Senior Grant Bowden’s header goal (video below) in the 26th minute Sunday afternoon gave Drury all it needed to pull out a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference soccer victory over Saint Joseph’s on Senior Day at Harrison Stadium in The Curry Family Sports Complex.

Bowden’s second goal of the season helped the Panthers to improve to 10-6 overall and 9-5 in the GLVC as they secured their spot in the eight-team GLVC Tournament field which opens play on Oct. 31. Drury will be the No. 5 seed and visit No. 4 Quincy next Sunday at a time to be determined. Saint Joseph’s fell to 8-7-1 and 6-7-1.

DU junior keeper Stephen Conner picked up his seventh shutout of the season and school-record 21st of his career for the Panthers. Drury outshot the visiting Pumas 14-4 on a day when the program recognized 12 seniors in post-game ceremonies for their contributions in their final home game of the season – Blake Wilson, Ben Taylor, Peter Higgins, Mason North, Danny Collins, Alex Palmer, Connor McClellan, Adam Peterson, Micah Whorton, Taylor Stacy, David Emnett and Bowden.

Four years of hard work on the pitch is coming to a conclusion for a trio of local boys. Adam Peterson (Kickapoo), Danny Collins (Glendale) and Alex Palmer (Kickapoo) are playing in their final two regular season home games this Friday and Sunday. Each of these young men excelled during high school and have become important contributors to a nationally recognized program at Drury. They share some thoughts on the highlights of the four years that have gone by quite a bit faster then they would have anticipated back in August 2007 when preseason training began.

Friday October 22nd at 7:30 pm – Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers
Sunday October 24th at 12:00 pm – St Joseph’s

The team will reach the GLVC playoffs but a pair of wins this weekend could lead to a home game on Sunday October 31st. You can help these representatives of SGFsoccer.com achieve that goal by coming out for a game and lending your support to their efforts. See you there!

Truman State Bulldogs – 0
Senior Blake Wilson, moved from central defense to the midfield this season, scored his first career goal for the Panthers today in the 10th minute to give Drury the early lead and eventual win. The goal came from a throw-in by senior Alex Palmer (Kickapoo) as Wilson slipped in front of his defender to head the ball just under the crossbar (pictured). The goal came after a the Panther’s weathered an aggressive attacking effort by the Bulldogs as they held on and eventually found their way into the offensive end.

Drury scored a second via penalty kick when Micah Whorton scored in the 38th minute after David Emnett drew the foul in the box. Junior keeper Stephen Conner (Glendale) picked up his third shutout of the season and school-record 17th of his career in the contest as the Bulldogs (2-2) outshot the Panthers by a 13-8 count.

The Panthers started seniors Danny Collins (Glendale) and Alex Palmer (Kickapoo) and Adam Peterson (Kickapoo) was the first sub and earned significant minutes as well. There were also three freshman starters, with Brendan Langford at center back, Matt Hutchinson (CBC) at left half and Alec Nagel (Jeff City) at forward, the same line up that was featured at Lewis with the injury to Ben Taylor two weeks ago. Freshmen Matt Baker, Michael Yuede and Adam Heiligenstein also saw minutes.

I think sr David Emnett deserves more minutes at forward or attacking midfielder. He’s doing the little things including providing a reliable outlet on throw-ins (critical to holding the ball in tight games like today) and his work rate and passing free up Whorton. It was not an exemplary performance by the boys today as they had difficulty keeping the ball on the ground and finding their teammates. Part of that was due to the quality of the Bulldogs play, as they’ll rue this as one that got away, but the Panther’s were their own worst enemy today. That’s the good news as well as they got the win in difficult circumstances against a quality opponent.

Here’s an interview with Captain Blake Wilson following the win at Lewis on Sep 5th

Drury is off to a 3-1 start overall after last Sunday’s 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at Illinois-Springfield on a goal by senior Peter Higgins in the game’s 48th minute.

Truman State is now 2-2, having defeated defending NCAA-II national champion Fort Lewis 2-1 last Friday in Kirksville. The Bulldogs also have defeated St. Edward’s 3-0 and lost to William Jewell 3-0. The Panthers and Bulldogs have met each of the last six seasons, with Drury holding a 3-2-1 record in that stretch with three consecutive victories, including a 4-2 decision in Kirksville last season.

