Ozark Conference

The first week of full games, Kickapoo is 1-0 in the Conference going into tonight, courtesy of a win over Lebanon in late March.

Hillcrest Hornets – 0
Camdenton Lakers – 10

Joplin Eagles – 0
Glendale Falcons – 6
The text I got indicated the trio got a duo which I interpret to mean that senior Emily Cline and juniors Molly Brewer and Alix Opfer all scored twice in Tuesday’s game at Joplin. UPDATE – Alix Opfer (2G/1A), Emily Cline (2G), Molly Brewer (2G), Drianna Raff (1A). Glendale JV defeated Joplin Eagles, 3-0.

Lebanon Yellowjackets – 4
West Plains Zizzers – 0
From ZizzerSoccer.com – a couple of good saves by Sammi Phegley kept things close. A 14th minute goal by Jessica Ogle as she beat Phegley just inside the post to give Lebanon a 1-0 halftime lead. The Yellowjackets scored 3 more in the final 10 minutes. Carsyn Beard converted a PK, Abigale Zimmerman was credited with a goal when she came crashing in on a cross and the final goal came on a shot from about 18 yards out.

Kickapoo Chiefs – 4
Waynesville Tigers – 0

Rolla Bulldogs – 3
Parkview Vikings – 2
Rolla got goals from Nicole Howard, Ellen Spooner and Emily Carroll as they held off the visitors. Parkview’s goals were scored by Molly Robb and Holly Messick.

Wednesday Games – Glendale Gets Past Kickapoo

Kickapoo Chiefs – 1
In a tale of two halves, the Chief’s took an early lead this evening when senior Marin Gelsheimer’s long-range stop took one bounce before skipping past the goalkeeper for a goal. Gelsheimer received the ball on a give-and-go with Megan Melugin. Catch it on KOLR10 news tonight! The Chief’s continued with their solid effort, creating more opportunities and winning loose balls consistently. It took special effort by Ashley McWilliams and Alix Opfer to stop a pair of close range opportunities in the second half that might have extended the Chief’s lead. The Falcon’s best opportunity came midway through the half when sophomore Molly Brewer put her shot from 12 yard’s out off the crossbar.

The second half started with an increase in the wind speed and the Falcon’s approach to the game. Whether from a tongue-lashing from Coach Roger’s or a look inside, the Falcon’s decided to play up to their considerable talent level in the second half. The crowd rose in anticipation seven minutes into the half when Lindsey Sprouse broke in alone on the goalkeeper, only to see her shot pushed up and over. A minute later Sprouse took a different approach, with a quick long range shot from 25 yards out in the 48th that fell underneath the crossbar and tied the game. The Falcon’s earned a corner kick 8 minutes later and when the ball popped out of a scrum in the box, sophomore Alix Opfer, who was waiting on the far side, buried her shot for the ultimate game winner. The final goal was scored by junior Emily Cline who won a goal kick that didn’t get far due to the stiff wind. She pushed the ball forward and while moving from left to right at the top of the box, pushed her shot to the far left for the final margin.

Glendale finishes second in the Ozark Conference with an 8-1 record, losing only to Parkview. Kickapoo finishes fifth with a 5-4 record. Pictures can be seen here and below.

Glendale faces Catholic tomorrow night, weather dependent, and then will take the weekend off. Kickapoo faces Branson in the first round of the District 11 playoffs on Saturday evening at Parkview.

Ozark Tigers – 4
Lebanon Yellowjackets – 0
Megan Jenisch scored in the 8th minute, by header, from Megan Gunnel’s service following a corner kick. Junior transfer Shannon Lacker scored a brace and Gunnel’s completed the scoring. Ozark Tiger’s website.

Neosho Wildcats vs Parkview Vikings – canceled

Camdenton Lakers – 10
Central Bulldogs – 0
From Kai Raymer at Lake Sun Leader: Led by Ashleigh Paschel’s hat trick, the Camdenton High School girls’ soccer team stayed hot and won easily 10-0 over Springfield Central on Wednesday.

