The Marshfield Blue Jays sent a message to Class 2 District 11 with their win at Willard today. The weekend featured three wins, all by a single goal, as they exhibited the defensive fortitude necessary to win titles as well as having the ability to score goals when needed. That includes a 2-1 comeback win over nemesis Bolivar in the morning semifinal match.

The Jays game winner came in the 19th minute when junior Danielle Coffman (pictured) ran on to Alex Cantrell’s square ball from the left side. Coffman ran unmarked into the box and confidently slid her shot to the far side, freezing Willard’s keeper.

OZARK CONFERENCE
The Bulldogs sit atop the Conference with an unblemished record (6-0). Still remaining after tonights game are Camdenton on May 2nd and Glendale on May 3rd. Can they hold on?

Lebanon vs Camdenton is also a District 10 game. Camdenton dreams of District glory this year, and therefor must get past Lebanon if they hope to finally beat Rolla. As the Lake News noted last week – This year’s CHS senior class is winless all-time against Rolla, which has ended the Lady Lakers’ postseason run in districts each of the past two seasons.

Miriam Melugin (KHS 2014) & Emma Chilton (PHS 2014)

Miriam Melugin (KHS 2014) & Emma Chilton (PHS 2014)

Parkview Vikings – 1 (2nd OT)
Kickapoo Chiefs – 0
Kelsey Loderhose buried a free kick from 30 yards (video) for the game winner in the 95th minute Thursday night. The game was scoreless through regulation and while the Chief’s had the better opportunities, including a ball off the underside of the crossbar and a breakaway by Katie Lynn that was cleared inside the six yard box by Holly Messick, they were unable to get the decisive goal.

The Vikings matched the Chiefs intensity tonight, aided and abetted by a recent change that has moved freshman Emma Chilton into the middle. Emma offers the Vikings more bite in the middle, a necessary ingredient in the Ozark Conference. The Vikings backline, led by McKenzie Payton, once again features Anna Withers, Messick and Amy Green and this experienced group will be key come Districts where a single goal can determine the outcome.

The Chiefs, who welcomed the return of McKenna Adams and Kate Bess from injuries, will look at how a foul 30 yards out impacted the outcome. Much like the Glendale match a month ago. Strong games against Ozark and Camdenton next week will be important to earning a #2 seed in preparation for Districts. Oh, and that rematch with the Falcon’s on May 11th.

COC Soccer

The game with the most on the line tonight is a Class 2 match between District 11 foes Marshfield and Logan-Rogersville. In addition to being a Webster County derby, these two teams are part of a new five team line-up that opens one of them to becoming a District champion for the first time ever. The Blue Jays are the early pick after their first ever win over Bolivar earlier this season.

Logan-Rogersville Wildcats – 0
Marshfield Blue Jays – 1
Alex Cantrell scores the lone goal on a corner kick from Danielle Coffman in the first half. The Lady Jays then hold off a huge surge from Rog in the second half.

Nixa Eagles – 10
Branson Pirates – 0
Goals were scored by Payton DeHart, assisted by Kelsey Bartell; Bailey Pesek, assisted by Shelby Zielke; Brittany Kirkpatrick, assisted by DeHart; DeHart, assisted by Rachel Murphy and Pesek, assisted Halie Owen
in the first half. The second half saw goals scored by DeHart, assisted by Bartell; Bartell, assisted by Courtney Frerichs and Paige Townsend; Jordyn Hoskins, assisted by Kelsey Haist; Pesek unassisted and Jenny Hoffmann assist by Owen.

Shutout is shared by Kristin Miller and Lexi Stagner. Nixa is now 8-1. The Nixa JV won 6-0

Springfield Catholic – 8
Bolivar Liberators – 2
Freshman Nicole Ortega scored a brace (that’s two in British speak), one assisted by Emily Ortega. A brace by Shelby Hatz, one by Jordan Banasik and 3 by Natalie Smid. Bolivar goals by Jonna Welch and Mariah Roberts on a great header from an Izzy Mersch corner kick.

After taking an early lead, on Tori Eads goal in the 6th minute, the Wildcats saw the Tigers grab a 73rd minute equalizer. The game-winner was scored by senior Madolin Smith, headed for NEO A&M soccer in Miama, OK in the Fall, when she found space in the box following a counter-attack.

