Central Lady Bulldogs 2012 District Champions

Central Bulldogs Win District, Face Glendale Tuesday in Sectionals

Central Lady Bulldogs 2012 District Champions
Class 3 District 12 Champions - Central Bulldogs, 2012
Congratulations to the Lady Bulldogs of Central High School who captured their first District soccer championship last week, winning 3-2 against the top-seed Willard Tigers.

The win came in the second overtime of play as the Bulldogs battled back from an 0-2 deficit. Sophomore Aspen Hawkins scored all three of the goals for Central. I’ve included photos from last year’s District semifinal win over Carthage below. Aspen, who is a team captain despite her youth, is #7 in red for those who may be unfamiliar with this dynamo. Who knows, you might even get current photos from the local rag who declared High School soccer is on the rise recently. Let’s hope their actions prove equal to their words…

The team faces off against the Glendale Falcons, the District 11 champions and 3rd place State finishers in 2011, tonight at Harrison Stadium on the Drury University campus. Game time is 6:00 pm.

The winner will advance to Saturday’s Quarterfinal and play the winner of the Columbia Rock Bridge vs Waynesville Tigers Sectional match. That game is being played at 6:00 pm in Waynesville. The next loss for the Bruins will be the final game for their Head Coach, Marc Van Dover, who has announced he is retiring. Excellent article in the Columbia Missourian on Coach Van Dover and the team. The assistant coach is Ann Felts, who starred at Rolla and North Carolina and is also ‘retiring’ as she and her husband are moving to San Antonio this Summer. Ann was featured on this site a few years ago in a top-notch story by Kurt Austin, now with Sporting KC.

The 2011 Missouri State Cup will be held June 11 – 16, 2011 in St. Louis, MO at the SLYSA and Sportport complexes. The Missouri State Cup is the first leg of the US Youth National Championship Series. All age groups (Under 13 up to Under 19) will participate June 11th – 16th. The 2012 Girls State Cup will be played in the Fall later this year as MYSA separates the tournaments by gender.

The state and regional events are a part of the annual US Youth Soccer National Championship Series that features over 10,000 teams, each competing for a chance to advance from state, to region and ultimately the national championship. In addition to the competition, teams are highlighting their talents for numerous college coaches that use the events as a primary recruiting tool.

State champions advance to one of four US Youth Soccer Regional Championships, where 926 teams will compete. The Region II Tournament (Midwest) will be held June 24-29 in Fox Cities, WI.

The National Championship field consists of these regional champions and National League representatives.

There is ONE girls teams from Southwest Missouri participating this year, the Springfield SC U15 squad that consists primarily of high school freshman and includes players such as:
Aspen Hawkins, Class 3 District 12 offensive player of the year for the Central Bulldogs as well as 1st Team Central Region honors.
Lydia Holtmann, who got the game-winner for the Springfield Catholic squad in the title game this year
Nicole Ortega, who’s 50 yard run past three defenders into the box created the opportunity for Holtmann
Kindra Lierz, who anchored the Glendale Falcons defense from her goalkeeper position while earning Goalkeeper of the Year honors for Class 3 Southwest Region
Miriam Melugin, who started every game in midfield for Kickapoo
Payton DeHart, who scored 12 goals for Nixa, including 5 game-winners
Emma Chilton, who started at outside defender but became a central midfielder for Parkview in their District title run

The team also includes Nikki Bates, Rebecca Burton, Abby Greene, Morgan Henry, Hannah Kofron, Megan Loethen, Taylor Merritt, Kasey Opfer, Jennifer Pittman, Taylor Stamper, Payton DeHart and Kenzie Dunaway.

Coached by Cory Carr, the girls are ranked #7 in Missouri and will begin play Saturday against Futura FC KCFC, the top-ranked team in the state and #5 in Region II. Only one team will advance to the semifinals so Saturday’s game will be critical if they want to advance. WC St Louis Academy is ranked #4 in Missouri and the top-ranked team in Group B, thus the likely semifinal opponent.
