Springfield Players Clash In D3 Tournament

Marlow, Carver, Aiken, Griffin at Emory

Marlow, Carver, Aiken, T Griffin at Emory

This story was filed by former Emory (and Parkview) player Patrick Carver

An early goal from Titans of Illinois Wesleyan University was not enough to take down the Eagles of Emory University today in Atlanta, Georgia.

Illinois Wesleyan features two players from Springfield in Tim Griffin (Parkview) and Tom Marlow (Parkview). Marlow’s minutes were limited as he is coming from a pair of injuries that kept him out a week of pre-season. Griffin played for most of the game and looked dangerous with the ball at his feet, especially in transition. The goal from Sam Peniak of Illinois Wesleyan came in the 17th minute after a lovely through ball and a burst of speed to outrace the Emory defender.

Emory got back in the game in the 39th minute with a fabulous goal from Senior defender Adam Waxman. The pace and frequent substitution of Emory’s attackers seemed to take a toll on the Titans towards the end of each half. Despite this, Emory still struggled to put the ball in the back of the net but clearly looked more dangerous than last year’s squad. Set piece goal machine Jake Graetz scored the game winner in the 67th minute off an indirect kick from Zach Samuels. Sophomore defender Andrew Natalino finished the scoring in the final minute of play with a tremendous run from the back and exchange with right side midfielder Chris Howie.

A constant threat when on the field for Emory was Springfield Greenwood product Chris Aiken. The freshmen used his pace and size to his advantage, creating a number of dangerous opportunities for the Eagles. If he can find a way to convert some of the chances he’s creating for himself, he could have a real impact on the success of the team going forward.

The final two games of the tournament are tomorrow.

Congratulations To Aiken, Stewart and Donson

The High School basketball All-Star game was played Saturday. The teams are split between City schools and Area schools. There were three Southwest Soccer All-Stars who also played in the basketball event.

Chris Aiken, Greenwood Blue Jays, played for the City team which won 97-95 after three OT’s. Doesn’t look like Chris scored in the game but then again, someone has to pass the ball to Trey Starks of Hillcrest who scored 40.

Shelby Stewart, Parkview Vikings, played on the winning City team while scoring 11 points.

Najee Donson, Logan-Rogersville Wildcats, played for the Area team and scoreed 3 points in the 56-51 loss.

I’ll have information packets and a registration form sorted out Monday for the players in this years game. I apologize for the delay, this is still volunteer gig and I’ve been trying to pay some bills with client work. If you haven’t contacted me, or added yourself to the Facebook event, please send me an email at ole@SGFsoccer.com Thanks, see you in a week!

10/3 Southwest Missouri High School Soccer Report

    Willard Tigers Tournament

Willard Soccer Fall Classic: Bolivar Liberators vs Hillcrest HornetsBolivar Liberators – 2
Hillcrest Hornets – 1
Elation for the Liberators as Bradley Stillwagon (pictured in white, defended by Radu Mariuta) scores 2 goals in the final 3 minutes of regulation to defeat the Hornets. The Hornet’s took the lead in the 53rd on some brilliant combination play, with Ballhorn winning not one, but two 50/50 balls, a quick no look pass into the path of Bryce Collier who’s run and shot was deflected, with Michael Freeman following the play and finishing the rebound.

The initial goal by Stillwagon was from Kyle Slagle’s free kick from the left side, headed down and deflected past the keeper off of a defender in the 77th. In the 78th, a long flip throw by sophomore Matt Magana gave Stillwagon a second opportunity he finished confidently. The assist by Magana gave him 35 in 1 1/2 years and ties the career record at Bolivar.

Willard Soccer Fall Classic: Cassville Wildcats vs New Covenant WarriorsCassville Wildcats – 3
New Covenant Warriors – 0
These two teams met September 6th, with the Wildcats earning a close 3-2 win after which the Warriors ran off a string of 8 straight wins until losing by a goal to Warrensburg last week. So there was plenty of pride at stake in this burgeoning rivalry. The difference today was the play of goalkeeper Michael Rush (pictured, stopping Jeremy Weimer) who stopped anything that came into his box today, regardless of the hazards. The Wildcats got a pair of goals from Uziel Franco, one of the top forwards in the region, as well as a PK goal by Omar Valenzuela.

Monett Cubs – 4
Webb City Cardinals – 2 (at halftime)

Saturday’s schedule has Bolivar vs Cassville as well as Hillcrest vs NCA at 8:00 am. At 10:00 am Willard vs Monett and Logan-Rogersville vs Webb City (I”m guessing on these last two, based upon the half time score of the Cubs vs Cardinals). 3rd place game at noon, Championship at 2:00 pm.

    Camdenton Lakers Tournament

Springfield Catholic – 3
West Plains Zizzers – 0

Camdenton Lakers – 5 (OT)
Hannibal Pirates – 4
The Lakers got the game winner 30 seconds into 1st OT

Fulton Hornets – 1
Sullivan - 0

============
Parkview Vikings – 3
Nixa Eagles – 0
Jared Moore scores a hat trick in the first half to lead the Vikings past their District rivals. Tim Griffin assisted on all 3 goals.

Glendale Falcons – 2 (in PKs)
Morton (IL) -1
From the Gateway City Soccer Classic. The Falcons win via sudden death penalty kicks after 1-1 tie in regulation. 1st half dominated by Morton who led 1-0 at half. Glendale comes out with more intensity second half to tie on a Devon Newport goal.

Central vs Warrensburg

Greenwood Blue Jays
– 8
Logan-Rogersville Wildcats – 0
Greenwood goals were scored by Chris Aiken (2), Stuart Beezley (3), Matt Cook and Brad Cook (2). Assists credited to Chris Aiken, Stuart Beezley, Patrick Connor and Matt Cook (2)
