NJCAA Regional Report - Ous Senghore Named Region 6 POTW

17-Sep-08

PDL: Springfield Demize host KC BrassThe Barton County men had a dominant week starting conference play with three of the weaker teams in their region. On Wednesday September 10, the Cougars rolled to an 11-0 win over Dodge City CC. It was a dominant performance from start to finish as Barton scored eight goals in the second half. Springfield Demize midfielder Oscar Narvaez managed one goal and one assist on the contest. On Saturday, Barton dominated first year program Cowley College by a count of 6-0. Demize defender Ous Senghore notched his first goal of the year as Narvaez and James Neighbour both recorded assists in the contest. Yesterday, Barton wrapped up their week with an 8-0 win over Hesston College. Narvaez added two more goals in the contest upping his season total to six. The win extends their record to 9-0 on the season, and 3-0 in region 6 play.

Tuesday, the second regular season rankings were revealed and Barton maintained their #4 national ranking, as the top five remained unchanged. St. Louis-Meramec moved up to #7 with their only loss on the season coming to the hands of Barton. Also, Ous Senghore (pictured) was named the region 6 men’s player of the week for the week of Sept. 8-15 for his strong defensive play. Ous coupled with fellow Demize defender James Neighbour and GK Donovan Dowling have yielded only two goals in nine contests. On tap this week for the Cougars is a tough non-conference opponent in Laramie County (WY) on Saturday night, one of the three participating teams in the Great Plains Districts last year (Along with Barton and Jefferson College).

Looking at the past national champions in the NJCAA, it is clear that Missouri, St. Louis in particular, have been the class of the country. When soccer was first introduced as a participating sport in the NJCAA, St. Louis-Flo Valley and St. Louis-Meramec were the class of the country winning a combined 12 national championships between 1967 and 1989, with Flo Valley taking ten, and Meramec adding two. That’s half of the possible titles in that time period. Also, in 1998 and 99 State Fair Community College out of Sedalia, Missouri won consecutive national championships. The titles were later revoked from State Fair because of eligibility issues with some of their players. Barton will be attempting to bring the first national championship to Kansas, away from the traditional Missouri power.

Editors Note: my introduction to soccer came in 1974 at Florissant Valley CC, where I was a staff photographer at the CC paper as well as working for the Suburban Journals in St Louis. Flo-Valley defeated Meramec for the title that year while SLU and SIU-Edwardsville finished #2 and #3 in the final polls in Division 1. That’s the on-field tradition we can build as a community if we are committed. This site is an effort to create the environment soccer junkies like these four can thrive in. I must be doing something right since the local rag called me for background on the story but didn’t offer any attribution. Competition is great, isn’t it :)

Parkview Vikings vs Rolla Bulldogs
Rolla’s Tyler Sinnott defended by Darren Shaw, Parkview

Parkview Vikings - 2
Rolla Bulldogs - 0
Goals in the 27th minute by Tim Griffin and in the 77th minute by Morgan Holt propelled the Parkview Vikings to their second Ozark Conference win Tuesday afternoon. UPDATE - found my game notes!

This was the kind of game I really enjoy, with a pair of well-matched teams that offer a great opportunity to see leadership exhibited. A pair of teams that I would call blue-collar, each led by a forward who garners the majority of the attention.

In this game, the Viking’s Tim Griffin led the way with a pair of plays that showed his individual skill in scoring the game winner and assisting on Morgan Holt’s late goal. The goal came as the Vikings transitioned from a Bulldog attack, with the final pass coming from Jared Moore, while Griffin collected the ball and quickly turned his defenders before slotting a ball to the near post. The assist as he broke down the left side and then into the box before calmly sending a square ball through the 6 yard box to the onrushing Holt who slid at the far post to redirect the ball into the net.

More importantly for the Vikings is their calm under pressure. Every year I am gratified to see players who are growing into their roles and responsibilities. For the Vikings, seeing the work that Darren Shaw and Matt Medley are doing running the midfield, while Dane Knapp sweeps behind them, points to the core every team needs. And that blue-collar comment? Rolla’s best opportunity was cleared off the line by midfielder Holt early in the game.

