Southwest Missouri Sectional Soccer Results

State Sectional games tonight with the winners advancing to the Quarterfinals on Saturday at a location to be determined, game times will likely be 12pm or 1pm. Wonder what the rain/temps will be like then?

I’ll be in Carthage tonight while I hope to get live scores from Cassville and Springfield where the Class 2 and Class 1 games are being hosted. Anyone from Rolla going to be tweeting? Or feel free to send me game reports via text at 417-597-4314. I provide live reports via Twitter, if you have an account follow me. If you are providing scores, let me know so I can follow you!

    CLASS 3

Glendale Falcons (16-9-1) – 0
Carthage Tigers (24-4) – 3
The Tiger’s got on the scoreboard in the 10th minute tonight when Cesar Aguirre’s ball into the box drifted over the outstretched arms of the Falcon’s keeper and settled into the far side netting. It came as Carthage’s pressure offense kept Glendale on the defensive and ended up setting the tone for the game.

I noted after Carthage’s 0-5 loss to Catholic in late September that the Tiger’s would need to learn how playoff soccer. Head Coach Jacob Osborne noted following tonight’s game, it was a message the boys learned as well on the pitch that evening. They began working on the necessary steps the next day, first asking the players what they felt needed to be worked on. The ideas flowed and the buy-in followed. Three key changes included moving Joe Curti into a withdrawn forward position and moving Mark Navarette into the midfield, ensuring that the best two players were getting as many touches as possible. With junior Manny Marquez moving from the midfield into a central defender role, the transformation was complete.

The Falcon’s came out hard in the second half and attempted to get past Carthage as the Tiger’s went into a defensive shell. The response by Carthage was instinctive, as the pressure of the game settled on their minds but as they held off Glendale’s efforts, the Tiger’s slowly began to play their game again and were soon rewarded. As Mark Navarette notes in his interview (below), it was nice play on the left side that led to Navarette’s long cross into the box that Henry Luna headed back into the goal just before it went over the end line just beyond the far post.

A beautiful goal, created by a team that was moving forward and back as a unit, never allowing the Falcon’s danger boys, Hart and Martinez, the space they needed to create. A few opportunities were created outside the box, including 3 set pieces due to fouls, but nothing that goalkeeper Ludin Gonzalez was unable to handle when a shot did get past the defense.

The final goal came when Gonzalez sent a booming kick downfield that reached the Falcon’s box, pulling the keeper out before sophomore forward Ismael Serratos picked up the ball and slid his shot into an unoccupied net for the final margin.

Rock Bridge Bruins (24-5) - 3
Rolla Bulldogs (16-10-2) - 2
Senior Ryan Taylor scored first for the Bruins (23-5). A goal from junior Matt Kelly put Rock Bridge ahead 2-1 and a goal from junior Ryan Schmidt made it 3-1. Rolla scored the game’s final goal.

The Quarterfinal between Rock Bridge and Carthage will be played in Columbia, at Rock Bridge, on Saturday November 13th at noon we believe, although the MSHSAA site notes 12 am.

    CLASS 2

Bolivar Liberators (19-7) – 1
Cassville Wildcats (11-14) – 0
Matt Magana unassisted in the 73rd

Marshall Owls (23-2) – 4
Warrensburg Tigers (17-9-1) – 3
Josh Posegate (WPHS Class of 2000) in his third season as the Owl’s Head Boys Soccer Coach, will be looking to get Marshall back to the Final Four for the first time since 2003. A victory against the Liberators on Saturday would send the Owls to the Final Four in St. Louis on November 19th and 20th. For the Liberators it would be a return trip after finishing 2nd last year, their highest finish ever.

Marshall hosts Bolivar Saturday

    CLASS 1

Crocker Lions (21-3) – 0
Springfield Catholic (19-6) – 4
Catholic got a pair of goals in each half tonight. Sr Adam Entrup opened the scoring 18 minutes in followed by Niko Temofeew in the 34th. Mitchell Moncada and Ryan Randell scored in the second half.

Southern Boone County (19-5) – 0
Sacred Heart (16-11) – 1

Looks like Sacred Heart will host the Quarterfinal between Catholic and Sacred Heart on Saturday

Class 3 District Finals – Glendale Will Face Carthage Tuesday

District 11 Final
#1 Kickapoo Chiefs – 0
#2 Glendale Falcons – 1 (2nd OT)
The game was won in the 98th minute when Roman Aldaiz buried a penalty kick, following the call against Jake Nedoma of the Kickapoo Chiefs who fouled Alec Martinez in the box.