Camdenton faces Rolla in a rematch this Monday in the Class 3 District 10 tournament in Jefferson City.

Bailey Millington (Glendale 2010) challenged by Katie Shannon (West Plains 2010)

Glendale Falcons – 3
West Plains Zizzers – 0
The Falcon’s offense came out with their usual flair this evening but keeper Sammi Phegley and her defense applied some old-fashioned elbow grease to their effort and were rewarded with some luck as well. Freshman Courtney Cox cleared a ball off the line minutes into the game and the Zizzer’s built off of that with three goal line clearances and two shots that rocketed off of the crossbar.

It’s hard to hold off the Falcon’s for an entire 80 minutes however and sophomore Alix Opfer took matters into her own hands when in the 52nd she skipped around a pair of defenders before slotting her shot past the keeper from just outside the 6 yard box. Once the barriers came down, senior Katie Brewer scored from near the penalty spot in the 54th and Opfer completed her brace in the 76th, burying a shot after Emily Cline’s effort was blocked.

The Falcon’s move to 5-0, 3-0 in the Ozark Conference with a 24-2 goal advantage, in advance of their games at the Kickapoo Shootout this weekend. The Zizzer’s are 3-6 overall, 0-3 in the Conference. They host Mt View Liberty Friday.

Hillcrest Hornets – 0
Rolla Bulldogs – 8
RHS is now 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the OC

Joplin Eagles – 0
Parkview Vikings – 4
The Eagles battled in the first 5, but Anna Withers scored on a corner kick when was cleared 25 out but straight up the middle 8 minutes in. Withers shot it from 25 out, and the keeper got her hands on the ball but could not keep it from crossing the line. Jessica Maerz played Shelby Stewart a through ball that Stewart touched by a defender and finished with a couple minutes left in the first half. Maerz scored one of her own on an assist from Aubrey Durst for the 3-0 lead. Maerz assisted Stewart on the Vikings’ 4th and final goal, and Caylin Manary earned the shutout in goal.

Parkview is now 3-0 in the Ozark Conference and 7-0 overall, their best start ever.

Camdenton Lakers – 2
Waynesville Tigers – 0
Junior striker Ashleigh Paschel scored in the 6th and freshman Miriam Taylor scored in the final 10 minutes for the win. More at the Lake Sun Leader.

Thursday Ozarks Conference Soccer

Rolla Bulldogs score against KickapooKickapoo Chiefs – 0
Rolla Bulldogs – 1
The Bulldogs bounced back from their first ever loss to Parkview on Tuesday with the Conference win at Kickapoo this evening. An even affair that looked like it might go to PKs was decided in the 63rd minute when senior Olivia Cox created her own opportunity. An initial attack into the box by senior Kaylyn Stoll was cleared towards the fans where Olivia picked it up, looked for a pass and then split a pair of defender’s before running into the right side of the box. Her shot 12 yards from the endline on the right edge of the box had just enough to get over the keeper’s reach and settled into the far side netting.

After a first half that didn’t generate a significant opportunity, the Chiefs came out and put significant pressure on the Bulldogs in the second half, creating half a dozen corner kicks as well as several set pieces from outside the box. That continued after the Bulldogs scored as they concentrated on defending their lead and the Chiefs pressed to equalize. Between senior sweeper Taylor Banholzer and keeper Adrian Pogue, the Bulldogs were able to maintain a clean sheet, a necessity in a season that has seen them outscored 4-6 with a 3-2 record now. This is a team that gave up only 12 goals all last Spring so it was an important step and the players satisfaction with the result showed post-game. The Bulldogs and Chiefs both head for St Louis this weekend with Rolla facing Visitation Saturday while the Chiefs compete in the Parkway College Showcase.

Camdenton Lakers – 0
Glendale Falcons – 1
From the Lake Sun Leader: Camdenton’s girls soccer team suffered a bruising 1-0 loss to Glendale on Thursday night. Glendale out-shot the Lady Lakers 8-4 in a physical match that featured three significant injuries, two yellow cards, and foul counts in the double digits for both teams. UPDATE – the goal was scored by junior Alix Opfer, an outside midfielder this year with the return of sweeper Ashley McWilliams, assisted by Lindsey Sprouse.

