Southwest Baptist Bearcats Get Past Drury Panthers

20-Aug-08

SBU Bearcats host Drury Panthers With a single goal, scored from a scramble in the box after a floater was deflected off the crossbar by Jessie Sanderson, the Bearcats earned a numerical advantage on their regional rival in this afternoons exhibition game. Coach Benjamin Wade was quoted in a release in advance of the game

“We have six line changes, so hockey fans will feel right at home with the players switching in and out so much.”

and the Panthers felt it as they traveled with only 3 on the bench today.

The disadvantage to those numbers is that the Bearcats need more time learning positions and teammates in advance of their first game of the season next week at Oakland City (IN). The MIAA preseason poll puts the Bearcats in the middle of the pack, at #5, for a team that returns four starters from last year’s 9-8-3 team, which finished 8-5-1 in the MIAA. With newcomer Rhiane Mitchell (#14, England) providing pace up top, and sophomore Johanna Olsson (Sweden) in goal coming in with only 34 minutes of playing time last season, ensuring he has a solid defense in place with be Wade’s key priority. Local recruits Blair Baker (Camdenton) and Tasha Lord (Waynesville) both got minutes in the 2nd half in the attack as did Ashley Wilson (Neosho) at wing midfield.

SBU_preview2008

For the Panthers, it was an opportunity to get minutes for Meredith Hall and Katy McLain as well the starting 11 we saw Saturday. Kelsey Long appears to be in mid-season form already and the opportunities the Panthers had today all came from her ability to create space, win the 1v1 battle in midfield and send her teammates into the box. Emily West and Bailey Randol (pictured above in white, in what became a collision with Denarika Bostwick that drew loud exclamations from the SBU football team on the sideline) worked incredibly hard in front of captain Chloe Moushey to frustrate the Bearcat attack. Still early but the Panthers continue to create their own luck, going into a season that has them ranked #2 in the GLVC.

Women’s Olympic Final Features USA vs Brazil Thursday

20-Aug-08

Maybe the photo gives you a clue as to whom I’m picking to win the Gold Medal match. The only remaining question is whether or not the US will score a goal. Game time is 8:00 am and it’s being broadcast live on USA Network channel.

The player pictured is Formiga, I’ll point you to From A Left Wing and Jennifer Doyle’s commentary on Brazil’s decisive 4-1 win over the World Cup champion German squad in the semifinal Monday. Du Nord’s correspondent seems to be counting on the Cinderella factor for the US.

From US Soccer: The gold medal match is a repeat of the 2004 Athens final, in which the U.S. won, 2-1, in overtime on a header from Abby Wambach. A dramatic affair, the match is not only remembered for the gold medal victory, but also as the last world championship event for some of the U.S. veterans, including Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain and Joy Fawcett.

Update - I have to admit that I like this story and the attitude adjustment it represents.

World Cup 2010 Qualification Continues - USA at Guatemala Tonight

20-Aug-08

From the US Soccer website:

The journey to the 2010 FIFA World Cup resumes August 20th when the U.S. takes on Guatemala on Match Day 1 of Semifinal Round qualifying for South Africa. Kickoff at the Estadio Mateo Flores is set for 9 p.m. CT and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

The U.S. has never lost to Guatemala in World Cup qualifying play. With an unblemished 4-0-4 record, the USA’s victories have all come on U.S. soil. The United States is 1-4-4 all-time in Guatemala. The lone victory came Jan. 13, 1988, a 1-0 win courtesy of a goal by Jeff Agoos. (I remember that one!). If you want even more info, check out the Men’s National Team blog, including a photo of the stadium. Yanks Abroad offers their thoughts as well.

I’ll be at Coester’s this evening enjoying the game. Feel free to join me in cheering on the boys!

Happy Birthday Lance Parker

19-Aug-08

That’s Lance on the left along with veteran midfielder Jesse Marsch and Jamaican defender Shavar Thomas on the set of KTLA in LA, as part of the “Shirt Off Their Back” promotion Chivas ran earlier this season. Way to represent Lance!

There are also plenty of action shots to be found on Google but I thought this one might get me more traffic :) If you click on the photo, you’ll get a larger version.

This Week in Southwest Missouri Soccer

18-Aug-08

Olympic Soccer is coming to a close this week, with the Women’s finalist having been determined this morning (no spoiler’s here for those who have taped it or are watching online later). The Women’s Gold Medal game is Thursday morning at 8:00 am CT, with the Bronze Medal game at 5:00 am. I’m thinking I may be able to watch it at the new Library downtown on USA. Hmmm.

The Men’s Semifinal games are tomorrow. Nigeria vs Belgium at 8:00 am while Argentina vs Brazil at 5:00 am. The Bronze medal game will be played Friday at 6:00 am it looks like while the Gold Medal game will be at 10:00 pm Friday night. Sounds like a good reason to hang out in Coester’s again. Who’s interested in joining me for that one?

Continuing on the International front, the US Men renew their World Cup 2010 qualification effort with a game on Wednesday evening in Guatemala. The game is being broadcast live on ESPN2 at 9:00 pm. I will be at Coester’s, come out and join me.

There are a pair of Missouri State Women’s games this weekend to enjoy. The Bear’s open their regular season with a pair of opponents from Arkansas. Friday evening at 7:00 pm the Arkansas Razorbacks visit Plaster. Watch for #10 Kelly O’Connor, a Bentonville grad who played in the Kickapoo Shootout a couple of times. Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojanssquad is the opponent.