Rolla will be well-prepared for the playoffs, with a core of seniors leading the way, including Sinnott, but its Andrew Chism and Justin Schubring that will pull the strings, with junior Cody Martin also making a significant impact. Late yellow cards, including to Coach Mike Howard, point to the importance of these Conference games however. A few more opportunities under fire will help forge a young defense in front of senior Stephen Moorkamp and offer more fireworks at a future meeting between these two teams.

Glendale Falcons - 4
Camdenton Lakers - 0
Goals by Devon Newport (2), Alec Martinez and Patrick Baltz. The Falcons record is now 6-0, 2-0 in the Ozark Conference.

Carthage Tigers - 10
Webb City Cardinals - 0

Joplin Eagles - 8
Hillcrest Hornets - 0
Senior Blake Aggus got the game-winner as the Eagles get a District win.

Bolivar Liberators - 4
Marshfield Blue Jays - 2
A difficult but gratifying District and Conference win for the Liberators it sounds like. A pair of goals and an assist for sophomore Matt Magana.

Waynesville Tigers - 3
West Plains Zizzers - 0
Ben Moore, from Eric Iverson, in the 12th minute made the difference in the Ozark Conference match up

Catholic Fightin’ Irish - 6
Rogersville Wildcats - 0

Willard Tigers - 3
Ozark Tigers - 1
Senior Marian Lup got all 3 goals for the Tigers (must be the shoes Marian). Game winner came in the 22nd after Ozark had tied the game in the 18th.

Greenwood Blue Jays - 8
Thomas Jefferson - 1

Kickapoo Chiefs - 5
Lebanon Yellowjackets - 0
The Chiefs got goals from 5 players in the Conference win

Springfield Catholic vs Waynesville Tigers

Catholic Fightin’ Irish - 1
Waynesville Tigers - 0
In a game that could have gone either way, the result hinged on a few key plays. The goal was scored by junior Justin Bowenschulte in the 48th minute, as he took Adam Entrup’s square ball from the right side before side-stepping a defender and slotting his shot to the far post. Add sophomore goalkeeper Levi Millsap’s diving save of a shot in the 64th minute that seemed destined for the back of the net, and the difference in the result was found in those few seconds.

The differences between the two teams are significant. Catholic started a lone senior (Cullen Barr) along with a pair of juniors, six sophomores and a freshman central midfielder (Luke Strauss) while Waynesville has 4 seniors, 6 juniors and a lone sophomore (Gehrig Haberstock) starting. Despite these differences, both teams have to feel confident about their opportunities at the District level this year. Waynesville will battle Rolla and Camdenton for supremacy in Class 3 District 10 while Catholic is looking towards New Covenant and Greenwood in Class 1 District 6. I’ll be certain to keep you up-to-date on the progress both teams are certain to make towards there common goal. UPDATE - as Pat Taggart notes, Reid Harbach is a freshman and I missed him in my initial count that only had ten total. The Catholic flyer has Dahlberg listed as a sophomore. So 1, 2, 6, 2 is my current count :)

That’s Catholic’s midfield general, sophomore Taylor Arens, winning the head ball in front of junior Ben Moore.

Willard Tigers vs Central BulldogsWillard Tigers - 5
Central Bulldogs - 0
The Bulldogs continue to impress as they worked hard the entire 80 minutes. The Tiger’s were unable to open it up like last year’s game but they have the team speed that allowed them to get down the wings, creating opportunities in the box they were able to capitalize on. Junior Tyler Sevon was the primary recipient, scoring the first three on assists by seniors Parlie Shikany (2) and Marian Lup. Lup and Jonah Nadeau also scored, Josh Lindsey with the shutout and 11 saves against the Bulldogs. Shikany is pictured turning the corner.

New Covenant Warriors - 3
Aurora Houn Dawgs - 0

Bolivar Liberators - 4
Warrensburg Tigers - 2
Kyle “Toad” Slagle scored on a PK in the second half to give the Liberators a 2-1 lead that they never relinquished in the battle with their former district foe. The Tigers came into the game undefeated (6-0). Goals by Bradley Stillwagon (2) and Matt Magana.

Linn Wildcats - 2
Crocker Lions - 0
The Wildcats held on to the home field advantage in shutting out their District opponent Southern neighbor tonight.

Marshfield Blue Jays - 4
Branson Pirates - 2
Koda Sorenson tallied both goals for the Pirates who continue to develop as a team.