Rhiannon Moore (Waynesville 2013) and Cassie Ferrell (Hillcrest 2011)Hillcrest Hornets – 0
Waynesville Tigers – 5
From the Waynesville Daily Guide: The Clark sisters combined for the first goal only four minutes in, as freshman Loriann Clark took sophomore Jesslyn’s pass and tucked the ball into the lower right corner. Eighteen minutes later sophomore Sarah Dowling put the finishing touch on a cross from former Hillcrest Hornet Alicia Otero for the second goal. Otero transferred to Waynesville from Hillcrest this season. Junior varsity keeper Cheyenne Forshey played in the field for varsity in this game got the Tigers on the board when she put freshman Jourdan Kilthau’s pass into the left side netting 10 minutes into the second half. Jesslyn Clark and Dowling finished off the scoring to put the Tigers up for the final margin of 5-0.

West Plains Zizzers – 1
Greenwood Blue Jays – 0
After opening their season with a win, the Zizzer’s got back on track tonight against the Blue Jays, shutting them out and getting their first home win. Both teams had numerous opportunities on free kicks and Greenwood had several corner kicks, but the game remained scoreless until the 31st minute of the 2nd half. Greenwood was whistled for a foul about 30 yards from goal on the left side. Ashley Martin sent a free kick to the far post. Several players converged on the ball, but Bre Wright got a foot on it and knocked it across the line for a 1-0 lead.

Or it could have been 8-0, I’ve gotten conflicting reports. The coach has not responded.

Carthage Tigers – 1
Hillcrest Hornets – 0
From the Carthage Press: The goal, setup by a blistering cross from Mandolin Smith, came in the 65th minute of regulation, breaking a scoreless tie. As it turned out, the goal — the first of the season by Carthage — was enough for the Lady Tigers to down Hillcrest at Fair Acres Sports Complex. Phylicia Lewis, who had four saves, registered her first shutout victory of the season after holding Hillcrest scoreless. Hillcrest, which was limited to only four shots on goal, was disrupted by Carthage’s trapping defense.

The junior varsity held on for a 3-1 victory over Hillcrest, the first win in program history.

Logan-Rogersville Wildcats – 1
Parkview Vikings – 4
Parkview junior Kelsey Loderhose scored two goals in the first half, leading the Lady Vikings to a 4-1 win at Logan-Rogersville Thursday. Loderhose scored both goals in the first half as the Vikings took a 3 goal lead, with Alexandra Shupert getting the other goal. Jessica Maerz scored in the second, from Shelby Stewart before Amanda Davis scored for Logan-Rogersville. Melanie Allen also had an assist for Parkview.

Glendale Opens With A Difficult Win At Kickapoo

Kickapoo Chiefs - Kicking Cancer!

Kickapoo Chiefs - Kicking Cancer!

Kickapoo Chiefs – 2
Glendale Falcons – 4
The Chiefs home opener this year (Branson was rained out) was a lively affair, enhanced by the Booster Club’s remarkable fund-raising effort (video) on behalf of Coach Stephanie Phillips and her family. A large crowd was on hand for both the JV and Varsity match and it looks like there will be close to $4500 raised via 300+ tshirts sold and other donations. The largest donation was $450, made by a group of 9 referees in the area that included the three working tonights game – Tim Noonan in the middle along with Jan Stahle and Bradley Hamman as Alternate’s. You can see photos of the players, coaches and ref’s on my Flickr site and Facebook.

The game offered the expected – the Falcon’s broke free for 4 goals on the evening, surprising the Chiefs with goals in the 8th (video), 39th and 47th minute as well as an own goal in the 59th minute when Molly Brewer’s hard ball square across the front of the goal bounced in off a defender, who was concentrating on Emily Cline who had already scored twice this evening. What was unexpected was how well Kickapoo moved the ball against the Glendale defense, especially since an already young Chief’s squad lost central midfielder Katie Lynn to strained ankle ligaments in the game against Lebanon Tuesday evening.

