2008 USYSA National Championships Begin in Little Rock

22-Jul-08

The US Youth Soccer Association National Championships, the ultimate goal of any team that competes in the Missouri State Cup, opens today in Little Rock AR with the Opening Ceremonies. Games begin Wednesday. As the the website notes:

A field of 10,000 teams has been narrowed to the Final 56 for National Finals. The top boys and girls teams in six age groups will be crowned in North Little Rock, AR. The event features the oldest youth sport trophy, James P. McGuire Cup, est. 1935

No team from Missouri, Arkanas or Iowa made it to the Finals but Kansas has a pair of teams, the U15 Girls KCFC Intensity and the U19 Boys KC Wizards Juniors. I’m sorely tempted to make an overnight visit to get a glimpse of the action although the likelihood is low I’ll actually go. If you are interested, here are the game times for the relatively local teams you can see.

U15 Girls
Wed 11:30 am - Field 10 - Lonestars 93 Red (STX) vs. KCFC Intensity (KS)
Thu 9:30 am - Field 9 - KCFC Intensity (KS) vs. So Cal Blues-Dodge (CA-S)
Fri 7:30 am - Field 10 - Slammers FC (CA-S) vs. KCFC Intensity (KS)

U17 Boys and U17 Girls play at 7:00 pm each evening in the preliminary rounds.

U19 Boys
Wed 7:30 am - Field 9 - KC Wizards Juniors (KS) vs. Freestate United (MD)
Thu 11:30 am - Field 3 - Colorado Rush Nike (CO) vs. KC Wizards Juniors (KS)
Fri 9:30 am - Field 2 - KC Wizards Juniors (KS) vs. Solar 89 (NTX)

The teams play a round robin series and the top two teams in each group face off for the Final. Saturday evening will be the Finals for the U14 Boys and Girls, starting between 6:30 - 7:15 pm. Sundays schedule starts early, 7:30 am for the U18 Boys, 7:45 am U18 Girls, and continuing in this fashion with U17B, U17G and then at 10:00 am U16G, 10:15 am U16 B 10:30 am U19 G and 10:45 am the U19 B Final.

If anyone heads down there, I’d love to have some photos and a Soccer Adventure story to share with my readers. Call me!

On a side note, it’s kind of remarkable how even the USYSA recognizes that a tournament is more fun with a large group of teams. To bad the Missouri Youth Soccer Association has lost focus of that fact. Were there even 56 teams total this year? Remember the crowds and the excitement in 2006 when Springfield hosted!

Off the soapbox now - mark your calendars for Saturday August 9th when Fox Soccer Channel will broadcast the USYSA National Championships Highlight Show

Springfield SC U23’s Host Ozarks Challenge Cup Wednesday

21-Jul-08

Springfield Soccer ClubThe Springfield SC U23’s squad had a successful weekend in Chicago, winning all three games during their travels. The defeated the Schwaben U23’s 2-0 and Schwaben/FC Twente3 8-0 in a pair of games on Saturday while knocking off the Galaxy 6-2 on Sunday.

They will host the Northwest Arkansas Lightning, from Bentonville, on Wednesday evening in the final leg of the Ozarks Challenge Cup. Game time is 7:05 pm at Cooper Soccer Complex, Field 1.

The Ozarks Challenge Cup consists of a pair of matches, home and away, in which the team with the higher aggregate score wins the Cup. In the event that the two teams’ aggregate scores are tied, the team that scored more goals in their away leg will be named winners. Springfield SC U23’s won 4-1 on Sunday July 12th opening up a significant advantage over their opponents.

The team is made up from both local outstanding college players and significant Springfield Soccer Club Alumni, including 2007 NSCAA All-America Patrick Carver from Emory University as well as Alex Palmer, Danny Collins, Adam Peterson, Taylor Stacy and Stephen Conner from Drury; Alex Riggs, Kyle Windmueller, Brian Collins, Justin Alford and Nick Dryden from MSU; Ross Chaffin (Greenwood) from Denver University; John Duncan (Joplin) from Washington University; Nate Evans (Cassville) and Jesse Clevenger (College Heights) from MSSU; Heath Melugin (Kickapoo/MSU), Zack Hay (Kickapoo/ M S&T), TJ Martin (Webb City/Rogers State) and Michael Handley (Webb City/Ashford) among others.