Friday’s match will feature live audio play-by-play on Stretch Internet, with DU media student John Miller calling the action, as well as live stats.

The Panthers will continue the homestand on Sunday when Rockhurst visits Harrison for a noon start in GLVC play. Sunday’s match with Rockhurst will represent the first televised DU soccer match on Mediacom 22, and will be shown on a tape-delay basis throughout next week.

Drury Panthers Ranked 9th In Division II Preseason Poll

Drury Panthers, 2009 GLVC Champions

Drury Panthers, 2009 GLVC Champions

The NCAA Division II preseason poll was released Tuesday and the Drury Panther’s were included in the Top 10. The defending GLVC Champions (pictured) are coming off of their most successful season ever, finishing 21-2-0, losing 0-1 to Lewis University in the second round of the NCAA tournament following two straight shutout wins over Northern Kentucky in the GLVC Finals and NCAA 1st Round, avenging the only regular season loss that year.

The team returns a core of seven starters from last years team including the entire defensive corp, starting with senior GK Stephen Conner (Glendale). Conner had 14 shutouts in 2009, giving up only 11 goals overall and was named the GLVC Defensive Player of the Year while also earning 2nd Team All-American status.

His defensive line is a quartet of seniors, led by Ben Taylor (pictured holding the trophy), also a 2nd Team All-American and the second leading returning scorer on the team with 7 goals and 5 assists. Taylor plays outside left and handles many of the teams set pieces. The central defenders will be Blake Wilson and Conner McClellan while Grant Bowden will be the outside right back. This battle tested defensive crew will be relied on to keep the Panther’s close while the team identify’s who will step up to replace the 26 goals, including 11 game-winners, scored by Steve Wilczewski and Andrew Bordelon in 2009.

The midfield will be led by senior Peter Higgins, who will move into the play-making position vacated by Ben Nabers. Nabers was the unsung hero of last years team, with the ability to reliably hold the ball in tight situations before starting the Panther’s attack. Higgin’s is very talented, earning Honorable Mention All-American recognition last year, and one of the hardest workers on the team but is the only returning starter in the midfield. A pair of Springfield products, Danny Collins (Glendale) and Adam Peterson (Kickapoo) played in 20 or more games each last year and will work to earn starting positions this year. Collins scored 3 goals and had 3 assists from his outside position while Peterson scored 2 goals while earning minutes at both midfield and forward. One incoming freshman, Brendan Langford (San Antonio, TX) spent the summer in Springfield playing for the Demize PDL team. Langford showed good technical skills during the minutes he played and should earn playing time but likely won’t be prepared to start.

Micah Whorton returns up top following a highly successful season in 2009, scoring 15 goals and providing 15 assists and 45 points, tops on the team. Whorton earned 3rd Team All-American recognition for his efforts and will be expected to continue his fine form in his senior season. Sr Dave Emnett played in 18 games last year and will challenge for a starting position.

The recruiting class this year is 12 players strong, coming from 4 states, and includes Catholic’s Justin Bowenschulte. A few I think can make an impact this year include this trio of Scott-Gallagher players from St Louis:

Alec Nagel, 5-11 midfielder, Jefferson City High School: Alec was a First Team All-Region, First Team All-State and Central Region MVP selection who’s speed and strength could pair well with Whorton.
Matthew Hutchison, 6-0 forward, CBC High School: Matthew helped CBC and his Scott Gallagher club team both to state championships in 2009. He was named to the First Team All-Conference, All-Metro and All-State squads, and is playing club this spring with the Gallagher Academy.
Michael Yuede, 5-8 midfielder, St. Dominic High School: He was the Class 2 state player of the year after leading his team to a state championship, earning First Team All-State and Second Team All-Metro honors. Yuede also was a number of the ’09 Missouri state champion Scott Gallagher Soccer Club team.

The Panther’s open regular season play on Friday September 3rd at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio before traveling to Chicago for a Sunday September 5th game at Lewis University. Lewis reached the NCAA Final 4 after beating Drury in the 2nd round so this game will be an early season grudge match.

The first home game will be Friday September 17th against Truman State University, the other ranked Missouri team, coming in at 24th in the preseason poll.