After the initial flurry that led to the opening goal, the Chief’s slowly but certainly moved the ball into the offensive end. With junior Jacinda Lemon’s in the net and a year of experience under her belt, she saved two potential goals when she tipped McKenna Adam’s hard shot over the crossbar in the 12th min and then stopped Adam’s breakaway opportunity in the 18th. By keeping her team in the game, when Cline was able to score in the 39th and 47th minutes, the Falcon’s had the cushion they needed and Lemon’s had positively impacted the game.

The Chief’s goals were scored by Kaylee Stephen’s when the junior alertly moved into the box following Lauryn Young’s speculative ball over the defense that ended up being knocked down, but not controlled, by Lemon’s. Stephen’s pounced on the ball and slipped it in from 6 yards out (video). The second goal was scored as the Chiefs moved forward in numbers and almost scored in similar fashion only to see a loose ball pushed out. Senior Hilary Carr was there to put a shot in from the right side to the far post.

Both teams introduced new players this evening but I’ve got to give sophomore Katie Etter a shout out for her play tonight, in particular when she came from nowhere it seemed and shouldered Emily Cline off the ball as she was making a dangerous run into the box in the 1st half. It represented the type of play the Chief’s newcomer’s offered as they came out and challenged the Falcon’s. Lot’s of time, and plenty of games to prepare for the one that matters. A very nice beginning to the season which was also enjoyed by Alf Bilbao from Drury, who was keeping an eye on Ashley McWilliams and Lindsey Sprouse, and Rob Podeyn from Southwest Baptist, watching Megan Melugin.

Alix Opfer scores the game-winner for Glendale

Scoring summary:
8th – Alix Opfer from Molly Brewer (0-1)
39th – Emily Cline from Lindsey Sprouse (0-2)
47th – Emily Cline from Molly Brewer (0-3)
54th – Kaylee Stephens, from Lauryn Young following McKenna Adam’s cross (1-3)
59th – own goal after Molly Brewers square ball into the box (1-4)
71st – Hilary Carr from 25 yards out to far post (2-4)

Glendale Lady Falcons Open with ACL Prevention (PEP Program)

Glendale Lady Falcons with Dr Rusty Bond, Cox Health

Glendale Lady Falcons with Dr Rusty Bond, Cox Health

Second day of Spring practice and the weather is not cooperating. Still plenty of smiles to be found as the Lady Falcon’s spent their practice taking the long view as Dr Rusty Bond was on hand with his team to provide instruction the in the PEP ACL Preventation program, designed to help female athletes avoid ACL injuries. I’ll have more information next week on this free program offered by Cox.

The Glendale Falcons finished 4th last year in their first ever visit to the State Final 4, losing to Pattonville in the consolation game. The team lost two seniors, Emily Jordan and Jeni Frewin, but return seven senior starters and three of the most talented underclassmen in the region in Emily Cline, Molly Brewer and Alix Opfer – who took over for 2008 Regional Defensive Player of the Year Ashley McWilliams – when McWilliams went down with an ACL injury. Add in a pair of sophomore goalkeepers in Sarah Helm and Jacinda Lemons and it’s an experienced squad. A squad that like their small school counterparts across Highway 65 at Catholic, expects to return to the Final 4 in 2010. Ryan Collins does a good job of exploring those details in his article On The Road To State for the Glendale Quill on Monday

Twelve seniors and eight juniors return this year with one goal in mind: make it to State and play in the championship game.

The Lady Falcons return with a promising amount of talent. They lost only two seniors, Emily Jordan and Jeni Frewin, last year, Also, their top scorers, Lindsey Sprouse and Molly Brewer, return this season. Along with making it to State, the team has some other goals.

“I really want to beat Kickapoo and Catholic,” said senior Katie Brewer.

Ryan also added an article that explores the dynamics of the Brewer sisters who run the midfield for the Falcons. Check it out, great story on a very talented pair of sisters who are, well, sisters!
