tomorrow.

Coester’s will be closed for the holiday so no viewing action there tomorrow I’m sorry to say but how about next Thursday, July 10th when they take on Red Bull NY! There will be a double-header that evening, with KC vs Red Bull at 7:00 pm followed by LA Galaxy vs Chivas US at 10:00 pm. Both games should offer wide open play and I’m working on getting some specials set up, as well as some give aways. Add it to your calendar!

Continuing with the update:
The Kansas City Wizards have announced that forward Josh Wolff has rejoined the club, signing a 4-year contract. Wolff, 31, played 80 games with the Wizards from 2003-2006, scoring 27 goals (T5th in Wizards history) and tallying 20 assists (7th in Wizards history).

Wolff played most recently in 34 games over the last two seasons (2 goals) with 1860 Munich in the German Second Bundesliga and currently has 52 caps and 9 goals for the U.S. National Team.

They need the reinforcements, with a new game on the schedule:
The Kansas City Wizards rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Carolina RailHawks of USL-1 4-2 Tuesday in extra time. Kansas City advances to the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against the Seattle Sounders (USL-1). Kansas City will travel to Seattle next Tuesday for a match at Qwest Field, time still TBA. Forwards Ivan Trujillo and Claudio Lopez starred Saturday’s victory after coming on in the second half.

What about Jack Jewsbury you ask? Well, he’s been moved back to right back, from his holding midfield position, to solidify the defense. Must be working, with the 3 game unbeaten streak the Wizards are touting. Jack’s started all 13 games played this year, and he has a pair of goals and a pair of assists. I’m thinking rather than signing Wolff, they should have considered moving him up top and getting another defender. But I’m a mere scribe, although Ives appears to agree they could have chosen a different path. BTW, if you follow the link to Jack’s roster sheet, you’ll be able to see video of both of his goals and below that, a “promo video” that is all Jackie.

Southwest Soccer All-Stars Take The Field This Evening

Azzuri Shut Out!

OK, admit it. How many of you have seen a Euro 2008 game so far? I was in Jeff City on business today, thus the delay in posting. Also the reason I missed this!

The Netherlands ended a 30-year wait for a victory over Italy in emphatic fashion as they began their Group C campaign with a rousing 3-0 win against the world champions in Berne.

I found out Sunday at Coester’s that ESPN2 is showing the best game of the day on delay so set the VCR/DVR for 1:00 am and the replay. Can someone share a copy with me? Burn it to DVD from that DVR of yours folks.

Spain vs Russia at 10:50 am Tuesday. I’m holding out for Sweden vs Greece at 1:45 pm myself. Who do you think I’ll be rooting for? Yah, hey dere, Ole be rooting for Svenska!

Coesters. We had the USA game on Sunday evening (they looked good against Argentina, didn’t they) and the basketball fans had to wait until our game ended before the NBA Finals got the audio feed in the restaurant. We’ve got a special situation developing here folks, Mark’s providing a great service to the soccer community. I’m reading about guys in Winston-Salem North Carolina (ACC Soccer country) who can’t get the sound turned on. Come out and support and justify his investment in supporting us!

We had our first Soccer Mom sighting on Sunday. Gary and Debbie Loyd were out with Evan (Greenwood/SSC) and his brother. Come out and represent folks!

The Worlds Game Comes To Springfield

Pretty good week coming up folks.

The US Men’s National team has a pair of games this week. The first on Wednesday against Spain, followed by the game against current World #1 Argentina in Giant’s Stadium. I’m aware of a few folks headed East for that game, hopefully we’ll have some soccer adventure stories to share with you afterwards.

The European Championships open on Saturday. If you are unfamiliar with these games, the best description is that it’s the European mini-World Cup, as the rest of the world watches the European national teams battle for bragging rights before they face off in the final World Cup qualifying for South Africa 2010.

As always, I’ve added all of the games to my Soccer Calendar so go subscribe or pick your favorites and add them to your calendar, it’s a simple as clicking and downloading the info for import into your calendar.