Monett Cubs - 3
Carl Junction Bulldogs - 2

Nixa Eagles - 2
Lebanon Yellowjackets - 0
Goals scored by Kaleb Romero and KhaiUyen Huynh, both assists went to Tyler Bartell. Marcus Fernandes got the shutout in goal.

Lot’s to get caught up on. First a few shout outs!

Congratulations to the Branson Pirates who won the first game in program history. Their tightly fought match against the Webb City Cardinal’s at this weekends Christian County Tournament ended 3-2 in their favor. Photos courtesy of a Carthage Tiger’s fan who was in attendance.

Speaking of tournaments, the Glendale Falcon’s won the Missouri-Kansas Challenge, going 3-0 while defeating Rural Washburn 2-1 (Kansas Class 6 4th place last season), North Kansas City High School 2-1 and Blue Valley North (Kansas Class 6 State Champs last season) in the Finals 2-0.

The Hickman Kewpies visited Rolla and took the Invitational Tourney title via goal differential, that despite the fact that Tyler Sinnott continues his early season form. Sinnott became Rolla’s all-time scoring leader over the weekend, with 91 career goals, having scored 15 in Rolla’s first 5 games this season. The old record was 87 held by Stephen Williams.

And can’t forget the Missouri State Bears who’s defense came together this weekend, tying #2 Akron 0-0 in their game on Sunday afternoon, and winning the Nike Tournament at New Mexico with a 1-0-1 record. BTW, anyone else annoyed by the video highlight I have to turn off on the MSU Bears website?

And how about them Panther’s eh. Good start to the GLVC season and Steve Wilczewski (Glendale 2006, pictured) is the Male Athlete of the Week for the Panthers. 3 goals and an assist this weekend, 5 goals for the season leads the Panthers. Southwest Baptist Bearcats won both of their MIAA matches this weekend. On Thursday they traveled to Emporia State where they won 3-1.

On Saturday, they went to Joplin where they dismantled the MSSU Lions, 6- 1. SBU’s Rhiane Mitchell, who entered the week at the very top of the NCAA’s points and goals leader board, scored three goals and recorded one assist. Nicola Cousins added SBU’s other three goals in that game. Mitchell now has 10 goals. The SBU season record is 17.

Natascha Lord
(Waynesville 2008) and Ashley Wilson (Neosho 2007) came on as substitutes in both games for the Bearcats, with Lord getting a shot on goal Saturday at MSSU.

Miners Logo headMissouri S&T Miners also opened GLVC play this weekend, hosting the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles on Friday. The games against Kentucky Weslyan Sunday

Drury Panthers LogoThe Drury Panthers women opened GLVC play this weekend with a pair of wins, rebounding well from last weeks shocking loss to Harding. Friday night Drury beat UMSL 1-0, which included Anne Prenger (Catholic 2008) who came on as a substitute for the Tritons.

Micah Little’s corner kick was deflected by UMSL keeper Hannah Sayre, but Colvin-Fritz was there to score off the rebound at 2:15 and give the defending GLVC champion Panthers all the offense they would need despite being outshot 11-6 in the contest.

Their game Sunday against Southern Indiana was a 2-0 win, on a pair of goals late in the first half by Alyssa Alcorn and Melissa Perry.

The Men also defeated UMSL, by a 2-1 score, with Steve Wilczewski (Glendale 2006) getting the ultimate game-winner in the 16th. Marco Cherisma got his first goal of the season as well. Kyler Temple (Kickapoo 2008) and Adam Peterson (Kickapoo 2007) came on as substitutes in the game.

Sunday’s game against Southern Indiana

The men did not play. Their scheduled game at Rockhurst was canceled due to the weather.

bearhead_125.jpgThe Missouri State Bears men’s team won their first game of the season at the Nike Classic at the University of New Mexico campus. The 2-1 overtime win over the Cal-Poly Mustangs on Friday was the result of freshman Jordan Barnes stealing an errant back pass and beating the goalkeeper with a shot to the far post just 1:36 into the overtime period.

Midwest Regional League U14 Boys Competition In Springfield

13-Sep-08

MRL U14 - Springfield SC vs St Louis Scott Gallagher IL Blue ( Metro United)UPDATE - Congratulations to the Springfield SC 94/95 squad who enjoyed home cooking and a pair of wins this weekend while hosting the MRL U14 games. The boys won both games by a 2-1 margin, against St Louis Scott Gallagher I 94/95 on Saturday and St Louis Scott Gallagher IL-Blue (formerly Metro United) on Sunday.