Caleb Collier Signs With Missouri Science and Technology Miners

Miners Logo headMissouri S&T men’s soccer coach Joe Ahearn has announced that the Miners have added 10 new players to the roster from the high school ranks for the 2009 season.

The recruiting class includes three players that earned first-team all-state honors in the 2008 season — including the state’s co-offensive “Player of the Year” — and two others that were on the all-state squad. They will join a team that earned a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference last season and has been in the conference tournament in three of the last four seasons.

“We welcome this talented group of student-athletes and their families to the Missouri S&T men’s soccer program,” Ahearn said. “These young men have a tremendous amount of character and potential and will be a great addition to the future of our S&T program.”

The newcomers to the Miner program are as follows:

Caleb is a member of Springfield SC, winning a State Cup title last year as a U17. He plans to major in engineering at Missouri S&T.

Editors note: Caleb will be joining high school teammate Zack Hay on the back line for the Miner’s. Hay became a starter as a freshman early in the season in 2008 and will likely move from the outside to central defense. Caleb will be competing against his older brother Adam Peterson who plays midfield for the Drury Panthers, also members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The photo shows Collier on the left celebrating with HS teammate Ryan Moses, headed for SLU Billikens.

JERVIS ATAGANA, a 6-3, 170-pound forward-midfielder from Hickman High School in Columbia, Mo.: Atagana earned first-team all-district and all-region honors following the 2008 season at Hickman High School. SPENCER BRINKMEYER, a 6-1, 190-pound defender from Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Mo.: Brinkmeyer earned first-team all-state and all-district honors as a defender in Missouri Class 3 in 2008 after being named to the all-state second team as a junior. He played on a team that reached the state quarterfinals before falling in a 1-0 game to eventual state champion Rockhurst. He was also a first-team all-conference pick in the Suburban Big Six Conference in the Kansas City area and was selected as the league’s defensive player of the year. Brinkmeyer plans to major in civil engineering at Missouri S&T.

BEN GLOVER, a 5-8, 155-pound defender from Fort Zumwalt West High School in O’Fallon, Mo.: Glover earned second-team all-conference honors in the Gateway Athletic Conference in 2008 after helping his team finish 18-8-1. He had one assist during his senior year while guiding a defense that allowed only 23 goals in 27 games with 16 shutouts. Glover had three goals and three assists as a junior for the GAC champions and was named honorable mention all-league, an honor he also garnered as a sophomore. He plans to major in engineering at Missouri S&T.

BRIAN SEAWRIGHT, a 6-3, 175-pound center back from Chesterton High School in Chesterton, Ind.: Seawright was an all-conference performer and named as his team’s defensive most valuable player last season as he helped his team finish as the state runner-up. He was a team captain and also earned scholar-athlete honors at his school. Seawright plans to major in nuclear engineering at Missouri S&T.

Missouri State Bears vs Valparaiso Crusaders Missouri State Bears - 1 (2 OT)
Valparaiso Crusaders – 1
The Bears opened strong Friday evening, coming off of their Tournament win at New Mexico last week. Attacking with verve, they wasted no time exploiting the first opportunity to present itself. Kyle Windmueller, the man the MSU Standard calls the “go-to guy” did just that, beating his defender on the left side. His run into the box created space that midfielder Ryan Hennessey filled, receiving the square ball near the spot before slotting his shot just inside the far post in the 11th minute. The Bears kept up the attack, earning a 6-3 advantage in shots in the half.

The second half provided a mirror image of the first, with the Crusaders creating more opportunities, and beating the Bears with a goal in the 87th minute. It was scored by senior Paul Leitelt from 20 yards out as he found space of his own to hammer a shot to the far side netting. It might have been worse but the Bears were fortunate that Brandon Durk was prepared in the 75th minute, as he intercepted a crossing pass at the far post that he knocked down and goal keeper Alex Riggs quickly collected.

Two overtime periods with one near miss for the Bears as a set piece skipped just beyond Thomas Vania’s reach in the six yard box. Tonight marked the return of Springfield Demize player Isreal Bisoni (pictured, underneath MSU’s Justin Alford) who joined the Crusaders from Coffeyville CC, along with his teammate Rodolfo Lucas. Bisoni came on midway through the 1st half and played the majority of the game this evening at forward.

Q: What is the better rivalry; Yankee’s/ Redsox’s or Glendale/Kickapoo?
