Crowder Roughriders Add A Dozen For 2009 Season

From the Neosho Daily News:

Bryce Collier college signingAfter getting a belated start on recruiting last year, Crowder College soccer coach Brad Smith had specific goals when he was recruiting players this year – he wanted to get faster.

“I thought we were slow and we were not able to score much last year,” Smith said. “I wanted to improve in those areas. We return everybody pretty much, so the goal was to find people that will help make us better and deeper.”

Crowder was 6-10-3 in its inaugural season and returns 16 players, including most of the starters.

bryce collier, ben ballhornThe new group of Roughriders includes: forwards Bryce Collier of Springfield Hillcrest (pictured above signing with Coach Smith back right) and Harrisonville’s Jeremy Savage; a bunch of midfielders in Ben Ballhorn of Springfield Hillcrest (pictured in orange at right with Collier), Lebanon’s Grant Bollig, George Fuente of University High in Waco, Texas, Josh Jesperson of Neosho, Logan Landis from Carl Junction and Neosho’s Aaron Tracy.

The defenders signed include Javier Albarran of Rogers, Ark., Trevor Pedigo of Springfield Kickapoo, Neosho’s Austin Williams and Irvin Sosa of Fayetteville, Ark.

Smith noted he expects to sign a couple more players as well.

“We have kids we think are good and our speed should be better,” Smith said. “We need to figure out how to play together. We added numbers in different places and I think we should be better.”

For some background, Bryce Collier, Grant Bollig and Trevor Pedigo are teammates on the Springfield SC 90/91 team that are two-time defending state champions in Missouri. Both Collier and Bollig have played in the forward position as well as outside midfielder for SSC while Pedigo has played outside midfield and defense.

Bollig and Collier are also Southwest All-Stars for 2009. The game will be played Monday June 15th this year.

    Willard Tigers Tournament

Willard Soccer Fall Classic: Bolivar Liberators vs Hillcrest HornetsBolivar Liberators – 2
Hillcrest Hornets – 1
Elation for the Liberators as Bradley Stillwagon (pictured in white, defended by Radu Mariuta) scores 2 goals in the final 3 minutes of regulation to defeat the Hornets. The Hornet’s took the lead in the 53rd on some brilliant combination play, with Ballhorn winning not one, but two 50/50 balls, a quick no look pass into the path of Bryce Collier who’s run and shot was deflected, with Michael Freeman following the play and finishing the rebound.

The initial goal by Stillwagon was from Kyle Slagle’s free kick from the left side, headed down and deflected past the keeper off of a defender in the 77th. In the 78th, a long flip throw by sophomore Matt Magana gave Stillwagon a second opportunity he finished confidently. The assist by Magana gave him 35 in 1 1/2 years and ties the career record at Bolivar.

Willard Soccer Fall Classic: Cassville Wildcats vs New Covenant WarriorsCassville Wildcats – 3
New Covenant Warriors – 0
These two teams met September 6th, with the Wildcats earning a close 3-2 win after which the Warriors ran off a string of 8 straight wins until losing by a goal to Warrensburg last week. So there was plenty of pride at stake in this burgeoning rivalry. The difference today was the play of goalkeeper Michael Rush (pictured, stopping Jeremy Weimer) who stopped anything that came into his box today, regardless of the hazards. The Wildcats got a pair of goals from Uziel Franco, one of the top forwards in the region, as well as a PK goal by Omar Valenzuela.

Saturday’s schedule has Bolivar vs Cassville as well as Hillcrest vs NCA at 8:00 am. At 10:00 am Willard vs Monett and Logan-Rogersville vs Webb City (I”m guessing on these last two, based upon the half time score of the Cubs vs Cardinals). 3rd place game at noon, Championship at 2:00 pm.