Here’s the video from KSPR Sports

The Chief’s best opportunity was early as the the Falcon’s were adjusting to a new lineup and a likely hangover after Wednesday’s marathon match. Very early Devan Selsor beat his defender to an excellent thru ball but his shot from the far right was pushed wide by Reece Conner and cleared by the defense. It was midway through the 1st half when Glendale’s attack began to get into gear. The key difference throughout the game was the Falcon’s ability to get into the box and create opportunities while the Chief’s were relying on shots from outside the box or set pieces after Selsor’s early effort. They had two great opportunities that required acrobatic saves by Reece Conner, one in each half (see one in the video), but as the game wore on the strategy began to look less and less likely to succeed. Tyler Moses was called on to make several important saves (see the KSPR video above) to keep the game scoreless and both teams had players step up in key situations, including Nedoma who cleared a ball of the line following a Glendale corner kick. In the end, a quality play by Alec Martinez with his run and ability to beat defenders 1v1 created the opportunity the Falcon’s needed and they capitalized.

The Sectional game between Glendale and Carthage will be played at Carthage on Tuesday, probable start time is 6:00 pm. I’ve been saying Springfield, for that I apologize, too many groups to keep track of. The key – Even numbered districts host in even numbered years.

Carthage district champs, 2010

District 12 Final, 6:00 pm:
#1 Carthage Tigers – 2
#2 Joplin Eagles – 0
The game winner was scored in the 57th minute by Joe Curti with the insurance goal in the 76th by Ismael Serratos. Well played by both sides. Carthage played their style and controlled the ball and work towards the goal from the offensive end. Joplin played the ball long and tried to score off of a counter attack.

Class 3 District Playoffs – Chiefs, Falcons, Tigers, Eagles, Bulldogs, Bruins!

#1 Kickapoo Chiefs – 4
#4 Ozark Tigers – 1
The Tigers broke through first, when sr Michael Headlee scored through a crowd on the corner kick. The Chief’s got the game-tying goal from Aaron Strunk when Hunter Durham’s run into the box was broken up Strunk was there to bury the loose ball in the 33rd. The game-winner was scored in the final minute of the 1st half when Durham was hip-checked off the ball, going to the ground inside the box. Senior Nate Lavoy, as he has all season, calmly buried the resulting PK despite having to take it twice as the first one was waved off by encroachment by a teammate prior to his first kick.

The final goal was scored by… The Tigers came close on several occasions but as they have all season, the Chief’s defense is resilient and Tyler Moses is rounding into post-season form, with diving saves like this.

#2 Glendale Falcons – 5 (PKs)
#3 Nixa Eagles - 4
The Nixa Eagles discovered some mojo tonight and his name is Robert Neathery. Scoring three goals for the Eagles, before going out late in the match with an injury, it appeared the boys team were destined to repeat the heights reached by the girls program in the Spring. It was not to be however as the Falcon’s clawed their way back into the game, finally equalizing in the 77th minute on sophomore Evan Garrad’s 30 yard blast that found the upper 90 (see below).

Alec Martinez moved into 3rd on the Glendale single season scoring list with his two goals. He now has 23, passing Josh Keisker who is now assistant coach.

Kickapoo will now face Glendale for the District title on Friday evening at 7:00 pm. The District champion will face the District 12 champion (Carthage or Joplin) in the Sectional game Tuesday November 9th.

District 12 is hosted by Joplin, the semifinals are at 4:30 and 6:30 pm:

#1 Carthage Tigers – 2
#4 Central Bulldogs – 0
From the Joplin Globe: Carthage quickly grabbed the lead on Ismael Serratos’ goal in the sixth minute, and Joe Curti scored at 23 minutes for a 2-0 advantage.

#2 Joplin Eagles – 2
#3 Willard Tigers – 1
From the Joplin Globe: Parker Maher scored on a penalty kick and assisted on another goal, and Joplin goalkeeper Blake Ward stopped a penalty kick as the Eagles held off Willard 2-1 Wednesday night in a Class 3 District 12 soccer semifinal game Wednesday night at Junge Field. Josh Lingurar scored for Willard.