Monday – Kickapoo Wins!

Kickapoo Chiefs and Nixa Eagles, April 2011Big game tonight as the Nixa Eagles, after a weekend off, will visit the Kickapoo Chiefs who went 1-1 at the Parkway College Showcase this weekend. The Eagle’s are looking to extend their unbeaten string and more importantly, send another message to District 11 about their plans for this season. After getting their first ever win over Kickapoo last year, this has the making of a new derby. Varsity will start approximately 6:30 pm. I’ll be there!

Kickapoo Chiefs – 3
Nixa Eagles – 2
Junior Megan Manes stamped her name on this rivalry tonight with a pair of goals that led the Chiefs to victory. Both goals were opportunistic, with Mane’s showing good anticipation and composure by burying her shots from just outside the six yard box. The first came in the 36th minute, soon after the game was restarted following injury time as Nixa freshman Taylor Stamper was escorted from the field following her collision with her keeper on a play in the box. The Chief’s took the goal kick that followed and went right back into the Eagle’s box and when GK Kristin Miller punched out a dangerous cross, Mane’s was on the far side where she put the ball back into the unguarded net. Her game-winner followed a similar recipe, this time in the 68th minute and was a deserved reward for her teammates efforts leading up to the goal.

The Eagles scored first this evening, after weathering an early flurry from Kickapoo. Senior Kelsey Haist buried a PK in the 9th minute after Rachel Murphey was taken down in the box. Nixa responded well to the goal, as might be expected, and went after a second but were unable to break down Kickapoo’s defenses, while the Chief’s were also ruing missed opportunities.

A conversation with senior Katy Lynn post-game pointed to the confidence boost that Mane’s first goal offered the Chief’s, coming directly after the injury break offered the team an opportunity to reinforce that the game was theirs to win. Lynn also pointed to Hodge’s inspirational speech at halftime, something she noted the girls have been waiting all season for. He pointed to the teams performance at the Parkway College Showcase and reinforced the opportunity that awaited them.

The Chief’s got their 3rd goal less than a minute after Mane’s game-winner when McKenna Adam’s buried a shot from 25 yards. Freshman Miriam Melugin also came close in the closing minutes when she banged a shot off the crossbar.

Nixa’s second goal was scored in the 73rd minute following a throw-in from near the Chief’s bench and when the ball took a big bounce, goalkeeper Danzer had to come out fast and block an initial shot as an Eagle snuck in-between the Chief’s defenders. Moats tracked down the loose ball and buried it before the defense could react. It was insufficient however as the Eagle’s were a shadow of themselves in the second half of this game. A lack of movement off the ball was the biggest failure in my opinion. The Eagle’s now have their first lesson in what it means to be the favorite. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.

Greenwood Blue Jays – 4
Joplin McCauley – 1
The Blue Jays got goals from Sara Cook (2 – welcome back Sara) and Mary-Margaret Kirkman (2). The Warriors goal was scored by Sammi Graham

This is a District game although with only three teams in the District, Catholic being the other one, this is more about learning what will be needed in late May when the playoffs role around.

Bolivar Liberators – 5
Republic Tigers – 1
Bolivar got goals from Abby Martin, assisted by Sarah Magana; Jonna Welch, assisted by Izzy Mersch and Sarah Magana, assisted by Morgan Wohnoutka, to open a 3-0 halftime lead. Magana and Welch each scored second half goals as well, both assisted by Izzy Mersch, before the Tiger’s Sara Marcotte got the Tiger’s on the board unassisted in the 69th minute.

Rolla Bulldogs – 6
West Plains Zizzers – 1
Rolla had six different people score. Rolla is now 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Ozark Conference.

The Bulldogs, always known for their defense, have found offense this season as well. Much of it appears to be going through Nicole Howard, the coaches daughter who I’m hearing excellent reports on. The Bulldogs barely lost to Visitation 2-3 this weekend. Viz is the #1 ranked team in Class 2 and knocked off #1 Large School St Joe’s on Thursday.