I’ll also be adding Events to my SGFsoccer.com Facebook Page for key games which for me includes any game with Sweden! I see there’s already one guy who’s planning on watching the two opening games at Coester’s on Saturday. Hosts Switzerland face off against the Czech Republic at 11am and Portugal face Turkey at 1:45 pm.

Remember, the best place in Springfield to enjoy the World’s game with fellow fans is at Coester’s, located at 631 S Kimbrough, just West of the MSU Basketball stadium.

And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention there are a pair of Springfield Demize home games on Friday and Saturday this week. I’ll be back with more details tomorrow.

We Rock The House

For those who missed it, I’ve posted a short video on my Facebook page that gives you a sense of the crowd we had at Coester’s today for the Champions League Final.

I don’t expect nearly as big a crowd but there’ll be a group of us out on Saturday night at 9:30 pm to catch the KC Wizards at the LA Galaxy. HDnet is broadcasting the game, should be a good way to start your evening (if you’re younger than me).

Chelsea vs Manchester United – Today at Coester’s

Join us today at Coester’s for the Champions League (EPL) final. Pre-game is at 1:00 pm with kickoff around 1:40 pm. The game is being broadcast live from St Petersburg and features an all English Premier League final. I’m expecting 30 plus folks to be in attendance, it should be an excellent match between a pair of teams that know each other well and always have something to prove.

Coester’s is located at 631 S Kimbrough, just West of the basketball stadium on the Missouri State campus. It’s a full-service restaurant, smoke free and features 22 big screen HD TV’s, the majority of which will be tuned to the game with the audio broadcast included.

It’s Heating Up In These Parts

Sorry for the delay in posting, I’m a bit hampered right now with what I assume is Carpal Tunnel. Index finger in tingling and the right wrist is quite tender. So rest is the answer and we know its too important a time in the season to sit so…

I’ll be at Cooper this evening to catch the Middle School Final between Pershing and Catholic. Game time is 7:00 pm. Come see the future.

The sectional game between Ozark and Glendale will be played at 3:30 pm on Tuesday, May 20th, on Cooper field #1 at Lake Country Soccer in Springfield, MO. The time change is due to the fact that Glendale’s graduation ceremonies are that evening at 8:00 pm.

Springfield Catholic heads to Waynesville for a rematch with last years foes, St James. At the more traditional start time of 6:00 pm on Tuesday.

The Springfield Demize host the KC Brass Thursday, I’m looking forward to seeing this years squad. The Demize have opened 0-2 to start the season while KC got their first win yesterday when they split a pair of games in Colorado. So both teams are hungry to get things moving which bodes well for us. That, plus how about this weather, eh!

The All-Star rosters are pretty much set, now it’s just getting the final t’s crossed and i’s dotted while wearing my wrist brace. Hang in there, I’ll have it before the day ends. Plus photos of the Middle School game.

Oh, and I almost forgot – Chelsea takes on Manchester United one last time on Wednesday. The Champions League Final is all EPL this year and it looks like we’ll have the largest crowd of the season out to enjoy the game at Coester’s. I expect 30 plus. It’s a smoke-free restaurant with 22 big screen TV’s folks. If you’re a HS senior, come join us. If your a college player home now, come join us.

And congrats to all of the area seniors who graduate this week!

Updates From The World Of Soccer

Close to home

The Rock Bridge girls soccer team’s game against Smith-Cotton in the semifinals of the Class 2 District 10 Tournament was postponed Tuesday night because of lightning. The game was stopped with 26:09 remaining in the first half and the score tied at 0. It will resume at that point Wednesday at 6 p.m. on Susie Ditzfeld Memorial Field.

Top-seeded Jefferson City awaits the winner in the finals. The district championship game will be played Thursday at 6:30 p.m. as originally scheduled. The Jays (12-8-1) advanced by defeating Helias 2-1 on penalty kicks in Tuesday’s first semifinal.

Nelson Morgan was in the process of coaching the final home soccer game of his long coaching career at Waynesville High School. And for his efforts he was carded.