Sunday’s game against IL-Blue was a hard fought affair, with the crowd dressed for Fall due to the cool morning and 15-20 mph winds. STLSG Blue went ahead 5 minutes into the 2nd half when they drew a penalty kick that was converted. SSC came back quickly, tying the game on a hard shot from the edge of the box by Elliott Williams on a ball that had been cleared following a fine cross by Josh McCutcheon on a run down the right side. The game winner came late in the game, off of a corner kick. The initial ball was touched by the keeper (pictured) but fell in the box where Braden Mitchell was able to convert.

The boys are now 2-2 on the season with 3 games to play.

MRL U14 - St Louis Soccer United vs Eclipse SelectDecided to get out briefly today for some Midwest Regional League games since I only had a small window available to me today.

The U14 West Division White, which includes the Springfield SC 94/95 squad, is holding a series of games here this weekend.

The photo features the Eclipse Select (IL) versus St Louis Scott Gallagher I. There are also photos from the FC Milwaukee vs St Louis Scott Gallagher IL Blue squad. Click on the photo to be taken the photo website.

There are two games on Sunday. St Louis Scott Gallagher I will play FC Milwaukee at 8:00 am followed by the Springfield SC vs STLSG IL Blue squad (formerly Metro United) at 10:00 am. Unless there is lightning the games will go on, at Cooper #1 or #3.

These are important games in that these are the same clubs that regularly reach the Regionals, with Springfield SC’s older squad having competed against Eclipse, Sockers, FC Milwaukee and Gallagher/Metro United in the past. This is the next generation coming up and the quality of play is very good. Middle school age boys who would acquit themselves very well against half of the high school teams in the region.

The MIDWEST REGIONAL LEAGUE (MRL) mission is to provide the highest standard of competitive play for youth teams in US Youth Soccer Region II (the Midwest Region) and to assure the continued growth and development of elite level players.

Kansas Jayhawks Defeat Missouri State Bears

12-Sep-08

Missouri State Bears host Kansas Jayhawks
Missouri State Bears - 1
Kansas Jayhawks - 4
If you’re paying attention at home, you’re probably confused right about now. The headline points to a Bears loss, but the photo shows the home team in white celebrating a goal. What gives?

I can be a harsh critic, and it’s especially difficult to restrain myself when I feel like a lone voice in the wilderness when it comes to covering the college game in the region. Not reprinting press releases from the office of the college SID, but getting out and evaluating programs and players. I’m not an expert, although having this soap box will often give you the impression that I might be. I do pride myself on having informed discussions with the coaches about their players and the programs however. Played the game, coached the game, managed teams and leagues. But my white hair also means I understand there will be differences of opinion.

I really enjoyed tonight’s game. The Bear’s gave up 3 goals in the 1st half, the first on a mistake by goalie Jackie Jasper (the 2nd one in 4 years darn it), the next two a pair of beautiful goals you expect a Top 20 program to score. The thing is, the Bears played with heart. They came back and scored a goal late in the 1st half. They won’t accomplish anything this year unless they are getting dirty and going down in collisions regularly. Accomplished.

More importantly, they showed the ability to learn and respond. The second half was one of the more entertaining games I have enjoyed, and I want to see more.

It started from the back as Kellie Jensen and Jordan Reppell apparently determined they could get to every pass in their area of responsibility. That attitude took hold throughout the lineup and every ball was contested. The other thing I noticed is that this team is beginning to understand where their teammates are going to be. Runs were made in anticipation, off of the ball, and it opened up opportunities for Samantha Aguilar, Allie Osmundson and the other 7 midfielders to make plays. Once they did that, KU no longer was able to run at them with ease and it became a more balanced game.

Not one the Bears are necessarily going to win but when coaches talk about playing the tough games now in order to be prepared for the post-season, this is the game they are talking about. It’s something I want to see more of, and it’s something you should show your daughters and your sons.

As a final note, the Bears were apparently sorely disappointed with themselves and their play after this game was over. I measure that by the extended team conversation held post-game, and the conversations I had after wards. I’m glad they want more. So do I. In November in particular.
