Sporting KC unbeaten in 11 straight MLS

Aurelien Collin came up big Saturday night

Sporting KC ran its MLS unbeaten streak to 11 in dramatic fashion Saturday night. Aurelien Collin scored in the 90th minute to save a 1-1 tie on the road against the Houston Dynamo.

Sporting KC fought uphill all game after Houston’s Brad Davis scored in the 8th minute. KC dominated possession in the second half after two Houston players were ejected, but they couldn’t break away.

Sporting attempted a season-high 24 shots, but didn’t score until Collin found the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

Defense has not been an issue for KC (5-6-8), during their unbeaten streak, sporting has allowed only seven goals.

The offense should get a boost with the addition of Brazilian midfielder Jéferson, who joins the team this week as a designated player. Jéferson is an attack-first player, which should mesh well with the core that KC has in place.

Joplin Athletic Boosters Lose Source of Income

From the Joplin Globe – JHS Athletic Boosters lose sources of income in tornado

When the roof of Kaminsky Gymnasium collapsed during the tornado that struck Joplin on May 22, the Joplin High School Athletic Boosters lost tens of thousands of dollars of equipment that had been donated to the athletic department in recent years.

Because all of the athletic facilities at the high school were destroyed — baseball, softball and soccer fields and scoreboards along with tennis courts — any solution would require new sites and possibly fewer home games, McCreary said.

The boys’ soccer team will practice at Missouri Southern and play its home games at the Joplin Athletic Complex, said head coach Ed Miller. The soccer camp held last week attracted 17 players.

“I don’t know if they don’t know about it or if they’re not coming back or what,” Miller said. “I don’t know what the story is. I’m hoping to have more than 17 players.”

The team is using soccer balls and uniforms that were donated by people in the St. Louis area, he said. Another soccer camp is scheduled for the week of July 25.

Missouri State’s Katelyn Fredrickson and her JB Marine squad are playing Sparta United WSC (UT) in the Title Game on Sunday in the United States Adult Soccer Association national championships in Bowling Green, KY. The team won 2-0 over ASA Chesapeake Charge (MD) in the semifinal Friday.

The Post-Dispatch talked to Head Coach Denny Bozesky about the event

“We’ve gotten close as a U-23 team; we were national runners-up in 2008 and 2009 and lost out in pool play last year in Kansas City,” said JB Marine’s Denny Bozesky, who coaches along with John Hayes and Larry Hulcer. “It can be tough putting together a team at this level because the players have so many things going on in their lives, but we’ve put together a team that we feel can compete.”

Starters for JB Marine are goalkeeper Jamie Farrell (Incarnate Word/IUPUI), defenders Courtney Hulcer (St. Joseph’s/SLU), Claire Hulcer (St. Joe’s/Tulsa), Mackenzie Ayer (Tulsa) and Emily Viviano (SLU), midfielders Allison Hu (Duchesne/Missouri), Ashley Hayes (IWA/SLU), Casey Berrier (Parkway Central/Loyola of Chicago) and Lauren Bozesky (Ursuline/SLU/SEMO) and forwards Becky Handley (St. Joe’s/Tulsa) and Katelyn Frederickson (Nerinx Hall/Missouri State).

Devon Newport (SLU/Glendale 2009/Springfield SC) along with Jordan Hoffman of the Missouri State Bears are playing for a U23 national title on Sunday. The Scott Gallagher squad, coached by CBC/Columbia College grad Matt Mueller, face the Carolina Railhawks in the 2011 USASA National Cup Finals in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Sunday morning.

The squad defeated FC United New York 2-0 on Friday afternoon to reach the U23 final.

The Post-Dispatch talked to Coach Mueller about the tournament.

“The majority of these guys grew up playing Scott Gallagher soccer under Tommy Howe; not all of them played together all that time, but they all know how to play the game and they’re used to being successful,” Mueller said. “We know we have a good team and we’re expecting to make a run at a championship.”

Likely starters for Mueller’s squad include Mark Pais (Ladue/SLU) in goal; Chad Vandegriffe (Chaminade/SLU), Ryan Wilhelm (CBC/SIUE), Benny Jeffery (Hazelwood Central/SIUE), and Jake Dobbins (Marquette/Tulsa) in the backfield; and Nick Maglasang (SLUH/SLU), Brian Schultz (SLUH/DePaul), Jordan Hoffman (Parkway Central/Missouri State) and Devon Newport (SLU) in the midfield. Up front, Alim Sabotic (Mehlville/UMSL) had been playing alongside Kevin Stoll (Chaminade/SIUE), but Stoll is out due to a knee injury. Possible replacements include Tom Gaus (DeSmet/Tulsa) and Peter Hyde (Chaminade/UMSL).