The second-seeded Eagles (15-8) battle top-seeded Carthage (22-4) in the championship game at 6 p.m. Friday

District 9 Final at Columbia:
#1 Rock Bridge Bruins – 1 (PKs)
#3 Jeff City Jays – 0
Rock Bridge scored all six of their allotted penalty kicks on shots by Jon Gunter, Matt Kelly, Trevor Davis, Ryan Taylor, Danny Baird and Ryan Stanowski. Then, Bruins goalkeeper Brady Wulff made a save on Jefferson City’s sixth penalty kick to win the game. Before the shootout, the Bruins made eight shots on goal, sending one into the net in the 13th minute that was called back on a foul. The Bruins are now 21-5 on the season.

District 10 Final at West Plains:
#1 Rolla Bulldogs – 2 (2nd OT)
#2 Camdenton Lakers – 1
Sr Jason Howard scored in the 98th minute to break the deadlock and send the Bulldogs on to the Sectional Playoff. Rolla struck first but Camdenton senior striker Jeron Sinclair had an answer with a goal just before the halftime break in West Plains. The Lakers end the season 16-9 with a third place finish in the Ozark Conference.

It is the 12th district championship in the history of the RHS boys’ soccer program and the 17th time in the past 18 years the Bulldogs have played in the district title game.

The Bulldogs, now 16-9-2, will host Columbia Rock Bridge at 6 p.m. Tuesday on Kiwanis Field at the Bray Sports Complex in Class 3 Sectional action. The Sectional winner faces the D11/D12 Sectional winner in the Quarterfinals on November 13th.

Ozark Conference – Kickapoo Are Undefeated Champions

Devan Selsor, Kickapoo Chiefs (2012)

Devan Selsor, Kickapoo Chiefs (2012)

Glendale Falcons – 1
Kickapoo Chiefs – 2
The Chief’s came out fast tonight and taking advantage of the strong wind, Turner Adams sent a free kick into the box in the fifth minute that while initially parried, fell to Josh McCutcheon who was then taken down before he could shoot. Senior Nate Lavoy buried the resulting penalty kick for the early lead.

PHOTO GALLERY

Glendale finally broke through midway through the second half soon after sophomore Evan Garrad was moved up into the midfield from his outside back position. Garrad won a ball, pushed it left and Roman Aldaiz then slotted a ball to jr Austin Hart, who had his back to the goal and was just inside the penalty area. Hart was able to collect the ball and make a quick turn to his left towards the center of the box before getting off a quick shot that stayed low and settled into the far side netting to knot the score.

The game-winner was scored by Devan Selsor as the Chief’s mounted one of their patented counter-attacks. The more active side all evening, a ball won deep in their end was quickly sent forward and Selsor’s hard work got him into the attack down the left side. He was rewarded for his effort and as he carried the ball into the left side of the box, he unleashed a shot the found the far side netting, sending the Chief’s fan’s into hysteria (below).

The Chief’s finish 9-0 in the Ozark Conference and reclaim the Ozark Conference title, which the Camdenton Laker’s snatched last year while ending the Chief’s four year streak. The Chief’s play this evening erased any doubts about whether they deserved the #1 seed in the upcoming District 11 playoffs. Unless Glendale can find some energy and attitude worthy of the derby, it’s likely to be Kickapoo vs Carthage in the Sectional game on November 9th. That makes tomorrow’s game against the visiting Tiger’s even more interesting now. Come out and support the Kicking for A Cure double-header tomorrow at Kickapoo that includes a game between Republic and Webb City. Arrive early for the best seats!

On the strength of three straight shutouts from goalie Mason Young, the Eagles held off the Chiefs to capture the Brown Division trophy this evening. The Eagles goal was scored by Robert Neathery as his shot from outside the box slipped just inside the upright in the 30th minute. The Chiefs moved defender Dylan Corbett into the attack midway through the second half, leaving three defenders back, and had several shots that were kept out due to the acrobatics and reactions of goalkeeper Young. The pressure continued to the final seconds and the relief was evident on the coaches faces as the players celebrated their breakthrough win, their first ever over Kickapoo!

Following a decade of participation in the Shootout, this weekend was the first time the Eagles have won their 1st game of the tourney, a 2-0 shutout of KC-based Blue Springs, moving them into the winner’s bracket for Saturday. Both goals were scored by senior KhaiUyen Huynh. A late morning 1-0 win over St Louis-based Pattonville, goal by Drake Hughes with an assist from KhaiUyen Huynh, moved the Eagles into the title match and an opportunity to test themselves against their most significant challenge of the season, against the Chief’s who are the favorite in the chase for the District 11 title. Matching the girls team this year must be a significant incentive for the Eagles.