COC Soccer – Nixa Shocks Catholic

Kelsey Haist's goal falls under cross bar

Kelsey Haist's goal falls under cross bar

No true Conference games as it’s small-schools versus large schools today BUT you can see Class 1 State Champions Springfield Catholic go up against #1 ranked Large School Nixa tonight.

Nixa Eagles - 2
Springfield Catholic – 1
Senior Kelsey Haist gave Nixa only their second win ever over Catholic when she buried her shot from the top of the box into the upper 90 in the 77th minute. Sr Kelsey Bartell won a ball at the top of the box, with the ball falling to junior Lauren Moats, who dribbled into the left side of the box, pulling defenders with her. Her simple ball back to the penalty circle found Haist who one-timed her shot, which was just beyond the reach of the Catholic keeper (see photo).

It was an epic battle, the type of competition that shows the levels that can be reached by players who love the game and competing, regardless of gender. Add in the fact that these two teams are very familiar with each other, stocked with Club players on each side, and it was easy to see that bragging rights were on the line as well. The Class 3 Coaches in the region, and I, identified the Eagles as the early season favorites in Class 3 and tonight they delivered on that promise. For the Fightin’ Irish, losing at any time in the season is something to take personally.

The keeper’s established the tone early. Nixa’s Kristin Miller throwing herself at the feet of Shelby Hatz on the breakaway, Goetzinger charging out beyond the box to clear a Nixa effort. Catholic broke through first, with Bekah Bade running through an attempted clearance, breaking in alone and calmly slotting her shot to the far post 13 minutes in. It was a frenetic pace, exemplified by freshman Nicole Ortega later shaking off not one but two hard tackles to get down the line before crossing the ball into the box. Somehow Nixa held on as Catholic were unable to convert any of their set pieces tonight, a critical element in the Eagle’s win.

The Eagle’s showed a confident approach to the game that only comes from experience. They played their game, run by Haist and Moats, that concentrates on simple passes, working the triangle and getting numbers into the box. The fact that they were able to bring not 11, but 17 players to that effort, led to fresher legs at the end. The tying goal was scored in the 37th minute, moved down the left side before Courtney Frerichs found Rachel Murphy near the penalty circle. Her shot bounced off a defender and into the net as the keeper was unable to recover from her initial dive. Haist got her game winner in the final 3 minutes of the second half. Coincidence? I think not.

Catholic will look back at this game and justifiably feel they could have won, with more and better opportunities in the box. Nixa was opportunistic and the game-winner came as they were imposing themselves on the Irish defense over the final 20 minutes. A simple adjustment, which reduced the breakaway opportunities Catholic was able to create in the first half, helped give Nixa the confidence to attack Catholic and get a win that will help them in late May when it matters most.

Southwest Baptist Bearcats Sign Braun, Cantrell, White, Gelsheimer and Copeland

Bolivar, Mo. – SBU Head Women’s Soccer Coach has announced the signing of nine players to National Letters of Intent. “We are very excited about the addition of these young ladies and what they bring to our program. We felt we were close to being one of the top teams in our conference, but we were just missing in a few areas. I think this class has helped us close the gap and get us ready for a tough conference run in 2011,” said Coach Podeyn.

SBU announced the signing of 5’8” defender Jayme Braun from Ozark, Missouri. “Jayme is a strong and physical left-footed defender with good size and speed. We need more strength and depth as last year showed us, and Jayme gives us an excellent defender to help strengthen our defense moving forward.” Jayme has earned All-District, All-Conference and All-Region Honors each of the last two years representing Ozark High School in Ozark, Missouri. “I chose SBU because it was close to home, has a small Christian Environment, has one of the best Physical Therapy Programs in the country, and a very good soccer program,” said Jayme. Jayme will enter SBU in August as a freshman in the Physical Therapy Program.

SBU announced the signing of 5’2” central midfielder Alex Cantrell from Marshfield, Missouri. “Alex is a tremendous midfielder with great vision. She understands our system and how we play and is the perfect fit for the triangle midfield. She has great awareness on the field and is very creative in attacking play.” Alex earned All-District and All-Conference Honors each of the last two years representing Marshfield High School in Marshfield, Missouri. “I chose SBU because of its small campus and it being close to home. The SBU soccer program was a perfect fit for me and was exactly what I was looking for,” said Alex. Alex will enter SBU in August as a freshman.