Come out and join us Wednesday evening and get an early look at some of the regions top representatives as the college season rapidly approaches.

Beach Soccer

20-Jul-08

The FIFA 2008 Beach Soccer tournament is underway in Marseille France. The US Team didn’t qualify this year but Mexico and El Salvador are representing CONCACAF along with Brazil, Argentina and many of the other usual suspects are out. If you want to catch some highlights, here’s the place to do it.

On a related note, have you heard St Louis has a new Sand Soccer facility? It opened recently at the Khoury Fields complex, just South of the Anheuser-Busch Soccer Complex. Organized by All American FC, it’s played on a field that’s 30 yards by 40 yards with six players. I posted about a summer tournament in Chicago earlier, which would seem to be reason enough to get a facility and league going around here. Where should we do this?

UPDATE - I see that ESPN360 is showing games live almost daily this week. 7:30 am, should go great with your Honey Nut Cheerios before work!

Tlaquepaque Soccer Exchange Journal

19-Jul-08

The 2008 Springfield Sister Cities Soccer Exchange team was on tour in Tlaquepaque, Mexico between June 26 through July 2nd. This year’s tour included games against area teams from Tepatitlan, Zapotiltic, Club Atlas and a Tlaquepaque All-Star team which was the featured Sister Cities Cup match. Upon arrival into Tlaqueqpaque, the team was quickly shuttled to the game site which has been transformed into two sport-turf fields, just minutes from our host hotel. The facility also has a Olympic size outdoor swimming pool, five tennis courts and a velodrome ; all of which are under construction in preparation for the 2012 Pan-American games which will be hosted by Guadalajara.

Our first game was against Tepatitlan on Friday, June 27th. As we were told, the Tepatitlan community is the hot bed of youth player development in all of Mexico. It most certainly showed with the impressive size and equally expressive skill, speed and soccer creativity of the 14 and 15 year olds. The game was definitely and eye opening experience for most of our Ozark-area players, many with their first exposure to foreign players and a foreign style of play.

Our second match, on Saturday, June 28th, was the featured Sister Cities Cup match versus a youth All-Star team from Tlaquepaque. We knew it was going to be a challenging game when, during pre-game ceremonies the mayor of Tlaquepaque was to ceremoniously kick the game ball to our one of our goal keepers, Andrew Guilliams on a make shift goal of cones in front of the crowd of spectators and attending delegates from both Sister Cities Associations. The mayor, instead, with a three step drop, unleashed a pill of a shot to Guilliams’ lower right side taking out one of the cones and one of Tlaquepaque players. The game itself was a back and forth tug of war with all the drama and controversy of a top flight winner take all finale. In the end, Springfield fell short of maintaining ownership of the cup and was relieved of its possession, on the losing side of a 3-2 scoreline.

Our third game was against Zapotiltic on Sunday, June 29th, which is a community about three hours outside of Guadalajara. This game, much like the one against Tepatitlan was another exposure to the many differences in youth soccer between our two communities. After the first two matches, our boys’ were beginning to get up to speed and put up a fight worthy of recognition on tremendous effort on the field.

Club Atlas coaches from the team which had visited Springfield last year, were in attendance at these games and were wanting to schedule a fourth game with a Club Atlas youth team. The game was scheduled for Monday morning and much to the delight of the players and parents who traveled with us, earned our first road victory of the weekend. That game was won 3-2 by Springfield.

Tuesday morning, we were shuttled to Club Atlas’ training facility and community in the Guadalajara city limits. An impressive 600+ acre facility includes an upscale housing development, an 18-hole championship golf course, tennis training facility (where most of Guadalajara’s championship tennis players’ train), club house and of course, the soccer training fields. We were introduced to several of Club Atlas’ bosses including the first team coach, director of coaching and team operations directors. We watched a 2nd division scrimmage, (2 straight red cards in the waning minutes were issued) and then scrimmaged another Club Atlas youth team. The first half of our scrimmage was our team versus their team. The second half of the scrimmage, we shared players on both sides of the ball.