Neathery’s goal was only a small part of his story today. The Eagle’s were without central midfielder Drake Trease for both of today’s matches as well as losing forward Jameson McFadden for the season due to a broken arm. The sophomore stepped into the central position, parnering with Corey Cann, and ensured that Nixa didn’t falter. KhaiUyen Huynh has also stepped up his game, as represented by his role in the Eagle’s offense this weekend but more importantly his work rate and ability to create in the offensive end, opening opportunities for the team. Drake Hughes and Adrian Yang-Jacobi, both given more responsibility and playing time this weekend, stepped up as well.

It was a lively and enjoyable match as either team could have won. November is looking more and more interesting.

Alec Martinez (Glendale 2011) in front of Reid Harbach (Catholic 2012)

Alec Martinez (Glendale 2011) in front of Reid Harbach (Catholic 2012)

The new HS Sports columnist Matt Schoch has done a decent job of reaching out via Twitter so I’m going to try a new policy here and point to some stories from the News-Leader, something I quit doing a few years ago. We’ll see how it works out…

Glendale finds inspiration in team’s successful history

As Glendale opens the season with just two starters back, emphasizing that history could be as important as ever. With would-be starters Jake Rogers and Kyle Hawkins sidelined by injuries, Martinez and junior midfielder Austin Hart will lead an otherwise inexperienced group. But Jeff Rogers is hopeful that Glendale can compensate with effort and intensity for what it may lack in skill and experience.

“Technically, you know, we might not be one of the strongest teams we’ve ever put out,” Rogers said. “But as far as work ethic and attitude, they’re right up there with the top two or three teams. So that’s going to win us some games right there — just our work rate and attitude.”

Sophomores Evan Garrad and Matt Call will anchor Glendale’s defense, in front of senior goalkeeper Reece Conner, who has bided his time the past three years behind graduated starter Jordan Pitts. Seniors like Roman Aldiaz, Spencer Gahagan and Kurt Waterman will complement Martinez and Hart in the attack.

Joe Aubuchon, a transfer from Columbia Hickman, and Lukas Rickenbocker, a foreign exchange student from Switzerland, should contribute, too. But precisely how all the puzzle pieces will fit together remains something of a mystery.

Ole’s Notes – From what I’ve seen at two practices, Aubuchon and Rickenbocker have the wherewithal to handle the central midfield which will give Coach Roger’s the ability to move Martinez into the attack. I hadn’t heard about Hawkin’s injury and that will be significant given his anticipated role as the central defender. There are some talented underclassman so I anticipate that even with some early hiccups the Falcon’s will be a team to watch at the end. As usual.

Thursday Ozarks Regional Soccer Report

Glendale Falcons Outscore Kickapoo ChiefsGlendale Falcons – 4
Kickapoo Chiefs – 1
The Falcon’s set a high bar in the traditional derby this evening, winning easily by comparison to the history of this series. The game-winner was scored in the 6th minute (I subscribe to the goal that establishes a lead that is not relinquished when measuring game-winners) when Brandon Baum buried his 28 yard direct kick into the upper 90 over the outstretched hands of Kickapoo keeper Tyler Moses. Only 4 minutes later freshman Austin Hart scored as he ran onto a loose ball in the 6 yard box, following Patrick Baltz’s run into the box and shot that was parried by a diving keeper.

Kickapoo had opportunities in this game as twice in the next 10 minutes Baum and then Cameron Dugan were called upon to clear balls from behind Glendale keeper Jordan Pitt. A lack of bodies in the right place meant that the only goal the Chiefs would score this evening would come in stoppage time of the 1st half. Substitute Sean Marren first won a 50/50 ball in midfield before slotting a diagonal pass that sent Skyler Russell into the box between a pair of defenders. His shot from 15 yards brought the Chiefs back within 1 entering the 2nd half. Rumor has it that this is the first goal Russell has ever scored against either the Falcon’s or the Pershing Generals.

The Falcon’s extended their lead in the first 10 minutes of the second half. First Baltz once again got into the 6 yard box, this time burying a shot from Alec Martinez’s short pass. Later Dugan buried a shot that came after a scramble in the box, sealing the victory.