Just an FYI - the Men have games in Des Moines at the end of August but won’t play at home until Sep 5-6.

UPDATE - another unlisted Drury game has hit my radar. Southwest Baptist is hosting the Lady Panthers on Wednesday this week at 4:00 pm. It should be an excellent match, with the Bearcats reaching the MIAA Final last year . I’m going to have to scramble on this one…

By the way, Drury hasn’t only recruited a player in Hillary Cockrell, they also got a photographer. Her father Mitch is an accomplished soccer photographer as you can see here in his shots of the Men’s game on Saturday. He makes his photos available for free (I’m going to have to chat with him about that one)

Olympic Women’s Semifinals Monday Include USA vs Japan

17-Aug-08

From the US Soccer website

The U.S. team will play Japan in the semifinal at Beijing Workers Stadium on Monday, August 18th. The match kicks off at 8:00 am CT and will be broadcast live on MSNBC, Universal HD and the NBC Olympic Soccer Channel.

The Americans have made the semifinal round in all nine world championships FIFA has held for women’s soccer, including the last four Olympic Games. The quarterfinals saw the elimination of the host country, 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup finalists and the world’s third-ranked team Sweden, as well as the world’s fifth ranked team, Norway. Somewhat appropriately, the Olympic semifinals contain a representative from Europe, South America, CONCACAF and Asia with Brazil facing Germany in the early game.

Japan’s run in the Olympics is its best ever in a world championship and the first time it has made a semifinal of a FIFA tournament … The USA and Japan will be playing for the second time in 10 days after the USA’s 1-0 victory in Group G play on Aug. 9 in Qinhuangdao … Carli Lloyd scored the USA’s lone goal in that match on a blast from the top of the penalty box in the 27th minute … The USA outshot Japan 18-9 in that match and had nine corner kicks to Japan’s four, but the Japanese got a fantastic game from goalkeeper Miho Fukumoto and created a number dangerous scoring chances themselves

Drury Panthers Surprise Missouri State Bears

17-Aug-08

Drury Panthers host Missouri State Bears“They wanted it more than we did in the first half” was the assessment of Coach Rob Brewer of the MSU Bears following his squads 2-1 loss to their North side neighbors, the Drury Panthers Saturday evening. All three goals were scored in the decisive first half, with Drury scoring in the 31st and 42nd minutes while MSU narrowed the margin with a quick strike in the 43rd minute.

It was an entertaining game that drew a good crowd, despite Drury’s Sports Information department lack of interest in including it on the published schedule. I also missed a nice game between the men’s team and the visiting UMKC Kangaroo’s that the parent’s I talked to learned about only because their student-athlete sons mentioned it to them. Let’s pick up the pace Scott! The season has started. UPDATE - the Panther’s SID blog notes some arcane NCAA rules about reporting with brief notes that don’t address the schedule issue.

The Bears opened quickly in the match, taking the ball into the Panther’s box from the start. Drury parried that attack and slowly but surely got comfortable with the pace and physical attack of their large school opponent. While Drury was able to establish themselves and control play for the next 15 minutes, the Bears kept the pressure on and were seemingly in control of the game when the Panther’s got the game-winner from freshman Hillary Cockrell. It was the result of a corner kick, when Hillary collected a clearance and hammered a 30 yard shot just under the crossbar. Cockrell joins the Panthers from Union HS in Tulsa, two time OK Class 6 State champions in 2007 and 2008. She joins former HS teammate Emily West (pictured defending against Carolyn Sweeney) on the Panthers, starting tonight in the defensive midfield position behind Kelsy Long and Olivia Philippart de Foy. Philippart de Foy looks prepared to finally fulfill the role I predicted for her two years ago which is significant due to the loss of Sarah “Goody” Goodman for the season to an ACL injury in the Spring.

Drury Panthers host Missouri State BearsThe Panthers second goal also came as a result of a corner kick, earned against the run of play in the 42nd minute. This time Mandi Little was able to nod down the initial ball and Kelsy Long collected it inside the 6 yard box, getting off a quick shot that was parried by the defender on post. The rebound fell to Kelsy and her 2nd shot was on target, stunning the Bears. They responded well however, taking the ensuing restart down into the Panthers box where freshman Tara Bailes (Catholic - pictured with Katy McLain, Kickapoo) collected a loose ball just outside the box and put a ball into the net, off of the underside of the cross bar. Some folks even described it as a chip shot. That’s exactly the role Coaches Brewer and Dutchik had in mind for her when she was recruited and gave the Bears the momentum they needed going into the 2nd half.

The 2nd half was a freewheeling affair, with both teams in attack mode but as the game wore on the Bears began to impose themselves. The unofficial statistics had the Bears out-shooting the Panthers 14-5, with 9 shots on goal, 6 of which came in the second half. Jessie Sanderson appears to be in mid-season form as she kept a clean sheet, helped by one off sides call that negated a ball that Carolyn Sweeney put into the goal.

All-in-all, the game offered early lessons for both teams that I anticipate they will use well. The Bears continue their scoring run early, while the importance of set pieces and 90+ minutes of commitment and intensity (remember Indiana State last year ladies) were hammered home. For the Panthers, a reminder that the team that reached the Final 16 is relatively intact and capable of achieving at high levels. Fitness is going to be huge for this team, and the reason there were players on the bench last night after not achieving minimum levels. I’m looking forward to the season!