Later that afternoon, we were scheduled to also visit the Club Chivas training facility and work out with their players and coaches. Unfortunately, the dreaded rains which were falling between 3pm and 6pm decided to come early as a thunderstorm rolled through at 2pm in the afternoon, thus causing the cancellation of our Chivas trip.

Through the trip, we were able to visit the local square several times where food and other vendors of sorts sell their wares. The square featured plenty of music, fireworks and rides and games, much to the delight of our American visitors. The kids spent their money feverishly buying up replica team jerseys and other items at every opportunity. Our tour also included cultural trips to a few historical sites and the Guadalajara mall.

Our meals, which were arranged at our sponsor hotels or other restaurants, were absolutely outstanding. We were treated to lunch at the first Chinese restaurant ever to open in Tlaquepaque. The male owner is Mexican and his wife (of 15 years) is Chinese. Great food!

The Sister Cities Sport and Cultural Exchange is definitely a worthwhile endeavor and one that any child, if opportunity presents itself, should take advantage of. It was my first trip outside the U.S. and one that I look forward to in 2010 (world cup year) … There is so much more to share about this trip, but space limitations won’t permit.

The accompanying photo was shot on the field at Jalisco (Mexico) stadium where Club Atlas and Chivas play their professional league games. It was also one of the host stadiums where games for the 1971 and 1986 world cups were played, in addition to numerous matches between the U.S. and Mexico national teams over the years. Pictured in the photo (left to right) back row: Kelly Ross, Jan Stahle, Hunter Durham, Nic Bauer, Matt Treml, Tyler Hamilton, Reece Conner, Jackson Patillo, Travis Joy, Ricky Wallenburg, Bryan Murray and David Cheek. Front row: Andrew Guilliams, Gehrig Haberstock, Derek McDiarmid, Scott Sterling, Jesse Bihlmeyer, Josh Wegenka, Izzy Chappell, Gage Mossman and Andrew Treml (not pictured, Dr. Jim Cook, Cindy Jobe, Araceli Hanks)

USA Men’s Olympic Roster Named

18-Jul-08

The roster for the US U23 squad that will play at the upcoming Olympic games has been named. Lots of familiar names including including Brian McBride, Brad Guzan and Michael Parkurst as the three older players allowed under the rules. Freddy Adu, Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley and some others. Then there’s the fellow pictured in the photo (by Micheal Goulding, Orange County Register) who I’ve seen plenty of as I’ve become a Chivas USA fan this season:

Sacha Kljestan, captain of Team USA during Olympic qualifying, is also a lock to be named Thursday to the U.S. squad for the 2008 Olympic Games, the first major international tournament in a young career that promises to be full of them. In Kljestan, many in American soccer see the playmaker Team USA has missed since Claudio Reyna’s retirement from the international game. Kljestan is one of the top passers in MLS but his real gifts are his vision and imagination, what U.S. national team coach Bob Bradley calls his “Soccer IQ.”

Check out the complete story in the Orange County Register, describing Sacha’s background and his father’s journey from Serbia, to Canada, and then into the US 28 years ago with an athletic bag and $150. Immigrants rule!

Catch The Wizards At Coester’s Tonight

17-Jul-08

KC Wizards LogoKC Wizards vs Columbus Crew is the national broadcast tonight, the game begins at 7:00 pm on ESPN. I’ll be at Coester’s enjoying the game tonight - Jack Jewsbury and team in HD on the big screen with some food and beverage specials. Almost heaven if you ask me. And it’s always more fun with a group.

The game should be interesting. From Soccer By Ives comes this assessment of the Crew’s loss to Real Salt Lake this weekend

The Crew were never really out of the game. They surged forward regularly. They had open players with looks at the goal. As is becoming their trademark this year, they charged up and down the wings with abandon. But at every turn, one small blip by the projectionist would unhinge the attack.

Contrast that to the last game between these two

On June 14 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark — a Wizards homecoming after a two-month absence — the Crew dismantled the Wizards for a 3-0 victory. Now the Wizards want redemption, and they want it soon

Jack’s back on the right defense and the team has gone 2-0-2 since that loss. A win tonight would leapfrog Kansas City ahead of Toronto FC and D.C. United and pull them within four points of the second-place Crew. Plenty to love about that motivation!