SBU announced the signing of 5’6” forward Amanda White from St. James, Missouri. “Amanda is one of those players because of where she plays did not receive a lot of attention. She is a very quick attacking player who has scored almost 80 goals for her high school in three years. She has the capability and desire to score with a tremendous work rate that gives defenders fits. She will fit in well with our attacking scheme.” Amanda has been voted Offensive Player of the Year for her team since her freshman year, she is a 3-Time All-District and All-Conference Player and last year was selected as an All-Region and 2nd Team All-State Performer for St. James High School in St. James, Missouri. “I chose SBU because it has one of the best Physical Therapy Programs and I was impressed with the soccer program there. It was exactly what I was looking for,” said Amanda. Amanda will enter SBU in August and plans on majoring in Physical Therapy.

Marin Gelsheimer, Kickapoo (2011)SBU announced the signing of 5’5” attacking central midfielder Marin Gelsheimer from Springfield, Missouri. “Marin is a special player that sees things before they happen. She is very intuitive on the field and reads the game at a different level. She is technically strong with both feet and dangerous anywhere from 30 yards out. She has tremendous speed and is strong and aggressive on the ball.” Marin is the centerpiece of the Kickapoo High School midfield and has been for the last three years. She has earned All-District, All-Conference, All-Ozark, and All-Region Honors and was last year selected as her team’s Most Valuable Player. “I chose SBU for various reasons. Most importantly I want to attend a college with a Christ-centered education filled with people who love Christ just as I do. Another reason is because of the smaller class sizes. I work better one-on-one with that personal attention in a classroom environment. I also admire the fact that I will be able to have a more personal relationship with my professors. I believe that all of these aspects is what is going to be the key to success for my college experience and SBU provides all of these things,” said Marin. Marin will enter SBU in August as a freshman.

SBU announced the signing of 5’8” forward/defender Brittany Copeland from Neosho, Missouri. “Brittany was one of those players we identified at our Prospects Camp last August. She was strong, physical and tough to shake off of the ball. She has a tremendous shot and does not give up on the play. She was a solid player we envisioned could play up front or even in the back. She is a smart and talented player who can adjust and adapt well to any situation.” Brittany plays for Neosho High School and as earned All-District and All-Conference Honors each of the last two years. “After attending soccer camp and visiting the campus I realized SBU would be a perfect fit for me. I like the smaller campus and Christian values of SBU. I believe playing soccer under Coach Podeyn will improve my skills and help me become a better athlete. I am interested in physical therapy as a major and I believe SBU has the best program in the area,” said Brittany. Brittany will enter SBU in August as a freshman.

SBU announced the signing of 5’0” wing midfielder and attacker Heather Seger from Jacob, Illinois. “Heather is a very creative and dynamic player who possesses speed like I’ve never seen before. I remember the first time I saw her in a game she was just a blur. I had to wait for her to stop to see her number and who she was. She is an amazing attacking player who is absolutely relentless in her pursuit of the ball. She doesn’t understand how to stop and never gives up on any play. She is strong enough as a player to play in midfield, but dynamic and fast that she makes a perfect wing attacker as well. She is an exciting addition for us.” Heather plays for a Triad High School team that won Regionals and Sectionals last year and has been Missouri Valley Conference Champions the last three years. Last year, Heather received Offensive Player of the Year Honors from the Missouri Valley Conference. “I chose SBU because of its Computer Science and Education Programs, its small size, and its soccer program, said Heather. Heather will enter SBU in August as a freshman and plans on majoring in Education and Computer Science.

SBU announced the signing of 5’3” forward Caitlin Suerig from Pacific, Missouri. “Caitlin is a very crafty and creative attacking player who is quick and confident when breaking down defenders 1v.1. I felt like we needed to get more dangerous up front and Caitlin is a player that gives us a dangerous 1v.1 threat with a definite goal scoring touch.” Caitlin has been selected as an All-Conference Performer each of the last two years and was selected as the Conference Offensive MVP last year. “I chose SBU because I want to attend school where others share my beliefs and I can play for a competitive soccer program.” Caitlin will enter in August as a freshman.

SBU announced the signing of 5’4” midfielder Shalyn Wheeler from Harrisonville, Missouri. “Shalyn is fun to watch. She has a tremendous work rate and never gives up on the ball. She is quick and aggressive and is deceptively physical in her play. She is the kind of player you like having on your team because you’d hate to play against her. She never stops. She is also a great TEAM player as she is always positive and upbeat and loves to play” Shalyn plays club soccer in Kansas City and also plays at Harrisonville High School. Last year she earned 2nd Team All-Conference and 2nd Team All-District Honors. “Southwest Baptist University was the first college visit I ever went on and from that day on no other school compared to SBU. I visited multiple schools trying to find the “perfect school,” yet I always came back to SBU. SBU offered everything I wanted: a small school, a soccer team, a private religious school, close to home and many others.” Shalyn will enter as a freshman in August.

SBU announced the signing of Lucinda Menne, a 5’8” central defender from St. Charles Community College in St. Louis, Missouri. “I knew when I met Lucinda that she was the player I wanted. She has very good speed, but is very strong at controlling and captaining everything from the back. She is physical and aggressive, but plays very smart and does not take risks. She dominates in the air defensively and is very positive and supportive with her defensive partners.” A four-year starter in high school, Lucinda began her college education and playing career helping to start the St. Charles Community College Women’s Soccer Program. Last season, Lucinda helped them to a 14-5-1 record and a District Championship. They just missed a chance at qualifying for the NJCAA National Tournament losing to eventual qualifier Lewis and Clark 1-0 in overtime. “I chose SBU because I really wanted to go to a school with a Christian atmosphere. I am a hard worker and very passionate about playing and am looking forward to playing at SBU.” Lucinda will enter SBU in August after earning her Associates Degree from St. Charles Community College. She will begin as a junior.

Class 2 District 5 – Harrisonville To Final, 2nd Game Moved

Jennifer McArthur (MHS 2011) and Anisa Alexander (HHS 2013) battle

Jennifer McArthur (MHS 2011) and Anisa Alexander (HHS 2013) battle

#1 Harrisonville Wildcats – 2
#5 Marshfield Blue Jays – 0
Alex Erickson and Nikki Woodfin. Shutout by Sara Clarke.

I caught the second half, after the score was already 2-0. What I saw was two teams who ignored the conditions (the field was already muddy with areas of standing water) and played strong games indicative of the importance of the game. Harrisonville looks to have several weapons and a strong defense that were able to throw up a wall around their goal. Warrensburg or Bolivar will have a significant challenge to move past the Wildcats on Saturday.

The Marshfield players were a joy to watch. While losing Alex Cantrell limited how far the Blue Jays might have advanced, her 2011 class will offer the Jay’s another strong core to build on, with forwards Kylea Ryser and Jennifer McArthur reliable scoring options, Shelbie Porter and Morgan Blackstock back to lead the defense. Add current sophomores Danielle Coffman and Gabriayle Lowe and Coach Lewis has the tools to return next year.

Goalkeeper will be the most critical position to replace as Morgan Horman turned in her finest games of the season when it mattered most this week, roaming widely in her box to limit the Wildcat’s opportunities and beating West Plains. The tandem of Allison Martin on defense with Ashley Burgner (hurt this week) with Ashley Honeycutt in the midfield worked well together and Honeycutt is my pick for most valuable Jay this season in the four games I saw. I understand she may be headed for Northeast Oklahoma A&M to play in college (Miami, OK) which is good news.

The game between the #2 Bolivar Liberators and #3 Warrensburg Tigers has been moved to tomorrow evening at 6:00 pm due to unplayable conditions following 30 minutes of heavy rain. The final will be played Saturday at a time to be determined.

As Coach Jeff Edge notes in the Bolivar Herald-Free Press: “We beat Warrensburg 3-1 earlier in the year at Warrensburg, but the Lady Tigers had several starters out due to injury and illness. This will be a much different club than we faced earlier in the season. They also have a sour taste in their mouth after losing the district final to us 3-0 last year.”
